The workmanship at Voorthuis Opticians has significantly deteriorated recently, in my experience. I had bought eyeglasses there for all of the people in my family for more than 40 years, so I was very surprised by the poor quality of the lenses I bought there in 2022. The glasses I bought in 2022 quickly began accumulating scratches on the lenses, despite the fact that they had been treated with a scratch-resistant coating and I always handled the glasses carefully. I have been wearing eyeglasses for more than 40 years and I have never had this happen to any other lenses. When I went back to Voorthuis to show them the excessive scratches, I also brought my previous glasses to show them; I had worn those previous glasses for 6 years and there were no scratches on them. The salesperson at Voorthuis was not interested in seeing them, and did not offer to repair or replace the scratched lenses on my current lenses. The important point, however, is that there is something clearly wrong with the scratch-resistant coating on these lenses and Voorthuis did not seem to care, either about correcting my lenses or investigating what is going wrong with their manufacturing process. read more

As I worked on my goal to see the world in focus once again, and as that other shop booted me with a pair of uncut lenses, and not much more, I ventured forward and upward and ended up here. The first question I asked them: "What is your policy regarding a purchase that turns out to be problematic for the customer - I'm not talking about a fashionable mishap, but something more serious, as in the frames purchased feel like razors slicing into your skin, behind the ear?" They were somewhat taken aback by the question and fumbled for a bit, but generally, they do not provide refunds, but under the circumstances ... We moved on. I told them I had a pair of frames and a pair of uncut lenses that needed to be cut to the frames. I handed him the lenses, which were in that little bag, and began opening the box with the frames from Cutler and Gross. Not only had Cutler and Gross packed them in a box with ample room, but they had sealed the box with heavy-duty tape that required the use of a single-edged razor blade to open it. That's what you call secure packaging. The cost of cutting the lenses would be $50, which brought the cost of the entire vision ensemble closer to a $1000, than not, but which I would gladly pay for. It was time to put the world before me in focus once more. It would take 60 minutes to complete the process, and as I was in no hurry to go anywhere, and as Westfield Shopping Mall in Bethesda has plenty of diversions, I was totally cool with that. They would call me when they were done. When I returned to pick up my glasses, that's when we got into the nuts and bolts of how a business treats its customers, and what is the most prudent approach. Does the business argue with the customer? No. Does the business harass the customer? No. Does the business put a plate of excuses before you, as to why they just don't have it in them, to make you a satisfied customer? No. "So tell me," I said to the man. "What is more prudent? Losing a customer, or absorbing the cost, and leaving a customer delighted with your services, returning again and again, because the quality of the product and service is so outstanding?" I brought my prescription here and ordered a pair of glasses. The customer service was great! The man who helped me pick out a pair of frames was very helpful and brought things out for me to try based on my preferences and feedback. My only complaint is that they're pricey compared to other lens shops, but I could tell the quality was better and I liked their frames a lot more than other shops in the mall. Expect knowledgeable, well spoken sales people who are well versed in taking care of clients. Comfortable chairs, beautiful displays, no crowds, and a fabulous collection of the elite eyewear designers define this spot. Prices are similar to if not better than Lenscrafters for lenses alone, while the frame selection is definitely a step above what is normally found in a mall. Was assisted by Andre who is not only an exceptional customer service professional but is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the eye-wear in the store. He began by asking me a few questions about what I was looking for in a new frame and suggested a few pairs for me to try on. He provided feedback as to why each frame looked good on me (or, perhaps more importantly, didn't look so good) and on the quality of each frame. Andre also walked me through his selection of lenses and coatings. He explained that he was selecting a higher index lens due to my stronger prescription, but not the highest index since that wouldn't offer much of an improvement for the additional cost. He also recommended against edge polishing for the translucent frame I had picked out, saying that this would bring in excess light into the lens and lead to additional glare when outdoors. It's rare in the customer service industry to experience such honesty and professionalism, not just someone who wants to sell whatever for as much as possible. In the end, I didn't end up purchasing the frame as they didn't take my vision insurance (VSP) and the same frame was about 50% less with my insurance through my optician. Overall, Voorthuis Opticians has a great selection of high quality frames, high quality lens options, and expert staff. Without vision insurance, I would come back here in a heartbeat. read more

I've been a customer of Voorthuis since 1998 but after the insulting treatment I received today I will be on the market for another place to get my exams and buy eyeglasses. I was excited to see a pair of Tom Ford frames and went into the shop to try them on. A red headed clerk bolstered for me to stop and not try on frames without someone standing there. She treated me as if I was about to steal the frames. I was very insulted and embarrassed because she yelled across the store which was full of customers. She told me to "come out from behind the counter". I didn't realize there was a counter or that I had to ask for a clerk to get every pair of frames I wanted to try on. All the other times I've bought frames from them (in the upwards of $500, I might add) I was allowed to roam around and try them on. Her unprofessionalism lost the business of my entire glasses wearing family. I told her that I'd take my business elsewhere and her reply was a loud and snarky, "that's fine". I came here as I was shopping for new glasses. The name is kinda funny and then I was told they were fee for service and couldn't use my insurance so I was off out at first. But I had been to a fee for service dental office and it was really good, above normal service, so I decided to do it. The lady who scheduled my appointment was very good and knowledgable and so was the follow up staff to follow up my appointment I scheduled wth Dr Robinson on Black Friday Novemebrr 27th at 7pm- 7 pm! Anyways, I saw Dr Robinson and she was awesome. I had never had that much X attention and concern and testing as I did with the comprehensive glasses exam I got. Both my husband and I see Dr. Robinson and cannot say enough about her knowledge and dedication. In this day and age when all too often medicine is more about the business than the patient, Dr. Robinson shows nothing but care and concern as she brings her incredible expertise to the evaluation and treatment of her patients. She not only does the most meticulous evaluation to determine the best prescription for lenses I have ever had, but she remembers each patient and their specific concerns and has repeatedly gone above and beyond, contacting other specialists when needed and personally following up until the issue has been resolved. I was hesitant to go somewhere other than LensCrafters, only because that's really the only place I've ever gone before, but I was ready for a change. When my husband and I first walked in, just browsing, we were greeted and helped by a friendly employee. He was knowledgable and super helpful, which led to us coming back again to look more seriously. All of the glasses are kept in glass cases or behind the counters. This was a turn off for me initially because I've always just enjoyed the privacy of being able to pick out and try on whatever frames I wanted. I gave it a chance, though, and everyone was helpful and super patient, handing me whichever ones I pointed at to try on. The employees even gave their input on how the frames fit my face which was helpful! I was seriously interested in 2 pair (that I discovered over two different trips into the store) and each time, they wrote all the info down on a business card so I could have the model # and brand name of the frames, as well as a quotation for lenses. When I came in to purchase my glasses, they told me it'd take 3-4 business days, but guess what?! They were ready the next day! Just by coincidence, they had my +4.25 RX high index lenses in stock. They cut them at the store to fit the frames. Boom! Less than 24 hours later I'm in my new pair of eyeballs =) They do NOT accept insurance at this store but do provide an itemized receipt to submit to insurance for reimbursement. We were pleasantly surprised and are already planning our next trip back because I've fallen in love with a minimum of 6 pairs of sunglasses! :) read more

Went to get my eye retested for a new prescription and the Dr was very thorough, clear and transparent about what she was doing.

Please think more than twice before going to this place! And even if you decide to go despite my advices, make sure you compare prices : they are very expensive when it is even lower quality frames! You do not have to believe me but just spare sometime to do your due diligence and check just next door! Fake frames that are too expensive. I bought my glasses at Voorthuis Montgomery Mall, Bethesda in Maryland a year and few months ago, to later discover that the same frames were available at the same mall for less! But the worse was even ahead because I had to go back there more than 5 times for a broken piece: guess what! Not only did you pay too much in the first place, but they want you to pay each time! Well, you get what you pay for. I went to Voorthuis needing a new pair of glasses since I had broken mine. Donna was wonderful - she quickly suggested styles that would look good on me, and I ended up buying a pair that I never would have looked at on my own but which looks great. They a good selection of high end frames, so you should be able to find something that will suit you. I needed a rush since I was traveling, and Donna promised to do everything she could to get the pair in before my trip. As promised, the glasses were back, the lenses were perfect, and I was on my way. If you are looking for inexpensive glasses, this is not the place. Nep is absolutely the best eyeglass specialist EVER. I actually purchased my glasses from the Old Town (Alexandria) store and was extremely disappointed in the service (I was sold glasses that did not fit well and were not adjusted properly once I received them). Nep took half an hour of his time to adjust my glasses and he did a fantastic job. Don't go to any other location. Jody, the woman who helped me find my glasses, answer my questions, and fix problems that Hour Eyes created for me, is amazing. She is so patient, and so helpful, it's incredible. She played middle man with Hour Eyes, trying to get my prescription information, only to find out Hour Eyes had written down the incorrect prescription last year. She was great in working through that issue, and I would definitely go back to see her in this office. read more

The only reason they get one star is because the doctor was nice. I had and exam, and bought 2 pairs of glasses. I paid extra for the no scratch frames. No only did they scratch, but they dulled. In the same was as plastic, getting that dull film on them. When I bright them back they said there was nothing they could do. They offered no help. read more

I had called to have my ear piece tightened, and spoke to Margie. I told her that another associate had helped me before, and that I thought highly of her. Her comment to me was, "Who, the fat one?" To me, that was NOT very proffessional at all. I also work in customer service and wait on "fat, skinny, ugly", etc people, but I DO NOT comment to other customers about others OR my fellow co-workers to ANYONE!!! How I feel about the people I work with or anyone else. In all honesty, I refuse to go into that store unless the red haired lady is working there. I have been wearing glasses since I was 3 years old, and today at age 50, I have a very complicated prescription. After having my prescription filled I often have to return the new glasses because I cannot see clearly. Once I started seeing Dr. Gail Robinson at Voorthuis Opticians all of that ended! Dr. Robinson provides me the most thorough eye exam I have ever received. This a very important for me because I have health conditions which can be very damaging to my eyes, but Dr. Robinson monitors this very closely and talks to me about concerns and any changes that I need to be aware of. If there were no stars, they deserve it. I went yesterday to buy glasses and sunglasses and the woman behind the counter was NASTY. I have never been treated so poorly trying to spend over $1000 between both frames and lens. I was looking at the back wall and she yelled at me in a very abusive manner saying I cannot be back there and had to wait for the other gentleman to come back. She said I could not pick out my own glasses (she was picking them out for another customer going on and on about her likes and what was best for her rather than the customer) and wasting a lot of time on unnecessary chatter. I told her I liked to pick my own frames, did not have time to wait for the other staff and she was being unreasonable. She continued in a raised voice and I told her that is was too bad she was running out customers in such an abusive manner who would spend a good amount of money purchasing glasses. I'll go back to Moda Optical in Rockville where we always get great service. I was just looking for something a bit different. Overpriced and condescending. I popped back in to get a nose pad replaced and frames adjusted after being a customer for several years. The woman who made the adjustment badly scratched the lens and just blew it off. Not interested in giving them my future business. In addition to being brilliant at her field, you really feel that she cares about you and your vision. I had had my glasses and sunglasses adjusted at another Bethesda optical shop. They were adjusted so poorly that they were unwearable--my ears were practically raw within 10 minutes. I went to Voorthuis at Montgomery Mall and had the good fortune to meet an expert optician who was happy to help me, Donna Bermanis. This despite the fact that I had not purchased either pair from them. She was AMAZING! She spent 10 minutes or so adjusting both pairs and redid them until they were perfect. And she was a total pleasure to deal with. I will definitely return to this store and to Donna to purchase my glasses from now on. read more

i took a pair of sunglasses into the Bethesda location to have the lenses removed and replaced with clear prescription lenses. I was assisted by Lewis (a black male) and had no problem with the service. When I returned two days later to pick up the glasses, Dan (a white male) assisted me. The sunglass lenses had been replaced with prescription sunglass lenses so I explained to Dan that maybe I hadn't been clear on my expectations, I would pay whatever the difference was to have the glasses fixed to my liking. Dan told me there was no additional cost, they may owe me a refund and he'd have them fixed.........no problem,. Before leaving, Dan says to me, "maybe we need to tell Lewis to lay off the kool aide". As a black female, I found the comment insulting, racist, and totally unprofessional. I talked to the manager on duty, Mep, who focused on the glasses being wrong instead of Dan's totally inappropriate comments. I requested a full refund, because I refuse to spend my money in a place where the staff or management think its okay to use racially insulting comments when speaking to its clients. Mep asked me to give him until the following Monday to respond to my refund request. I waited all day on Monday and received no call. Around the end of the day I called the main office and spoke to the manager. She refused to refund my money and told me that Mep and Dan were talking to each other so I shouldnt have had a problem with the comment. I had to tell her 3x that Dan was talking directly to me and that I work as an office manager at a law firm and I would pursue the appropriate legal channels if my frames and money weren't returned before she finally agreed to issue the refund. I ordered my glasses from Mr. Neptali, the manager. He took time with me and assured me if anything is not right they will make it right. This man is so knowledgeable and so fair--he really is ALL about the customer. I don't think i would ever go anywhere else after experiencing the service in this place.
