Sadly, Vito's bakery has succumbed to what I call, "New Ownership Syndrome", which means that once new owners take over a business, things go downhill. Vito's was my go-to for Cassata cakes, cannoli, and Italian cookies. The owner sold the bakery to Andiamo's, and things were going well at first, but apparently things have slipped based on my last experience with them, which was this past Friday night. We were having a party for my son's 20th, and we bought cannoli, peaches, and two cakes; a carrot torte, and a yellow cake with buttercream frosting. If you're unfamiliar with "peaches", they're an Italian pastry consisting of a puffy round pastry which is split in half, filled with cannoli cream, and drizzled with syrup. They're decorated to look like peaches, and dusted with powdered sugar. Vito's made particularly good ones; the best ones around here, along with their cannoli which I felt were the best, too. However, things seemed to have really deteriorated. The peaches were barely filled with cannoli cream. It was more like the two sides were just joined together using the cream. I could not discern any syrup soaked into them either. My first clue was when I picked one up and noticed how light it was. I pulled it apart and realized it barely had any cream inside of it, and the pastry was dry as dust. FAIL! Onto the cannoli. I bit into one and immediately noticed that the shell tasted rancid, which means the shells had been fried in old oil. The taste of rancid oil is unmistakable, and very unpleasant. The other factor which made this cannoli so bad was the cream. It was mealy, and lacked the distinct flavor of Italian cinnamon. It was just sweet. The chopped chocolate bits in it didn't even have flavor. I think they use the cheapest ingredients they can get their hands on to increase their profit margin. It was the worst cannoli I have had from a bakery, and Vito's always had the best! FAIL!! The carrot torte was dry and awful tasting. The layers were so hard and dry that the frosting in the center was being squeezed out as I was slicing the cake. The only reason for this could be that the cake layers were dense and dry. I took a bite to confirm my suspicion, and I was right; the cake layers were extremely dry. Combine dryness with the density of a carrot cake and what you have on your hands is a brick, not a cake. I was embarrassed to serve the cake to our guests, it was that bad. The yellow cake was moist, the frosting was decent, and it was decorated nicely. That was the only thing we brought home that was good. Suffice to say, I will not be returning to Vito's. The cost of their baked goods was justifiable when they were good. I absolutely do not mind paying more money for delicious food. However, I cannot bring myself to shell out my hard earned cash for the garbage we brought home on Friday night. Luckily, Tringali Bakery is still in business, and still making things the way they used to. It's a hike from my house, but I'll make the drive to get good Italian pastries, and I'll pay the money for them, too. read more

I'm not just another dago praising an Italian owned business when I say this place is hands down the best bakery in the Metro-Detroit area! There are subtle differences in the tastes of northern Italians and us southern (Sicilian) ones, and Vito's definitely delivers in the southern tip (no pun intended). I'll start with the crazy good assortment of cakes, cookies, and cannoli. First off, you can't find good cannoli very often, and even more rare is a good ricotta cannoli. Vito serves up both varieties and both are great (I am partial to the ricotta filled). The vanilla shell is not overly fried, thus they are less greasy then most bakeries cannoli are. Next, Vito has a superior muffuletta. The top is perfectly crisp with sesame seeds and a little olive oil, and the bottom is the same. Sandwiched between the two is ham and provolone cheese, and when baked the entirety of the sandwich is out of this world. Moreover, the sfigione (a Sicilian-styled, vegetarian pizza, for lack of a better description) is the best I've had next to my Nona's, which I haven't had since the late 90's. The sauce is just sweet enough without giving way to the spices, onion and grated cheese. It is a must if you stop in. Lastly, the lemon ice is...how do I convey its perfectness? Let's put it this way-if their lemon ice was a woman I'd have cheated on my girlfriend with her. The ratio of tartness to icy splendor is just right, and the consistency is not too creamy. It's maybe my favorite thing to get here. My only gripe with Vito's is that they don't make the lemon ice all year long. For the last 3 years I purchase an obscene amount to last me until the Christmas season, so I can not just spread some holiday cheer, but I also spread some lemon ice into a shallow bowl and top it with some fresh berries for the perfect after dinner dessert. While killing some time on the East side of Michigan, we used Yelp to explore what was nearby. Up popped Vito's Bakery! We decided to treat ourselves and check out what they had to offer. You walk in to see the most beautiful items on display, all of them looking delicious behind the glass but knowing you can't fit all of them into your belly. We decided to try a mini cream puff, a mini eclair, a mini cannoli, and a cannoli with cherries. We didn't even save them until we got home, we just stuffed ourselves in the parking lot with the goodies. All of the items were amazing to eat, and the mini sizes make them just right for sharing and sampling. My favorite was the cannoli. My only regret is they are not closer to home for us. If you are on the East side, please do yourself a favor and drop in to try something for yourself or perhaps take home a treat for the family. I just had the WORSE experience with Vito's bakery. I phoned to confirm a particular item was in-stock & a young girl replied with a very snotty "well.....we should...." When I asked if she could CHECK so that I don't waste a trip, SHE HUNG UP ON ME. I phoned 3 more times & each & every time when I asked the girl to confirm they had it, she hung up. I have been going to Vito's Bakery for years! Growing up close to this bakery and stopping almost every weekend with my Grandma has given me memories I'll never forget. In my opinion, the best Bakery in Metro-Detroit. They have amazing desserts, cakes, quick lunches & fresh bread. They made my wedding cake which was cassatta cake and it was absolutely delicious. The desserts here are some of my absolute favorites! Cassata cake is incredible and have ordered large one for quite a few events and is always met with rave reviews. Chocolate tuxedo cake is so delicious. Layer of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, white chocolate mousse, covered in chocolate ganache. My top favorite is the kit kat cake. It's filled with the most amazing rich chocolate mousse, with the kit kat like pieces inside, enrobed in chocolate ganache. Disappointed does not even begin to express how i feel about my shower cake yesterday. I used Vitos Bakery last year for my bridal shower and my first name was spelled wrong. Didn't make a fuss about it and still ordered my wedding cassata cake from them which was fine. Fast forward, my baby shower was yesterday and i was talked into ordering an extra kitchen cake we didn't need. The 5 pound cookie tray tasted stale. The cake that was decorated tasted weird. When i called this morning to complain they didn't offer to refund anything nor give us a credit for the mistake just a flimsy I'm sorry. Vito's makes the best cannolis, whether you're looking for the cream filled cannoli or the cheese filled cannoli you will not be let down. Growing up that's where my mother would get cassata cakes for my birthday. Cassata cake is a beautiful thing in between the layers of cake is thick layers of the cannoli filling and I don't know if it's still the same way but back then there would be a little amaretto that have been put on the cake before they iced it totally wonderful and great other items they have there are fantastic and currently they have Italian Ice strawberry and lemon if you get the opportunity to go in there you will not regret it read more

It was honestly not good at all. I.bought 2 different cannoli's one with just creme and one with ricotta. The creme one was decent while the ricotta was terrible. This lady was way older screaming at a teenager. If that kid was my daughter I would kick that lady's ass. Very unprofessional on that older lady's part. I've tried almost everything they make in the past year and I gotta say, their desserts can't be beat! The peaches, kit kat bar, bumpy cake and cassata cake are our favorites. The pizza and sfinguini are just so-so. I love when a bakery sells make and bake pizzas but I grew up with DIB (Dearborn Italian Bakery) pizza and this one can't even come close. Yeah, it's a little pricy if you're used to picking up cupcakes and sheet cakes at Meijer the day of the party. Yeah, this is all "the reals" folks. It's not good for you. It's all full of fat, butter, sugar, cream...you know, all of the stuff that actually TASTES GOOD. And yeah...the stuff is THAT good. It's worth it. This isn't really where you come to pick up a birthday cake to feed a bunch of snot-nosed bratty kids running in off the slip & slide to maw down a handful of sugar before heading back out to whip across the yard...well, you can, but you're spoiling them and we should talk about you adopting me, but that's a chat for another time. But if you're looking for something a step above normal, and really want to do something awesome for someone...then this is where you go. Whether that's a dessert for you and your significant other for after a nice meal at home, or an anniversary party, or something along those lines...this place is DEFINITELY one that should be really high up on your radar screen. When it comes to italian cakes, I know no other place in Michigan better than Vito's. A friend of mine bought me a small cassata cake for a special occasion... and Boy was it good! The filling was ultra fresh and velvety and the cake... well, the cake was perfect: moist, fluffy, and light. As it happened to Proust with the infamous madelaines, when I took a bite out of Vito's cassata I felt immediately transported to the first time I tasted this cake at the best Italian restaurant in my hometown. After eating the last piece of my cassata, I begged my friend to take me to this dessert haven, so that I might take a look at what Vito offers. The place looks like any italian bakery, an ample store with lots of refrigerators and glass encased counters, plus two tables and a couple of chairs to sit and enjoy a treat. In this first expedition I tried their cannoli. They are baked fresh everyday and come in two sizes: regular and mini. The cookie was crisp and the cream was fresh, so I am giving them two thumbs up. Next time I'll go I will try the lobster tails, and the ricotta cartoccci... It is so good to know that there is a good quality italian bakery so close to home! read more
