I remember liking their drinks, but I never stopped back in, as I don't go out to drink too often. More recently, I was here a few months ago with a large group for their Sunday Roast. The staff were friendly and gave us good service, even though the place was crowded, and there was some loud but pleasant live music playing in the background. Of course, a bunch of us got cocktails. I went with their signature Irish Coffee, as I thought the Alexander one, based on a Brandy Alexander, would be a little bit too sweet. Said drink was $17 and had Teeling Small Batch Irish whiskey, Andytown coffee, Demerara, freshly whipped cream, and nutmeg. As can be seen in the hundreds, or rather thousands, of other reviews, their Irish coffee is excellent. It's not too sweet or too bitter, with enough whiskey for just a tiny kick of alcohol, along with a hit of spice. Another person loved the $20 Frozen version with the same whiskey, along with Mr. Black coffee liqueur, cold brew coffee, cane sugar, and cream, and I believe someone else got the fancier Alexander version for $21. Outside of their coffees, there was a mix of other cocktails, including the Doctor's Orders for $21, with Wild Turkey 101 bourbon, Laird's apple brandy, cinnamon, allspice, grapefruit, and lime. I remember trying it as I gave the other person a sip of my drink and enjoying it. The majority of us went with the same $44 Sunday Roast as our main dish. This consisted of a roasted sirloin of beef, bread stuffing, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese gratin, roasted vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, beef gravy, and horseradish cream. The beef was cooked to my requested temperature, and only a small portion of fat wasn't rendered down properly. However, this wasn't the case for others, with one person's steak in particular having a lot of fat. I partially blame this on the sheer number of orders, but that was unfortunate. The roasted vegetables consisted of carrots and broccoli, and they had a nice char, along with the potatoes. The stuffing was standard, and I liked the unique gratin in particular, as it added an extra texture and saltiness to the dish. The gravy it came with was nice, with some richness and a good beefy flavor, which paired nicely with the Yorkshire pudding and the vegetables. Lastly, I used a small bit of the horseradish, which helped cut the richness. Overall, it was good, but if I had one of the other people's plates, I might have liked it a bit less. This is a tasty place with particularly good cocktails. They have thousands of good reviews for a very good reason. Good luck in DC and Austin as well.

I have never been treated as rudely as I was on Sunday night at Von. From the moment my friends and I entered the bar (which we have been to on many other occasions in the past, and will never return again), we were greeted by a smug meat-head of a "bouncer"/doorman, who checked our IDs. The bartenders at the time seemed uninterested and preoccupied, taking their time getting our drink orders even though we were practically the only people in the bar- it was around happy hour, 7:30pm. We ordered multiple bottles of wine, and sat in the front of the bar, as more friends joined our party. Keep in mind these were all beautiful, professional women who were gathered for a friend's birthday party. As more people joined the group, chairs were added to accommodate everyone, and we were then told that we could not do this (by the meat-head). He proceeded to "shush" us multiple times, as if we were in a library and not a bar in NYC. Not only were we still one of the only groups of people in the place, we were spending a good amount of money to celebrate our friend's birthday and have a good time-- eventually meat-head told us we were being kicked out, apparently one of the other "patrons" told him that someone in our party had "given him the finger" behind his back, from inside the bar. Whether or not this actually occurred is still up for debate, as I did not witness anything of the sort. However, the fact remains that this bouncer, who acted like he was at Club 40/40 and not an allegedly chill downtown bar, treated a bunch of beautiful women like they were college frat boys. We then went around the corner to Saxon and Parole, where we were not only treated like the ladies we are, we were welcomed warmly and even given a round on the house (take note, Von losers).. Guess we should have started there and skipped Von altogether. We won't be making that mistake again.. read more

Ugh. This place is a dump. Don't even consider it. Do yourself a huge favour and just walk over the road to Saxon & Parole. Much nicer. Von smells of rancid alcohol. The doorman is unbelievably rude. He said the F word at least twice to a group of women. Disgusting people skills. Then he called a very attractive woman in our group "UGLY". Yes, believe it. That's exactly what he said. No mistake either since we all heard it. In what universe is that actually acceptable. Not only from professional staff to customers, or from a man to a woman he doesn't know, or from a human being to another human being. This place is the worst. But go there by all means if you want expensive abuse hurled at you. Oh and the final insult, they scammed us. After paying for our drinks separately, they charged someone in the group for the total tab. Eeek. Luckily we were on to it but i'm sure they've got away with it many times in group situations. And when we queried it, they said, the didn't need to provide an explanation because, and I quote, "We are Von, we don't need to!". Oh really. Well you can be Von without my cash or patronage. von is a great place for a bunch of things - casual drink, dancing, conversation. the drinks are a bit overpriced from what i remember, but the best part about von is its dance environment. the basement dance floor is really fun (but only if you're already drunk) - crowded, sweaty, loud, hot etc., while the upstairs bar area is more chill but still a place you can move around in. i think you have to be in the mood to enjoy something like this - definitely a fun place. TIPS - doormen were nice and there is no cover, and basically everyone gets let in - there's a card minimum/drink minimum for cards, so be prepared! - well drinks are SURPRISINGLY strong - i got a rum and coke and it was mostly rum. well done, von. - crowd seems to be young to mid 20s, a bit on the trendy side - good music read more

Why isn't there a zero rating???? This has forced me to give one star which is entirely undeserved. From the outside, this bar is unremarkable. From the inside it is pretty unremarkable too. Sometimes that is cool. In this instance, it isn't. I thought there was something wrong with my wine and I was right. When I complained, the snooty bartender woman looked at me as if I was crazy. I wasn't crazy but my stomach was the next day. Ouch.......The music was so loud and it was the sort of place that out of towners come to and do shots and then vomit. When you walk in you think it's going to be a cute and fun bar but one is sadly mistaken. While drinking up quite a decent bar tab here the blonde fake tanned, probably in her 40s bartender that is working right now is accompanied by her donkey of a man friend (in which I didn't know at the time) drinking on the other side of the bar. How can you not like a place with a moose head?…read more I have lived in this city for YEARS and I have never heard (or seen) of this place. That said, I feel like I must have walked pass this place many times, since Ave C has been a integral part of many bar crawls. Anywho, I came for an "private" event on an early Friday evening and I was very surprised (in a good way) with the bar. One, the bar had a 2-4-1 special, very rare for a Friday night. I do not know if this special is a normal thing for Friday nights or if it was specific for our event. Two, the bartender was really nice and knew how to make a strong drink. Actually, he was quite funny and really interacted with the bar patrons. The space has the appearance like a simple dive bar; but, word on the street that the bar has quite a bit of dancing during the weekend. Bedlam seems like a place where people of all sexual orientations (and their friends) can come and have a few drinks. Based on my visit, Bedlam appears to be a place where one (or a group) would go to get a few drinks before going to another place in the area. Of course this statement has to be validated with another visit to Bedlam.

Many of them are shitholes that handily appeal to [1] and [2] (meaning that nobody wants to be in them, and I can sit down to drink and not want to murder anyone for bumping into me repeatedly). Some of them may even rival Bedlam as a place that fulfills [1], [2], and [3], although I have yet to find another spot that you can show up to around 8 pm on a Saturday (it doesn't really get going until 10:30 or 11 pm, at which point [2] is out the window) and have the whole bar and dance floor available for you and your friends. But I am absolutely, 100% sure that Bedlam is the only place in the neighborhood (perhaps the country) that can possibly realize my lifelong dream of combining [1], [2], [3] AND [4] in the same fantastic establishment. Moose heads FTW.

Great little neighborhood bar with amazing cocktails and awesome service…read more I went here specifically because I had read about the bar owner and how he financed his most recent album with his tips and I wanted to support that creativity and intensity. Corey was the bartender on a rainy Sunday afternoon-and the drinks were amazing-I had the Black Manhattan-which was nuanced and interesting. We had a great conversation as well! Highly recommended!!

I came here for a happy hour event with an organization…read more The bar is cozy and has a few tables for sitting, as well some bar seating. The menu consists of wine, cocktails and beer. They were out of white wine so I had a glass of of rosè that was good. They have two tiny bathrooms that were clean. The staff were excellent. Being that I was at an event, the sound level was pretty high. Not sure if it is quieter in here other evenings. Would come back!

Has a very cool, back room that is private and can be rented separately. Easily could fit 35-40 people. What's to cheer - Good drinks.
