Kernville was wall-to-wall people everyone enjoying the Mountains, sunshine, Kern, river, and America's 250th birthday. James store was busy as might be expected on the big holiday weekend. I headed to the meat department too many choices. I decided on 2 habanero and 2 black pepper chicken kebabs to barbecue and a 6 pack of carnation drumsticks for dessert. The store looked great decorated and fully stocked they were ready for 4 July holiday. Shelly my cashier was super, all check stands were open very little waiting. Bodfish!…read more Bodfish??? What the hell is a "Bodfish"? Well folks, turns out it's a "census-designated place" (not even a town, how about that!!) near Lake Isabella with a population of just 1956, as of the 2010 Census. If you're still lost, it's approximately 32 miles (That's ALL it was?) east-northeast of Bakersfield, up in the mountains. Now I'm sure you are asking "what were you doing there?" Yes I was wondering the same thing. LOL I went to look at (and buy) a vintage washing machine and this is where it was... out in the boonies! My daughter got addicted to this place on a recent camping trip…read more It all started when my daughter went shopping during the day while most of our group was out risking our lives white water rafting. When we came back I could see something had changed in her. Instantly she starts to tell the group about this coffee spot she found. She started mumbling something about going back. It was her wide open eyes when she spoke that threw up the most curiosity. We agreed to have their coffee the next morning. She was bummed out and continued to bring up that place several more times that night. The next morning we sent a few from our group to go and get coffee for our large group. When they returned my daughter was thrilled. We all tried our different coffees and sampled some of the others and none of them tasted bad, even the caramel one was ok. That's right caramel is not a tasty drink, I said it. I drove by the place and it looked nice and clean but I never stepped in or encountered any employees. I just really enjoyed the coffees I tried but thank goodness I didn't get addicted like my poor daughter.

Let me start by saying I grew up in Glennville. It's always been a quiet town and this it's only…read moremarket. It was started by a man named Hassan back in the day and he was connected to his community and its needs. The new owners of the market have driven prices sky high, $4 for a monster energy drink when you can drive to town and get 4 for $6, and have absolutely no interest in being connected to the community. The business owner always smells heavily of Pot and I've also seen grown men wrestling on the floor at times. No one ever greets you or dusts the shelves and the business is far from what I remember. I find it sad that the new owners don't realize a connection with the community is both beneficial and necessary. We'll be taking our business elsewhere.
