An absolute breath of fresh air! I attended the Femme Von Follies show with friends, and it was amazing to enjoy the talents of others in such a safe environment. Visual Arts Collective is a mixed use gallery hidden in an unsuspecting location in the heart of Garden City. VaC provide a venue for the display of a variety of visual arts--from an art gallery for exhibitions by local artists to a performing arts center. The location is tucked away about a block from Chinden in close proximity to the Ranch Club. And, while, they're located in Garden City (a city that still allows smoking indoors--really Garden City? C'mon!), they are a nonsmoking establishment. I came here for the first time during the holidays for Alley Repertory Theatre's presentation of The Golden Girls Christmas Extravaganza (fabulous!). The space for performing arts is intimate. Seating consists of rows of chairs on the floor. The stage is elevated and so, providing you don't have someone overly tall in front of you, the view is fine. Seating is general admission, so the earlier you get there, the better your seat. And...they have a full bar (whose bartenders just happen to mix a mean Manhattan), so why not get there a little early? Overall, good things are happening at the Visual Arts Collective. Personally, The Golden Girls Christmas Extravaganza is now on my list of holiday musts and I'll definitely be keeping a eye on the Visual Arts Collective website for the next opportunity to enjoy an evening of local art. Wow!! What a place. I went to go see their talent showcase and was totally blown away by the acts. It's amazing that the City of Boise not only has these extremely gifted and talented performers but also such a cool/eclectic venue for them to show off their passions. The Visual Arts Collective is wonderful in so many ways! It serves as an art gallery, performing arts oasis, bar, and a rentable venue. I have personally performed there and the owner, Sam, provides a dressing room which includes seating, places to hang costumes, mirrors and counter space, and a TV so you can watch the stage from behind the scenes. Sam displays artwork from local Treasure Valley artists and has a wide range of shows there often. This includes dance shows, plays, bands, and even Drag Queen shows! The venue is clean and the drinks are reasonably priced. Sam and all the staff provide an awesome place to experience Boise. read more

I came to the Vac for the Green Zoo album release show and was pleasantly surprised. The sound quality was great and the drinks were inexpensive. Additionally, there is wonderful, awe-inspiring art along the walls throughout the space. Even the bathrooms are adorned with humorous and beautiful art that make you think, make you laugh, or both. I have now seen two awesome shows here (A Red Light Variety Show and a play from Alley Repertory Theater), both for very reasonable prices and in such an awesome space too! This is one of my favorite places in Boise, I LOVE that we have a joint like this. It is essentially an event center with walls lined with unique and often sexy local art. My favorite shows to attend here are the Red Light Variety Burlesque shows (I've been to 5-6), but I've also been to a 2 person play (Sex with Strangers) and Story Story Late Night here. Full bar, drinks aren't overly expensive, staff is friendly (if always busy slinging those drinks!). If you get invited to something here, give it a shot! And take in the graffiti in the restrooms..."Dyslexic cow goes Oom" lol. read more

The VAC gets 5 stars for the amazing statue of Buddha in a gas mask that's on the right when you first walk in.

My favorite venue to see a concert at. Local beer and wine is all they serve and there is always great art on the wall for purchase. Staff is always nice. The sound is great and so is the size of the stage and the room. A local food truck is out side along the fence of the patio for those that are hungry. The only down fall is it is only 21+ and not all ages. But I am okay with that because I am over 21 lol. read more

The absolute worst sound system in the business. Saw two concerts this week and both were intolerable due to overuse of bass and volume. Shook twins concert was a bust due to drowning out of all vocals and their amazing instruments due to bass and reverberation. Don't know if it the building or sound system Gave it two ties this week. Won't be back. The musicians need to be aware that their talents were not audible. Will go to a better venue next time. A waste of almost 100 dollars on what should have been a great music experience. It wasn't the musicians it was the sound. read more

Absolutely my favorite place to have drinks and listen to local music, as well as traveling bands. The bar is great, but it doesn't feel like a bar scene. There is no blatant pick up activity, no posturing. And the sound is the best you will find for live music in Boise. But what makes this place truly great is the way they support local musicians and bands. I've watched a lot of bands mature at the VAC, and I've watched a lot of young bands get their start there opening for touring acts. In fact if I think of my favorite local acts, from The Very Most to Hillfolk Noir, Sleepy Seeds and A Seasonal Disguise, even a Dirt Fishermen revival, the shows I remember with the greatest fondness have all been at the VAC. Everyone involved in the VAC is genuine and real. There is no pretense, and assholes stand out so uncomfortably they usually leave for downtown. Sam is great at the bar, and Bob is great at the door, and the art on the walls is cool too. If you want to hear genuine Boise music - I mean musicians pursuing their own sound who have matured locally - the VAC is the place to be. read more

The staff is friendly and the drinks are delicious. They showcase local artists, with an ever-changing repertoire of art. Beautiful stage and relaxing, authentic atmosphere. I went to Eilen Jewell concert. There was seating for only about half the attendees so everyone else stood and got in the way of the people seated at the back. The set up was conducive to those who weren't there to listen but to shout at each other to be heard above the music. It was much like the Knitting Factory where it was hard to listen to the music. I would not go again unless they change the concert setup. read more
