In the heart of Pittsfield, Massachusetts is this cute low key vegetarian/vegan diner. It's located near BMC so convenient for a lunch spot. I've visited this location 6 times so I have a good feel on the environment. It has all the diner feels. The diner is an old train car turned eatery. It's a 1936 sterling train car diner. The inside is small with 8 booths, 1 table, and diner countertop seating. The inside was clean and organized. The inside has A/C and clean bathrooms. The food was great. I've had the bang bang cauliflower wings (my favorite), BBQ cauliflower wings, southwest bowl, sweet potato fries, Fresh natural soda (blueberry my favorite) and dessert chocolate chip cookie and oatmeal raisin cookie (my favorite). The service has been great! I usually have PJ as my server and honestly he seems to run the front of the house and does a phenomenal job. He is calm, collective, knowledgeable and attentive! Out of my six visits only once did it really seem like chaos but PJ wasn't there the kitchen ran out of stuff, kitchen seem to be crazy and the dining area too! True to my word, I stopped in for lunch at The Thrive Diner when visiting in December. 7 months from my first visits since I live in LA, Thrive definitely did not disappoint! Cute place that uses an old train car as its dining area. It has about 8-10 booths and counter seats and has that diner feel. The menu is a mix of Buddha bowls, sandwiches and apps. All of it is plant-based. We tried their Mediterranean bowl and their sesame noodle bowl. The bowls also include a salad with fresh dressing. (I tried their fiery fig dressing. Both were delicious and full of flavor. They were a decent size, and I ended up packing some of my sesame noodles to bring home. When we walked in, it had one server for the whole place. Impressively, he was able to handle it all well. Of note: They make sure to tell you that everyone who works there makes above minimum wage and then shares the mandatory 20% charger (which they don't call a service charge). read more

I'm still really impressed with Thrive and continue to come back for more! While staying at a resort for a week of hiking, shopping, and relaxing poolside in the Berkshires I finally had an opportunity to bring my wife to Thrive. We stopped in Wednesday evening around 5:30pm to catch dinner. During our visit we ordered two iced teas, and started out with a Crabby Cakes appetizer. The artichoke based cakes were seasoned perfectly, had a light sear on both sides, and were served with house made Thousand Island dressing. Next was our main course. My wife ordered the tofu tacos with barbecue sauce. She received three stuffed corn tortillas brimming with lightly breaded tofu chunks tossed in BBQ sauce and topped with fresh lettuce, cheese, and tomato. She ordered a side of fresh cut French fries but later said she'd should have ordered the rice and beans. I ordered a Reuben and in house made soy curl chick'n soup which was my backup side since my wife had already ordered the fries. The soup hit the spot and paired well with the greasy (appropriately) Reuben. Near the end of the meal we were offered a refill on our iced tea but instead we ordered a slice of Lemon cake to go. The experience Wednesday evening was so good the next day we ordered an entire takeout meal for our drive home. The fig and olive tapenade comes with four crostini, Buffalo cauliflower with celery, carrots, and house made blue cheez, the loaded potato bowl, and a tofu bacon BLT rounded out our order. Missing an opportunity the previous day I asked for rice and beans with the BLT. I was pleasantly surprised with the smokey, flavorful, and generous portion of the side. All menu items on the second day were delicious but I highly recommend the tapenade for a salty but sweet taste experience as well as the tofu bacon on the BLT exceeded my expectations. read more

We were driving south from the Lake Champlain area and not finding anything especially vegan-friendly along the way. So when this popped up on Yelp, just a minute off Route 7, we charted a course for it. It turned out to be a lucky decision. We were charmed by the real-life 1930s diner car like I remember from my childhood in NJ. We slid into a booth, then ordered fries and a couple of veggie bowls. The food was tasty, and the person working was nice and attentive. The prices seemed slightly high, but to be fair that's everywhere these days. Be aware it has very limited opening days/hours. Having lived in Florida for 3 years, we got so used to the Farmacy and their vegan cuisine that we use them as the measuring line for every other Vegan Style restaurant and Thrive just didn't measure up. The fries were cold, the Italian sausage overcooked and my wife's Southwest Buddha Bowl was on the bland side. I wish I was able to find a saving grace for them but they weren't crowded and they weren't busy so I cannot excuse the inexcusable. Update In response to the owner of the establishment that responded to my review, the 45 minutes later does NOT mean that we waited 45 minutes for our food, it simply refers to the time it took my wife and I to sit in our car OUTSIDE of thrive and sanitize our hands, pray and eat our food... OUTSIDE of the restaurant in our car, I repeat. There are times I write my review while eating but I chose NOT to do that this time. I ate first and then finished my review. Again, I cannot and will not excuse the inexcusable, part of serving good food is good service and seldom is there one without the other. I am a stickler for quality customer service and how my wife is treated by a restaurant's staff is a definite factor in my reviews. I stand by the accuracy and validity of my review. Glad to see a vegetarian restaurant but likely wouldn't go back. The noodle bowl (small) with veggies had almost no veggies mostly very spicy kale salad which mixed nicely with the plain noodles. But I am still very hungry. The small portion of fried cauliflower and tofu were good but the value of almost $60 is definitely far off for this small amount of food. Thrive has a wonderful menu - so far I've tried their Rueben (I like to try every Rueben from every vegan place and this was one of my favorites) with their iced chai tea (omg!) and their creamy tahini pasta and almond parm cauliflower with their sweet strawberry rose water (I'm not a big fan of seltzer or bubbly drinks so the option for water was perfect for me and this drink was delicious!) though it's over an hour drive for me, I consider it worth it, though I do find other ways to make use of my gas money in the area. As the premier all-vegan restaurant in the Berkshires, we plan to patronize Thrive again and again. Great food, friendly staff. Now, here are some suggestions for making a great place even better: 1) Please shell out for an ad-free music service. Consciousness is the commodity of our time, and we ought not to be "taxed" by Pandora ads while eating a fully paid meal. 2) I realize this is a matter of aesthetic tastes, but I felt the 1970s rock music Pandora channel (Eagles, etc.) was pretty off-putting and loud. The over-laid lyrics kind of interfere with our conversation. I personally prefer that the music were either: A) Had no lyrics (electronica, techno, ambient, vocalless world folk instrumentals, etc.), and/or B) Was all period music from the 1930s, to match the dinner's ambience. 3) Small suggestion: offer to heat up the cookies. 4) Please ad some kind(s) of cold mylk drink to the menu, to go with the cookies! Even just plain sweetened soy milk would be fine. Soda pop or tea with cookies, just doesn't cut it. 5) Please revise the wording of the menu with regard to the sides for the sandwiches. Currently, the menu says: "ALL BELOW served with CHOICE of: soup or fries (rice & beans or spicy kale slaw +2 or house salad +4)". Which they mean to say: "ALL BELOW served with CHOICE of soup or fries; OR substitute side of rice & beans for +$2; OR substitute house salad for +$4.)" We felt that they had mistakenly overcharged us, because the wording of the menu is ambiguous, and seems to say that soup or fries are a given, and if you'd ALSO like some rice & beans or salad (in addition to the soup or fries) that's just an add-on fee of $2 or $4. So we surprised and unhappy to that we were charged full price for the house salad ($8.50). Or, even better...reduce the side item portions so that they are all included in the basic price of the sandwich: "ALL BELOW served with choice of soup or fries or rice & beans [a small portion] or side salad [half the size of the House Salad]." This change in wording would reduce chances of confusion and dissonance. Thank you! Like we said though: Those are not huge problems -- we plan to regularly patronize Thrive. We love it! Amazing experience!! The servers were so kind and welcoming, they immediately sat us upon arrival. The menu was so good- so many options for everyone in our family. We ordered the fried cauliflower with amazing marinara sauce. I got the Southwest bowl- it had the perfect flavors and combinations. The hibiscus iced tea was also great. Don't eat here, I don't want the place to get busier. THE FOOD IS FANTASTIC! Remember your going into a small diner atmosphere with an owner who's hands-on, working her ass off. That's what makes the food so amazing! EDIT After being contacted by the owner, I'm guessing, this review gets ONE start. I find it extremely rude for an owner/employee to laugh at a review of a dissatisfied customer. Then to state that the customer had a bad day and that's the reason I didn't care for the food served (doesn't makes sense). The owner/employees need to work on their customer service skills. As stated to the owner I will not return or recommend this place to anyone rather warn people. I don't care if I'm the only bad review (probably the only review out of town) I love good vegan food and this place did not meet my expectations. By the way, the weird smell has since dissipated. So I wanted to give the non buddha bowl items another try. Sometimes we crave the vegan guilty pleasures like the beyond burger and cheesecake. These dishes were a good effort. I think the cheese sauce is used too liberally which disappoints the fresh ingredients accompanying the patty, sausage and other dishes. There is a saying that cheese makes everything better, but I wouldn't take it to this level with a cheese alternative. The soup was flavorless and microwaved as I could tell by the heat marks on the bowl left by the soup. There is much more craft and quality in the buddha bowls. If you just need that vegan alternative diner food fix, as we all do sometimes, I think you'll be satisfied with that menu. However, I think a much better job could be done on these simple menu items, and if done would keep Thrive Diner competitive as a vegan establishment. There's fierce competition nearby. read more
