Brand new climbing walls that move any direction
    Connor E.

This place is pretty new and it's a great place to climb. They are adding three new climbing walls that will be able to move any direction for different types of difficulty. Highly recommend this place for new and skilled climbers.

My favorite climbing gym on the island. If you Boulder and want to get strong this is the best gym. They are the only gym on the island with boards such as moonboard and kilter board. You can easily find out what grade you really climb here. The owners are the strongest climbers on the island but best of all are super down to earth and will help you on your climbing journey.

Hidden gem in Kailua. The staff was amazing, super friendly and helpful. This was our first time rock climbing, and we had such a great family night. Can't wait to go back !!!

Had a great time with my 10 and 8 year old girls. Friendly staff and climbers helped us figure out this sport for first time. Will be back!

Ask the Community - Volcanic Rock Gym

How busy/crowded do you usually get?

We do get busy but never overwhelmingly so. There’s always room to climb! Our busiest times are in the mornings and evenings.

Are there auto belays for top rope climbing at this gym?

Hi Lily! We do not have auto belays or rope climbing at our gym. Our Kilter board does offer routes to train for rope climbing and endurance though!

Even though we have done this excursion many times, there's always a twist. On our latest adventure, we got to see five monk seals, with two of them playing in the ocean like little puppies. We had a good group and had time to do extra things on this trip. Our guide, Tupre, made it a fun and interesting tour, throwing in historical and additional wildlife information. This experience solidified our decision to book Kailua Beach Adventures on our next trip to Oahu.

The trip to the island took us approximately 1.5 hours maybe a bit more to Kayak the 2.3 miles due to strong head winds. It was faster on the return trip. We even had time to stop on flat island. This is one of my favorite activities to do while on Oahu. I love the scenic views heading to the "Mokes" and I love the views looking toward Oahu while out on the water. It's such a magical kayaking adventure. The island is a bird sanctuary and if you go at the right time you'll see nesting birds and if you are lucky, you'll see the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. We saw three (maybe four, not sure if one was the same one that swam to a different spot) on Moku Nui and one on Popoi'a Island sandbar. If you are adventurous and have the stamina and strength to kayak, I highly recommend this tour for you! Our guide Two-pre was the best!!! He told us that the tour we were on was his 400th!!

Only reason I found it was because the park employee told me to just hop the little stone fence lol. Located right next to the portapotties. This isn't a stroll or just a long hike. It's difficult due to the potential weather conditions and the steep climb. There are ropes in portions, and if that's not your thing I don't recommend it. Not for kids or elderly in my opinion. You have to be relatively fit with decent knees. Don't wear flip flops. Bring water. Take your time and focus otherwise you can easily fall to your death or twist an ankle. That all being said, I was able to make it to the pali puka point as a relatively fit 4 month pregnant individual lol. Maybe wasn't the wisest decision but worth the views lol. Be very cautious if you're planning on doing this hike. Check weather conditions, the mud makes it easy to slip. Check wind conditions as there are some life threatening falls along the way. Bring proper shoes, I recommend pants and not shorts, just for potential bugs/brushes. Definitely hike and seek adventure, just don't be an idiot or an uninformed tourist about it. This hike HAS killed locals in the past before, Google it.

Who should do it: most people can make the 1st peak. Trail from 1st to 2nd becomes noticeably narrower but it's short and about the same level of difficulty as trail up the 1st peak. 2nd to 3rd peak was where the challenge is - lots of vertical rock climbing, path is narrow, and ropes aren't all in good conditions. If you don't have good upper body strength, have knee problems, or are afraid of heights, it's not a good idea to do the 3rd peak. If you don't have good endurance, it's just going to be a long day. Words of caution: try avoid going after a rainy day because the trail becomes very muddy. It started raining when I was coming down from the 3rd peak and the ground became slippery. Better to go with a friend if you can - there are only a few people hiking past the 2nd peak and in case you get injured, it's good to have someone with you to help. Preparation: pack enough water, gloves (protect your hands from climbing), long pants, and a light windbreaker (waterproof is ideal). You never know how the microclimate changes in the mountain. Throw on some hiking shoes too if you have them. You can get away with gym shoes as I did but extra grip comes in handy on a muddy day. Views: view is the best from the 1st peak. Past that is more for the adrenalin and experience. Parking: no official parking lot for the hike, park across the bridge on the side of the roads. It's a ~15 minute walk to the trailhead. Have fun out there!

We started out around 8:45 AM and by the time we reached the waterfall, it was getting full of families and pairs of hikers. I recommend go early to skip the crowds. Here are clear and concise directions for this hike!!…read more Main parking off Pali hwy. Entrance is easily visible. You'll enter the bamboo forest. Within the first 50 feet it will split into a Y trail, take the left path. If you go straight you'll likely end up in the bamboo section for 20-40 mins. If you do not exit the bamboo area within 10 mins, you're lost. You'll exit the bamboo area through a lifted/broken section of the fence. Walk uphill onto the paved pathway. This will open onto a wide valley. You'll pass a large bridge structure. Follow that till road till you get to the supply shed structures. Look for a small concrete stairway in the trees. Stay left mostly, and look for pink ribbons. Pass the old fenced off pool looking area. Once you hit the rock/mud path (approx 10 mins) there's a hard right turn down into the main river area. A large tree has fallen so you'll need to spot the ribbons, and climb over this tree. If you pass this fallen tree by mistake, the trail will seem oddly difficult and dense. You'll need to turn around. Walk until you see the man made rock wall with a small waterfall, and walk across this to the other side. Follow the ribbons up the path and you'll need to cross the river 3-5 more times after this. Keep looking for clear open paths. There's two ways you can continue after that point so don't worry. (One way is just more difficult) Before the waterfall there's a larger section of rocks you'll have to climb over. Main takeaways: You will have to walk across slippery rocks several times. It is muddy. It's not that difficult but can be dangerous at some parts. If you don't see a pink/orange ribbon for more than 5-10 mins at any time, you are likely lost.

It was only about 15 minutes to the first pillbox already with good views but if you walk another 5 minutes you'll reach the second pillbox. The views of the ocean were beautiful and you can see the coastline far and wide. You can continue going past the pillboxes but most people get to the stop and go back down. Going down was a little slippery so watch your step, be careful, and ensure you're staying on the trail going down. This was a short and slightly strenuous hike but fulfilling.

The check-in desk can get a little crazy during peak times, since it's run by students and everything is new, but I'm sure with time it'll run a lot smoother. This rec center has it all - indoor track (walk/run counter clockwise or get scolding like how I did), cardio machines, free weights, weight machines, group exercise rooms, and an open basketball/volleyball court. Group fitness classes are available for free for students and faculty/staff with memberships: spin, powerplates, boxmaster, TRX, circuit training, and more. There are day use lockers both outside of the locker rooms (you do not need a lock to use these) and a few inside the locker room (you need to bring a lock to use these). You can also rent a locker for $75 per year. I'm surprised at how small the locker rooms are, and how few lockers there are. UH is hovering at 55,000 student enrollment plus over 14,000 employees. That's a lot of potential users of this facility, and while not everyone will use the facility or its showers/lockers, I think based on those numbers alone, they should have put in more lockers. The fact that they have already sold out of lockers on the Mens' side proves my point. Towel and laundry service are available for an additional fee. The price you pay depends on your classification. For UH Manoa students, it's free. Faculty/staff, UH Foundation employees and RCUH employees pay $240 per year. There are also daily, weekly, monthly, and 6 month rates. I believe UH alumni who graduated 2008 or later are also eligible to purchase memberships at $300 per year, since they had to pay the Campus Center Operations and Rec fee. But I guess if you attended UH during those years and paid the fee, but didn't graduate, you don't qualify. Although I now have to pay to use the gym (before we got to use the old fitness center on lower campus for free), it's ok, because I'm sure this gym needs the revenue for upkeep and maintenance costs. Generally speaking, government always builds new buildings, but they always have a hard time maintaining them. Now if only their fitness center for their D1 Collegiate athletes could be this good.
