It was a chilly, misty afternoon. FPO and I were in the area of Volcano's National Park and saw on Yelp that there was a winery nearby so we decided to check it out. It's a nice little spot, easy to find with GPS. The people are friendly, the wines are a little sweet for my taste but the ambiance is very laid back and welcoming. Volcano Winery ended up being a really fun stop for us, even though we rolled in on a rainy afternoon pretty close to closing time. Sometimes that can feel rushed or like you're inconveniencing staff, but that definitely wasn't the case here. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and generous with their pours. We opted for the tasting flight, which included six wines. Each one felt unique and thoughtfully crafted. Nothing tasted overly commercial or predictable. One of the reds in particular reminded me a lot of sangria, fruit-forward with a slightly spiced finish that made it really easy to sip. It was unexpected in a good way. The staff took time to explain what we were trying without making it feel like a lecture, and the overall vibe stayed relaxed despite the weather and the late hour. We ended up bringing a bottle of the Volcano White home with us, which felt like the perfect souvenir from the visit. The cutest little wine shop and a great pit stop when visiting Volcanoes National Park. A quick search of nearby places while in volcano bay park landed us here. There was plenty of parking out front but they were definitely busy. We opted to share a flight which was a nice option. The wines are definitely on the sweeter side but are unique. With each pour, they explained the flavor profile and gave a quick history of the making behind them. We were a little too full or we would have ordered the charcuterie board as well. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. read more

We finished hiking VNP around noon which is also when this winery opened so it was perfect timing. I would say the wines here are not your normal wine but more fruit forward with a local influence. They let us share a flight between the 2 of us which was perfect. We enjoyed the first 4 wines and even bought a bottle of the Volcano Red which tastes like a sangria to take home. The Muscat dry was our second favorite. The Macadamia Nut Honey is more of a mead which was my least favorite and the Infusion tea tasted very bitter. Staff are super nice. read more

We spent the morning at the volcano and couldn't resist stopping by for a tasting of wine and tea. First, the white tea was refreshing, light and cool. Since it's not very processed the light floral notes really came through. Then the black tea was warm and comforting. We really enjoyed both, I was so delighted they also had this available. The wine was equally as good, they explained each wine as they poured it and we enjoyed it with a nice charcuterie board. This place was a worthwhile stop during our traverse to Volcanoes National Park. Located not far from the Park, it was easy to incorporate into our itinerary. Their tasting room was simple but featured a nicely arranged and nicely kept area with standing high tables. There were some outside pavilions with tables available as well. Tastings were on a walk-in basis only. We came in toward the end of the day and, hence, it was not too busy. There were a few set tasting regimens available. My wife and I split a tasting and were favorably impressed. Our friendly server added to the pleasant experience. They also had some customizable small charcuterie boards available that allowed us to have a snack with our wine. Overall, this was a nice stop to complement our activities on the Big Island and it satisfied that occasional wine craving that we get. read more

We saw the sign for volcano winery after finishing a long hike in the national park. The reviews on Yelp worried us a bit and made it unclear whether the winery would be worth a stop. However, we are happy we took the risk and went in for a tasting. The wines were definitely not from France or Italy, but I actually thought they were pretty good and it was a fun experience to enjoy a tasting with ~ unique wines and a custom charcuterie board after a long hike. This was a fun place to stop by to say we've been to the most southern winery in the US. It was also a great break from the heat in the middle of our Volcano day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The winery itself has a small indoor area with some standing tables but then a lot of out door seating which is perfect given the lovely Hawaiian weather. The wine itself was unfortunately not that great. It is VERY sweet, so if you love sweet wines, then this is the place for you! The only flight tasting they offer is to try all 7 wines, 1oz pour, which normally I would love but given we had to drive back to Hilo and also had more hiking to do, I wish they would offer a smaller flight. I've been here several times before and every visit has been 5 stars! The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Have brought different friends and family over the years and they are always thankful that I brought them here. Very casual and informal, and just good vibes. Choice of snack platters go well with the wine flights. Wine tasting is well worth the $20 price. 6 wines that are very different from fruit blends to tea infused, even macadamia nut honey. This place does not disappoint and I love supporting local! I always walk away with ordering a couple of bottles to ship home. The service was friendly but unfortunately the wine at Volcano Winery was just not good. We stopped by after visiting the park, like most other guests, to share a bottle of wine. The staff were nice enough to offer us a few "splashes" of wine rather than doing a full tasting to select our bottle. We tried the honey macadamia nut wine, which is actually not even a wine made from grapes, more similar to a mead. It had an interesting taste but very sweet. The muscat dry white was the bottle that we ended up selecting which was the least sweet and most dry of their selections. It was fine but nothing memorable. My sister and her boyfriend also ordered one of the cheese spreads which was similar to a cream cheese spread, served with pretzels and Ritz crackers. They were not overly impressed. The winery does have a nice set up with standing tasting counters inside and an outdoor patio with plenty of tables and a handful of outdoor fire pits. Bottles can be purchased to take home from the tasting room as well. Overall, no regrets on the stop but I am not sure that I would recommend it. read more

Had the most amazing wine.... macadamia nut honey wine. If I could make a wine that I would enjoy, this would be it!! We got here 20 minutes before closing time after spending the day at Volcanoes National Park. This place has boutique wines and cookies and fruit butters and tea made from camellia plants. They even have a black tea infused honeybee that I also really enjoyed. My husband and I shared a 375 ml bottle of the honey wine and ended our day on a happy note! The local red headed pheasants and nene were cavorting amongst the vines out front when we departed for our hotel in Hilo. Loved this place... especially the cool workers. Haha they were welcoming from the start and even gave us a few laughs during our tasting. My friends and I got the "Classic Wine Tasting" which was $20/person. Not too bad for getting to try 6-7 wines! Our favorite hands down was the Infusion Tea Wine. I was shocked how much this tasted JUST like tea. I think as someone who is a novice wine drinker, this surprised me. Other than this, I really liked the Volcano Blush. I would definitely purchase both, but I can see why the Tea Wine was $42 for half the normal size bottle. I recommend checking this place out! Good experience read more

We only went here because it was 5 minutes away for Volcano park . We were Thirsty for wine lol Wines were not that great ! $20 pp per tasting . We shared because we had to drive back to Kona . Place is pretty small , they were pretty busy , staff was nice however. We also got crackers and dip that was on the menu for like $15 I think Ritz crackers, pretzel sticks and dip . Very generic and nothing special about it . My sister in law did by 2 bottles of wine , mainly to take back home . They don't even waive the tasting fee with bottle purchase which is a bummer . $100 plus later , this is a one and done but with the visit . Nothing spectacular:) read more

Definitely a place you want to stop, if you like trying really interesting wines. Sadly, I was hoping with their location and name, that it meant I'd get to try a wine with a uniquely Hawaiian terroir, but as of when we visited last month, all the wines in their tasting were still made from imported grapes from California (as a Californian, that's much less interesting). But, while that would have been fun, the real highlight is that one of their wines also uses local guava, and two include local jaboticaba berries, a fruit I'd never heard of, but which clearly makes great wine as well. Their "blush" was a particular standout in my opinion (it's actually a mixture of 70% Symphony, one of my favorite white wine grapes, and 30% jaboticaba, which gives it the color of a blush - I had to buy a bottle), but the red blend (cab, carignan, alicante and 15% jaboticaba berry) was also solid. The tasting also included 2 meads made with local honey - not, as I had originally understood, macadamia nut *flavored* mead, rather, mead made from honey that came from macadamia nut trees. One unflavored, the other flavored with their own black tea, both also excellent. We bought a bottle of their semi-sweet mead, as well - though I will note, I might not have if I'd known we were going to discover another meadery just outside Hilo a few hours later (Big Island Meadery) selling 750ml bottles of their roughly equally good semi-sweet mead, also made with local honey, for about the same price as Volcano's 375ml bottles. Still - great mead. The tasting is a bit pricey at $20, and sadly, they do *not* have any sort of tasting comp for buying bottles, but then, we still bought two bottles, so I guess they know what they're doing! Finally, to answer one question I couldn't find a solid answer to in advance, in case anyone else has it: you can't bring outside food into the tasting room itself, but you can absolutely eat it outside, where they have a large tented area set up for guests' use - and it is even properly tented against rain, I can vouch from personal experience. You just have to go back in to get each taster, a very small inconvenience. read more

OMG! First time visit here and LOVE this place! On the family trip, we stopped by here. Easy to find this place. Very quiet and comfortable place. When we got in they welcomed us. My mother-in-law, aunty and uncle stayed outside and me, my husband and his cousin decided to try " Classic Wine Tasting" which is only $18 per person. And also aunty joined "Estate Tea Tasting" ($6). All staff are very friendly and each glasses, staff changed and explained very detail also we had fun conversation with them. We did enjoy each glasses of tasting! So, after all glasses empty, they told us "Volcano Winery Club" that is no membership fee and just buy 3bottles of wine per each quarter. I and my husband's cousin immediately sign up and got three bottles. Why not!? Because of volcanic soil, they don't make all made in Hawaii(volcano) wine yet. Almost their wine made of imported grape juice from CA. (Hope my memory is correct) Slowly expand their vineyard and they can make only limit amount of 100% volcano estate wine. But in January they are going to release 100% Volcano Estate grape wine and Volcano Winery Club member can get to offer first. Can't wait that!!! A wonderful winery combing traditional grapes and new tastes. In a beautiful and remote setting our group enjoyed several tastes with the sommelier guiding us through grapes, berries, flavors, alcohol content (all 12%) and notes of tea, berry, fruit, floral and honey. We talked about pairings and who loves this wine most with what occasion... great fun and so many wines with personality! Our hosts were great fun and added so much more information on harvests, history, tea picking and the fun and work of making wine and winning prize ribbons! Go for the experience, not the wine. Many of my friends will not visit the Volcano Winery because these wines are not up to caliber on my friend's requirements; such as aged cabs and deep complex reds. Most of wines here are sweet and fruity. There was even a wine here that tasted like curry, and it was novel, but not for serious wine aficionados. We used to belong to a wine home-brew club and many of the wines tasted like the ones at the Volcano Winery. We didn't make any reservations as we just came for the tasting and to shop in the gift shop, but if you want the tour of the winery, you will have to make advance reservations for an additional fee. When you walk in, there's no sign directing you to any tastings or what to do; you go in and walk up to someone and ask them about it. The woman we had giving us the tasting would occasionally disappear for a while and we just stood around between tastings wondering where she went or what we needed to do, go up to the counter? She would show up at the counter that I walked up to and said she would be right with us, so that was good, otherwise I had no idea what to expect. It wasn't very busy but maybe she had to do other things in the back, but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time and not left hanging. Tastings were $18.00 for small pours of 1-oz each of 6 wines in a cute glass, from driest to sweetest. My husband wasn't a big fan of any of the wines, but I bought a small bottle of the Mac Nut Honey Wine for $25.00 and the tiny tasting wine glass with their logo for $13.00. Although they didn't make you feel obligated to buy anything, I felt I needed to support a local business, so I bought the wine, the glass and a few things from the gift shop. I was excited about the tea-wine infusion, but the bottle was $42.00 and the tea-wine infusion wasn't what I imagined. I am inspired to make my own tea-wine infusion after tasting theirs and I'm planning on infusing some white wine with Emma's Vanilla Blossoms tea blend with flowers/citrus and vanilla that I purchased at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company in Paauilo (see my review). At the end when you pay, you're expected to leave a tip for the wine tasting. I'm used to the old-school way of tipping at wineries in California and Washington for exemplary service, not just tipping just to tip, but I get this is Hawaii and gas is almost $5 a gallon. RETURN FACTOR - it was worth a trip out here to put on my trip-belt notch, but probably would not come back in the near future. read more

Great atmosphere, terrible wine (sorry!). Okay, maybe not terrible, but very unique in a way I didn't particularly enjoy. The wine here is VERY sweet, as it is a mix of grapes and other tropical island fruits. It's an experience, to be sure. I would have enjoyed the wine more if it were paired with some sort of food offerings to balance out the sweetness, so order a cheese plate or something with your tasting. But, the shop itself is really cute and has beautiful volcanic artwork on the walls, and appears to have lots of outdoor seating as well. We went after hiking in the Volcano National Park so we were gross and just wanted to sit and hang out. It was cold there! Outside had heaters but our kids weren't wanting to hang out long so we stayed inside. The wine. Unfortunately I'm a huge snob having grown up in Sonoma County, CA and this wine was barely considerable as "wine". Maybe a wine cooler? We tried the white, red, Pinot, blush, and macadamia nut honey wine. Favorite was the blush. Too sweet for us. But fun to stop by and support a local venue. read more

INCREDIBLE. Never in my life have I been able to taste a wine and say what fruits I can taste. As much as I love wine, I really just notice whether it's smooth or not when it comes to taste. Not here at Volcano Winery. We came here on our honeymoon and my husband and I were BLOWN AWAY by every wine. Even the ones that weren't our favorite were still delicious. When you walk in, you feel like you're at a house - it's a very welcoming location. There's an outdoor seating area with tents and an area you can wander around outside. Inside the storefront there are a few higher tables to stand at and a few lower tables. Unfortunately no indoor seating so if you want to sit, you'll have to suffer the incredible Hawaiian weather outside. We ordered two wine tastings and some of their cheese spread (forgot the specific one, but it had bacon in it) every bite and every sip had us saying how amazing it was. We had a gentleman doing our tasting and he was very knowledgeable and kind, though didn't talk much on a personal level, just very business forward. He ended up leaving as soon as our tasting was done so we felt bad thinking we were keeping him past his shift time. After he left there were still two other employees there that continued to come over and check on us. They both told us about their wine club and I was shocked to hear it was a FREE WINE CLUB! I've never heard about a wine club that's free to join - usually you have to pay registration fees, but the only cost is the wine itself (shipping is also free!). Well we signed up which gave us a 25% off discount and one free tasting per person per visit - since we had already paid for both of our tastings and didn't receive the discount, they gave us a bottle in replace of the two tastings. We then bought two more bottles, because it was just so good! Our collective favorite was the Pinot Noir - it's the smoothest Pinot we've ever had and the second we tasted it, our eyes bulged out and we both exclaimed how delicious it was. My two favorites were the blush - very easy to drink- and the guava wine where every sip had a different flavor profile and it was such a cool experience. My husband's favorite was the volcano red, I enjoyed it, but I definitely prefer sweet white wines. His second favorite really surprised me - the tea infused wine. It tasted just like iced tea! We also enjoyed the macadamia but honey, but it tasted like straight honey so it was our least favorite of them all. I don't know if this wine is going to blow away the palate of a seasoned wine drinker, but I enjoyed their blends. Volcano Winery boasts that it is the only winery on the Big Island! Which is pretty cool, along with the fact that they are so close to Mauna Loa (an active volcano). You can their vines as you walk in. It is a tucked away spot in a neighborhood in Volcano, HI. Just beautiful, lush and quiet. Places to park. A nice big sampling room. Tastings are $18/pp and you get a taste of all their wines (which amounts to about a glass full). I enjoyed their Volcano Red the best. I liked the sampling of the mead wine too, especially since they use the macadamia nut honey from Big Island Bees (across the island and a great visit too). After visiting a black sand beach, we wanted to see & taste what volcanic infused grapes are. So the farming is in the back. I think there was a couple chickens around. We did a wine tasting & all the wines had a unique taste & blend of something. I end up taking a bottle home & they did provide packaging material which was nice & helpful. I tried buying the estate wines but they were reserved so call ahead if you want the exclusive. The staff was very nice & informing on how the wine was developed & also informative on how it's like living in the big island & they much enjoy it.
