Oorlog sauce - mayo, peanut sauce, and chopped onions
    Lucy H.

I got a small fry with the "oorlog" sauce which is mayo, peanut sauce, and chopped onions. It is definitely a unique combination but it works on top of the very fresh, hot fries that have been cooked to perfection. They are constantly churning out fresh batches of fries and they are a perfect Amsterdam snack.

Vleminckx is a well know and well regarded Dutch frite shop. If you visit Amsterdam, you must get some frites. This spot is a bit off the main street, so it's quieter than other spots, but still usually has a small line. The frites are delicious. A small was enough for two of us as a small snack.

With liberty and fries for all!

Like most Americans, we love our fries! However, Belgian fries have truly mastered this beloved snack. The difference: American fries are typically cooked in vegetable oil, while Belgian fries are double-fried in animal fat, resulting in an extra crispy texture. Vleminckx Fries are served in a cone and topped with your desired sauces. I'm more of a dipper, so I requested my sauce on the side. This spot is more of a grab-and-go place rather than a sit-down restaurant--grab your cone and enjoy your snack on the go.

Literally every tourist says this fries place is the best. Let me tell you that I had a few others and I personally don't think it's worth the wait when there are a few around Amsterdam that are simply better. Yes, you'll save like €0.80 compared to other spots and the fries themselves aren't bad, just not worth the wait. They have tons of different sauces to try, everything from samurai to curry to just plain ketchup if you wanted. Overall, they aren't bad but not worth the hype.

The best fries I had in Amsterdam. So well made. Nice and crisp on the outside but soft and mushy on the inside. They had an endless list of sauces. My favorites were spicy ketchup and sambal. Fries come in three sizes. Large was enough to share between 3-4 people depending how nice you want to be. I ended up coming here multiple times during my stay.

the fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the sauces were delicious especially the spicy ketchup. we chose a combo of the spicy ketchup, belgian mayonnaise, and garlic sauce, which i didn't realize they would just put on top of the fries, but the combo was actually quite delicious together, just like the secret sauces many burger joints in the U.S. use.

Small Frites (~€3) with 2 Sauces (~€1.20): frites sauce & truffle mayo

Ordered: Small Frites (~€3) 2 Sauces (~€1.20): frites sauce & truffle mayo Aya's take: Would it really have been a trip to Amsterdam without Dutch Fries? I stopped by Vleminckx Fries for a quick snack and luckily, there was no wait. Dutch Fries are honestly phenomenal. They're crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, slightly tangy, and yet don't feel overly heavy or greasy. What makes this dense is the sauces. They put a heaping amount of sauce which I found a bit excessive but the frites sauce & truffle mayo were great for this type of fries. A quick, cheap snack - definitely swing by if you're in Amsterdam!

We came here in the rain, so there was no line. After we ordered, we went to the shopping center across the street to eat the fries. For the sauce, we went with mayonnaise- "the classic". We didn't grab the wooden forks, so we ended up with mayo on our hands. The fries were good- hot and thick. Even so, I wouldn't go out of my way for them.

    Amazing potato war fries

The line will move quick and the calories will too. These crisp fries have an unmatched natural potato taste. With a list of sauces longer than the Old Testament you may as well try 'em all if you have the time.

For super delicious french fries in a handheld cone while you're walking around and exploring wonderful Amsterdam, check out Vleminckx Fries. Do you want a small, medium, or large cone? After that decision, you must choose a sauce. If you're looking for the most popular one, it is mayo and you will see everyone ordering that. However, while I love mayo and it was tasty, honestly it wasn't mind-blowing and would rather have gotten a different sauce. Beware the line can get long so be prepared for a possible wait.

    Fries with cheese sauce

You see a lot of people lined up on the streets of Amsterdam, waiting for a cone of hot French fries with sauce. I think these are meant for the "normal" eaters in the world, and not the picky princesses like me. They offer dozens of interesting sauces for your fries: curry, satay, samurai, green pepper... But me? I just got cheese sauce! I think I was dropped on my head as a baby. The fries were pretty decent, but four stars, not five as I wished they came out piping hot and fresh. Still - worth a stop. A small cone is a good size for a snack.

Superlekker French fries near the Spui and Kalverstraat. I love fries but don't eat them too often. I was referred to this location by the guy who owns the pet store near my apartment. He said "it's the best" and his Uncle owns it too. Also, a couple of my Dutch neighbors tell me this is where they go for fries in Amsterdam. The best. The 29 + sauces are a daunting decision to make, but I had to go with the traditional mayonnaise (not like the mayo in the USA, it's sweeter...so good) but they have "American Mayonnaise" if you want that. These are usually not ready and made for you when you order. They cook them. They have to be "just right" I'm told. At first I thought they did this to allow people to queue out front and make these places look busier - and in demand - but it's all in how they make and prepare these potatoes. I got the klein (small) size - and couldn't finish them. They are so delicious. Omg, I may go get some right now after writing this1

And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

Service was busy (it's Handboogstraat, so what do you expect?), but the staff was super chill and kept the craft beers flowing. I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.
