There is a reason why VJs gets voted number one burger in town over and over again. I think a lot of that has to do with nostalgia and tradition more so than the actual quality of the food here HOWEVER it is worth noting that VJs is in the top three vendors of the classic Winnipeg greek burger. I don't think a real winner can be named when it comes to best Fat Boy or who makes the best Drive In burger BUT if you decide to try them all VJs should not be your first stop. I know this is a Winnipeg staple but I far prefer Dairi-Wip down the road. I have a huge gluten intolerance and wanted to badly to try their burgers without a bun. The lady working clearly has been there for years, if not probably the owner and was SO rude when I asked for this request. Obviously I didn't get it so I opted for fries and a shake. She didn't hear the shake part and didn't write anything down so all I had were fries. My husband said the rest of the food was sub-par and nothing to write home about. This place is an institution. Food has been the same for 40 plus years! Healthy helpings of homemade fries, the "Special" a Hamburger beyond compare. Hot Dogs with their homemade Chili sauce. The quality of the burgers has gone down significantly over the years, and the price has gone up. Just bought a cheeseburger, and it was burnt on the outside. They keep cooked burgers on the side, and throw them back on the grill when someone orders. They're not very friendly either. Only thing they know how to do is fries. Not going back. read more

The owners are very rude their tone was very demeaning to customers I asked for chilli on the side because I don't like a lot of chilli recipes so I like to try it before I put it all over my burger. The response I got from the wife was"no we don't do that it's either on or off". Glad to see another Winnipeg institution still standing and going strong. On this past rainy Sunday afternoon, my husband and I had a hankering for a little take out after running errands and mass produced chain fast food just wasn't going to cut it, so off we went to VJ's and were we ever glad we did. The place of course was just a humming with patrons ranging in age from late teens to early 60's all lined up for their long standing faves. My mouth was watering at the thought of their crisp golden french fries! It had been more than 10 years since I'd been here, so the anticipation was palpable. Thankfully, the fries lived up to what my taste buds remembered and, I am equally thankful for the fact that even in the midst of the afternoon rush, my order was correct, cheeseburger, not really in paradise, but with only mustard and relish...perfection! My husband's burger with the works was also all it was supposed to be, loaded with onions and chili and messy as all get up, but that's just what we were in the mood for and we got exactly what we wanted...and all for $15!! Had another VJs special with fries today, another great burger. VJs makes one of the best, if not the best burger in Winnipeg. They're consistently good and always the same. The burgers are 100% grade A beef and all of the toppings are as plentiful as they are flavourful. The patties are hand made and fresh. The fries are hand cut and deep fried while you wait. Great hangover food ! The food is rightly priced and the experience is good. The staff has an attitude which goes along with their overall positioning that ... Great walk up joint. The ingredients were all freshly prepared, we watched them making the patties as we ordered, no frozen hockey pucks here. We got two of the special deluxe burgers and a side of fries which was big enough to share. The burgers were amazing loaded with perfectly red ripe tomatoes and some delicious pickle slices. Out of all the burger joints in this city, this one is the worst for burgers. Burgers here are bland. I think the only reason people seem to like this place is because it's downtown and all the people who work downtown never get to go to a burger joint like this except for when they're at work, and the rest of the good burger places are all outside of the main downtown core. Probably the worst burger I've ever had. Got the Special, which was loaded down with chili and onions, and the bun was in no way strong enough to hold it together. Way overcooked, it had burnt crusty bits on the edges. The worst part was the salt overload. Supposedly there is some curry seasoning, but I couldn't really taste it through the salt.
