I am writing this review to warn other customers, especially those using Medicaid or other vision insurance plans, to ask very specific questions before agreeing to any exam or service. My son had an appointment for a routine eye exam and glasses. Before the appointment, Visionworks was aware of his insurance coverage and what benefits were included. After the visit, we discovered that a contact lens exam had also been performed and billed, resulting in additional out-of-pocket costs. My son's understanding was that he was there for a standard eye exam and glasses. He does not wear contacts and was not seeking contact lenses. Visionworks may claim that the service was discussed or authorized, but at minimum the communication was unclear enough that he left believing he was receiving only the exam he came in for. The frustrating part is that the contact lens exam fee is non-refundable. Had it been made absolutely clear that an additional service with an additional charge was being added, we would have declined it immediately. My advice to anyone going here: do not assume the exam being performed is only the one you scheduled. Specifically ask whether a contact lens exam is being added and whether it will create any additional charges. Get a clear answer before the exam begins. Whether this is an intentional business practice or simply poor communication, the result is the same: customers can leave an appointment facing charges for services they did not realize they were receiving. 1 hour before my appointment I received a text stating that the appointment was moved up to 10 minutes earlier than the original appointment. When I called to let them know we were running a little late. They said that it was "too late" and the doctor needed to take their break. They also informed me that my entire appointment was taken "off of the books" days ago because I didn't "confirm" with earlier texts. If I was taken off the"off the books" why would I get that text message an hour before my original appointment telling me it was moved up 10 minutes?! The one star is kind considering there was no service at all to rate and the phone conversations were unprofessional, defensive and frankly rude. The good news is...the doctor did get their break and THAT is apparently what matters most. read more

Dr. Ma is amazing. She is thoughtful and will give you a good evaluation. She also speaks to patients with respect and integrity. The general manager however (along with other staff members) didn't offer honest or healthy engagement. The girl who was to assist me in getting glasses did not know what she was doing. She couldn't offer a real price on a 90.00 pair of glasses with what I would need. She said they would be like 800.00. She wouldn't tell me her name and talked defensively and in circles. It was wild and weird. I called to get information on my rx. The general manager (name starts with a "C") refused to provide it because I wasn't purchasing glasses from them. In fairness, there is at least one guy who does well with people. I found the rest of the "team" unprofessional, unpleasant, and completely disengaged from the process. The hours posted on the door state that the store is open on Sundays 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. I called customer service, no answer. No sign posted to explain the unexpected closing. It seems like every time I come here that they are understaffed or there is something wrong with the system. The previous visit I had here, The system was down and they insisted on having me wait 1 hour for it to come back up meanwhile she is over sharing and telling me about her personal life (she's one of the managers!). This time I had an appointment scheduled for 12:20 pm however I showed up at 11:55 because I know how they can be. It is currently 12:55 and I still haven't seen a doctor and I am still sitting in the waiting room. Honestly i feel like the only reason this place is still standing is because people NEED to get their eyes check. I don't recommend this location. While waiting you are comforted by the manager saying how people are a waste of her time after she completes her phone calls. This place is horrible. I have been going to the Columbia MD Visionworks for years and have always had WONDERFUL service. I slacked for a couple of years and was wondering how the staff and doctors will be at this appointment. The front staff is excellent. My contact was Rozetta and she was so caring and a great personality and I had to give her a hug. My doctor was Dr. Ma Choe. I was so happy to see that Dr Choe was still working there that I became teary eyed. She has always been very informative explaining my situation and caring. And she takes the time to answer my questions. To me, this is a great eye place with a great staff. read more

My 3 kids and I have been patients here since 2020/2021 so we've seen the staff change. First off, I want to gatekeep Dr Ma for all she's worth. LOL it's ALWAYS a pleasure visiting her. She's EXTREMELY kind and patient with my bajillion questions. I've only seen Dr Ma so I cannot speak about the other doctors. Prior to the staff changing, I only liked 2 staff members. Scheduling with them and getting pick up notifications weren't smooth. Some orders just weren't submitted. But I've previously worked in the medical offices (cardiologist and ophthalmologist offices in NY) to know how busy, demanding and overwhelming it could be. So I try to book in advance and be more patient & understanding ESP during pandemic months. When it came to problems, I would see that sometimes it was the previous staffs errors, and sometimes it were rude patients causing issues. Again, all of this is in regards to the PREVIOUS STAFF. But one day, I noticed the 2 staff members I liked both stopped coming in. I don't like change but I was crossing my fingers for a new efficient staff. So from the new staff members, I primarily received help from Charmayen, Shantera (I can't remember if I spelled it right) & Mya. LET ME TELL YOU THAT I WANT TO HOG THESE 3 STAFF MEMBERS ALL TO MYSELF! I love them. Absolute pleasure working with them. My insurance isn't so friendly with their software. But Charmayen waves her magic wand and gets me in and out super quick. She never brushes me over because it's more work. She takes the time to make sure I'm getting all the vision benefits and making sure I'm saving tons of money. Honestly they're such good people that whether it took hours or not, I wouldn't mind. Very caring, polite, funny, efficient ladies. I never had issues with them. They took the time to educate my kids as they started wearing contacts this summer. They were so patient while my kids were struggling to put the contacts in. I have ZERO complaints about the new staff. I do not call the visionworks general number nor book online. Whenever I'm at the store or in the area, I'll schedule with them in person WAY~ in advance bc I know how the medical facilities work. Again, I only had issues with the old staff. The new staff members are dolls. A lot of the customers now are really impatient and demand far more than needed. Idk if the new staff have issues with customers but to those visiting this location, please be patient and be kind to the front desk and workers. read more

I ordered glasses, picked them up and they were blurry, returned the glasses whilst I met someone who thought her covert condescending attitude was subtle. I can put up with a lot but the attitude from her in combination to the over priced service was too much. Also, I scheduled an appointment prior to the visit and they had all my paperwork ready printed and called my insurance prior to my appointment. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. read more

This was my first time here and while the experience wasn't necessarily bad, it leaves room for some suggestions. There was a mix up on my behalf with my insurance policy and so it took a few extra minutes for my daughter and I to get checked in. The gentleman at the front desk was very helpful though and called to verify for me, but maybe having that be part of the scheduling experience would alleviate the issue instead of sending me 10 emails confirming an appointment that I already confirmed several times. Next, I booked my appointment and my daughters back to back. After I went through the testing process they came and got me while I was helping my daughter go through the testing process because she didn't necessarily understand the instructions. They told me the person was ready to see me, but I declined not wanting to leave my 7 year old daughter with strangers. Next time I will definitely book times farther apart, but I thought it was very odd they would ask me to do that being that she was with a male tech. The staff was very nice, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. After that the process was easy, the drs work remote and the waiting period in between drs wasn't very long. Unfortunately, I was 10 minutes late which is the grace period. Here in this shopping center it's heavy with traffic and it gets hard at times to find parking. They did not give me my appointment and was told to reschedule. I'm pregnant and under stress and they turn me away for being 10 minutes late something that was clearly out of my control and not because I was in-responsible. I've been coming here since I was 13 (now 27) and never again will I step foot here or any other Visionworks. I do my best to never post negative reviews, but I think I have a moral duty to warn others to STAY AWAY from this store. I purchased glasses last year there. When the frames soon after suffered a metal defect failure in a screw while I was sitting at my desk, I had an argumentative manager tell me I lied and broke the glasses and there is no such thing as a mechanical defect, and bicker with me - her "accomodation" was to let me buy the same frames new for $115 instead of $120... while their website was selling them for $80. Their corporate office was understanding and offered to replace the frames for free. My replacement pair suffered the same mechanical failure shortly after I got them, and corporate again understandingly offered a new pair of a model of my choice. However, when I went to the store to get that replacement done, the store staff was new, had no idea about the arrangement with corporate, and suggested I was lying about the whole thing- that I broke my glasses again and lied to them, and that I lied about talking to their corporate office. They refused to call corporate even when I told them who I had spoken to, and kept bickering about charging me full price. The associates were being vocally condescending to other customers, and trash talking customers who weren't there on the phone. I gave them every chance, and they treated me like dirt every time. Please do not go here, it is a waste of your time, and a waste of money on glasses that are marked up by 300%+ with zero customer support at the store level. Be warned. read more

I'm trying to speak to someone at the store, but I'm always on hold for more than 30 minutes before I have to hang up because I just don't have time to be holding forever. I made an appointment online for a family member, but it would be very frustrating if they got to the store only to end up leaving because you don't accept their insurance anymore. Just no. Been here for glasses twice. I've had to come back 4-5 times because of manufacturing errors on their part. Been a glasses wearer for over 20 years and have had high prescriptions. I ordered glasses at this store the first time the pupil diameter was off from manufacturing. My eye doctor had checked it. The second time I don't know what they messed up but they wouldn't check it. When you go to pickup glasses no one helps you with fit and verify that the glasses are correct. Hell no one even helps you with picking out well fitting frames or gives you advice. When you have high prescriptions there's a number of things you need to be aware of when choosing a pair. Of course, if you go back with a problem there's no attempt to troubleshoot. They'll just tell you to return to your doctor and check the prescription. Well, when you've been a glasses user for decades and an unchanging presctiption, why the hell would it be the prescription? They don't check prescription or the PD with me wearing it. They don't verify with their own equipment your prescription unless you ask. The end result is both years I've bought glasses from here I've had to make multiple return trips to get glasses remade. The second time has been right both times. I've been using Visionworks for a number of years in multiple states, I know Visionworks owns the insurance and the manufacturering. For cost saving measures they've reduced types of lens available to only a couple. It has been okay for my high prescription so I've stuck with them to avoid variability due to lens materials. But when they own the manufacturing and I've had issues with their quality control, and no one at the store believes you. You just come to hate a place. Absolutely hate them. A waste of time because they will not help. They wouldn't even call the different stores to verify prescriptions that I've purchased from. Absolutely disgusted with them. read more

I really wanted to Love this place. I've given them 4 chances... I love the idea of calling and getting an appointment the same day. That was the only good thing about this place. After you see the Doctor who was wonderful and accurate... everything else from there goes downhill. They make up pricing. Nothing is set in stone. I guess you pay according to how you look... idk. The tech gave me one price... I said it was too much and she came back with a better deal But she wasn't happy about it. So, They had my insurance information on file from a previous visit. But I paid cash for my visit and they still build my insurance company who pay them as well ( route 40 location) Hence is why I came to the Columbia location... I really wanted to like this place... The medical you receive is just fine, but everything else is hideous. They never answer the phone. I've been on hold for over 45 min one time, two other times was on hold an then hung-up on. I've checked in and sat in the waiting room and been forgotten about. I've tried several times to get records transferred - with no luck. LAST MONTH: Ordered contacts, was told they were on backorder and that I could pick up trials. Waited about a week and a half before picking up the trials. Called to confirm availability and to check status of my contact order. Was informed that my contacts were there!!! (Hmmm, so I guess if I hadn't called, no one would've called me. Benefit of Doubt- maybe they had just come in) I arrived at the store to pick up my contacts. The associate searched low and high for about 10 minutes and then finally produced, TRIALS. I was then informed that I couldn't leave until I could put them in ("Man, get off of my back"), I declined the invite and informed the associate that I was "not new to this". A LITTLE OVER A WEEK LATER: Called the office again to check the status of my contact order. I was informed, yet AGAIN, that my order was in. Off to Columbia, AGAIN to attempt pick up. I arrive at the location. As soon as I entered, I was greeted and told to have a seat. After about 35+ minutes of waiting, someone asked what I needed. I informed them that I was "picking up..." The Associate began feverishly searching for my order. About 7 minutes later, she came back and said, "did someone call you to inform you that your GLASSES were ready" . At this point I'm thinking.." I never said I was picking up glasses. In fact, I was never asked". I politely informed her that I was there to pick up contacts. The associate returned to her search and 5 minutes later, she returned with my contact order. Finally, I was out the door. PRESENT DAY: Called the location on 9/27. Was immediately placed on hold. About 4 minutes later, someone returned to the phone to determine my need. After explaining that I only wanted to have my Rx emailed to me , I was abruptly informed that the office had a "new system" and that I would need to pick up my Rx from the office... Called the office again on 9/29 to see if the Rx could be faxed. I was certain that this wasn't an unreasonable request due to an optical provider's ability to fax other providers. My call was answered, qualified (need determined), then placed on hold...... After about 25 minute of holding, I began to wonder if the call had been forgotten. At this point, I wanted to hang up but, was curious just how long they would actually keep on holding.TEN MINUTES LATER (35 minutes of holding) I decided to call from a different phone. The call was immediately answered. I explained to the associate that I had been hold and was simply trying to have my Rx faxed... Again, the call was placed on HOLD! I terminated the call. I returned to my original call and after about 5 minutes the Associate returned to the call. I explained that I had been on the call waiting for nearly FIFTY MINUTES.... I was informed that she was unaware that I had been holding because, and the gag is, THEY HAVE A "NEW SYSTEM"... I AGAIN asked if she could FAX my Rx. I was informed that because of this "NEW SYSTEM", I would need to come to the office.... I asked the Associate if that was something she could have stated before placing the call on hold. She reverted back to the "i didn't know you were on hold" defense, which was the LAST thing I wanted to hear. TODAY (9/30) I went into the office, just as I was instructed. After being placed on hold, at two different times, for a total of SIXTY MINUTES. I asked the associate, for a copy of my Rx and for a box of trials for my right eye. Not sure how, but my contact supply is uneven. I was told to wait, as she needed to assist two other people who came after me. (I completely understood. If it's something quick, get them out the door and on their way!) I waited patiently at the counter. The Associate looked up my info and shortly after, informed me that my Rx expired in March. She then asked if I wanted to schedule an appointment. APPOINTMENT!!! (meant to be read using your best Soulja Boy voice). I declined, then returned to my truck feeling defeated. I began to think,"unless they are in the business of filling expired prescriptions, my Rx couldn't be expired (I literally ordered contacts, "about a month agoooooo"). I considered returning to the office to raise this very question but decided that it wasn't worth it. TAKE AWAY... -sure the office might be busy, but appropriately qualifying your customers needs will save them time and you the stress of feeling overwhelmed. Your system of placing every call on hold and telling every customer, in your office, to wait is the reason you're backed up. Also, your office always appears to be understaffed. -If my Rx is truly expired, I should've been told this the first time I called. Had I been given appropriate information, I wouldn't have continued to engage. I probably wouldn't even be writing this review. -After being on hold for 50 minutes and still not getting what I needed, the absolute last thing I wanted to hear was about your "new system", which appears to be flawed and outdated. read more

It has been over 2 months and still have not received my glasses, ended up just asking for a refund since they could not tell me when they would be arriving and they kept telling me "oh it'll be in next week" and my glasses still did not show up. She was not paying attention to me instead she kept trying to assist another person behind me. She could not process my insurance correctly. I have had trouble finding a reliable optometrist and someone who can get my prescription right and the doctor here got my numbers right and helped me tremendously. I placed an order on the 9th. It is 20 days later and no one bothered to keep us informed as to the status of our order. Earlier this week I spoke with an associate who assured me that I would receive a call when they came in, mind you, that was just 4 days ago. That call has yet to come. I have been on the customer service side of the industry. It is just good practice to have follow up with your paid customers. WORST customer service I have ever experienced. And that's saying a lot because I have had some bad ones. I lost my prescription in my move and didn't keep the boxes to my contact lenses. I decided to go through 1-800contacts to renew my prescription since it must be done ever year. In order to do so, they need to know your current prescription. I called the location to obtain the information and I was met with ZERO help. They can only fax the information to a "doctor." They can't give it to the patient. They can't upload it to my visionworks account. They can't send it in the mail. They don't know how to send it to 1-800contacts. The only option they offered was to send to a local doctor. Since I don't have one, I asked if I could obtain it from a local Visionworks where I live now. They told me yes... but then said they couldn't look up that information for me and they also couldn't hold for 30 seconds while I checked myself. I would need to call back and wait on hold again--which I had already been on hold for 15 minutes before they even got to me that time. Absolutely ridiculous. Zero customer service experience. Zero solutions. Basically, "not my problem, do it yourself," attitude. I will NEVER ever use visionworks again. This location is horrible. I've been going to Vision Works for 13 years and this location is the reason i'm deciding to explore other options. I went in to get some new glasses. I was told it would take around 2 weeks for my glasses to be ready. I received no call or email when they were ready. I decided to show up and my prescription was completely wrong. I told the woman that I couldn't see out of my glasses AT ALL and she told me to go sleep on it and try again tomorrow. Girl what? No way you're serious. So I call and come back later and another employee checks my prescription and says the glasses are way off. He tells me to come back in a week... Still no phone call regarding my glasses being ready. I got no apology, no compensation. The customer service here is TERRIBLE. Go somewhere else, I know I will be. read more

Note: this review pertains only to the front staff and not the doctors. Oh how I wish I could give this place a zero or negative rating. If you think going to the MVA is tough, this place makes the MVA trip look like a breeze. The level of incompetence of the front staff is staggering. Even if you take an appointment, it will take at least 2 hours to get a prescription. They will try to suck money out of you by charging ridiculous fees that they can't even explain. If I could give the entire company less than one star, I would. On December 16, 2022, I dropped off two paid of unique glasses, and I still have not gotten my glasses or a refund. I have been getting the runaround ever since. They have lost the glasses and do not want to admit they have no idea where they are, yet they have not refunded my money. I have left message after message, and when someone does call me back, the response is, "I will call you right back," and I never hear back from them. This includes the corporate and regional offices. These glasses cannot be replaced, which is why I purchased them. DO NOT IGNORE THE BAD REVIEWS ON GOOGLE OR YELP, THEY ARE TRUE. I have been going to eye doctors for over 20 years. I know the procedure, have always had good experiences. I recently switched to this doctor as it was closer to my home. I'll start off by saying that the doctor herself, is very good and very nice. However, no doctor is good without a good staff and this is the problem. The customer service, front desk staff, and technicians are unprofessional, rude, condescending, untrained and needs to be changed. There is a reason why they have multiple complaints against them, and they have done nothing to improve their behavior towards customers. Checking in itself is a hassle because first they claim you didn't make an appointment, which I did. And I filled out the online forms as instructed. Yet when I get there, they tell me they never got it and I never filled it out. I had to show them my copy on my end that they did for them to even to listen to me. Second, the way they handle insurance is disorganized and they gaslight their customers. They charge me for items that my insurance has written in the policy that it covers, yet they charge me anyway claiming that my insurance does not and tell me that they have never heard of my insurance provider.I had to pull up my insurance policy, and finally they go into their desk and go "oh your insurance policy is here I guess it does exist". And did I mention that the front desk staff looks like they are drunk or half asleep? The DMV customer service is better than this, and that's a pretty low standard. If they do this job multiple times a week, by now at the very least they should know how to do their basic job of checking in customers. And that's just the first part. Second, they lose orders. If you order glasses, or contacts, you might as well never see them because they won't call or tell you that they are ready to pick up. And they NEVER pick up their phone in the first place. And if you are lucky that you got an email saying it's ready for pick up, you go there, and the front desk lady will tell you they lost it and couldn't find it. I told another worker to check again, and he actually looked and found my glasses and said they were just sitting in the back. That is so disorganized. This place is also unsanitary. Even before COVID, previous eye doctors I have been to have wiped and cleaned the machines they use before you go into the main exam room (the machines where you place your chin and get the eye puffs). However, here they do NOT clean the machine after each patient uses it. It was fairly crowded when I went, and after a person had used the machines, the incompetent lazy, careless woman took me in and she did not clean the machines. She should be fired. It's COVID and this is extremely unsanitary given people literally press their chin/face into these machines. And lastly, don't trust that your pre- prescription has been done accurately. The front desk lazy, half asleep looking staff is the one doing it. And if you don't believe me, read the many reviews across google and Yelp where multiple complains have been made about errors in prescriptions. To the business owner: you need to stop making excuses for the unprofessional staff you have. There is a reason there are bad reviews. It takes a lot of time and frustration to get to this point of writing a bad review. Once again, the main doctor is great and is the only reason I come here. But she is nothing without a good front desk staff. read more

I normally don't write negative reviews but this place is the worst! I originally came here because the cost of an eye exam was low, but I had to wait about an hour for them to see me after I was checked by the eye doctor. When I went back to order my contacts the person working there told me they had no record and I needed to bring the prescription I received from them, which she assumed I didn't have, because she stated I never came in for a follow up, which I did. I had to drive home to get the prescription which they should have had in their file in the first place, and no one apologized about the situation. I ordered my contacts and it took over two weeks to get a vision works representative to speak to me about my order. No one was responsive about my follow up calls regarding my contacts. This past week I ended up asking them for a refund, and the manager tried to tell me I shouldn't do that because if I went somewhere else it would take even longer to get them. What terrible customer service. I ordered my contacts online and had the shipping expedited to one day, and still got my contacts for the same price that vision works originally charged me. Just awful. Went in for an eye exam, they pulled my insurance, and then waited until AFTER I received this service to tell me that my insurance wouldn't be accepted. They made me pay full price out of pocket for the exam. I spoke to VSP customer service afterwards to figure out why this was happening and they let me know that the rep most likely knew what they were doing or just didn't care. read more

HORRIBLE customer service. after being on hold for 10 minutes it took the representative another 15 minutes to find my information and place my order. She couldn't answer any questions I had. called the corporate customer service number. Not only could they not help answer my questions either (they are not in any way connected to the brick and mortar stores, go figure), but I was told it would not matter if I managed to get an online account set up because their system was SO OUT OF DATE that they could not accept my insurance except in store or over the phone. This is the worst store. I've been here three times now and it just gets worse and worse. Piss poor customer service and extremely long wait times. It takes forever for someone to acknowledge you.... even when you're standing right in front of them at the front desk. A simple "hello, one moment" would be nice instead of pretending I'm not there! After waiting 30 mins to just receive a pair of trial contacts that I had already ordered, I walked out. With no contacts. And no one batted an eye. I'll take my prescription elsewhere. read more
