I ordered butter naan, chicken tikka masala (about a spoonful of rice and sauce with 12 tiny pieces of chicken, an order of samosa (3 tiny ones and I ordered beef but there was no beef in it), and only 1 tiny piece of poori and it was $38. This place is insanely expensive and I will not be returning and advise anyone to go elsewhere. I might actually still be hungry after this. We were there for the Sunday lunch buffet this afternoon. After paying 27 dollars per person, one would expect either originality or flavourful classics. But we left with a bad taste in our mouth. The food felt like microwaved airline meal. The chicken biryani was flavourless, veg biryani was worse ( dried rice, frozen veggies were reused ) yogurt rice had rice which clearly was leftover from prior evening ( dehydrated?) the dosa counter was closed most of the meal ( we were there at peak time just past noon) it was late but the only thing on the plate that was fresh. Coconut fish appetizer was flaky. The only reason this is a two star review and not one star is because the dosa was fresh. To the owner - you need to taste your food before putting it out there and charging an outrageous 27 dollars per person. And cut the ala carte menu and figure out how to improve your main offering instead of adding more stuff . Also you need more staff. Very disappointed and unhappy that these guys are able to get away with what they are feeding people and calling it upscale Indian food. read more

Only rating the Sunday Lunch Buffett (NOT BRUNCH as they don't serve it until 12 PM). Dosa station is great! Several options all made to order. Mix of veg and non-veg. Multi colored puffed pieces loved by kids. Rotation changes and the two times I've gone have had different items. They serve coffee and chai (so both come with milk already) but neither are sweetened which I love because too often chai is too sweet. Also when people from the culture/region out number people from other cultures, you found a good spot. Btw, the reason I'm not doing 5 stars is that I've never eaten from their regular menu so it's unfair to rank that. read more

This is one of the regions best vegetarian south Indian food you can get !!! I wish I can say the same about non vegetarian food . I have visited this place several times since their opening day. As you enter you will be greeted and seated. Menu can be via scan in phone ! Very nice ambience and spacious they do have a party hall. Menu is easy to order and has wide range for both vegetarian and non vegetarians. We went through the menu and placed the order and took about 25 minutes to 30 minutes. Here are thier must try: Vegetable biryani or paneer biryani or chicken dum biryani , Gobi manchurian, corn pepper fry, Parotta kurma Items that didn't impress me: Veg Kothu or kili parotta, mutton sukka and kodi vepudu as both had same taste / spiced. Sambar vada was bland. But regardless of all those this place is definitely worth trying and you will come again for their taste on certain dishes you like !! read more

Was very excited to see a new South Indian place open up. Decided for our first visit to try out dependable South Indian specialties like masala dosa, uttapam, and idli. All three were fresh, hot, and tasty. (Uttapam was non-oily which I really appreciated -- always find a lot of places use way too much.) Sambhar (lentil soup accompaniment) was fantastic, reminded me of my family's--even had drumstick, an Indian vegetable you don't see often in restaurants! Also ordered a baby corn manchurian appetizer which was fantastic, really crisp and tangy. My (non-Indian) mother in law was timid and just got the chicken tikka masala, but she reported that it was the best she's had in ages. She also tried some dosa and liked it. Couple of quibbles that I hope they fix: chutneys were watery and bland, which was surprising because the sambhar was really good; they need some fabric on the walls as noise absorbers because it's mighty loud; and a couple little service snafus that come with a new opening. But all in all we look forward to our next visit, and I'll try some of the daily specials! read more

This is our new go-to Indian restaurant. Virundhu is the real deal. The highlights are the prawn manchurian and the puri masala. Homemade and incredibly delicious. The chicken tikka is good but there were only a few chunks of meat and not very filling. Every time we go, the dining room is full of Indian families of all sizes (table of 3 all the way up to a table of 11). My kids love this place. If you pay cash, there is a discount. read more

Went there this evening and ordered takeout. The restaurant was empty however they said the order would take 20 to 30 minutes because they were working on catering orders. I still ordered knowing that I was going to need to wait for my food so it was no big deal. I went to another store and came back 25 minutes later and was told we can't make your food we're too busy. We have been really finding some great restaurants lately, and this one certainly qualifies. The Dosa was beautifully done, we loved the filling, as well as the sauces. The dhal was less favored as it was a bit salty but it still went well with the dosa wrap. We'll definitely be back for the dosa! read more

I feel that I need to go back to give Virundhu another chance. I went on a Friday and there were a number of people in the dining room. After waiting for a bit after being told to seat ourselves, when the waiter came to our table, i asked for menus and he told me I had to use the QR code that was at the middle of the table. I personally don't like using QR codes for menus and I was with my dad who didn't have a phone. I asked again and was again told to use the QR code. (When we left, a table with people of age all had paper menus given to them so I know they had them). Once we figured out what we were going to order and placed our order, our food took a long time to come to the table. The vegetable samosas were delicious. They were my favorite part of the meal. The breads were ok. The style of the chicken korma was different than i had at other restaurants, which I'm sure representing a different region of India. The sauce wasnt as creamy as I was expecting and tasted unique from other places. It wasn't my favorite, but I would love to try something else. The service was extremely slow and it took awhile before the server came back out so we could flag him down. I chose not to take home any of my leftovers, which is how I know I'm not into a place, I was not interested in continuing this food journey. We spoke to Gaspar ~ he gave excellent recommendations ~ Chicken 65, Tika Masala, garlic Naan, and a dish with layers of bread and veggies wrapped in a banana leaf (OMG comfort food!) and what was like a mango smoothie creamy good and something "like" lemonade ~ I don't know the names of everything BUT I know it all tasted terrific ~ we were all full ~ and got to fairly share the leftovers too! Food was OK but the most memorable part of the experience was not one we would want to repeat. Greet and Seat - the person who greeted and seated us (and would end up waiting on us) barely said two words to us and had difficulty making eye contact. They failed to mention the QR code for the menu or that there were printed menus available. Baby remarked that they had all the personality of a wet napkin. Menus - when you have close to 100 items on your menu, trying to view the menu on your phone is no fun. We got a printed menu but the prices were out of date and there were no descriptions of each dish (only the dish's name). Frustrating when you're hoping to try something new. The Grand Finale - when we were finished, the server came over and we pointed out what we wanted to take home with us. They promptly cleared the table and proceeded to dump the rice and naan we were planning to take home into the busing tray. When we protested, the server was at a loss for words and didn't know what to do. We had to ask for our rice to be replaced and, after some hemming and hawing and consultation, they offered us new naan as well. I don't mind if someone makes a mistake but I do mind if they don't take any steps to correct it. Can't say we'll be returning. read more

I went here a few days ago. Waiter stood by our table waiting for us to order from the large menu that didn't describe any of the dishes. We ordered feeling like there was a gun to our heads. One thing was good, one thing was bad, two things were okay. It was a creepy experience to say the least. The restaurant is really shabby. Absolutely love this place for their breakfast menu. I've been here multiple times over the last year and the quality doesn't disappoint when it comes to South Indian breakfast items. I love the wide varieties of idlis and dosas available on the menu. I've tried other items on the menu (e.g. appetizers and biryanis) but personally didn't like the flavor and felt bland. Go easy on the spice here as they spice up the dishes primarily using chopped green chillies. Other thing to note is that they get extremely busy at weekend lunch time. Each time I have ordered food from this restaurant, I have hoped to see growth in the management and service delivery but, to my disappointment, the wait continues to be considerably long and inconvenient. The food is fantastic and authentic but there are serious issues with the length of time required to receive online orders. My American friend from Philly and I, visited Virundhu on Friday! This could be my third or fourth visit to this restaurant in the last two years or so. The server said that we should try buffet. We checked out the items that were displayed, presented and ready to eat, including unlimited dosa's of different choices. They looked good and attractive! The food was OK and I would NOT say it was great or awesome! The cost is $22 dollars for the buffet! I have to decided not to visit this restaurant again because the server uses the same gloves to clean the tables, accept cash, then brings food if you order something from the menu. There is no concept of cleanliness or hygiene or restaurant procedures for food safety. Knowing some restaurant owners, it is the restaurant and its owners fault because they do not provide any food safety procedures or training. The service definitely is slow and they do not give you any heads-up that the food will be ready in 25 minutes or whatsoever. Areas to be improved or negatives: 1 - The floor near the sink and bathroom is very sticky 2 - People take the used plates to buffet, and noticed some eat (taste food) right there at the buffet place. They do not maintain cleanliness and server does not even say anything. Sign missing and again there is no formal training to these employees. 3 - Customer need to take their own used plates and put them in the collection place. There was no sign of such. The server mentioned it twice, even though I HEARD IT the first time and DID NOT DEMAND ANY KIND OF SERVICE FROM HIM. 4 - This is not the first time, but restaurant pushes the customer to pay in cash and they offer 10% discount if paid in cash. This is illegal because it is a sign that they want to avoid paying taxes, including collecting sales tax. read more

Had the opportunity to slip in before the rush this afternoon and enjoyed the friendly service and hot masala dosa. Love the coffee and if you haven't tried it I highly recommend it. Their biryanis are fantastic. For the foodies, if you are there on the weekend try the South Indian biryani. It's served with bone in chicken and medium spice level. This is the baseline and how it should be eaten. If you need something for the heat try the lassi. Their breads are fresh and delicious. The only thing I had a minor issue with was the palak paneer. The food was very good. The menu typical of south India cuisine. The service was prompt. I made the mistake of asking if we had a choice of spice levels, at which the waiter said, "No, but it is moderate. I'm sure you will be able to tolerate it." I assured him that the reason I asked was because I often find waiters 'milding out' my meal because of my fair complexion. I like my Indian food spicy. It was spicy, and I did tolerate it just fine. Every metal plate was lined with banana leaves, which was a nice touch. The menu is very extensive, as an experienced restauranteur I expect they will find it necessary to trim that over time. One of the meals was served on the metal plate that was used to broil it. Very elegant. The ambience is modern elegant with crystal sconces on the walls. We were the only European heritage appearing customers, which is a good sign. The menu has pretty good descriptions, but could be more detailed. The prices were very fair. For hot beverages they only serve coffee, no chai, during the week. I would go back every week to try a new menu item. read more

I've been there several times since they opened in September. Best selection of South Indian and Kerala specialties. We've tried their parotas, appams, idiappams, with various curries and accompanying dishes such as fish pollichathu, varuthuracha chicken curry, mutton curry. We also tried the goat kizzhi parotta. All have been excellent and very nicely spiced. It is also a great place to take my American friends as they have been willing to adjust the spicyness of most dishes.
