Stopped in here to get an air gun, the kid at the check out was nice and professional. On the other hand the older gentleman didn't seem to wanna help much with my needs with the air gun, I asked him if I needed something to carry the gun in he said no, I asked him what bb's I would need , looked at me blank :/ I picked up some bb's off the shelf and I'm like how about these, will these work ? He's like yeah, I'm like ok so that's all I need? He's like yeah ... ok then!?&# I get the thing home and discover you need these co2 cartridges , hello!!? I freakin saw them on the shelf too, so then I had to go to Walmart the next day to pick them up, because I'll be damned if I spend one more dime in this store ! I am well familiar with this store, having shopped it since they were located in the nearby/defunct Marquette Mall. Over the years they have been a go-to for the odd hardware and plumbing item, kitchen appliance (they match Amazon pricing) and paint/project need. And also specialty hardware--they have tons of bin boxes with all sorts of fasteners. Having said that, and it being a locally owned chain, I don't make these comments lightly. I don't relish giving business to any of the "big box" lumber and hardware chains, many of which are located literally right down the road, but I'm gradually going to them more and more. And not so much for lower pricing, but because they treat their customers better. Hardware stores have always seemed to attract an usual demographic of employee. Retirees, part-timers, failed to launch teens, bingo playing old ladies, conservative religious fanatics, and middle-aged hardcore employees who act like they're stuck in some level of Milton's Hell and customers are all ignorant demons, whose sole purpose is to get them called out from the breakroom and torture them with stupid questions. The latter has been my experience at Kabeline's, and a consistent one. As an ACE franchise they also handle/sell Craftsman tools. This is significant to me as I own a few and periodically need to replace them, the local Sears now having closed. Craftsman policy was and still is that if the tool is on the rack, or your tool is obsolete and the replacement for it is on the rack, they are to replace it. Not the case at Kabelines. They will refuse. In an exchange with one of their "hardcores" this morning I was provided with no tool, no phone# to contact Sears or means to resolve my issue and told to go over to "Lowes". Yep, in a condescending tone dripping in sarcasm they sent me to the competition. They're happy to sell the product to you and take your money, but anything beyond that then go somewhere else. Last, one unnerving thing they do at this store is having a clerk posted at the door asking you your business as soon as you walk in. No kidding. They come right up to you and stand there and ask you your business. Then they get on a headset and broadcast an APB out to whatever department you told them you came to shop. You know, eff that. It's not helpful, it's intrusive. It's like being pulled over by the local PD and asked for your papers and where you're going. On an average day when I stop I see 20 staffers wandering the store and no customers. No mystery to me why. read more

This is mostly a review of the rental service ,, well the customer service was very lacking ,,but the price for the rentals was good ,however they did not sell the staples for the electric staple gun, so we never got to do the job. We would be willing to have paid more for the rental if we could've gotten staples so overall it was a waste of time and money. Hard to believe that this oversight seems to continue. read more

had 18 screens to be remade. I called and they said bring them in. I brought them in 9 days ago and paid for them. Was told it would be a week and a half. Got a call yesterday. Two of the screens are specialized and can't be done there. I understand that. For the remaining, I was told that they do not have time and they would not be doing them. This after a week. No comment that they would take longer, just no we will not be doing them as we are too busy. They are dropping them back off at my house, but I am out of town and now have to start from scratch. If you couldn't do them, why did you take them, have me pay over 1,000 for them ( a fair price ) and then call a week later and say too bad. I asked this question and received no answer. A week ago I was excited to have a great local hardware store. Today I realize I don't have one. The marketing manager emailed back that I had been refunded. mm, yes as you didn't do the work. Also that I could drop my screens off in Mid September at another location. Because after this service I want to give you a large order and trust that you won't call back in a week and say sorry we are too busy and have no space to store your screens? I have taken my lawn mower there twice for repair. The first time they had the mower for close to 3 months. They said they were giving priority to snow blowers (not communicated at drop off) even though I needed to mow my law one last time in the fall. This year they said it would take 2-3 weeks. It has been 5 weeks and they told me it was repaired 4 days ago but not received back to the store. I have spoken with them twice and they said they would check on where it is and call me back. Neither time did they call me back. Bar code tracking has been around for 50 years but they will not use technology. Understaffed, poor customer service, uncomminicative and terriable operations. I can only recommend going elseware unfortunately. read more

We always loved going to Kabelin's in Michigan City because of the friendliness of the staff. However, don't go in as long as the COVID-19 is still around. The older woman who has been there for years was anything but accommodating and friendly. In fact, she was downright rude. Apparently you can't compare items and have to know exactly what you want or you will be scolded. One would think neighbourhood stores would be bending over backwards to help. It might a while before I go there again. I think i may be going to LaPorte from now on. read more

I have been a frequent customer at Kabelin's for 40 years. Their customer service is the best! Trained staff are always easy to find to help you locate the product you need. I always know that they will have what I need because their selection of merchandise is great. I am also impressed that many of their employees have been with them for many years and that many of them know me by name. They really care about their customers! read more

This is unquestionably the best hardware store in Michigan City. Staff is knowledgeable, helpful and polite. They will help you find the right answer not necessarily the one with the biggest cost. They are more concerned with repeat business than in short term profit. I've shopped there for 22 years and rarely been disappointed. When compared to the mostly useless employees at Lowe's and totally useless ones at Menard's, they totally rock. read more
