Love Love Love this place! Extensive menu and tap selection. I always go with my fav, Dunkel. They have great enclosed patio which is cozy and does a good job of reducing the road noise. The indoor place has a bunch of tables and is a perfect setting for hanging out in the winters with its rich wood finish and dim lighting. Von Trier has a chill atmosphere. It is usually the place of choice I visit when I don't want to be surrounded by the hard partying nightclub crowd. This is the only neighborhhood bar that I like to visit while watching the game and drinking my beer. I can't believe that I have never been here before. It is a terrible mistake and I will definitely be back soon. Way too many delicious looking drink options! I started with a sour brandy old fashion and they did it justice. Also sampled the hot buttered rum, which tasted like warm, liquid cookies. GREAT spot for beer and conversation. There's a small beer garden for the summertime, but we end up here most often during the winter, enjoying some of the fabulous German beers on tap with a little popcorn and candlelight. I love stopping by Von Trier when I'm hanging out with my close friends. It is a very quiet place which is a (awesome) change of pace from the rest of North Ave. It has a very cool old German feel to it and there will not be any of those pesky under age kids, which is nice. The beer garden is cool to hang out in with a larger group, and yes the popcorn is free. The last time I went the machine was broken, but we got pretzels instead. There is never that many people here and I wouldn't come to meet people and get rowdy. But for those weekdays when I'm stressed, I grab a friend and have a drink over great conversation. The only downside is they usually don't have specials and in Milwaukee there are many places that have specials daily, even on the weekends. The beer selection is good, and they even have my favorite beloved Chicago beer 312 on tap. read more

It looks nothing like outside. Reminds me of an old world feeling. I just need to glam up and look like a heroine in the 20's movie and get my guy to dress up too with a cigar in his hand. The food is good, but I recommend looking at the menu before you go. It's pretty much just sausages, no full German dinners or anything like that. The portions are pretty small as well. We didn't stay full for very long after eating here. When you walk in, there is no host counter or sign or anything, so we stood there not knowing what to do and no one said anything to us so eventually we had to ask the bartender. You can seat yourself and sit anywhere. Service was good after our initial confusion. We would go back when we're in the mood for sausage and beer in a very casual, somewhat loud environment. read more

I love this place because it is a bar that could appeal to anybody. The atmosphere is very casual, but the drink selection is great, with lots of well-made specialty cocktails. They have a really nice outdoor patio in the summer. In the winter, I love coming here for the hot toddies, making it a perfect bar for any season. It accommodates big groups with all the extra space in the back, but it's also a great place to go to catch up with a friend. And the free popcorn is a great perk! read more

Love the selection of tap beers. Feels better giving the local guys some money than going to world of beers or any of the other chains that specialize in brews. Popcorns good too. I think it's a little pricey here and the vibe isn't really my favorite--it's a little too dark and quite for my taste but hey, for a special occasion beer or a relaxing beverage with a friend this is a go-to bar in Milwaukee's east side for a reason. read more

Yay! Von Trier reopened, cleaned up, and retains its charm. I love the beer selection (micro, import, limited domestic). They've done well including lots of bottles, too. The new bartenders and waitstaff are very friendly and make going to KVT more of an "experience" and less of bellying up to the bar. It's a great place for a date or a quiet beer with a friend or two. If you want dance music and $2 Miller taps, go elsewhere on North Ave. read more

Nice change of pace from the rest of North Ave. Great ambiance inside and a decent selection of brews. Not known so much for mixed drinks however. we must have gotten here around 7:30 and were warped back to a time when people enjoyed whittling at the hours of a gloomy saturday in a dark bar. this bar is festive, but slow paced. i'm not sure i would say, like some other reviewers, that this is THE place to go to before a raucous night of partying, but there is something sort of centering about it. and mark, the owner, was awesome. although this is the kind of place you are supposed to go to drink beer, once i tried his moscow mule, i just kept asking for more old-timey cocktail recommendations. that led to my re-discovery of the dark and stormy (who knew that drink could be delicious? the last time i had one i just about poured it under the table) and my new favorite summer cocktail: a pimm's cup. read more

I like stopping in here occasionally, nice atmosphere for a group, not too loud or a couple at the bar. Great service. Hard to find bartenders who can make a good old fashion, no worries here. They are going to start some food service and offered us a taste test of pretzels, mustards and a cheese spread. All of it outstanding. In the summer there is a nice open deck in the back.
