Had some wonderful pizza here. Top notch in fact. But I always order salad when I order pizza. The only down grade for this restaurant is because of the Caesar Salad. I have never been served a Caesar Salad that not one romaine leaf was cut in any way. If this is how you want your salad served please include a steak knife along with the salad. Was going to eat at the Eagle's Nest Lighthouse Cafe, but arrived at 2p and they close at 2p. However, in the same building was Lanikai Brewing. This is Volcano, Hawaii and there are not many choices. The place was bustling and the server was all over the place. Not a lot of options on the menu, but there were a lot of cheeseburgers coming out of the kitchen. Looked good. So, that's what we ordered. You could choose fries or a house salad. I wanted a refreshing house salad even though the fries looked good. The first clue that this might not be the right place to eat is that they only had 3 options for sald dressing, citrus miso, caesar, and one other--NO RANCH. OK, not a giant deal, but I wanted ranch. My wife wanted the poi cheesecake, but they were out. We decided to share the burger and she ordered coffee with cream and sugar. They brought out a french press, but no cream or sugar. When we finally were able to flag down the server to ask for cream and sugar, she said they did not have any cream besides coconut cream they use for cocktails. Not having any other option that's what she went for. It was just ok. Seemed like a waste of a $12 coffee. What place serving coffee doesn't have cream?!?! Ridiculous. When they brought out the burger, it looked great. The "house salad" on the other hand, was JUST LETTUCE. No tomatoes, no croutons, no cucumber--nothing to make it like any other house salad I've had before. I made a bad choice selecting a handful of lettuce instead of fries (value-wise and taste-wise). The burger was good, but nothing to write home about. Look up "house salad" in a dictionary. It should have at least something else besides lettuce. I feel cheated. The server, while very busy, was very pleasant. We didn't complain. We just ate, paid, and left. If you can, pick another place or go with the pizza or burger WITH FRIES. read more

I came around 7pm on a Tuesday and waited around 5 minutes for a table. It was pretty busy, but service was fast. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. It was cozy inside the restaurant. pig & fire -- the pizza dough was really good. it was nice and crispy, while also being fluffy. The ratio of toppings was a bit off though-- I'm a mushroom lover but this was too much mushroom, there was more mushroom than meat. Also there wasn't that much cheese so the toppings weren't staying on top of the pizza. I liked the roasted garlic in this, but again there wasn't barely any meat. volcano style ramen -- I wanted to like this, but it was pretty flavorless. The broth didn't taste like much and the mushrooms and bokchoy also just tasted like water. The pork was way too salty though. If you come here I'd go for the pizza instead, skip the ramen. read more

A short drive from the park, we stopped in for some local craft beer. The small dining area inside was full, we sat on the patio at a high top and enjoyed the views of the slow comings and going of the locals. The waitress was very friendly and engaging. Subject to personal taste, I had the Pillbox Porter and Moku Imperial IPA. Both excellent flavor without being overwhelming. We're staying in Volcano and there are not a lot of options for food and drinks. Lanikai Brewing is a gem in the ashes. The Bees Knees pizza is amazing! The combination of pesto, goat cheese and hot honey combined with the salty pepperoni is perfection. Their pizza crust is light and airy. The La Suprema pizza was also delicious but the toppings were very heavy so the crust was soggy in the middle. Great beer options and I really enjoyed the Kau Weala Cooler - so refreshing. Place is clean. It's very small and there's a tv that keeps up with the volcano. The service is fast and friendly. They went over the menu and where to find things. We ordered the tacos as an app. My husband got the ramen and I got the short ribs. They were out of the raw menu and one of the desserts. The food was really good. We always eat here on our monthly staycation from Waimea side, never disappointed! We usually have pizza and salad which are excellent, (had the day before this meal) and chased down with one of my favorite Lanikai Shave Ice tropical seltzers. Food came out fairly quickly though The volcano ramen's broth was pretty watery, not very flavorful. Also the beef in the sort rib adobo was a bit too salty for my taste. Food around volcano national park is limited and pricey. This, in addition to the Kileau Military Camp, are good tasty options. Food - the Ulu tacos are a delight. We've never had them before and wanted to try. Ramen broth is not very flavorful but the pork belly is very tasty. Sausage pizza with caramelized onions is good, easy to share for 2 people. Coconut haupia pudding is refreshing. Service - fast and friendly. Always a wait after 7pm. They usually have empty tables but because they don't have enough serving staff it's hard to turn the tables around quickly. read more

Terrible service. We were fine with it taking 25 minutes to get food but the server was rude from the moment we walked in. When food did arrive it was delivered at completely different times so after the first dish was finished the next person received their meal. Located very close to the volcano nat. Park, we were reading about the pizza and how good it was. So there we went. Initial vibes were good and the staff was very friendly and checked on us regularly. There were 2 very drunk men sitting inside which was a little annoying but nothing they could do but be nice to them. I ordered a few flights to sample some beers and none disappointed. For food we ordered 2 pizzas with one being the Bees Knees and the other was the La suprema. Both were amazing but we highly recommend the bees knees. The dough is handmade daily and the oven produced a beautiful crust which was not overly hard. The pizza was 5/5 for sure. The only thing that brought the review down was that while we were finishing up, one worker came by and sprayed the table next to us with the table cleaner spray and it went all over to our side and got some in the food and drink. I would definitely recommend that they pay attention and be more cautious when cleaning to avoid tables being sprayed with the chemical solution. Friendly staff, quick service. Delicious food spot. Went as a group of 7 near closing and were quickly & happily seated. I didn't feel rushed at all, and the dishes came out fast. The ulu tacos were very unique and delicious! I thought I wouldn't enjoy them but the mix of toppings and flavors, along with the soft potato-y texture of the ulu, were simply delicious. However, the catch of the day (or whatever the daily fish dish is called) was PHENOMENAL. I've been to quite a few restaurants and this was absolutely a fine dining-level dish. The curry was sweet, coconutty, and rich, with deliciously soft pieces of purple sweet potato and squash. Lanikai Brewing Company was our rainy day stop in Hilo, and while the weather wasn't exactly cooperating, the food and drinks made it worthwhile. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated, and there isn't much of a designated waiting area so you're essentially hanging out on the front porch. On a dry, sunny day that might be part of the charm, but in the rain and chill it's not the most comfortable setup. They do have outdoor seating, though again, it's definitely better suited for clear skies. Once we were seated inside, the experience completely turned around. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and service was quick without feeling rushed. I ordered the Mai Tai which was well balanced and pleasantly strong without being overpowering. My husband went with one of their IPAs and was equally happy with his choice. We shared the Parmesan garlic fries and the Pig and Fire pizza, and both were excellent. The fries come topped with an aioli which isn't something you see everywhere, but it worked really well and added a creamy richness to the garlic and cheese. The pizza had a great balance of smoky, savory flavors with just enough heat to keep it interesting. Overall, not the coziest spot to wait out a storm, but once you're inside, it's a solid place for good beer, strong cocktails, and satisfying food. On a sunnier day, I imagine it would feel even more enjoyable. read more

This is my favorite neighborhood spot and this would have been a 5 star review had they not changed their recipes or the way their cooks are making two of the main dishes. The braised short rib adobo is usually delicious... hearty tasty and tender. Then there was a huge dip in quality, flavor and the way it was made over the last 3 months - it was drenched in adobo sauce, waaaay too salty and too sweet to the point it was hard to eat. I just had the dish again tonight and it's back to perfection. The same happened with my other favorite dish - the fish curry. Perfectly flavored, large portion and amazing veggies. Then the recipe seemed to change, the curry went from a purple to an orange color and I didn't like it as much. I haven't ordered it since so I don't know if it changed back. The Bees Knees pizza is always a win so when in doubt order that ! Fries soggy and inconsistent. Cute but small place. We went to the Volcano National Park and Lave tube and wanting a bike to eat before the drive back to our resort. We seem to get there just in time before the dinner rush. We were sat quickly, staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of their menu items. Definitely seemed like a popular locals hangout. Love when we find a place locals also dine at. I had the Poke. Seat yourself inside or outside. Menu is clear with sandwich, pizza, and salad options. Fun fact, they make their own distilled spirits and some of their items include "good for your belly" items. We tried the Da Roni pizza with homemade dough. It was good. I had read a review raving about the coconut custard made with kefir. I knew I needed to try it since I'm big on keeping my gut happy. Well, it wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. I'll let you know later if it did anything else. ;) Since the place we're staying wasn't close, I ordered the fish (Ahi) sandwich to go with fries and sauce on the side. Visited Lanikai Brewing Company after my visit to Volcano National Park. It was around 3:30pm so they were getting ready for dinner menu and only had pizza and salad. We had the pipikaula pizza, which was amazing. The Niu Cream hot Chocolate which was OK and a alcoholic drink, i don't remember the name, this was pretty good too. We even picked up dinner here which starts at 4pm. We took Beef Short Rib Adobo to go. I loved this dish. The servers were friendly and helpful. The bartender was phenomenal here. He was hustling between the bar, table service, hosting and even bussing. I mistook him as a manager because he was doing all the things and making it look easy. Best little find to visit while near the volcano. We got the ramen, fried fish of the day, Pipikaula and Bee's Knees pizzas, Caesar salad and kid's pasta. The crowd favorite was the Bee's Knees-- it was unique with the pesto, goat cheese and the hint of spice. The least favorite was the Pipikaula-- it seemingly was missing something to give it that pizzazz. The kids loved the caesar as it had crouton overload and the kids pasta was a hit. The friend fish bites were good-- the fish was super light and flaky so not overcooked. The ramen was the least favorite of the whole selection. I was really craving noodles and broth.. it was okay. Nothing to write home about but did hit the spot. Beer wise we tried the passion fruit IPA, pilsner and porter-- both were okay. The more interesting were the seltzers. So happy to have a new restaurant in our little quiet town. There are very few choices in the area without driving all the way to Hilo. One of the things we miss the most is a place to get a good burger. This place has THE MOST perfect burger. Perfection! The downside is it's not available after 3pm. We have tried the following... pizza had 3x -not consistent but decent salad (the dressing is so good I would drink it.) I want it everyday. Fish sandwich- has potential. Lacked flavor. Fish dinner - served w squash /Indian flavors. Would not recommend. Ramen - super yummy! Highly recommended. It's a small spot so be prepared to sit close to people and probably a wait. Order the flight of beers (four choices, totally worth it), and then pick your fav for the finale. I have friends that have taken me there three times now. Each time I ask if they have beer with only 4 ingredients, malt, hops, yeast & water. The answer is always no. All the brew is filled with Mamaki, vanilla, lilikoi and other things that do not belong in proper beer. They treat me like I am strange for asking for a regular lager. This is the second time they burned my friends pizza. Another friend asked to remove cheese and tomato from his burger, they up charged him for the removed items! The burger and fries are good but for $20 the waitress should speak French with a towel on her arm. When I got home I mentioned the place to my mowing guy. We stopped here for a late dinner after viewing the volcano. The service was great, they were able to get us a table cleaned very quickly, and they were patient with us having tired and grouchy kids. The parmesan garlic fries were a good large portion, as well as the kids sliders. The Ulu tacos were different and interesting being a vegetarian taco. They were almost like a potato taco just a little bit less flavor. The Poke was a little bland, different than I'm used to on the mainland. There's no rice or toppings to add flavor and substance, but the rice crisp was good and helped. I would have enjoyed it more with a little rice, seaweed salad and avocado. Decided to meet some friends for a quick bite to eat in a casual setting. Upon arrival we were able to choose our table. Decided to sit on the patio and enjoy the cool weather. Service was prompt, they gave us toss on the most popular orders and were able to accommodate a vegan at the table. I ordered the beet salad and some Ka'u coffee. The salad was a healthy portion and the ingredients all tasted fresh and high quality. The French press coffee was delicious and was perfect for the chilly overcast weather. Fries were very good. We had to ask for water and also for silverware but I'm sure it was opening day things. Menu was also limited, we will go back when the full menu was available. Over all the place was nice, very small. I think there were 15 (2 person) tables inside and some outside seating. We went early but was still pretty busy.
