I took a class on Adobe Photoshop last spring. The new facility is beautiful and is in a great location. Maybe the service was a little wierd because it's so new. If I remember correctly, the Photoshop class consisted of three sessions. The instructor didn't present a clear agenda/goals, the class materials didn't relate to the session, the computer room wasn't prepped (again, the facility was new but Photoshop wasn't even loaded on all the computers), and there was an evening where there were more students than machines. The audience wasn't clearly targeted because there was a mix of amateur/professional photographers and some students were totaly incompetent at basic computer skills. At the end of the second class, we all found out we were using a professional version of Photoshop. Everything I was practicing was totally useless. The instructor didn't know how to tell us what features would transfer to Elements. I didn't even bother attending the final class. There aren't many classes to select from, so I don't see me returning. read more

My fiance and I purchased a Groupon for the Cocktails and Canvas taking place on March 8th at 7 pm. We were excited about trying out a place close to home that had such great reviews. However, you can neither control nor predict everything in life. I had an emergency come up that evening and we were unable to make it to the class. I attempted to mark the coupon as unused because of this but the VisArts website had already marked it as used. When I submitted it for review, not requesting a refund but rather hoping to reschedule the class, I was told absolutely no transfers would be made less than 24 hours before the class. I find this policy to be extremely unforgiving and incredibly unreasonable. Now I've forfeited my money due to something that was completely out of my control. Will not be buying any classes here ever again. Buyers beware. read more

After my friend found a Groupon deal for one Cocktails and Canvas class, we couldn't wait to sign up and try this place out! We signed up for our class (which took place last night) three weeks in advance, and there were still plenty of available spots at that time. As time went on, though, the class filled up to capacity probably a week prior - something to keep in mind when reserving your spot. I really like that the calendar goes about 5 months out so you can plan! Plus each event shows a picture of what you will paint, difficulty level, price, instructor, etc. Our class was 5/10 difficulty level - I think it was easier than that. I'm not sure how they assign those ratings, because some classes that seemed hard to me were rated less and vice versa. I parked in Garage A - the best option in my opinion - and was there for 4 hours. After VisArts validation, I paid only $3. The entrance is off of Rt 355. I got to the class about 15 minutes in advance, and there was probably 25% of the class there already. They had all taken the "front" spots where the instructor would paint her own canvas along with us. It was too bad that I couldn't see the instructor from my seat! I also wasn't overjoyed with the table setup - it was cramped. I felt like I had to take great care with every stroke and paint mixing/reaching; I also stood for most of the class while painting. Overall, the class was a great experience. It opened up my eyes to painting, something I haven't done in years. Now, I'm tempted to buy my own supplies and paint in the comfort of my own home! I even forgot about the wine at times - I was so happily engrossed by the task at hand! The canvas was pre-sketched, but you are free to paint whatever and however you'd like. I kept with the sketch, and it worked out pretty well. I wish there was more initial direction though - I didn't know how to mix paints to get the colors I wanted (should I start with white or the darker color? equal parts or what ratio?), so a quick cheat sheet to the side would have been appreciated. While our instructor was knowledgeable and helpful, you can't really learn techniques on the fly with this course either - like brush strokes, blending, etc. After going in blind this first time, I feel more comfortable taking another class. Three hours to complete that size of an art piece is not as long as you may think - I've taken art classes, and I was always in the studio after hours. Luckily, VisArts offers "Finishing Touches" classes for free - additional time for you to finish your piece. Just RSVP online! Bottom line: this is such a cool activity! Whether you're alone or with friends, it's a great feeling to say you created something all on your own. The price is right, the building itself is awesome, and the options are fun! read more

I have done the Cocktails and Canvases and Mud and Merlot classes, and both times I am convinced that all the other students are either Pratt alums or own an art gallery. All is well, because I can drink wine and be satisfied with my 8th grade artistic skills. I will review Mud and Merlot, because I see enough reviews about the canvas one. There was no signage for this activity, so that threw things off. The instructor didn't even introduce herself until about 20 minutes into instructing, but that's okay; she was very good at instructing. I learned fancy art words like sprigs, score, and Exacto knives. We had about half an hour to learn these techniques and plan our masterpieces. Then we painted. We were told that our artwork could be picked up in two weeks; no notice, just come back in two weeks. I think the class was well-organized instruction wise; the instructor and her assistant were helpful, especially polishing up some pieces I would have otherwise flubbed. She provided laminated instructions. But the class was disorganized preparation wise (no sign for the class, no introduction, no follow up for your creation). That is so minute of a detail, though, so I had a very good time and will definitely keep my day job. read more

[Review on yoga and comedy shows.] YOGA on Tuesday evenings is wonderful, and the atmosphere at VisArts is peaceful. i especially like when we use the room with the big glass windows that overlook the Town Square with the twinkling lights in the trees and the view of the ice skating rink down below in winter. Instructors Cindy and Janet are very knowledgable and aim for a challenging yet relaxing workout. I leave feeling great and can't wait for Saturday morning classes to start. I have already noticed a difference in my flexibility after only two months. $10 is affordable - I hope it stays at this price. Most yoga classes in Bethesda/Rockville cost $18-20, which I wouldn't be able to afford 2x a week. Thank you, VisArts, for offering yoga to the community. The COMEDY shows I've seen here have been top quality. Laughed 'till I cried--in a good way. The recent show included three comics, two from NYC and a local. The Emcee, Raheim, also did material. The production company has a one-year contract to put on shows here once a month. Do yourself favor and go to these shows. Now we don't have to go all the way to DC if we want to laugh and if the show ends at 10 pm, we don't have to get home at 11:30 pm due to slow Metro service. Plus, it's a good price at $15 and no two drink minimum. They had a pretty good beer and wine list and snacks--bags of chips--but hey I'm not there for the food. I'm there to laugh. Mission accomplished. One criticism that's not about the comedy shows itself. The audience was 50+ yrs old and didn't get the references the comedians made in their jokes. They didn't laugh and were cranky. I'm not ageist by any means, but I think it's important for you, reader, to understand that if you hear someone speak ill of the show, know that comedy is subjective and you should go for yourself to form your own opinion. read more

This is a great arts center. I have always been a fan of the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria so when I learned about this venue, I was excited. It's closer to me! VisArts is located in Rockville Town Center and is probably around 5 levels or so... not sure exactly. But it's a small space that has different levels for different events and things. This venue can be rented out to independent artists on a monthly basis, rented our for events & weddings, as well as offers different art classes. Very similar to Torpedo Factory. I have been to VisArts for a number of events: Rooftop LGBT Event - This was a reoccurring monthly summertime event in 2013. A LGBT production company rented out just the rooftop and provided a DJ and bar service. The bar service was decent but we ended up having an issue with charges in where they charged us $200 more than what we actually paid. That issue was eventually resolved. The sound was fairly decent for being outdoors on and the rooftop. I thought it was a great party but I'm pretty sure they relocated venues because of the sound within the neighborhood. It is also a residential area, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were complaints. Non-Profit Fundraising Event - This event has the fundraising event on the top level. The main space was open and well lit from the natural light coming in from the large windows. Outside of the main event space was artist studio's and smaller general spaces that were used for cocktails and such. The space was perfect for this event. I believe this is also the same event space that is used for many weddings. I have not yet taken a class here but am looking to doing so in the future. This is a great art center and in a great location. Nice to have something like this in Rockville! read more

My only experience with VisArts has been with Cocktails and Canvases. I had a blast! Here's the format: you get some instruction on the basic layout in the beginning and then you're left to your own devices. It is neat to watch your fellow artists put their own spin on their artwork. Then throughout the lesson, I called upon the artist in charge for help in completing some elements of the painting. She was helpful and I was happy with my product. The class itself was very mellow and quiet and the artist in charge played some music on her ipod for us. Groupons come up every so often so I bought another one. It's pretty reasonable for what you get. The classes themselves cost more, but I do not have experience there so I can't comment. I guess the only critique is that the style of the class isn't for everyone. Someone who needs more instruction or who is shy about asking for help probably wouldn't enjoy this class. I did though! I took a cocktails and painting class with Kate W. and she was a wonderful teacher! They even offer a free finishing touches class, but I think 3 hours was more than enough time to complete it. They offer a Painting Under the Stars class on their rooftop which I'm sure is nice anytime before September when it is quite cold up there at night. They had a nice selection of snacks and unlike other painting & wine classes in DC, they offer unlimited wine. However the canvas was much smaller at 11x14 than the one I had at the Living Social building art class. VisArts is a 10 minute walk from the Rockville metro and there's lots of restaurants in the Rockville Town Center. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Spend your money somewhere else! 3 friends and I signed up to do our first Cocktails and Canvases event yesterday afternoon at 2pm. It was pouring rain outside when we arrive to their main location, only to be redirected to their pop-up location "across the square." It was extremely inconsiderate of the VisArts company not to let everyone know before that this event was going to be at another location!!! When we arrived at the pop-up, we seated ourselves and had no interaction with anyone who worked there for at least 10 minutes. Then we were told to sign in and get canvases by a man who lacked any form of customer service. THE WORST PART OF THIS was after we were sitting there for 15 minutes, they let us know that there is NO INSTRUCTOR, and that they found someone to come but they would be 45 minutes away. They encouraged us to get started painting without instruction. Finally at 3pm, an instructor shows up (after going to the original location and getting redirected like we did) and starts rushing through teaching us how to paint our picture. She was nice to come around and check up on us, and offered to stay later. This unfortunately was also on Super Bowl Sunday, so many people weren't interested in hanging around. Lastly, their parking validation did not work!!! We had to pay for parking at the normal price. For all of this hassle, they did not even try to compensate us in any way! You still had to pay for your second glass of wine! This company is completely unprofessional and needs to ensure better logistics for future events. I have taken three different classes here: the mud and merlot, the cocktails and canvas, and then a mosaic class. Mud and merlot: I took this in the Summer of 2012 and it was awesome. The two young guys who instructed the class were really enthusiastic and great teachers. They gave me pointers when I needed help and seemed so into it. One guy even drew something for me to copy onto my tile. I guess it helps that they have experience teaching summer camps for kids! We ended up needing a little extra time and they were so cool about staying late. Cocktails and canvas: Terrible! Seriously the worst class. I painted the poppy fields in Holland picture at Christmas 2012. The "instructor" acted like she didn't want to be there - texting on her phone or out in the hallway talking to a guy all night. There was no instruction or help given at all, just a grainy print out of the picture to copy. The canvas was tiny compared to other studios and the fact that it was slightly pre-sketched was unhelpful since with acrylics you have to cover the whole canvas with your background colors anyway. I asked the instructor for advice on how to paint realistic clouds and she had no clue. I have heard that they have since made some improvements to the painting classes (larger canvases). It would be better if they had a real artist or art student teaching the class and maybe painting along with you, like they do at other studios. Mosaic: I attended the Day of the Dead masks class in November 2013. I believe the instructor was Emily and she was great. She did a demo for the whole class, then she came around and did individual demos for everyone. She was very patient and gave good pointers. My only complaint about this class was that it was only 2 hours which was nowhere near enough time. The nice thing is that they offer 3 hour, free "finishing touches" sessions a couple of times a month so I went back in December and finished up. The finishing touches instructor (Kate, I think) was also really helpful. She got me interested in taking pottery classes. Grouting at home is super easy thanks to the in-class demo and instruction sheet. Final thoughts: The website isn't great, there's a lot of information, and I have noticed a few times that dates and times for classes are inconsistent or inaccurate which then requires a phone call to confirm. Also if you create an account and sign up for something (like finishing touches), you can't cancel online. The studio is beautiful and the location is great if you want to make a night of it. I came here with my friend for a Fused Glass Plate class. We used one of the Living Social deals for it, otherwise it would be way to expensive. The class was all female, so it was pretty fun (no offense guys). My friend and I didn't realize that we were supposed to actually cut up the glass into pieces we wanted, but after awhile we got the hang of it. Be careful with small shards, though. I got a few cuts or so on my fingers, but there's a sink and band-aids available if you need it. Some snacks and drinks were provided, but it got a little difficult trying to eat and drink and the same time as scoring or cutting the glass. And then there's the paranoia of getting some of the shards into your cup. I really liked this class a lot and I want to take it again (for a discount, of course). read more

I attended a class on a Sunday evening ( normally closed during this hour) for a Canvas & Cocktails event... loved every minute of it.... very basic and user friendly -- walk in.. sit down.. grab a drink and snack if you like... and paint your heart out for 3 hours in peace.... to be surrounded by like-minded individuals and really let your inner artist speak out felt great... -- needless to say, I will be back for future classes..... The building is huge with various classrooms designated to different types of art... clay -- glass - paint -- etc... My wife and I took a gingerbread house making class at VisArts. We had a blast. When we showed up, they had everything ready to just sit down and start decorating the house. Staff was nice and very helpful. Everything was easy going and fun. The wine and painting class next door also looked like they were having fun too. I highly recommend their classes. I attended a wedding this past weekend and the reception was held here at VisArts. The party room was on the second level and it was very cute and personal! It had an overlooking of the outdoor ice skating rink with its Christmas decorations everywhere! The venue had a modern and pristine feel to it. When I walked in, they had a few rooms with paintings and sculptures so I believe they hold art classes during the week depending on the schedule. The building is located near Bar Louie and La Tasca. Rockville Town Center has a few garages and Garage C (lower level garage of Dawson's Market) is the closest one to this place. You may receive free two hours parking when validated. They already had vouchers for us at the front upon exiting so just in case you attend a class here and they don't validate, just walk to a near store or restaurant and they will do it for you. I read a few Yelp reviews about this place about classes that can be bought through Groupon. My artsy self would love to try a class sometime! read more

When I moved to the area, I wanted to find some activity to get me out and doing something fun. I found the Ceramics class which ended up being super fun! Even though I had barely taken a throwing class before, the instructor Janet was super helpful, giving more attention to the students who wanted it while letting the more experienced potters throw without being held back. The facility is great! Janet was super friendly, my fellow potters were super friendly, and the location is great. My only complaint would be that I would like more of a variety in color of the different glazes, it tended to be mostly blue, red, or brown, but the colors they did have were mostly beautiful. Don't paint with Kate On February 5th, my friend and I attended the Paint with Kate: Misty Bridge class. I was excited to take this class as I'm a big fan of Leonid Afremov's work and happen to have an original hanging in my living room. We were running late and arrived to class twenty minutes in. We didn't think it would be a big problem considering the three hour time frame of the class and the three other students in the class were not too far ahead of us. Be aware that the website and details for the class is not correct in that it states that each student is provided a canvas that is "pre-sketched" and would receive "individualized attention". We were given an empty canvas and a small print out of the picture to copy. There was no individualized attention or instruction at all! Kate kept telling us to "Just go with it". Misty Bridge is a very detailed and intricate piece that you can't "just go with". If the expectation of the class was for us to figure the picture out on our own, we could have saved ourselves the $55, and printed the picture off the internet as opposed to sitting there for over two and half hours lost after a long day of work. We were consistently asking questions hoping to at least have some direction, but the instructor was the absolute farthest from helpful. read more

When we arrived two weeks later we were told that there was an issue with the baking of the clay and they'd reach out when the mud was ready, but that shouldn't take more than a week. After 2-3 weeks of waiting I finally reached back out and they said that the vases were ready. They did offer to ship us our vases to make up for the poor communication, but I find a reactionary approach to be less sincere in this circumstance. Got a groupon for the Mud and Merlot class and had a blast! Our instructor Ryan (yes you got the oh-so-good review) was amazing! My sister and I were able to get a cup of wine and snack (small bags of chips) to enjoy while making our (we had three options to make: cup, mug or vase, & plate) ~ cup & mug. Although I do wish there were more options/selections to choose from with the prints we got to make designs on our cups/mugs. The instructions were very clear and easy to make and the instructor was very helpful and made it entertaining. The class was about two hours ... I wish we had more time actually to be more detailed/creative with it. I took too long and painted my second item in a rush. I'd definitely recommend VisArts! I want to try other things here :) Great class! 7/29/17 I originally gave it 5 stars, but now after two weekends, I updated it to three stars. I was told our items will be ready to be picked up two weekends later, but I was also told to call to make sure our items were ready to be picked up. I remember in class, I had asked what time they close on Saturday cause I know I am available to pick it up on Saturday and he said just give them a call. So it is now two weekends from when I took the class, I called in the morning (seeing that they open at 9AM) no answer, so I left a message. No one called me back yet ... I stopped by since it as on the way back home and I talked to a woman who is a student and she said there are no staff working on Saturdays and that they would be the ones that know whats going on.... confused because Ryan told me to call to check and to pick it up on Saturday... no one was around to give me answer. So I strolled in the hallway a bit trying to figure out if I can spot my items. I cannot find it. I'm disappointed that the instructor should have let me know to call during the weekday instead of the weekend. 8/8/17 I left messages regarding if I could pick up my items and no one called me back. I've taken their stained glass and mosaic classes, and produced some nice pieces that I still display in my condo. The instructors have always been helpful and encouraging. There is plenty of time to finish your project, and if not, you can register for a free "finishing touches" class. The facilities are spacious and clean. I am less enthusiastic about the painting classes. They give you cheap, watery acrylic paints that are almost transparent. Even if you're an experienced painter like me, it's hard to get a good result. I felt like a surgeon trying to perform a triple bypass using his toes. read more

While I appreciate the classes VisArts offers the community. I don't appreciate how they conduct their classes. I attended 'mud and merlot' with my Mom. We are not new to pottery/ceramics. Teacher showed up at the time the class was to start and set up then. Of course we had to wait for late arrivals (happens no matter which class one takes and I understand it is to be expected, not instructors fault that attendees can't show up on time). After 30 minutes of prep and a 5 minute explanation of what we were to do. My Mom and I had a fine time constructing our vases. We were told my instructor we could glaze it or leave plain and it would be 'bisque' which is what my Mom wanted. She did not desire a glaze as I did. Two weeks later we picked up our pieces as instructed (they don't call you to tell you it's ready, you just need to remember to come and get it). My piece was lovely and just what I wanted. My Mom's piece was glazed! This glaze was gobbed on so thick it appeared cracked. She had some words that she wanted to be visible and the glaze completely covered all of it! Why did they feel the need to change her art piece? We of course went to the admin office and they stated that this was the first piece ever not glazed on purpose they had seen. The admin folks then blamed it on the instructor for not leaving notes. The instructor told us at least twice to glaze only if you wanted too. They did give us a choice to repeat the class, and I could attend with my Mom for free, or money back. We took the money back. What was so hard about calling/texting/emailing BEFORE glaze was applied to see if there was an error that my Mom wanted fix. If glaze had to be applied, then why not have my Mom come back and glaze it herself. Not just slopped on as if a first grader did it. Her art piece was ruined! The admin had very little remorse about it. We are still awaiting the refund check... There are other centers offering art classes that I find respect the artist, their work and their time a bit more than VisArts does. There was NO need to glaze this piece without consulting first or they should have left it alone as my Mom wanted it. Shame on you VisArts! read more

I have had one experience with this place and it was poor. They offered a "Winter Arts and Ice Skating Camp" for kids during the winter break from school. They chose not to take the kids ice skating and offered no partial refund to parents. It was overpriced and disappointing. read more

I really enjoy taking classes here. It's a great way to let out your creative inner self, if only during one wine-fueled night, and paint to your heart's content. The next day you are so amazed at what you have accomplished and are proud for all to see. I am tempted to take some of the longer classes that really go into the technique of painting, but for now I have only participated in the cocktails and canvas classes. Disgusted with the management. Took my son & husband for a $40/person pottery class as a Christmas present to my son )$120 total), and they THREW OUT our pieces without so much as a phone call, email, and certainly no compunction. They argued that "it was in the fine print" of the class description that they would throw out the finished pieces after 12 weeks--but pottery takes 2 weeks for them to finish--so 14 weeks should have been when pieces would have been discarded. We went at 14 weeks to the day, and they had already thrown out our pieces--nevermind that their storage boxes were nearly empty, so it certainly wasn't a lack of space, but rather a gross and utter lack of respect for art and lack of regard for their customers who keep them in business. I've been a loyal customer for the past 5 years and have referred so much business to them, which I deeply regret. How can anyone be so callous to cavalierly throw out $120 worth of a family's Christmas gifts without so much as a simple phone call or email? They don't hesitate to use customer email addresses for spamming purposes, but can't be bothered to use it to show common decency? Absolutely disgusting. Lesson learned, and never again. read more

I have attend a couple of the Canvas & Cocktails events and loved them. I am now signed up to take a 3 class course in drawing with charcoal, as well as another canvas painting class. Staff are great for the most part...the only issue I've had is that my validated parking didn't work...I park elsewhere now. Very unimpressed. I walked in with out an appointment to do a sip and paint class. After paying $60 for the experience they informed us there was no instructor. They told us we may wait an hour and they instructor may or may it show up. Not to mention the fact that the quality of their products is extremely poor. I do not recommend visiting and if I could give less than one star I would. read more

I took a mosiac mirror class here after purchasing a Groupon. The skill level was appropriate for adults and kids. There was an instructor available, but not much instruction was needed. The final piece turned out nice, but given the low level of instruction, I wouldn't come again unless I had another coupon. A major inconvenience was that the piece had to be grouted by the instructor and when I went to pick up my piece 2 weeks later, it wasn't ready yet. One of the instructors there quickly grouted it for me while I waited, but due to the inconvenient office hours I ended up being late for work. The hassle of picking up a finished project would make me hesitant to take another class here. read more
