I'm a bona fide case of a patient getting his original life back thanks to Dr. Sebag and his staff. I had PVD's in both eyes with--looking back on it honestly--very bad obstructive floaters. Another ophthalmologist told me to just learn to live with them and expressed skepticism at any mention of intervention, apparently a common stance in the profession. But the floaters were impossible to ignore. I couldn't concentrate working on a computer screen, I avoided daylight, and I was particularly anxious driving during daytime, especially city driving when my eyes had to shift left and right which caused the floaters to move around. Dr Chong has no bedside manner what so ever. Three different Dr's told me there is something wrong with my retina. He walks in and says "I'm dehydrated & I need to eat more fish." That is not what a Dr should say and being smug. I have a lot of health problems and he states exactly how many floaters I have. When I told him I don't know he demanded I give a number so I say -0 from there he tells me "they are your best friends for life." Really? It's hard enough going for me to go to a Dr for my health and he just brushed it off. I do drink water I could increase that, but I can't do fish at all. So he says I need to wear my glasses which in his words "aren't working." Then drink more water and eat more fish. What about all the other Drs who've said I "need help with my retina." So basically I have elder eyes and there's nothing he or anyone could do. I felt like a burden. He is not a kind or sympathetic. Then the rest of my day I felt like his words were cutting me. I wish I could give this a negative 5 or more. However I, like some of the other Drs believe there is hope and I trust the Lord my God to help fix me. read more

I lived with vitreous floaters in both eyes for four long years.  I went to several ophthalmologists at a large HMO who told me nothing could be done.  One even told me I should give the floaters names as if that would make my condition more warm & fuzzy.  I was absolutely disgusted to say the least.  I then went on a mission to find cures/treatment.  I have tried and still use many of the vision supplements and eye drops recommended. I also waded through much online ads/junk looking for doctors who treat floaters.  Unfortunately there are not many.  I finally found a doctor in the Bay Area who was willing to treat floaters.  He unfortunately would not do the vitrectomy unless I had already had cataract surgery so he treated me instead with YAG laser.  Sadly all the YAG laser did was break up my big floater (Weiss ring) into a bunch of even more annoying little floaters.  I was subsequently still very miserable.  During my earlier research for doctors who treat floaters, I had come across Dr. Sebag at VMR Institute in Huntington Beach.  His video on partial vitrectomys and floater removal success rate made a lasting impression.  I didn't go to him sooner because I had hoped to find a local doctor in the Bay Area. In March 2021 I was so miserable I decided I would call his office.  After emailing him directly he responded with knowledge and experience that made me feel there's hope even for a higher risk candidate like myself who has very high myopia. To make a long story short, over a period of a few months I had a floater partial vitrectomy performed in each eye.  His extremely kind and talented surgeon, Dr. Gui, performed both surgeries.  Both Dr. Sebag and Dr. Gui have improved my daily quality of life more than anyone can imagine!  The biggest mistake I made was waiting four years to get my quality of life back. I had my first vitrectomy in one eye back in 2019 for the floaters. The procedure was fast and painless. Recovery was simple (lots of rest, no strenuous activities for few weeks, etc.). One of the best life choices I have ever made and I would not have said it so easily had I not found Dr. Sebag. A compassionate doctor who understands what floaters sufferers have to endure. So far, that eye is doing very well. The vision is clear and I am grateful I had the option with Dr. Sebag. None of my local eye surgeons were willing to perform vitrectomy for "just floaters". "Live with it" they said. They're not the ones suffering. As expected, when one eye has floaters, the other eye usually will have floaters in about two years (I read that from somewhere) and knowing the floaters in my case were not going to go away on their own, I opted for the vitrectomy in that other eye as well. I came to the VMR 6 months ago with a retinal detachment that prevented any sight in my right eye. After meeting Dr Sebag, being checked out and viewing with one eye a video regarding a necessary surgery, he told me to come in the next day to meet my surgeon, Dr Guai. I am 73 and Dr Guai was handsome but to me seemed very young. I asked how many such surgeries had he done and we're any as bad as mine. He assured me he'd done 100's of them and even worse than mine. He did an excellent job and thanks to the Good Lord and Dr Guai I have my eyesight back. Today was my 6 month check up and everything looked great. I found Dr Guai to be not only competent as a surgeon but also caring and respectful of his patients fears and concerns. I suffered a horrible trip and fall and one of my injuries was a ripped retina. My opthamologist offered me grim hope that I'd be able to see out of my right eye again and rushed me to VMR Institute calling ahead and requesting an immediate consultation by Dr. Gui. The staff was fabulous welcoming comforting assuring me that everything would be fine and explaining every test they were doing. Dr. Gui has an excellent consultative and comforting approach explaining everything that would need to be done, possible alternatives and outcomes. The schedule was immediately opened up for my emergency surgery. The two weeks following OPP I received regular follow-up calls from his staff and personal calls from the doctor checking I was okay and following my post surgery instructions. His in-depth education, experience and mentoring certainly is reflected in his skill. It is now over 6 months post surgery and I see great out of my right eye. I am ever so grateful. On January 27, 2021, I had Dr Gui perform eye surgery to remove a membrane on my macular. I had noticed problems with my vision in my left eye. Dr Gui examined my eye and found that I had a membrane covering my macular which was the cause of my vision distortion. Within a week, he performed surgery at the Newport Bay Surgery Center. The surgery was easy and quick and totally cleared the floaters in that eye. My right eye was done about 4 months ago and have now scheduled to have my left eye done. I went in for eye exam. I had the first appointment of the day, but it took be nearly all day. Sebag is a bit older than his picture makes him seem and it seems like his vision has become so bad that he is no longer able to look inside your eye himself without the help of some electronic camera system. His technicians seem very untrained. The first thing they were supposed to do was to put eye drops in my eyes to dialate my pupils, but his first technician failed to do that properly and this ruined everything later on because my pupils weren't dialated. The biggest issue I had with VMR institute was that they charged me $100 for watching a 5 minute video that you can find on youtube and this charge was not even covered by my insurance. The video was an educational video on a chemical that lights up the veins in your eye. They charged it as "counciling" or something dumb like that. read more

Dr. Chong is a great doctor.. however his back office staff.. Claudia and Julie the worst, they billed me again for a bill that I payed and cleared my bank account back on 3/26/2021. When I called them on 4/19/2021 Claudia said she would look into it and needed to talk to her manager Julie because Julie is the one that does checks and that I would get a call back. Nope never got a call back. So I called again on 4/19/2021 and spoke to Claudia again and she said her manager Julie would look into it and call me back tomorrow 4/20/2021 and again no call back, so I called them and per Claudia oh yea we found your check and credited your account. Horrible service. It already Cleared my bank account what else do they want for proof ?! I will not be returning to this office. read more

I've known Dr. Sebag and VMR institute for a long time because Dr. Sebag performed several surgeries for my both eyes to clear floaters. I had serious complication after cataract surgery performed by another ophthalmologist early this year. Eye pressure elevated so high due to complication. I thought I was going to go blind and the pain was so unbearable at night. I was really scared. I was admitted to surgery center immediately right next day after my eye was evaluated and diagnosed. My Grandfather had a retina detachment and was referred to VMR. Dr. Gui performed the surgery with the utmost care and was able to reattached the retina. Dr. Gui really impressed us with his professionalism and work ethics. He even called to check up on my Grandpa post operation. Fast forward to 3 months later, Dr. Gui performed another surgery to remove the oil from my Grandpa's eye. Remarkable. The disturbing floaters are finally gone. I am a 59 year-old physician who developed large brown cloud-like floaters about 8 years ago. Over the years I tried to ignore them and just lived with compromised vision. I also tried several YAG laser treatments that did not really help. My lifestyle slowly changed. I stopped certain activities because my floaters did not allow me to see well. I was frustrated while reading and looking at a computer screen. The floaters were obstructing my vision. For many years I put up with a glob of floaters in one eye that constantly distorted my vision. Most eye doctors tell you there isn't anything you can do about them and so I resigned myself to deal with them. I was referred to Dr. Sebag for a follow-up after a torn retina and he didn't dismiss my complaints about the floaters, which I really appreciated. They did an ultrasound and the glob was actually visible on the ultrasound. He informed me that he could do "vitrectomy surgery" to remove them. After having already had cataract surgery at a young age and surgery for a torn retina, it took me a few years to get up the nerve to have the vitrectomy surgery but I finally did it in 2016. I should have done it years ago because my vision is significantly better! Dr. Sebag's office conducted contrast sensitivity tests before and after the surgery and the improvement actually surprised me. I knew my vision was impaired but the contrast sensitivity tests proved how impacted it really was. A month after the surgery my contrast sensitivity was three times better! The surgery is an out-patient procedure and only takes around 15 minutes. (However, there is a lot of waiting around and prep time.) Per his instructions I took a week off from work. I just want to tell everyone how amazing Dr Sebag and his team are. When I first went to the VMR Institute I could not see at all. I had bled into both eyes and could not see for a month before I went there . In as little a month Dr. Sebag gave me full vision back in my left eye. My right eye was a little worse but still it only took about a month and a half two months and I have full vision back. Words can not express how grateful i am to had meet such a great doctor. He is so good at what he does. Made me feel comfortable safe and less scared, (believe me i was so scared). The staff is wonderful. Dr. Sebog, however, is not. He doesn't treat his employees with respect or dignity. He reprimands them without no filter in front of patients. I'm not impressed with all his eduction posted all the office if he can not treat his staff properly. Do not trust this arrogant and rude doctor at all. I've struggled with bad eye floaters for over 10 years as a side effect of cataract surgery. Most ophthalmologists didn't consider it a serious enough issue to even discuss beyond telling me I would just have to live with it. After a decade of having a very difficult time reading, using the computer and playing sports, I finally found a physician who understood that floaters were a condition that was worthy of attention. In November (and December) I had a limited vitrectomy on each eye and my problem is completely gone. The surgery took about 10 minutes and was painless. I wish I would have done this 10 years ago. Dr. Sebag at the VMR Institute in Huntington Beach gave me back my life. He is definitely a leader in his field. I have been suffering with floaters in both eyes for almost 7 years. I am otherwise a very healthy 69 year old woman that is very active and have no other medical conditions, but these dense floaters were negatively affecting my quality of life in every aspect. I did my research all these years. I first tried the Yag laser quite a few times, but unfortunately in my case it was not helpful to reduce my severe floaters. I was prepared to travel anywhere in the US, and I did, to find a retinologist that was not only sympathetic to this vitreous floater condition, but one who was also very expert and knowledgeable, and had performed many of these successful vitrectomies for floaters only.I was very thankful when we found out about Dr. Sebag. He has written a large textbook on the Vitreous and Retina, and he is an amazing clinician documenting every aspect of his research and the procedures with his patients. I had my first vitrectomy in Oct. 2016, and the next one in Feb. 2017. His assistants were terrific, and Dr. Sebag is very expert. He is such a qualified doctor and takes his profession very seriously. The surgery center was great and my eye patch was only on overnight. The surgery lasted no more than 20 minutes, with no discomfort. I was able to eat at my favorite restaurant immediately afterwards. Dr. Sebag is currently presenting his research and documenting his surgeries to retinologists and opthamalogists all over the country, so hopefully sooner than later, more physicians in this field will come to understand that floaters can impact the quality of life as adversely as cataracts or macular degeneration in many cases. Patients need to be heard, validated, and treated . It takes much time to change the mindset of doctors and we desperately need more physicians like Dr. Sebag to be on the forefront of this important shift in treating vitreous floaters. I am looking at this white screen and for the first time in many years I am not seeing a bunch of squiggly lines, webs, or black dots. That's because I was at VMR Institute 2 days ago and Dr. Jerry Sebag performed a Floaterectomy on my left eye. It is now completely free of floaters. And I had absolutely no pain nor discomfort.
