I've been going to Viva at least twice a year for cleaning and X-rays, and the occasional filling for at least 8 years. I did some research when Dr Nguyen was starting to build his practice. He's a USC graduate and I was impressed from day one with this competent, calm, respectful manner. I really appreciate the quality of cleanings. High speed vibrations are used to clean tartar around teeth - no long scraping sessions. The staff is thorough, thoughtful and very kind. The call if you are asked to be put on the cancellation list and can address emergencies in a pretty timely manner. As the practice has grown, it takes a little longer to get an appointment, which speaks to the growth and depth of his practice. When I first started going to Dr Nguyen, my then 9 year old twins wanted to switch from a pediatric dentist to go to Dr Nguyen because I was raving about my very clean, beautiful teeth. I've been coming here for four years. When I called in recently to schedule a teeth cleaning appointment, the front desk said they no longer accept my health insurance. 3 years later and he's still the freakin' best. my mom lives in daly city but her local dentist sucks ass. she needed a deep cleaning, a few extractions, a crown, and partial dentures on her top and bottom jaw (she's old). i didn't trust her local dentist to take care of everything correctly because of a poor experience previously. plus, his price quotes were outrageous! i contacted viva dental again even though it's all the way in san jose because i trust dr. nguyen. he has always given sound and considerate advice to me and my sister so i trusted that he would take care of my mom just as kindly. i took my mom in on a monday at 2pm. we were out of there around 3. he did her deep cleaning, took molds for her crown and extracted a tooth all within that time frame. most importantly, his work is legit! the quality was not compromised just because it was done quickly. he's just so experienced that he knew exactly how to do the job correctly and efficiently. i guess it also helps that my mom doesn't have many teeth left hahaha! anyway, the most impressive thing is my mom wouldn't stop gushing about how phenomenally adept he is at his work. now, you should know that my mom is the typical asian mom, praise doesn't come easily because there is always room for improvement in her mind. when it came to dr. nguyen though, she wouldn't stop telling everyone about his gentle yet firm touch. she said she didn't feel her extraction at all, and there was hardly any bleeding (this is important because her local dentist did an extraction for her and i almost had to take her into the ER due to blood loss b/c the dentist didn't do anything to prevent the bleeding upon extraction). she said she was really scared at first (bc of what happened with the other dentist), but by the time he started, she trusted him completely. we're going back in a couple a couple weeks to try on the dentures and get her crown fitted. i'm still so glad i found dr. nguyen! by the way, his staff is super sweet and competent. they really know how to make sure there are no logistical misunderstandings or mix ups during the entire course of contact. not sure if that matters to you, but since i was trying to get her insurance to pay for as much as possible it was important to me. read more

At first I was a bit skeptical about this place even after reading the Yelp reviews since a lot of them at that time came from people with less than 5 reviews.... (sorry for judging!) But I took my chances! There was a good reason why I took my chances: I no longer had dental insurance and sure as hell Denti-Cal doesn't do much except teeth cleaning and extractions. I really needed to get a root canal performed and I knew it was going to be expensive. I lost my dental insurance after graduating from grad school. One options was I could purchase individual dental insurance but it did not seem economical at the moment with the deductibles and monthly payments just for a root canal. (It might be economical if you are planning to do a lot of more other routines.) After calling a bunch of other dentists, the best they can do was offer me a dental discount program (not the same as dental insurance). However, I found out about Viva Dental accidentally when I was looking for dentists that accepted a certain dental discount program. After contacting them, they responded to my email and gave me a call pretty quickly. They actually did not accept the dental discount program I was looking at BUT THEY HAD AMAZING RATES WITHOUT OUT. Their quote was way cheaper than other dentists I called, without and with dental discount programs. Of course with a quote that low, I was still skeptical but I trusted my gut and my tooth pain. Before this review gets too long, the bottom line about my experience: all those 4+ stars reviews are true. My root canal procedure was painless. The anesthetic shots Dr. Nguyen gave me 4+ times were the least painful shots. Ever. Dr. Nguyen and his staff knows what they were doing. He may be a younger and newer dentist but he seems like he had years of experience. Also, this dental office is super nice and new! And clean! :) read more

I must say my experience at Viva Dental Group was very positive, which is a big deal for me because I usually dread visiting dentists. In fact, I haven't had a dental visit in about 5 years due to my negative experiences at past dental clinics. It was clean and has a modern touch that I thought was nice. It seems all of my previous dentists picked up the wall art from garage sales back in the 70's... so this was a refreshing change. This guy was trying to rub both me and my wife! He told us we both need deep cleaning because of blah blah, I have to redo both of my crowns and get two new ones and have 6 cavities. He told my wife she needs 2 crowns. Luckily we did not have insurance so we delayed the treatment plan and after we searched and asked a little we found out that deep cleaning is necessary in rare cases so we forget about him. 1 year late, we finally found a trustworthy dentist through our friends and guess what my wife only needed 2-3 cavities to be taken care of and I needed 2-3 cavities and ONE partial crown. And none of my other crowns needed any change. Also, our "exam and cleaning" here took like half an hour each, while at our new dentist they spent 1.5 hours to check everything! read more

This was my first visit as a patient of Viva Dental. I came for a general cleaning and x-ray exam. Pros: -The staff and assistants are very friendly, gentle, and helpful. The lady at the front desk helped explain why my follow-up is necessary. -Clean, sterile, and well-decorated office Cons: - Besides when telling me when he was going to begin the plaque removal and cleaning processes, Dr. Nguyen did not really walk me through what he was doing. After the cleaning, he just told me that I could pay for the exam at the front desk. I didn't even know about the follow-up procedures that are needed until I got to the front desk and was told that I need to come back for a deep cleaning and cavity filling. This is by far the best experience I've had at the dentist. My last dentist tricked me into paying for a service I did not care for AND gave me a 3-day treatment plan that would be $400+. So, I came here for a second opinion. Once the doctor saw me and I explained my situation and concerns, he gave me a check up and let me know exactly what I needed to get done and what procedures were just for cosmetic purposes. From that point on, I decided to have my dental work by him. I am ridiculously afraid of the dentist and have a terrible habit of slowly closing my mouth the more scared I am. The doctor made me feel comfortable and told me exactly what he was doing and what I should expect so that there were no surprises while he was working on my teeth. His dental assistant was also very gentle as well! Definitely the best experience I've ever had. My teeth feel a lot better now and I'm so happy I found this place. This office had good reviews so I decided to give it a try. The receptionist was very nice and helpful with my insurance questions, which I had a lot since I have dental insurance now. The office is very clean and carefully looked after it seems like. The wait was very short and they are very good with appointment times. I was very nervous but the doctor was very gentle. This place is the best dental office I've been to thus far. The décor is nice and the service was great! Everyone there was very friendly and I was in and out in no time. When I was led to my chair, I was greeted by a huge TV screen showing ESPN Sportscenter which was perfect for me to catch up on the football highlights. I came in for checkup after years of not going. I ended up needing to do cleaning and some minor fillings, but it was probably the most comfortable experience I have had in a while. Usually, I would have to bear some pain when they're hitting my gums but the dentist here was super gentle and I barely felt a thing. Viva dental has been my dental clinic for 3 years now. By far they have been the best Dental clinic in my life. They are very friendly and professional. I have gotten my wisdom tooth taken out, fillings replaced, teeth whitened, a crown replaced, deep cleaning at a fair payable price. Not like other dental clinics where you come out with a huge bill. Doctor Nguyen is detailed when he's explaining about the procedures, and what needs to be done for me. Then after that her dental assistant will come to me and explain again the process. I found this place through yelp. It seems to have great reviews when I was trying to find a dentist. Upon my arrival, I signed in and was given paperwork to fill out. The receptionist was friendly and seems knowledgeable. As I was beginning to fill out paperwork, I was brought inside to take x-rays. It seems abrupt and I usually get time to finish filling out paperwork at other medical offices. Meeting Dr. Nguyen, which I assumed because he did not introduced himself, he did not try to conversate much. I give this place only 3 stars because I have been to other dentist that spends much longer than 15 minutes cleaning my teeth. I notice Dr. Nguyen doesn't use the tool to remove/scrape the plaque build up like other dentists I been to. Given that, a deep cleaning was reccommended (costs $400) in which other dentist covers it. After the teeth cleaning, I was told that the front desk would talk to me more. Dr. Nguyen lacks to personally let me know as his patient what he recommends which makes this dental office so so. The search for another dentist continues! read more

Hated going to the dentist. For couple reasons: 1. Long waits 2. 1980's equipment 3. Dentist had "HEAVY hand" (painful). This is the complete opposite at Viva Dental. NO MORE long waits, I was in and out, 20 minutes for a cleaning. The equipment is all brand new and modern. As far as the dentist, Duong Nguyen, is patient, fast and has pain-free hands. On top of Dr. Nguyen, he has a very helpful and attentive assistant, Kiara. Another plus was the big screen TVs everywhere(Lobby and Exam Rooms), was able to watch World Cup game as I was getting my cleaning. Overall the office was very clean, modern and professional. However, the photos you see posted on yelp is what you get in the interior. Well-maintained, new, clean furnishings and equipment. The receptionist/assistant is professional and informative, readily able to answer questions about the billing process and and dental procedures using models for visual demonstration. She was approachable and friendly as well. Dr. Duong Nguyen was honest, nice and did well in explaining his observations from the x-rays and oral examination. He provided options and referrals. I went in for a cleaning, him and his assistant were very delicate, efficient and professional. It's so hard finding a good dentist that I wish I didn't have to move away. Duong has been taking care of my teeth for the last 3 years. I remember having a toothache and when I called in, they met with me the same day. After taking an x-ray, Duong told me he didn't see any cavities or abscesses and that I just had sensitive teeth that's probably due to the cold weather at the time. They're real honest here and don't perform procedures that are not needed unlike other dentists I've had. I'm still looking for a dentist here in East Bay, and I hope I can find one honest as Duong. read more
