Viva Margarita There are several Viva Margarita restaurants throughout New Jersey, and I've had the opportunity to visit both the Hackensack location and the one in Hazlet The consistency between the two is remarkable. From the vibrant décor and lively atmosphere to the warm, attentive service, both restaurants deliver the same high-quality experience. Most importantly, the food is outstanding. Add an excellent selection of margaritas and an impressive collection of tequilas, and you have all the ingredients for a memorable meal. The tableside guacamole is simple but very good. Since it's prepared right at your table, you can customize the spice level to your liking. The steak tampiqueña is, in my opinion, the best north of Tampico. The flank steak was tender, juicy, perfectly marinated, and expertly cooked. Served with rice, refried beans, warm tortillas, and traditional accompaniments, it was simply exceptional. Don't eat here if you have a gluten allergy or are a celiac. They will give you a flour tortilla and tell you it's corn without even checking. I told the server I am allergic and specifically ordered a corn tortilla. It came out and it looked like flour tortilla to me so I asked the waiter and he assured me it was corn without even checking it. The manager also came over and assured me it was corn without checking it. I made the mistake of trusting them instead of trusting my instincts and ate it and almost immediately after I was done had a reaction. If I was severely allergic I would be in the hospital right now. They don't take allergies seriously here. It's a shame because the food is pretty good. Such a cute spot! I'll admit I was a little hesitant at first since it's right next to the Holiday Inn and looks a bit cheesy from the outside, but once we walked in, the vibe was really nice. We came on Taco Tuesday, so our tacos were half-price--and they were delicious! We tried the chicken, barbacoa, and shrimp. My favorite was the shrimp, while my husband loved the chicken, though the barbacoa was also really good. Highly recommend checking this place out. Oh boy! What a disaster this restaurant is. Food was bad, asked them to make it multiple times and yet they got it wrong. Raw veggies were used. Service is so slow that I felt like I aged 5 years.servers just want to chit chat and not work with bad attitude. This server literally cursed in Spanish when I called him (I do know Spanish). Ambiance is ok not like authentic Mexican food and NOT like viva's other franchises. What a shame. They don't even apologize. read more

Food is the usual Mexican fare. Place was very clean looked brand new nice decor and the service was superb. We were there for happy hour and got discounts on our tacos and drinks. Definitely would return if I'm in the area. read more

The service was fantastic. We sat at the bar. Margaritas were yummy. I had a chimichanga. No meat being a pescatarian. Fantastic! They have plant based chorizo which was phenomenal. Hidden gem attached to Holiday inn. So many margarita options to choose from and food was pretty good but the drinks are the show here. Went for a casual Friday night out and it was a good time. They have a lady walking around who takes pictures with the option to buy. It was just a little noisy because the place was packed out. Other than that. It was a good time. read more

Staying at the Holiday Inn, in town for a funeral. There were 11 of us that went in around 8:45. Not 1 person in the restaurant. Greeted by a very nice waitress. Explained we were drinking not eating, could we sit at a long center counter height table. "Absolutely " she said. A short little man yelled across the restaurant "if you're just drinking you have to sit at the bar". I ask if he was willing to give up a $300 tab by telling us where to sit? He said "at the bar or get out ". I went down the street and bought $100 in beer wine and High Noon's and sat in the lobby for 2 1/2 hours. Great Holiday Inn management never bothered us. We had a great time on our own. They also lost out on the group for breakfast. Not sure why a restaurant would employ someone who doesn't want customers. read more

I understand the people at the bar want louder music but you definitely need to control the volume of music in the back room separately from the bar area, it's impossible to have any conversation with the loud music! We were there a month ago and the music was so loud that we asked waitress to turn it down. I had fajitas that were excellent. Our waitress was excellent. Went last night with friends and we were very disappointed. The music was very loud again and waitress had them turn it down, then the manager turned it up. The fajitas were totally different. My first visit to Viva Margarita was with my son. When we walked into the foyer, I was pleased to see some dia de los muertos (Day of the dead) decor. It immediately brought on a feel of fun and welcome. As we entered the restaurant, I smiled when I saw the various other festive decor items as well as the wall colors. The hostess sat us in a back corner in the main room. I noticed the ceiling needed a bit of TLC. The waitress came to take our drink order and, per our request, gave us more time to come up with our food orders. Despite there being several empty tables, between the loud music and the waitress' heavy accident, giving our food order was a little arduous. Additionally, the wait for the food seemed long, especially considering the restaurant was not full. The food was very good and priced fairly, albeit nothing to jump up and down for joy over. Our bill's total was $49. This was for two entrees and two unsweetened iced teas. A nearby Mexican restaurant generally costs $40 for the same and, in my humble opinion, the same quality food but better service. The topper was in paying. I put a $100 bill in the bill fold. The waitress came back (same time later) and said, "We don't have exact change so we charged you $50. Is that ok with you?" She opened the bill fold to show me that the $100 bill had been changed in to 5 $10 bills. A bit dumbfounded, I was silent for a few seconds before explaining this was not ok with me. I asked for my $100 back and exclaimed I would pay with my credit card. When the waitress returned, the bill fold had 10 $10 bills in it. I checked the bill to ensure there was not a credit card fee before handing it back with my credit card. That ended that experience. My thoughts later were: 1. The manager should have come to the table to explain the situation rather than send the waitress. 2. They should've charge me less, not more, to compensate for their lack of change. 3. While some said I should've simply tipped less, I didn't feel the waitress should be 'punished' for something that was not her fault. My second visit to Viva Margarita was with my BF. This was a different, but sadly not better experience. This time, the restaurant was packed, and although the music was not as loud, the restaurant commotion was very loud. The ceilings are low and there is nothing that can buffer the acoustics. For this experience, I will simply list the issues: 1. It was too loud. 2. The service was very slow 3. I asked for napkins 3 times from two people 4. Our appetizer was brought out but we didn't have plates. 5. We were already done eating the appetizer, and the entrees had already arrived when I inquired not once, but twice as to the whereabouts of our iced teas. 6. First time there, drinks were good service was slow, facility was clean. Sizzling fajitas that was ordered was not sizzling and they have a red sauce on it. They asked me how I was and I said I never had fajitas with red sauce so she got the manager and she says, why didn't you say something when we asked you how it was? AMAZING new Mexican spot! We ordered a margherita, getting there right before the end of happy hour, and it tasted amazing. Our waiter was so kind and made us feel right at home! The ambience was amazing, but the music is WAY too loud. We had to scream in order to talk and it felt like the music hurt my ears at times. We got the nachos and while it was good and we had a lot of meat and such, we felt there just weren't enough chips. I got the mole chimichanga and it tasted amazing! The barbicoa was really good. My parents got the molcajete. Despite how expensive it was, the meat tasted SO GOOD and VERY WELL COOKED! I am usually stingy about meat, but when I tried it, I fell in love. RIPPED OFF !!!! We were having a great experience for our first time here. We used to go to TST and were excited for this place to take over. Good atmosphere, good drink selection and our appetizers were okay. Until we got our bill.. my wife had 2 margaritas which cost $16 each. They were a little too sweet so she order a "Floater" ..an extra shot on the side. When we got our bill we noticed we were charged $14 per shot...that's a $35 dollar drink, which is absolutely insane. It was $2 less than a margarita.. When we brought it to the managers attention she wasn't very much help, argued with us and blamed the owner on the prices when we paid close to $70 dollars for 2 drinks..I wish we can say we are returning but we will not be. Lastly, we met our families here and we got separate tables and separate checks .. they put party gratuity on each of the tables checks. We are not cheap and most of us worked in the restaurant business and have managed them.. I'm 99% sure it is illegal to place gratuity on a check of a table of 2.. has to be 6 or more.
