As soon as we arrived I was already disappointed as they had a large sign on the door that it was cash or check only, they had no internet service. Walked into the dining room and thought I'd traveled into a time warp, it truly is like being in the 60s; dim lighting, plastic table cloths. One waitress to service the dining room and the bar. Both ordered tenderloin, mine was ok but nothing fabulous, wife's was mediocre at best. Salad bar was fine but the chicken noodle soup was more like b vegetable soup with lots of peas and carrots. Great food and Old Fashioned drinks done with perfection. The staff is fabulous and so helpful. Salad bar was nice! Three bean salad and sweet 'n sour cuke salad were excellent. Best hash browns I've had in a long time - get them crispy. Flatware was stainless steel from the bottom of the Cisco offerings, I would describe it as better than plastic, but would have preferred to see it shine. Ambiance is tired, clean, but dated. The service area is a bit cluttered. I had an 8-oz rib eye, it was flavorful and done as I requested, medium, but it was the toughest rib eye I have ever had. The hot German potato salad seemed to have all of the right ingredients, but remained mediocre. I would have preferred a dinner roll over the white toast served with the meal. Found this place for my Son's birthday dinner. Walked in and I loved the entire bar! Was seated at a table for 3. We all went over the menu and decided on steaks and seafood. The salad bar is the coolest MCM style fixture. Nice salads on there, everything was fresh and really great. Lots of home made pasta and veggie salads. Our soups were spectacular and hot hot! My son and I dined at Voelker's last night, and everything was awesome! I had a ribeye steak, and it was the best-tasting steak I have had in years! It was also tender too! The service was awesome and the ambiance was just what I needed. My son said his food was great too! Our waitress was amazing and very attentive as well! Voelkers is the best steak house in Dodge County, Went there on a Thursday night very busy. I had the tenderloin and shrimp combo. My steak cooked to perfection. Then the most outstanding shrimp I have ever had. It has this taste that makes you to want more. Oh almost forgot the best part. The salad bar. It's small but delicious salads all homemade. Plus spreadable cheese, cookies, veggies, just about anything you want. If you haven't been to Voelkers go there. You won't regret it. read more

You'll be transported back in time. Voelkers hasn't changed in 50 years. It's a bar that has a dining room - like a supper club-lite. Each friday, the bar is loaded with locals from Beaver Dam as a celebration that the week is done. Friday fish fry is pretty good. They even do half portions for the lighter eaters. Been coming to Voelker's since the 90s and absolutely adore this place. It definitely is not a brand new supper club if that's what anyone is expecting, probably go elsewhere. They have the best old fashion's and the food is beyond reasonably priced. It's great for a smaller group and the atmosphere of the small bar is cozy and warm. The salad bar has been my favorite since I was little and it's still an old school masterpiece. Love the pasta and fried cod. What can I say but this was probably a fantastic place on the 50s,60s and 70s. Decor probably has never changed in the last 40-50 yrs but the good thing is, eventually retro will be in style again eventually. The family tries hard but a lot of things are working against them besides time. 1) no tap beer just bottles 2) they use a microwave a lot to heat food 3) dont think they change the grease in the fryer often if ever. 4) old hard chairs in dining area. 5) street parking only for this restaurant located in a neighborhood 6) service slow, lucky for us it wasn't busy. Pros: Prices are low Food quantity is decent size even if food quality is only average. Folks are friendly here, but they have a regular dining crowd here. Youll get a stare or two if your not in the clique. I had the shaved prime rib and some onion rings for dinner and my stomach was killing me the rest of the night. And you'll think, must be great fish!? Then it gets a little confusing.... You need to check in with the bar bartender to get seats (eventually) So, you sit and wait at the bar. While you're waiting I recommend the Brandy old Fashioned sweet, probably the best thing we had there. After that they'll eventually come to you and take your order. But you don't get seated yet. So you have to order another drink.. Or two.. Or three.. It took forever getting seated not sure if it was because the old people eat slowly and talk forever. Then finally you get seated and your food is already there. Which i wasnt a big fan of. When I looked at it my initail thought was outta a bag kinda fish. I ordered the perch and my husband ordered pike. Thank god we didn't order a salad bar for 2.50 not much for a salad bar and cheap looking lettuce. The fish was definitely not fresh, frozen, and pretty much all tasted the same. Everything was like straight outta the freezer. I had freezer potato pancakes, gross! My husband had fries not that great either. The coslaw was the best thing. This place I wouldn't recommend unless your super old, and want a weekly social hours with your old friends. Or if you like frozen fish that was worse than Gordmans. I was kinda watching them make food from my seat and they used a microwave quite often. For what? Never mind... I don't wanna know. This place looks like a dive. Once I got in there, I noticed that there were 2 tables open but yet I had yet to be seated. Once I was seated ( I waited about 10-15 minutes) I saw a salad bar, and after I had ordered (which took forever) I went to the salad bar and took a few observations, the lettuce was wilty and it smelled horrible over by the salad bar and I didn't know what it was, and I was never able to figure it out. When I ordered a burger I noticed when it came out that it was so extremely hot, I could not eat it for 20 minutes. I also tasted that the lettuce was wilted and that was not pleasant. After I finished my food they asked for desert so I got some I got a slice of chocolate cake and that cake was so undercooked that I thought it had never been cooked. Four of us went to dinner on Friday night. Three ordered the tenderloin and one the shrimp. Three included the salad bar with their meal. Everyone's food was good, the salad bar had alot of selections, the steaks were pefectly done according to our desires. The waitress was friendly and provided excellent service. We have never been to Beaver Dam and my wife wanted a steak dinner. After reading some review, we decided to try Voelkers. We opened the door and stepped back in time...which was fine by us. The bar was mostly packed, so we moved towards the dining entrance. Nobody greeted us or even looked our way. We looked around to see any sort of signs whether to seat yourself or just wait...nothing. The bartender was very busy, so we seated ourselves. Waited 20 minutes at a table with no acknowledgment. Decided to walk out and was finally met by someone who said it's by reservation only and we could sit at the bar for 45 minutes for a table. The bar was full....so we left. Would never go back. Could be good or great...but will never know. Not a big deal, but a simple sign could have done wonders lol. read more

I ordered a Porterhouse Steak medium rare and received a done steak. They took back and then stated they didn't have any more thawed out to make one meduim rare for me but could make a Ribye steak. I don't know what type of steak it was but it dure wasn't a Ribeye. It had no flavor and to hard to chew. It was shaped like a New York strip. The first thought I had when seeing the name Voelker's show up as a restaurant in Beaver Dam during a Google search was "Where the heck is that?". My husband and I drove by the address to see where it was and it was closed, as we've since learned they are only open for dinner. I'm not surprised that I'd never noticed it, the place seems really easy to miss. Because I like trying places I haven't been to yet, we decided to go on a Saturday evening. At first sight of the interior of the restaurant, it looked VERY dated, and for me personally didn't look very appealing. You can't judge a book by its cover though because the food was fantastic! The salad bar that's included with the meal was just okay, but for being so small there was a decent variety of options. The soup of the day was a cauliflower dill soup and I really enjoyed it, good flavor and the dill was very subtle. Overall, a very nice soup. For my entrée I ordered a rib eye steak and fried shrimp, cooked rare. My husband ordered the prime rib; I believe he opted for medium-rare. Both dishes were wonderful. My steak was juicy and cooked perfectly. The shrimp had a really nice, light batter and were seasoned well. My husband really liked his prime rib, though instead of eating it with the au jus, he used A1...he really likes his A1. All in all, the experience was very satisfying and we would gladly go back and try the Friday fish fry as it seems to be very popular. read more

Despite living just a block away for about 5 years I've only been here for dinner once. That was a while back and I'm just now getting around to reviewing my experience. First, it feels like stepping back in time to 1960 when you enter, and I don't necessarily mean that as a compliment. I typically like that sort of old school Wisconsin supper club vibe but this place is more dingy than nostalgic. I'm not sure if most folks get reservations (not sure if they take them) but we showed up without one on a Saturday night and had a very long wait at the bar. The bar area seemed much nicer than the dining room area, although that might be due to the dimmer lighting at the bar. They offer a salad bar, which was pretty sparse on my visit but to be fair I'm not a big fan of the whole salad bar concept anyway (I don't like seeing a bunch of strangers digging around in food I'm about to eat). Of course I had the steak, gotta go with what a place is known for, right? The steak was actually pretty good and was the best part of the night. Since I wasn't a fan of the salad bar I was hoping I would get a vegetable with my meal but I didn't. This place definitely caters to a much, much older crowd. If you are looking for a place to celebrate your gramps 80th birthday, this might be the place for you. While this might not be my fave locale I do have a lot of respect for a local place that's been able to make a go of it this long. They must be doing something right! read more

I can't say enough good about this place! Every time you go, it's a diffrent experience. The people that come here and staff are so friendly, like a gentleman said, this is truly the "Cheers" of Beaver Dam. It is a treasure, that I wish more of the younger generation will try. The food is delicious, the drinks are fantastic, and the atmosphere is great! Not too many places you can go now days were the bar bill is more then your food bill. On Friday and Saturday night, be prepared to wait for a table in the dining room. It's ok though, the bar will keep you happy until then. read more
