I purchased a cloud-pruned juniper from Small's on June 22. By early September, it had developed…read moresevere, rapidly progressing dieback throughout the canopy, so I called the garden center looking for advice and trying to understand what might be happening. I spoke directly with the garden center manager. I explained that the tree had been watered, that I actively monitor its soil moisture with a Bluetooth sensor, and that June and July had been fairly wet. I also explained that I have planted approximately 395 plants across my property this season and that this juniper is the only one to experience this kind of failure. In the same bed are four small, newly planted Hicks yew whips, along with artemisia and blue fescue, all of which remain healthy under the same general conditions. I was not claiming that this definitively proved what caused the juniper's decline. I was providing relevant context and looking for knowledgeable guidance. Despite that, I was repeatedly told the damage was simply because I had not watered the juniper every single day. When I questioned that conclusion, the conversation became unnecessarily confrontational. Before I had asked for a replacement, refund, or any other compensation, the manager told me, "I don't warranty my plants," and then sarcastically asked, "Do you want me to give you a free plant because yours died?" I asked her to replay what she had just said and consider how it sounded from a customer-service standpoint. Shortly afterward, she told me that I had a bad attitude. When I said I would review my experience with the interaction, she hung up on me. I understand that plants sometimes fail after transplanting and that a nursery cannot control every variable once a plant leaves its property. My complaint is not simply that the tree is struggling, nor did I begin the call by demanding a free replacement. I called seeking horticultural advice about a relatively expensive specimen plant. Instead, the plant's condition was immediately attributed to neglect, the information I provided was largely dismissed, I was spoken to sarcastically, personally criticized, and ultimately hung up on. Small's has an impressive plant selection, which is why I went there in the first place. Unfortunately, after this interaction with the garden center manager, I would not feel comfortable purchasing another significant tree or shrub from them.

Bethany was more than helpful and patient while we played with the color match to get the paint color JUST right. Like every other SW store this one carries all the brushes, tarps, rollers, pans and tapes you could possibly need for your project. So off to the DIY Big Box stores to see if I can purchase a piece and have them cut it. Menards nope "we don't cut lumber something about insurance, but try Lowe's next door" says the young man. So jump parking lots to Lowe's. Walk in through the lumber entrance door and first guy I see I ask. He points to the saw, this monstrosity hanging from the wall, and says "the saw is down for repairs." He directs me to Von Tobel lumber "up the block and turn right." I walk in and I am immediately greeted by a guy at the counter. I ask him if he had any small pieces of 1" x 6" for sale. He said "no we don't." I said I need a 12" piece and if I bought a standard length board could he cut it to size? He says "the best I can do is cut it in half so you can fit it in your car." I drive a GMC Sierra so not concerned about fitting it in my car. So I say, " so let me understand this, you will cut the board into two four foot pieces, but you can't help me out and just saw off a 12" piece" for me?" His reply is "no I'm sorry we're too busy today." So now I'm on a mission to find a board so get back to my truck and search on Yelp on my mobile app. Pioneer Lumber comes up so I give them a call. I explain what I need and the gentleman says, "I'm sure I got something I can hook you up with." I say ok great I'm on the way, who should I ask for? He laughs and says I'm the only one here. I get there and he has 3 pieces of grade A pine sitting on the counter for me, each one one inch longer than the other. He says "a buck a piece and they're yours"! He rings me up, I pay and I'm on my way. I don't remember the gentleman's name but I believe he was the proprietor. In a world where customer service suffers for all kinds of reasons, this man truly came through for me. Thank you Pioneer Lumber!

I'm currently collecting Cerise and Marseille pieces and the manager helped me do just that. She was friendly and her service was excellent. Once I got home I realized I needed more. She went above and beyond to send me pictures and prices of the items I desired - I paid over the phone and received them very well packaged the next day. I can't wait to go back and spend more money - my husband, not so much.
