I was really excited to try Vong's after a friend's recommendation and purusing the menu which appeared to be full of authentic, spicy Vietnamese food. I was disappointed that Vong's no longer offers the menu page of "Vietnamese specialties" and they do NOT have Pho, despite their main photo on Yelp. They do however have Vietnamese beer and an interesting cocktail menu. This place is not only a thai restaurant, it's a very americanized version of a thai restaurant: they literally have chicken wings on the menu. Visited on a busy Saturday night in the summer, but were seated without too much delay. We ordered "stuffed chicken wings" (not to be confused with the regular american ones you can also order) which were very strange. They consisted of a ground chicken and vermecelli noodle "meatball" stuffed into the fat part of a chicken wing and then the whole thing is breaded and deep fried. I found the texture and taste very weird, but my partner liked them. For dinner, my drunken noodles were almost spicy enough, but the dish was lacking in overall sauciness and the tofu was oddly chewy and deflated, like it had been fried significantly prior to being served as a component of the dish. I though this was strange because our server made a point of telling us that our food would take a long time to prepare because everything was scratch made. More irony: My partner's massman curry was watery and the vegetables were very crisp. That dish could have used at least another 15 minutes to develop flavors and cook the contents properly. read more

Good food, liked the flavors in the mango rice, the salad and the pho. The place was busy being a Saturday night but not overly crowded with queues or wait times, however it took over an hour for the food to come. Food tasted good- flavorful, not over sauced. Service wasn't so great. The guy server looked like he just rolled out of bed. If you're in a hospitality position, you shouldn't look unkempt. Also I think halfway through our meal he just gave up on serving us? Not sure. Because the woman server started coming over and serving us. We ordered with him- I remember my husband saying white rice, but then when the woman brought our food over, it was brown rice. We were so hungry we decided not to bring it to their attention anymore. We didn't want to wait longer. But if it was anyone's fault, I'd say it was the guy's since he was the one to take the order. On our way out, the woman server said goodbye, have a nice day, etc. The guy was right there but busy on his phone. He didn't even look up and say anything. Probably the best Thai food I have eaten in a long time - possibly ever. Often I find Thai restaurants underwhelming but this was good enough that we came back twice in two days. The spicy shrimp salad (pla guong) had a sauce that was a perfectly balanced explosion of spicy, sweet, sour, and went perfectly with the shrimp and crunchy veg. The minced beef and green bean dish was also wonderfully spicy with a great depth of flavor. Even the drunken noodles, so often a disappointment, were superb. And such friendly service! While I thoroughly enjoyed the beef noodle soup, I think I was the winner. No one else enjoyed their food (which included vegetarian pad Thai, regular pad Thai, and spring rolls). This place did not cater well to vegetarians (despite the large vegetarian section on the menu) as we kept running into fish sauce and things fried in vats of oil that had been cooked with meat. Really surprised and disappointed. The best part was, at the end, they forgot my beer order. I ended up drinking my husband's. And in the end, he was barely able to eat a thing. This was my second visit to this little establishment. The 1st dining experience was ok. I had the spring rolls for an appetizer, as well as a house salad. The house salad was fresh but underwhelming. The spring rolls tasted like they came out of a box. I asked if they were made fresh, on premise, and was told with enthusiasm that EVERYTHING is made fresh, in house. NOT. The fried rice proved to be delicious, and the chicken on skewers were good. The problem, which developed a little later in the evening, was a nasty reaction to MSG or some other flavor enhancer used in the food, which I have a long allergy history with. SO, I took a chance to try again, and sample some other dishes, and with great communication, explained to the woman who services the bar area, that I have this allergy, which makes my evening and following day very hard to deal with due to this lovely poison of enhanced flavor product problem. I clearly explained that I had the reaction last week at the restaurant, but would like to try to dine there again if they would accommodate my meals without the product involved. The service provider explained everything thoroughly and succinctly as to how and where/in what dishes/soups they use the MSG, as well as another product named "Knor", that I wasn't familiar with. She spoke with knowledge and I felt relieved. Well, all of that was BS, hogwash and pure lying on her/their part. I have had an even worse reaction then last week, body, hands, feet, eyes, etc, so swollen that I feel sick. Lethargic, bleary headed, etc, which is a direct reaction to any flavor enhancer I ingest period. I was so excited to have possibly found a restaurant that would actually understand my plight, and the reason why I very rarely dine out anywhere because of this horrible fake flavoring usage. This is why the dishes, which I ordered quite a few of, (to take home leftovers!) are soooooo good. Not from great cooking, but from artificial flavoring !!! I am so disappointed in the lack of understanding and the obvious and intentional disregard/disrespect of my request. Had the chicken pho and my aunt had the steak pho - it was her first time and she was a little turned off by how large the steak pieces were (it was a little weird). Have to fight for a table during dinner. Staff running around doing everything under the sun. The staff didn't seem to have defined roles/know what they should be doing. For example, they Desperately need a hostess to help figure out what to do with the mass of people waiting. Once we were seated, we seemed to be sitting in a void. Had to ask at the bar for a waiter.
