A perfect refuge from the mad storm that is MacDougal Street after 9 pm, the Up & Up is a post-pretentious era cocktail speakeasy, perfect for a date or just quiet drinks with friends (in my case)--but more likely, for a date:). A simple buzz of the doorbell gave us immediate access to a little tucked-away table in the darkly lit salon. Service is excellent, with knowledgeable staff guiding you through a plethora of libations, the signature cocktails sorted by years (presumably, the ones when they were conceived). I had the excellent Screen Door Slam (incidentally the earliest cocktail listed), a sweet but not too cloying concoction based around absinthe and bourbon. The snacks, such as olives and truffle popcorn, are just enough to keep you sated for a couple of hours (or however long young people spend at romantic venues these days). read more

And did I really come here and order a non-alcoholic drink? Yes. The Thirsty Ghost has so many ingredients that I like and I was right. It was truly the best mocktail I've ever had - from the floral essence to the lightly sweet flavor to the ice cube with the Up & Up logo on it! It was a perfect drink. Serious attitude here. The cocktails were very tasty but the service and vibe were so off-putting, I will never go back. I made a reservation in person more than 24 hours in advance. I wanted to treat an old friend to a quick birthday toast before a show she was attending nearby. Later that night, another friend became available to join but, because they do not actually have a phone that takes calls (only offers an announcement to go to Resy or email) adding another person was not at all easy. I would have had to cancel and rebook and wasn't sure I'd be able to (reservation was for a Saturday night) In most places, a table for 3 easily accommodates 4. But not here. When two of us arrived, they made it clear this was a big problem. I would have walked out right then but I would have been charged $90! We decided to stay and make the best of it, which was a challenge. For a speakeasy, the vibe was aggressive, not relaxing. Very loud music and not great acoustics.) Too cramped to be comfortable, proving that small does not necessarily mean cozy! We asked if we could take a chair from the table next to us, which was empty (it was only 6 pm; I told our server we'd be gone by 7 because my friend, the birthday girl, had to catch a show.) We were told No! To say the waiter was cold, unfriendly, and indifferent is generous. He was totally rude. He literally told my friend she couldn't sit in a chair that was otherwise empty, knowing we'd be leaving momentarily. Then he had the gail to hand me the bill with a 22% tip pre-selected...and watched over me while I signed it! Definitely the least satisfying $100 I have ever spent. Disappointing. It was good to see my friends, but I so wish I hadn't picked this place. Never again. read more

I did have a dirty martini that was not on here. My husband Tony had the Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem/ 2024, which consisted of Old Overholt Rye, Etna Rhubarb Amaro, Creme de Cassis, Orange & Peychaud's Bitters. He LOVED it. I decided to go w/ a mocktail. I went with 2019's Happy Trails which generally has Suntory Toki Whisky, El Dorado 12-yr Rum, Blume Marilien Apricot Eau de Vie, Yuzu, Pineapple and fennel. It was really good but I've had mocktails in this taste profile that were around $14.00. They still charged the SAME $19.00. When asked about this, the mixologist said they put in the same amount of work/ time. Nonetheless, it's a cute, small speakeasy. This is the 2nd time I've been here and the waiters are always well versed on the drinks. Background music was a mix of 80s, LCD Soundsystem and the like. Good vibe! read more

We walked in with no reservations and waited half an hour to be seated. After being seated for not up to 5 minutes, one of the bartenders came over and told us we had to "Get Out" because there was a reservation. It turned out that the couple to the right side of us was leaving so the reservation was seated there. And guess what, no apologizes!!!! The same bartender then turned to the two females that was sitting down to the left side of us and started chatting them up and had their drinks served while no one came to take our orders. When I got my first drink, it honestly tasted terrible. I told the bartender that I wanted something sweet and NO whiskey at all in replacement since he offered. This guys goes and makes a whiskey based cocktail and when I told him I did not like it, he YELLS at me and asked me what I want. I once again repeated myself and he goes ahead and makes me a spicy drink. I do not understand why he can't make a drink to my request. My friend and I asked for the bill and waited 10 minutes and no one came to us, there were other guests paying and leaving. (I think it was because we were the only Asians at the bar that night? This was more of an up and down experience for me (get it?). But seriously, I wish I could of loved this place. As for all speakeasy bars, there's always a code word or a hidden doorbell that makes you feel like you're in on a secret. This one was a short stairway down where you ring the doorbell and the host leads you into a dimly lit and almost spacious (for nyc standards) bar. My excitement was sparked by the bubbly waitress and I was almost convinced I came to the right place. The magic faded when we got our cocktails. Don't get me wrong, the cocktails are definitely good, but I was off-put by how sweet they were. I like a little sweetness in my cocktails, but I felt like someone accidentally threw in a tablespoon of sugar in each drink. I got the midori sour, the gin & tonic, and another cocktail which I forgot the name of, but the only non sweet cocktail was the gin & tonic and it was not my favorite. Maybe I just chose the wrong cocktails. Maybe gin is not what up & up specializes in, I don't know. What I do know, is that the vibes are better than the drinks and there are probably better bars in the area. read more

It was a dark and stormy Sunday... (don't worry, this isn't going to be tied-in with a cocktail later), close to 5pm. We were looking for some late afternoon post-lunch libations and didn't want to walk further than a few feet from where my husband had just wolfed down a slice from Artichoke Basille. Yelp pointed us right across the street to this little lifesaver. Total downpour. I'm sure you can imagine the good feeling of landing on the doorstep of a subterranean lair. Rang the bell and admitted that we didn't have resos (I doubt you need them at off-times like this, but I appreciate that they are a possibility). We were quietly ushered to bar seats (wish I had asked for one of the tables instead but I figured they were reserved. They were not, however, as several remained open for the entire hour or so that we were there). We were told we could stay until approximately 7:30. A little weird (that was like 2.5 hours away) but OK. I guess there are those folks who overstay... It's a lovely place, sleek and sophisticated speakeasy vibes, mixologists expertly attending to their concoctions. I had a Rum Running Gentleman, which contains a lovely large signature ice cube (yes, that's their uber cool logo etched in). The drink didn't have the flavor profile I was looking for, as all I could taste was rum. While all of the drinks are beautifully put together (we had a birds eye view), most appeared to be alcohol-forward (read: strong). I didn't see much in the way of wine and that's my preference, so take this review with a grain of salt. I also recommend that you ask your bartender for recommendations. read more
