They were able to take me in right away, and I had the pleasure of being with Alejandro, who absolutely slayed my blowout and curls! I'm honestly blown away (pun intended). Tried twice to get an appointment for a hair cut. one time they were closed, I had gone during business hrs and it said they took walk ins. There are a ton of talented stylists in the Chicagoland area but I really wanted to comment on the experience that I had at Kahlo Salon in Norwood Park. I was due for a hair refresher (color and cut) and didn't feel like venturing to my go-to in Chinatown because I needed something last minute. I found Kahlo Salon based on not only its YELP reviews but the stunning Frida Kahlo aesthetic at the salon. What I love about Frida is not only her respectable background (she went through A LOT) but the way her artwork reflected her true emotional journey that was her life. I love the colors and depth of her paintings. Kahlo Salon itself is a shrine to Frida and the owner, Veronica, has a ton of paintings in her honor- that she brought back from Mexico! I could write about this place forever but let's cut this short. Stylist: I went to see Maya. She is SOOOO talented. She may be young but she has such a humble yet passionate spirit about hair and color. She took her time and asked what I wanted. She trusted her intuition and provided me with the most amazing blend of colors and EXACTLY what I was picturing in my head. My hair color was beautiful- full of natural highlights and golden shimmer. She put subtle highlights, toned it, and finally added gloss and Moroccan oil treatment. Highly disappointed. I read all the reviews and based my decision to try this salon on those reviews. Truly regret relying on those reviews. It has been a week since my hair cut by Veronica. I gave my hair time to settle into the cut she gave me before writing this review. I have natural wave to my hair. Wave not frizz! I explained what I wanted to Veronica. My hair had grown and was too heavy. I asked for slight layering to remove the weight. I showed her a picture of the cut I had worn for years and always worked for me. Here are the things that made me want to run: 1. She took a comb out of a drawer. 2. She used a round brush covered in other peoples hair. I have black hair, there was lots of blond hair stuck on the brush.... (yes, I wanted to run and wish I had just said forget it and left) 3. Using such a brush with hair stuck on it will cause tangles on the person you are blowing out! She kept hurting me as my hair was getting caught on the brush! This has never happened to me at any salon! 4. I felt something on the back of my hair I looked at the mirror and she was using a flat iron type devise on my hair! I asked her what she was doing! She said she didn't want to keep hurting me so was using this! I said absolutely not! This will burn my hair. She seemed upset that I stopped her! 5. She dried my hair then started cutting more hair! She left my hair so uneven, frizzy and difficult to style ! I am worse for going to this place. 6. She did suggest I consider the Brazilian treatment for my hair! Again, I have wave to my hair not frizz or unmanageable hair. Her suggestion clearly indicates she is limited in her abilities. I wish I had not spent the money for such a bad job... Today I went to Kahlo salon for the first time. This was the best experience I have ever had getting my hair done. I walked in, the salon was very stylish and clean. I was greeted immediately at the door when I walked in and offered a beverage. Nice touch. I had an appointment and my stylist, the amazing Ana, was available right at my scheduled time. I received a partial highlight and cut. First, to talk about my partial, Ana was extremely quick and meticulous when applying foils. I have a good amount of hair and she knocked it out in no time at all. She did have another client at the same time who had color processing at the same time. She displayed some serious time management skills: during my highlight the other client had color processing, she had her assistant shampoo and tone her. Shortly after she was done with my foils. While I was processing, she cut, blow dried and styled the other client while her assistant shampooed my hair and applied a gloss. She made us both feel like important and valued clients. You can tell that she really values her clients perception of herself and her business. I have not had that great of an experience at any salon EVER. Ana is an amazing stylist who puts forth high quality work every single time. Extremely well worth every penny. I've been looking for "my stylist" for the past three years and I'm happy to say I've found her! I will be back! read more

DO NOT GO HERE!! i have been a loyal customer of Veronica's for over 9 years. I came in for a balayage and she basically gave me the worst partial highlights. (Look at the picture). Everything from her technique to process of color is wrong! She is extremely sloppy. I showed her a picture of balayage and she tried to convince me that it looks just like the picture. My hair came out orange and streaky. She tried to do another toner and it still looked awful. Mind you, I called ahead to ask how long balayage would take. Veronica said it would take "1-2 hours". A true balayage takes longer than 4 hours!!! She was also distracted with her other clients. When I reached back to her, she stopped answering. I use to come to this salon for Tatiana, who was amazing. The salon smells like rotten mold. Even Tatiana and the other salonists quit because they couldn't deal with this. I will never come here again! I had to go to another stylist who finally fixed my hair! read more

Got a Groupon to see Alejandro & had a great experience. He was running behind--luckily I was in no rush--but he took his time finishing up the style of the woman before me. Some people might be annoyed by this, but I was impressed. I loved that he stayed in the moment with his client & was intent on doing a great job even under pressure. When it was my turn, he gave my cut the same attention. It was amazing--even wet before any styling it looked great. I went to Viva La Frida because my hairdresser that I went to for years moved, and this salon got such great reviews. Veronica cut my hair. Veronica was very nice, friendly, and she seemed to know the different techniques for a good haircut. I showed her a picture and explained that I did not want any layers, my hair does not look good with layers. I wanted a long straight bob, not graduated, and without the bulk at the bottom, so it needed to be point cut. I have worn my hair that way for a long time, and know that my hair can work with that cut. Even though I have naturally wavy hair, I blow dry it straight. The problem is the haircut I left with was definitely not what I wanted. She started out great, point cutting like my previous stylist used to, but then she picked up the thinning shears, and then finally cut a very weird much shorter mid layer in the back of my hair between my top and bottom layers. So now my wavy hair is much harder to blow dry straight because that layer is so short it is hard to grip with the round brush to straighten. When I got home I realized that the layer at the nape of my neck was about an inch longer than the top layer and uneven. Plus the haircut was a couple of inches shorter than it was supposed to be. So between the thinning shears, the funky layers and the uneven cut, my once thick hair looks scraggly. Judging from the great reviews she has received, I know Veronica can do a good haircut. I just think that she assumed my hair wouldn't work with that cut, and despite what I said, she decided that it needed layers. I just need a hairstylist that will trust me when I tell her what works and doesn't work with my hair, since I am the one who has lived with it for so many years. I think so many people have given great reviews of this salon, my review shouldn't deter anyone from trying them, but just make sure you are very clear about exactly what you want, and watch what they are doing closely. read more

I was very hopeful when I found this salon on Yelp and read all of the positive reviews. However, I was very much mistaken. As most women know, hair is an extremely important part of one's appearance. Even if we may not be feeling attractive or without makeup, hair can make or break the situation. Apparently, the employees of Kahlo Salon do not understand this fact. I have been looking for a salon ever since my friend moved away. She was my hair dresser and by the way, an amazing one. All I was looking for was a trim and to get my roots done - this means matching your roots to the rest of your hair. That being said, my roots do not match the rest of my hair AT ALL. At the salon, I saw a slight difference but due to the dim light, I did not fully see how horrible it looked until I got home. My roots literally look orange and the rest of my hair is blond with low-lights. Devon was the name of the girl that attempted to do my hair. She seemed like a very nice person and we talked a bit, but she clearly did not know what she was doing. I told her my friend used to do my hair and she asked me if I knew the brand and number of the dye. Obviously, hair stylists should be able to look in their color book and match up the color. I was never asked this question before. I should have known then to get up and leave, but I was still hopeful from the Yelp reviews that she would do a good job. She told me that she has been a hair stylist for a couple of years and I am appalled that she still has not learned anything. The only decent thing she did was trimming my hair, which does not say much. On top of that, the receptionist at Kahlo Salon was unbelievably rude. She seemed nice at first when she offered me something to drink, but as soon as it was time to pay up, that all changed. I had bough a YouSwoop deal for this salon and the receptionist rolled her eyes and sighed when I had not printed the coupon. Who prints coupons nowadays in the age of smart phones? Why waste paper? The number was clearly visible on my phone. There was also another customer ahead of me who was also appalled. Finally, she took our numbers down and then, she charged me the wrong amount at first and if I had not pointed it out, I would have paid far less. Then, she asked me to say out loud how much I would like to tip! Now, I am forced to go to another salon and fix this mess on my head. I would never trust these "hairstylists" to do this for me. Went for a Groupon for highlights, cut and deep oil conditioning treatment. Saw the owner. She did an amazing job and couldn't be nicer. Took her time, got it right, and was extremely experienced and welcoming. Asked many questions about my hair routine, like a hair doctor. She didn't put a bunch of product in my hair like some stylists do and it looked amazing. Received numerous compliments on the cut and color. Going to make this my regular place after several failed stylists and Groupon experiences. This one is a winner...give it a try!!! She also gives u a discount if u refer someone. This continues to be my go to spot. Veronica wasn't available (she's awesome!) when I booked last week so I saw Ana (who is also fabulous), I believe that's her name. She is leveled at the highest level so she does charge a bit more. Love my subtle darker highlights. She worked with my faded bayalage to create something that flowed and looks so fresh! Their new talent is Maya who I hear is also good, and her services cost less. I've hit the hair salon jackpot! Three visits in almost a year and I have loved every visit. My original visit was due to a Groupon I saw and I'm have never been more greatful to Groupon :) My hair has had the pleasure of having Miriam for both color and cut. The first time I went, it felt like I have been going to her for years. She's friendly, funny and most importantly knows what she's doing. Both color and cut are always on point. Ten minutes after leaving her today, I was immediately complimented on my hair! But, it's not just Miriam that makes Kahlo so great. From the receptionist to the other stylist, everyone is so nice! I went to Kahlo because of a Groupon - and will be back again because of Anna, who is an amazing stylist. Like you, I first checked Yelp before purchasing the Groupon and saw a large enough number of reviews that I thought it must be legit. When I first walked in I was a little concerned because it isn't the fanciest place. When I walked out - almost three hours later - it was with a haircut and color that I just love and that still looks great 3 weeks later. Anna was meticulous - she kept finessing and I couldn't quite understand what she was doing that was taking so long! But now I have a haircut that looks great whether I wash it and go, or spend 5 minutes styling it for a totally different look. So Kahlo is my new go-to salon. The only thing I would change about it is the music - it was relentless R&B and I'm not a fan. So next time I will wear ear plugs - but I will be back again and again. Highly recommend! read more

My niece found this salon recently and has been raving about it. She has very curly hair and is delighted with how Veronica cuts it. I needed my roots dyed, my highlights freshened up, and a trim. The salon itself is clean and upscale. I was treated wonderfully throughout my time there. Great refreshments and friendly staff. Veronica, the salon owner, evaluated my hair needs, listened to what I had in mind, and recommended that I consider going a tad darker than the overall color I had. She explained why and I went with it. I am extremely happy with the results and made my next appointment with her before leaving the salon. He was incredibly friendly and a joy to talk to. I also have to commend the precautions in place due to COVID-19. I was the only customer in the salon. First of all, if you are a Frida Kahlo fan you need to stop in just see some of the decor in this salon- It's like you died and went to Frida heaven. But the best reason to stop in is definitely for the service. I called for an appointment and was immediately accommodated. I went in on Friday and met with Veronica the owner who was also my stylist. I had many concerns about my hair and my haircut and she discussed my options and gave me so much information about styles, textures, and hair growth in general-she is extremely knowledgeable. I also suffered some health issues which have affected my hair (and growth), Veronica was so genuinely kind and understanding to my condition and she did her best to make sure I felt like a princess. She gave me the most beautiful and flattering hair cut I have ever had! She made me look and feel so beautiful and for that alone she is priceless. I've been in Chicago for ten years but never really committed to a hairdresser. Since I don't usually heat-style my hair, I can go a long time without a cut. So I bounce around, following recommendations, having a friend cut it, whatever. Because I live SO CLOSE to Kahlo, I couldn't turn down the Groupon deal for a conditioning treatment and cut. Miriam was my stylist, and I will definitely go back to her in the future. First of all, she listened attentively while I explained my hair (very thick and complex, with different textures in different spots) and I gave her the rundown on former styles and what worked/didn't work. I gave her free reign to pick a style, and she explained what she would do and why it would suit me. I felt listened to - awesome! She took her time with the cut and explained why she was doing certain things, which was another nice touch. We had good conversation throughout, another nice touch. What I really appreciated was how thorough she was: She showed my the "end result" before styling it, since I explained I usually just scrunch my wet hair and that's it. Miriam made sure I was happy since that's how it would look every day, then blew it out so we could see how everything lay, and then consulted with me on whether I liked it as is (a bit edgy) or if I wanted to soften it up a bit. I opted to her have her soften it up, another 15 minutes or so of cutting. She really took the time to give me a cut that was right for me, especially looking it over and then continuing to cut after it was dried and styled. The appointment was about 90 minutes, part of which was the conditioning treatment, but still longer than expected. I never felt rushed though - and maybe I'm repeating myself - it was so nice to feel like her priority was to give me the right cut. read more
