This place was rec by someone who really has hit the mark on most recommendations... unfortunately this one missed the mark. The line was out the door and literally across the street. No big deal because good gelato places have a line and we are willing to wait... you first go inside to give your order to the cashier then give your ticket to the person scooping gelato. The lady scooping was not very kind and VERY stingy on scoop size. We have been to multiple different gelato places in Florence and Olbia, Sardinia... this one was my least favorite... kinda chaotic waiting then one line inside to the cashier overlaps the "who wants to order" non line for gelato... the scoops hit just the top of the cup- compared to other places where the gelato is heaping over the cup and you quickly lick and scoop it into your mouth so it doesn't melt in 98F... I choose the second smallest cup for 3 Euros and picked two flavors. The 'GIANDUIA' and 'TIRAMISU' choices were ok but nothing to the extent where I'd come back especially since the scoops for all four of us were stingy and small. Theres tons of other places that serve legit gelato (not the gelato mountains sitting in non metal containers with chemical bright colors) and won't be heading back here. This is the best gelato I have eaten in Italy ... or pretty much anywhere. Florence has no shortage of tourist trap gelato stores, usually right along the main streets. Brightly colored sugary junk, not worth the calories or the money. You'll have to hike a bit away from the city center for this ... about 8-10 minutes away from the Duomo. It is worth the walk. Don't be scared off by the line. It's always 10 - 20 deep, but it moves fast. They serve Affogados (gelato in a cup of espresso) here, which the TikTok teens seem to love ... but we came for the gelato. Once you get inside, you'll approach the typical chaotic shit show of an ordering system. Total chaos, line cutters, no signs or direction and one cash register. Your mission is to get to the cash register, choose a cup or cone size and pay for it. Affogado and pastry to the right to wait ... gelato to the left to choose flavors. I don't believe sampling is involved but I could be wrong. It's only 3, 4.50 and 5 Euro ... we got the 5 Euro and allowed us 3 flavors, although we picked two. Rice ... This seems weird but trust me ... best flavor. It has slightly soggy yet crisp rice in it. There is a vanilla based flavor but it is complex and milky. The closest thing I can equate it to is grapenut flavoured ice cream in America. It was hands down my favorite flavor. Stratticella ... Vanilla ice cream but instead of chocolate chips, there are ribbons of hardened chocolate going through it. (Kind of like that ice cream dipped shell that hardens.) It's very good. Nothing special but much better than Venchi and some other places'. Amaretto ... Our least favourite. Instead of a nice, almond-y base, this just tastes like a slightly different version of vanilla. Wish I'd have skipped this one for a different flavour or a double up on the rice. Hazelnut ... Our second favourite. So good and creamy and flavourful. This was amazing. You can tell the taste is made by using real and fresh hazelnuts vs. artificial flavouring. Nutella ... Very good. Probably the flavour which was least distinguishable from the tourist shops but it was a favourite of my traveling partner, so we got it and she enjoyed it. Overall, this was the best gelato I've ever had. I found it on a list in a travel magazine and we only planned to go once and try another shop on our second day in Florence but came back here instead because we were convinced that we wouldn't find its equal. Don't let the line, or walk, put you off. This is a must-do stop in Florence if you are looking for a great gelato, dessert or treat. read more

Add this to the list of Artisanal gelato Places to try! Located in Firenze, this is a hidden gem. Vivoli is off the beaten path, and is another one of those places that is known to locals, and not necessarily frequented by tourist. This is how you know it's a great place! It's a rather large location that actually offers seating, which is not common for most gelato locations. All of the gelato is made in-house, and they have a fairly large kitchen where they truly make magic. The flavors that they offer are delicious. When you arrive, you immediately pay at the register, and they offer about five different sized cups with varying prices. We ordered the orange cream and amaretto in one cup, and the chocolate and orange cream in the 2nd cup. The amaretto was smooth and tasty, and married with the orange cream, was truly spectacular. The chocolate and orange was beyond delicious, and it was like having one of those holiday chocolates in the states that shaped like an orange that you break open, and it breaks into orange wedges. So, so simply delicious. We both found the staff at the gelato counter to not be overly friendly, but beyond that the gelato is absolutely worth the stop. Especially because it's hidden, or so it feels that way down a smaller street. The seating reminds me of one of those old fashion, ice cream parlors found in the states, where the seats are comfortable just long enough for you to enjoy your dessert, but not comfortable enough to make you want to sit there much longer than that. I will say, it was nice to be able to just sit and enjoy our desert, because that's not common in many of the dessert shops.
