Country fried steak with grilled cabbage and mashed potatoes
    Amy M.

Brother and I stopped by for dinner on our weekly drive down the 460. The blurb on Google maps says that this is a fast food chain for burgers and shakes, but this is NOT related to Checkers/Rallys. This is a sit down, homestyle restaurant. We walked in and were seated immediately. The decor is all paintings done by a local artist and all for sale. Very... local family restaurant aesthetic. We ordered the country fried steak served with gravy and onions, the grilled cabbage, and the mashed potatoes with gravy, as well as the hamburger steak with gravy and onions and added mushrooms, and sides of black eyed peas and fried okra. The gravy was great, the mashed potatoes were homemade, but just a bit more creamy/whipped than I generally like them and the country fried steak was very good and crispy on the outside/tender on the inside. Very good. I will say that I was a bit unprepared for the grilled cabbage. The menu just calls it "grilled cabbage". It was equal parts chopped cabbage and bacon. I eat bacon very sparingly (I get migraines), so even though it isn't my favorite, I will eat it. But if you don't eat pork, get migraines, or don't like bacon, it didn't say anywhere on the listing that the side dish was 50% bacon. Cabbage is probably my favorite vegetable, but I wouldn't order it again because of the subsequent migraine. Brother liked the hamburger steak and said that the mushrooms absolutely made the dish. The fried okra was good, but the black eyed peas could have been heated straight out of the can. That isn't to say that they weren't good, but definitely nothing special. Our server was very nice, but definitely don't come by when you are in a hurry. It took around 40 minutes to get our food after ordering, so it was a good thing we weren't starving. It was pretty darn good (and not so greasy that I had to immediately run to the bathroom afterwards, which does happen sometimes) so we will probably be back in the near future.

It's been a long time. It was really good tonight. Cole slaw is homemade and delicious. Flounder was good, no bones.

I walked in and was greeted warmly. After a few exchange of words, I advised the woman, this was my first time visiting. She welcomed me again... I was a little uneasy of what to try, since most if not all the food is fried and I prefer blackened, broiled or even steamed seafood. I ordered one of the lunch specials and the woman advised she could do light batter. Music to my ears, I didn't even have to ask, suggesting that definitely warranted five stars!! My meal was cooked to order and I waited maybe five minutes give or take another minute. I was tempted to try something on my ride home, but I figured I could wait five more minutes to sit down and enjoy the meal. Surprisingly, I was impressed. My daughter took a few bites and enjoyed the fish. She thought the hushpuppies were a bit thick, but she still came back for more. I ordered the two fish, shrimp and hushpuppies lunch deal. Now I must say I was hungry and if you're like me, your taste buds can very when you hungry, hangry or just want a small bite to eat. But I believe this meal was straight. I will go again just to make sure :) I love scallops, so that's my next entrée of choice. Parking was not an issue, but I can imagine it could get a little out of control because the parking lot is not big at all. Check them out if you are in the area. Keep and I eye out, you could easily ride by this location. Have fun and enjoy life :)

My husband was pretty satisfied with his catfish. I found my fish to be a bit too fishy and had to spit it out halfway through. My husband even said mine tasted too fishy for his liking as well and couldn't finish it. He ordered the catfish and enjoyed that. I think the serving sizes were a little disappointing for the price. Upon arrival, my husband found that they were not yet open, despite their hours stating they would be. Eventually, when they let him in around 20 min later, it seemed like the staff was not anticipating a customer walking in, and they explained that getting their food truck ready was their top priority. It was a disappointing experience, since it was Father's Day and he was really looking forward to trying this place out for his Father's Day lunch and it wasn't the best experience. He did enjoy the food and said he'd order it again for himself, but from the food truck next time because it seems maybe those customers might have better experiences. Personally, I would not return.

Ill try to give y'all a good honest opinion of the restaurant and food. I had seen the shrimp and crab philly posted on this page and thought "I've got to try that, I've never had any sandwich like that before." Well today was the day. I placed my order over the phone and the young lady who answered was very nice, (the ticket had the name Destiny on it). She answered all my questions and took my order without any issues. When I got to backstreet crabs I observed the gentleman cooking wearing gloves, a head covering, and a beard net. The young lady was helping some other customers and bagging up their order. She told me they were working on my order and I could go ahead and grab my drink (cooler with bottles and cans located in the customer seating area). When my order was ready it was boxed up and shown to me to make sure it was what I had asked for. Everything looked and smelled good. Staff was very friendly the entire time. Here's the pros of the meal: It was delicious! Piled high with filling and very flavorful. There were whole shrimp, not pieces. I think around 6 good size shrimp in the sandwich. There was so much filling I had to take a layer off the top. Fries were cooked perfectly as well. The only negative thing I have to say about the whole experience was that the sandwich was very wet, so the bread got soggy fast. Did that stop me from eating it, Nope. It was still delicious. I did end up taking the filling out of the bread once it was too soggy for my liking and just eating the filling. Just FYI if you plan to order over the phone you will need to pay with card while you are on the phone, but it wasn't a surprise, she did tell me when I asked to place a to go order. I'll definitely go back again, I've got my eye on the crab cake sandwich for next time or maybe some wings. Love to help local hometown!

And downtown Suffolk is just beautiful and quaint, it feels friendly and idyllic. *Ambience: Extremely comfortable, super approachable, but also refined with lots of wood and brick, but open and airy, and lots of light. You walk in to a cocktail and bar area, with an incredible painted sign on the brick wall behind the bar, that is a total throwback. The bar is incredibly comfortable and open and warm feeling. There are hardwood tables and beautiful booths along with a private dining area in the back. Really couldn't ask for or want for a more comfortable environment. *Service: absolutely stellar, super friendly staff, our server could not have been nicer or more genuine, or had more of an "ownership attitude" as if the restaurant meant everything to her, and so did us being there. She knew everything on the menu, had great recommendations, and insured we were consistently taken care of. She truly missed nothing. Harper, the owner, came over to check on us and ensure we were enjoying ourselves. He couldn't have been nicer or kinder or more humble. Service was outstanding. *Food & Drinks: The food! The drinks! Oh man! I've been a "Yelp Elite Member" for almost 10 years and the food here at hT is near the top of all my reviews, hundreds of them. The highest quality ingredients, impeccably curated, ingeniously but simply paired, created with a true love for the art of cooking and the true joy of the consumer. This was obvious. We started with a Mainstream Manhattan and Old Fashioned from the bar. No ordinary bartender, she's a true mixologist/professional. Both drinks were excellent, no "simple syrup" used here, raw sugar cubes melted into the finest spirits, yummm! We order brussels sprouts from the appetizer menu everywhere we go and compare them. None have ever come close to our favorite, for a dozen years, until now. These were crispy on the outside, but juicy inside, flash fried to an al dente bite and finished (almost injected) with a cherry vinegar glaze that permeated every bite with sweet, tart perfection. We also started with the vibrant Camden County May Pea & Truffle Toast which was like a celebration of spring with a fresh, grilled baguette topped with fancy Italian truffle cheese (insane!), sweet tender may peas, and fresh pea shoots, all drizzled with olive oil for a fresh, earthy, and simple bite that captured the essence of this farm-to-table cuisine. For entrees we ordered the Ben Johnson's Soft Shell Crabs with remoulade and the Brown Sugar Brined Porkchop with pimp cheese, grits, and chard tomatoes with a side of hand cut fries with roast shallot mayo. Everything was stellar, no exceptions. I can honestly say this was **the best pork chop I've ever eaten, ever.** Tender, sweet, meaty and paired perfectly with the creamy cheese grits and the tang and smoke of the charred tomatoes. Ridiculously good! See my photos, too bad they don't come with "taste-o-vision", because, wow! The hand cut, skin on, double fried potatoes and roast shallot mayo were fantastic. As if that wasn't enough food, they also brought us stone ground cornbread, with a massive slab of rough salted butter, steamy, warm, soft, buttery perfection. I'm ready to go back now! *Value & Overall: I posted pictures of all menus and all prices. Their spirits and mixed drink selections from the bar are incredible. The food, service and ambience simply couldn't have been better. Prices, as you'll see, are exactly in line for what you get and an excellent value. Portions on everything were excellent and we ended up taking home quite a bit of food, which was also stellar the next day. I absolutely cannot recommend Harper's Table highly enough. This establishment, all parts of it, truly earn a five star review across the board with no exceptions. Have no hesitation, make a reservation, go, it will become an instant favorite.

My wife and I both got the the Country Fried steak (again) because it was wonderful last two times. My grandson got the Gunslinger Burger. Our waitress, Caitlin was excellent and brought everything promptly. The presentation of the country fried steaks is a bit plain but the flavor could not be better. I did have to send my mashed potatoes and gravy back to be heated but Caitlin came back with a fresh replacement which is so hot I couldn't eat it. And this time they were as delicious as the steaks were. The green beans were also well seasoned and the biscuit that came with the dinner was superb. My my grandson's burger was clearly juicy, and so big he couldn't finish it! For dessert, I got the chocolate chess pie and my wife got the peanut pie with ice cream. The chess pie was a bit too chocolatey for me, and so my chocoholic wife and I swapped. We both loved our new choices. This is probably the best country food restaurant I've ever eaten at. We were looking for a place to eat and and since there ain't much to choose from in the area we decided to stop. Once we sat down which didn't take long we asked for a few mins to look through the menu. Our waitress just took her sweet time. When she finally came back to take our order she was just plain rude. A friend of ours didn't want her eggs runny. Instead of the waitress saying "I suggest over med or over well/hard" she just kept rolling her eyes and making faces. The place wasn't really full maybe about 10-15 people and most already had their food. So once we ordered our food it took forever to come out. During the whole meal I'd see other waitresses asking tables if they needed more coffee and what not and our waitress barely came around and never once asked if we needed refills. Now to the food part. I got some egg and ham breakfast with a side of cheesy grits. Ive never had VA ham and since I saw it on the menu I said why not? IDK how y'all eat this ham it was like eating spoonfuls of salt I was regretting adding a bit of salt to my eggs. The "cheesy" grits were not the best. I was expecting cheesy grits not just cheese over grits. I did finish it all considering we still had a ways to go to our next stop and the meal wasn't cheap. In the end we decided to get their famous peanut pie to go. Again idk how y'all eat this,it was literally the worst pie I've had in my life.
