I also don't recommend buying stuff from the frozen section...I get the feeling they don't keep their eyes on this section that much. I've only been here once based on other Yelper's reviews. I was only after a few products, but came out with a little bit more! The staff are friendly and if they don't know how to answer/find something you're after, they will point you to someone who will. I love vitamin city. They carry organic food, produce, supplements and vitamins. If it's not safe and good for your body, they wouldn't sell it. Their staff were very attentive and they even showed me around the store. They listened to my needs and gave me advice on living a healthier life. Funny thing is my nose started to bleed and the guys helped me out. Lol They gave me a clean bag with ice in it, advised me to tilt my head back. A minute later, my nose bleed went away. I used to think this place was great when they first opened. Sure, prices are good, but they stop carrying items because vendors raise their prices. Vitamin City's solution is to stop carrying the item. Ummm... that's not helping your customers folks! Especially, if your customers like shopping at your store and go to your store for certain products. Not cool. Your suggestion is to special order it. No thanks. The number one reason this place gets 4 stars is that ALL of their produce is organic. Yes, all of it. I double checked this with their produce manager. He said that Wednesdays and Saturdays are the days they re-stock their fresh produce. They also carry some really cool products I haven't seen anywhere else, like a refrigerated soy whipped cream in a box that you whip yourself - no annoying wasteful container that always breaks! And, they carry Daiya cheese, which is the only store-bought vegan cheese worth eating. Their staples and dry goods are very reasonably priced and they have an awesome variety. The downside - clutter! Do they not have a storage room here? There are aisles of boxes and piles of stock. Also, I know that their name is Vitamin City, but there are toooo many vitamins and supplements. I prefer to get my nutrition from whole foods, whenever possible. I'll overlook the flaws of this place to get my organic fruits and veggies, cheap staples, and hard to find vegan-friendly stuff. More variety than Fresh & Easy, better parking than Trader Joe's, cheaper than Whole Foods, probably a little more rough around the edges than all three. read more

Went to this place for the first time today and loved it. Lots of fresh produce and grass-fed meat options--hard to find and usually a lot more expensive. I wish I found this place a long time ago but I'm happy I know about it now. I've been shopping at Vitamin City for groceries every week for probably a year. I do so because they have some items that I need/want that are most often lower priced than Whole Foods or that WF doesn't have at all (like Pamela's Whenever Bars & flax milk.) I buy almost exclusively organic products, by the way, & I believe ALL of VC's produce is organic. It's true that their systems are aniquated as far as they have the old registers where they punch in the price instead of actually scanning the item. I'm sure that's why they sometimes have no idea they are out of a product & why they have expired items on the shelves (both which I've experienced.) So check your exp dates & let them know if they need to order something. Yes, that's kind of a pain, but again, I do it for lower prices & to get a few items there I can't get elsewhere. The good thing about the "expired" (it's really just a sell-by date) items though... if you still want it, they'll give you the expired item for free! :-) And yes, most of the time you do have to squeeze through the aisles because there are so many boxes (yet they still run out of stuff! Go figure.) Also, if you're like me & like to try something & if you don't like it, return it, don't think you're going to do that at this store. They do post their no-return policy (unless it's defective or expired.) Try the item at Whole Foods, if they have it, & keep the receipt because they'll take it back if you don't like it. Both the reviews that say the employees are friendly & helpful & the ones that say the employees are unfriendly are true. lol Some of the them are friendly & some are not so much, & sometimes it depends what mood they're in. ;-) It is honestly not a professional atmosphere. The Asian woman appears to be over all the other employees. I don't know if she's the owner or more like a GM. She is unprofessional herself & doesn't seem to treat the employees necessarily that well. So it's no wonder that this store has a moody, unprofessional culture overall. The first few times I went to the store, I took my time getting know all the products they offered in the categories I shop for. Ever since then I've got my list & I breeze in & out in 5-10 minutes, so the negative aspects don't really faze me. I have going to this store for over seven years. I purchase some herbs on 02/20/21. One of the herbs I picked up was the wrong one ( brought over $75.00 worth). I went back to exchange it and the guy told me that there is no exchange. It was only a week (I catch the bus).Then he proceeds to show me A sign that is under a "DIRTY PLASTIC COVERING". How was I suppose to see that. And then he points to a sign that is surrounded by other papers, like I am suppose to zoom in on that. Your receipt even states that I have 30 days from purchase to exchange or store credit. This is not good business. And the people that were working in there was so rude. I rather pay $.50 cent more at Lazy Acres. I now have a product that I cannot use. SAME ON YOU AN DTHE PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE. NO MORE AND I SUGGEST OTHER PEOPLE NOT TO VISIT YOUR PLACE. My husband has been purchasing all his weight lifting supplements from Vitamin City for years. We cannot find anywhere else that can compete with their prices and selection. We never knew they had a produce/grocery department but were pleasantly surprised when we stumbled across it this past Saturday. They had just received a delivery so everything was incredibly fresh and the low prices were shocking. Compared to other large chains organic prices the savings are huge! I have been thinking of going strict vegetarian or better yet a Vegan and this store would make it very possible with their large selection of Vegan products. read more

Vitamin City is an independent vitamin and health food store, including beauty and personal care, and health remedy products. They are well stocked--in fact their somewhat small store is pretty much packed. Prices are below average, although not as cheap as Costco. (Note I have not made an exact comparison--what grade vitamin, exact milligrams, etc.) If you want ultra cheap and aren't fussy about what type/brand, Costco might suit you better; if you want something specific, less mainstream or high quality, go to Vitamin City. The staff is helpful, and the owners really know their stuff. They have degrees in biochemistry (I believe) and can explain the science behind the different vitamins and health products. Some products they do run out of, and it's sometimes hard to get, you have to hit them at the right time. I've tried asking them to order, but when I ordered I wasn't notified when the product came in, even though they said they would. read more

Been here quite a bit and loved it for the uniqueness and selection of goods. As of lately the last few trips here there was a stocking issue that surfaced. Apparently stick is kept in the back until associates feel like putting stuff out. Why? Might not be the case however my last so many visits. It's I intended on purchasing were either expired, near expiration, past expiration, or just not replenished. Yeah when this happened to completely different item types of food. You got a problem with product circulation. So back to Whittier with the new revamped and relocated herbies. Where items I buy have a stated shelf life of a year or at least I know they are properly rotating items. Another unbook mark for my yelp. Well the best memory I have of this location is seeing a Long Beach transit bus run over a full sealed bottle of mustard. There are still mustard stains at the bus stop where it happened. Don't believe me check out the bus stop near the corner BOA all over the curb. Lol! Yeah something about running over stuff makes me laugh hysterically. read more

This store is jam-packed with lots of goodness. I wanted to make a natural bugspray for my 2-year-old, and a lady stopped stocking shelves to help make something that would keep bugs away without stinking. She didn't rush me, and was veg helpful. I called another day to see if they carried Red Boat Fish Sauce (whole30 anyone?). They didn't but he offered to get it in for me. Much cheaper than me ordering it from Australia! (Or even Amazon.) Employees are super friendly. The store is pretty overflowing but anyone will be happy to help you find anything. I'm going to check for sugar-free bacon when I go pick up my fish sauce. i give it 5 stars for being organic, affordable and in my hood. i would like to dock a star for aesthetics but the aforementioned benefits bump those stars right back up to 5. yep, its a mini whole foods but not as pretty, organized or ridiculously expensive. i was so happy to find some of my favorite brands like TWIST and PRESERVE, a beautiful variety of organic produce and nice people to boot! its everything i had hoped for and MORE! thanks to yelp, i've finally found my alternative to what i can't get organically at Trader Joe's. This is the most frustrating store I have ever found. Their all-organic produce section is the biggest lure for me. There is NO other store that has ALL organic. How great is that! However, in three years, every time I am there, at LEAST 50% of the produce is old, yellowed, slimy-spoiled and disgusting. I have to look through bags and bags of kale, for instance, to find if there is any fresh. Most of the time, the percentage of spoiled produce is closer to 80%. What difference does it make if the veggies and fruits are organic if they're old and not fit to purchase. I wouldn't even give them to a pet rabbit. I have talked to them about this to no avail. They simply seem not to care. The manager/owner certainly doesn't. I'm always told to come on the two days a week when the fresh produce is delivered. I won't even go into a recitation of how many times this has happened or even what happened or I'll get to upset to even finish writing this. I have also found items on the shelf past their expiration date. Again, the workers seem not to care. I have special ordered one particular item several times and, not only has it never come in, they don't seem to care. Basically, what's going on here is that they make so much money off the supplements they sell that I don't think they give a rat's *** about the fresh products despite the fact that the produce is actually more healthy than the bottles of processed, denatured, chemically-derived "vitamins and minerals." Grrrrrr. Aside from that, I am seriously alarmed about the amount of health information they (especially the manager/owner or whowever she is) are dispensing to customers along with the supplements. Every time I am in there, I hear people with serious health issues asking them for advice and they are then steered to whatever supplement the salesperson says is right for them. These are not health/medical professionals. What are they thinking? To sum it up, if I can calm down enough to do so, Vitamin City is so incredibly frustrating because of what it COULD be but it isn't. They have some great products that no one else carries -- except for Mother's Markets in OC and Erewhon in LA -- but they need to keep only the freshest on their shelves whether that be baby food, seiten, sprouts, or Udo's Oil. As more and more people realize that their health is dependent on what they eat, VC could be a keystone in the health food community. However, they are so unorganized, lackidaisical, unresponsive to their customers, and so bent on the supplement path that they could very well miss the boat. Check it out for yourself. Talk to them, complain, write. Maybe with enough of us saying the same things, they'll step up to the plate. As for me, I'm growing my own. read more

On the plus side, this store has a really wide selection of products and they discount quite a bit, which is nice. The organic produce section is pretty extensive, as well. However, to me customer service and employee attitude/friendliness is #1. The male employees here have been OK. Calvin is great--very friendly and helpful. However, there is a young black gal who is a checker who is downright unfriendly to RUDE. She needs to take a big dose of Sunny Mood by Irwin Naturals or maybe Happy Camper--the "attitude food" supplement would help her. You would think that the owner/management would be aware or concerned about this? Or do they simply not care? This store could be a lot more than it is. read more

Great products (any place that sells raw milk automatically has a loyal customer in me) and great prices. We can get all kinds of awesome gluten-free items and baking mixes here. Reasonably-priced sustainable meats, too. I love that there is a place where I can go and find our toothpaste, organic popcorn, brown rice lasagne noodles, essential oils, grass-fed beef, gluten-free tortillas, and soy-free chocolate chips in one shot and not break the bank, either. Whole Foods and Sprouts are both so far-flung in the Long Beach area, which has been a major source of frustration for me since we moved here. Not the biggest selection, however.... of course, it is a small store and they do well with the space they have. The employees are always helpful and polite. Great shop! All the reviews about how helpful the employees are true. Within 2 minutes of walking in a gentleman asked if I needed help. I told him what I was looking for and he found it for me. I had heard apple cider vinegar and honey can be helpful curing different ailments. I was going to mix it up myself but they actually carry a pre-made apple cider vinegar drink that comes in different flavors. I got one with honey and another with ginger. Also, for the females if you are looking for organic non-bleached tampons they have those too. If only they had sea sponges as well I'd be over the moon. I'll definetly be coming back soon. I'm trying to eat more of a Paleo diet and I found coconut flour and oil here. Excellent grocery options as well as vitamins and other homeopathic supplements. read more

Love the selection and the prices. One checker, I believe her name is Ebony, is absolutely rude, almost hateful or resentful. She never looks me in the eyes, never says thank you or hello. She seems to really hate waiting on people. But then I see her joking around with a customer. Perhaps she graces a very select few customers with human decency and is way beyond rude to the rest of us. See John's comment below. Over the years I've spent probably $7-10K at Vitamin City. That's a lot. You'd think that even someone who just bought a yogurt there once in his entire life would be treated kindly. The guys, esp. the more recent hires, are very kind, friendly, helpful. The owner needs to sit Ebony down and ask her to greatly improve her attitude. I have tried smiling, making small talk, saying hello to her first. None of this works. She often doesn't even respond, as if I'm a non-person or she hasn't heard me or she is not going to waste her time responding to me. She remains hostile. I went here today for the first time looking for something and they didn't have what I was looking for. Surprising because the store is so big and stocked with stuff!! Anyways, I asked an employee about the product who proceeded to ask the manager (I think she was the manager) and she ended up calling two different places she thought would carry what I was looking for and found it for me! She even gave me the address. I'll definitely be going back to look at all the things they have and get some vitamins! I recommend paying this place a visit. Oh and I did get some great detox tea! Everyone is super nice, very helpful. They have a great selection of vitamin's, of course, body care and soaps, packaged foods, and a decent produce selection. It's a smaller store, but they pack a lot of good stuff in there. It's helpful when I'm cooking that they're right next door to Albertsons and across the intersection from Fresh and Easy, so I can get all my cheapy stuff at F&E, come to Vitamin City for the specialty items, like tapioca flour, seitan, veganaise, and then to Albertsons for run of the mill things they don't carry at the other two stores (I'm poor, I bargain shop). The hours are not great, and once I went there and a lot of the things in their cooler in back were expired :( So that's why they miss a star. But I still love Vitamin City! read more

Once in a while I'll come in here for a particular lotion or something, and come out with a couple of other things. I have never purchased bad or old merchandise here, but it's definitely a good idea to check the expiration dates on certain products. Once again I go in to pick the most experienced employee's brain for a nutritional supplement for my needs. I was lucky enough to run in to Calvin who spent about a half hour asking me questions and me asking him questions regarding my dietary needs. I went in to just get some prices but came out a lot wiser and with a product I truly believe is best for me. No hard sale, no condescension just helpful polite service. Came to Vitamin City to get my Organic Pastures milk and was surprised by all they had raw butter, Late July, coconut oil in bulk, ton of pastas and tea...I could go on! Love love love what I can find each time. It is pretty cluttered, as other reviewers have stated and not very clean but anything packaged I wouldn't have a problem buying from them and they do have amazing prices. I usually can find things cheaper than Sprouts and I refuse to go to Whole Foods since they took over Wild Oats. I've been going to Vitamin City for almost 10 years now, and they have been super helpful in helping me find what I need. Honestly, they have so much stuff that I really appreciate the labeled aisles, but you might need a guide for their supplement wall, as it can be overwhelming! Unlike places like GNC, Vitamin City has an organic produce section, along with refrigerated products I can't find at other nearby markets like miso paste, tempeh, sea vegetables, and sprouted wheat and gluten-free breads. Plus, they have all of the "exotic" oils and flours you need for cooking and baking. This place has most of the items you will need if you do the macrobiotic diet, except the umeboshi plums. Oh well, can't have it all, right? I think the store also has a gentle "energy," if you subscribe to that sort of thing. I definitely subscribe to their WAY better prices than Whole Foods Market. read more
