I had Roux bookmarked to try for a long time. I had to run some errands and decided to stop in for a quick breakfast on July 6th at 8:40am. When I walked in, there were a total of 6 customers including myself in the restaurant; a couple together in line and 3 already sitting. The cashier had a chill vibe overall. I ordered Biscuits & Gravy w/soft scrambled eggs and drip black coffee. Total with tip; $28.44. I sat myself and waited probably no longer than ten minutes and a gentlemen brought my food out. Presentation was decent, but... The food wasn't hot whatsoever. For them to only have 6 guests and during what would be deemed breakfast time, it indicates they weren't busy. So I didn't understand the cold food. The gravy was lukewarm at best, the biscuits definitely tasted like day old and were so salty in certain bites. They were flaky and really good in other bites. The eggs were the same; lukewarm. It was as if the food was made and sat on the counter the ten minutes I waited. In terms of flavor, it was decent, but the inconsistencies and temperature leaves room for improvement. Not sure I'll be returning unfortunately. read more

This place is pretty universally liked, so it's an easy place to come eat with other people. There's a nice outdoor patio, and it's a big open bright open space inside. It's kinda pricey, but it is good and fresh. I like to get the classic breakfast. It is a good amount of food, it's 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, breakfast potatoes, and toast. I don't eat meat, but they substitute avocado slices for bacon or sausage. I pay $2 more to get a biscuit because their biscuits are delicious. read more

Came here for lunch and got the Cold Fried Chicken Salad. Lots of seating inside and I like how bright it was inside despite it being rainy. I didn't care for the cold fried chicken. I understood that the chicken was supposed to be cold, but my gripe was that it was dry. The salad itself was yummy though. This was our second time here & that says ALOT! we try not to repeat places, but I can most definitely say that this won't be our last! The food was amazing as an all day breakfast place too! I personally am not big on breakfast, but Roux has changed my mind. The inside is clean and well decorated, I loved the platters that they used as decor. The set up is a walk up order then they will seat you. Even if the line seems long, everything went by fairly quick! I think we were only seated for 5-10 minutes before the food came out. We tried the shrimp and grits this time around, and they were delicious. The shrimp were plum,p and the grits were cheesy and so good! We also got the beignets and omg the fluffiest I have ever had! The presentation was also so well done, they sprinkled powdered sugar on the plate, but it didn't overpower the beignets, so if you wanted more sugar, you could add it. You order from a minimal menu, but the food is phenomenal! O had the Shrimp & Grits and literally cleared the plate! The Patty Melt was another staple for this establishment. The fries were crispy and the melt was well seasoned and presented. As for service, your order when you walk in and the cashier was efficient. The individual bringing to the table was on point with deliveries and the wait for your entrees was not long. The cashier we chatted with recommended the fried green tomato tartine and avocado toast, plus all their pastries and biscuits and pie slices looked really good, so will definitely need to come by again to try some of those! No notes on the chicken-fried steak. The brisket hash was good, but some pieces of brisket were a tad dry, and I got a bit tired of eating little potato after little potato. Ambiance-wise, it's a large space with various table sizes that can accommodate groups large to small. There seemed to be a fair number of college students around and it was pretty loud inside. First Review on Yelp I was craving waffles or pancakes and needed a place that served all-day breakfast near by.. after a quick online search I found Roux! Ironically, my mom told me that the line was wrapped out the door to the restaurant earlier the same day. You order your food when you walk in, receive a number and self seat. Simple! It is a little pricey considering the self-service model, but it is what it is. It's clean inside, service is quick, and feels like your homely old diner but with that modern restaurant atmosphere. I got the shrimp and grits with a waffle on the side (you do have to ask for this directly, it's not on the menu). My mom got the fried catfish (comes with sides in the picture). Now we're not IN Louisiana, so it's not mind blowing, but it was pretty good. I do prefer my shrimp tail-off, but I didn't mind using my hands. The waffle? Put that butter and syrup on it and you tell me girl! Overall 8/10, and will be back for the beignets and chicken & waffles. This rating is based on my most recent visit. I'm rating a 4 because I have eaten here often (because it's in my neighborhood) and the food is very good. However, today I tried something new, the avocado toast. I typically love avocado toast, and even make it at home. Roux piled on too many toppings which I scraped off. And the toppings made the bread soggy. It made a huge portion, but it was enough for 2 slices of sourdough. I guess the topping was chow chow but flavor was lacking. The bitterness of the white onions overwhelmed the dill. Other than that tart flavor, it was very bland. I actually added salt. I will continue to eat at Roux, but I won't order avocado toast again. As a sidenote, my usual orders are the biscuit breakfast sandwich, the shrimp and grits (which are amazing!) and all the pastries are wonderful. read more

This is a nice place to visit in the Hyde park area . I always wanted to come here but parking was an issue. This morning the parking Gods were with me. The beignets are not comparable with anything in New Orleans, they are just ok. They have counter - service and that's good , especially for large parties. The line moves fast and the food comes out of the kitchen quickly. I went with my son but it's also a good place for a solo party. This place really took me by surprise. Everybody at the tables ordered different things and we all rated the plates a 10! I went with the avocado toast which was flavor wise was amazing. It was so fresh and the chow chow and dill pairing went excellently. I will say that it's a lot of avocado for a small piece of sourdough so the bread can get a bit soggy. The rest of the table ordered the catfish and the green tomato toast which as I mentioned before were 10/10. But the main star of the show for me was the chocolate chip sea salt cookie. It was absolutely divine, so buttery with just enough chocolate. I would definitely recommend getting it every time.
