The minute I walked in everything felt so homey. It really feels like a family is welcoming you into their home. Service was excellent. We came for lunch and they weren't super busy, but still had tables filled. I ordered the gyro which didn't feel super heavy and didn't rely too much on the sauce like other gyros I've tried. A little slice of heaven in my neighborhood. My grandson looked for somewhere close for lunch. Greek sounded good and we found the cutest place right on merchant Road. We knew it must be good because of all the cars in the parking lot. We got the last spot and we ate at the lunch counter as all the tables were taken. I have been a customer of Voula's for many years. The new location is amazing, roomy, big windows and even better, a parking lot. Her staff is always welcoming. Voula's is like going into Yaya's home! Metal kitchen tables from the 50's with mismatched chairs and a large incredible dessert/savory pastry case of delectable foods and treats. We went for brunch. I had The Morningstar: Two eggs scrambled with feta, a piece of their crispy spanakopita and lemon potatoes. My sisters had the Mt. Olympus Plate: a pile of lemon potatoes sautéed with spinach and topped with two eggs of your choice, and perfectly seasoned lentils, topped with broiled tomato slices. They loved it! We had galaktobureko, a wonderful filo with creamy semolina custard baked between the top and bottom layer and topped with a sweet citrus infused syrup. Just divine. Visited this restaurant after shopping at the Public Market. We needed brunch and vegan options and Voula's did not disappoint. This was my 1st visit there however it wasn't for my youngest. They have dined here several times. The service staff were kind, pleasant and encourages us to take our time and ask questions about the menu options. Voula's serve authentic greek cuisine. The pastry counter alone looked amazing. One needed serveral minutes to review the menu to determine the brunch choices. The current location is quite small but I loved the mismatched dishes table setting etc. It all reminded me of my Grandma and that's always nice. Both of the entrees we choose were flavorful and deliciuos. The only complaint was it took longer to be served than expected but the food was amazingly good which made up for the wait. The desserts were delicious and had many vegan options which is a bonus because restaurants usually don't have any dessert options for people who are vegan. I came to Voula's on Friday around 1:30-ish. It's a small place, tucked away in between the gas station and a couple other stores - there's a sign on the sidewalk for it but it can be easy to miss. Parking is decent, there's a small lot right in front of it. The place is really cutely decorated too, with merch you can purchase on the sides and such. There's an array of Greek baked goods to choose from, all of which looked amazing. It was hard for me to choose, but I ended up going for the (limited) Revani Cake, Kariokes, Galaktoboureko, and Portokalopita. My favorites were definitely the Revani Cake and the Portokalopita. The syrup soaks through in each of the cakes and it's so good!! The woman working behind the counter was very nice and packaged my goods neatly with the signature bow. Parking in the rear was cramped. The inside of the place consists of tables and chairs that appear bought at Goodwill. Here and there is a cheap Greek vase and a wall hanging to give the place 'atmosphere.' I ordered something called a tria nissia. Great description on the menu, but--after waiting nearly a half hour--what I got were three small poorly cooked eggs on a naan so old and dry the knife couldn't cut it. Too much feta on top added to the frankly lousy flavor. The best thing about the meal was the water I drank to wash it down. My date got something that looked like potatoes with lemon juice, and a desert. Needless to say, the whole unpleasant meal, and experience, cost over fifty bucks. The spread we got with this was Skordalia (v, gf) Blanched almonds, garlic, russet potato. It was all fresh and delicious, salty, savory and filling. For my main I got some Spanakopita a spinach and cheese, onion filled phyllo like savory pastry and I got an iced tea. He got a coffee and Horiatiki Salad (vo, gfo) Vine tomato, cucumber, red onion, bell pepper, kalamata olives tossed in extra virgin Greek olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano. I came here for brunch twice in two days, so I was able to delve pretty deeply into the vegan options on the menu, and I have a ton of good things to say. Here's the run-down of everything I tried: - Three spreads appetizer: definitely start with this! The hummus and the vegan kafteri (an insanely tasty orange dip traditionally made with feta) were my favorites. The skordalia (garlic/potato spread) was also good. Comes with super tasty flatbread brushed with olive oil (lagana) and some fresh veggies. - Lentil soup: it's perfect. Tomatoey, hearty, and delicious. Get yourself a side of it if your dish doesn't come with it. - Vegan French toast: out of this world. Possibly the best thing on the menu. It's made with hearty thick slices of cinnamon bread pan-toasted to crisp perfection and drizzled with rosewater syrup and cinnamon. Wow. Better than any other French toast I've had, vegan or not. - Gyro sandwich with housemade seitan: incredible. It's served on the freshest most delicious flatbread. The crisp-yet-chewy seitan comes together perfectly with the fresh veggies and a little skordalia (garlic spread). Hefty and delicious. Would be a great takeout option also. - Greek salad: excellent. The vegan feta is super fun, and the Kalamata olives are delicious - Dolmades - yum - Vegan spanakopita: good but not as mind-blowing as a lot of their other dishes - Gythio plate, vegan version: awesome. It's a combination of three of my favorite items: lemon potatoes, tofu scramble, and lentils. - Vegan melomakarona (semolina cookie): sooo good. Perfect texture. - Vegan kourambiedes (almond cookie with powdered sugar): incredible. - Vegan baklava: very good but honestly not as good as the cookies! - Vegan pourakia (chocolate-covered baklava log with dried cranberries) and vegan saragli (baklava log drizzled with chocolate): both good - Greek mountain tea: super medicinal tasting, probably wouldn't get it again although it's supposed to be super healthy - Love that they have local kombucha available in their fridge! Some options from both Katboocha and Happy Gut. Awesome. Overall everything was DELICIOUS. Love that they are all vegetarian and mostly vegan (at least, mostly everything can be made vegan upon request). I also appreciated the really friendly and great service. I've had this spot in my bookmarks for about three years now and decided after a day of kayaking - it was finally time! We have a ton of amazing Med food in Rochester and Voula's is up there on that list. I need to go back and try some of their sweets and desserts as well. My gyro plate was very good, and it came with one of the best and most fresh greek salads I've ever had. Their lemon potatoes are delightful and the gyro "meat" is so salty and flavorful. We love Voula's in this household! We have been here twice for takeout, and both times it is so so good. My mom and I both love their Gyro Plate! It has house-made seitan gyro meat, lemon potatoes, Greek salad, tzatziki, and crostini toasts. So, so good! Their lemon potatoes are delicious and never disappoint. First, I would like to start by saying that the reason for coming to this restaurant was to try out their vegan food. My focus as of late is to incorporate more plant-based food in my diet. A vegan friend of mine highly recommended Voula's and boasted about their lemon potatoes. This visit became a dumpster fire from the start. Though he was very nice, the gentleman at the front took my name down and said we were next in line with about a 15 minute wait. Now, I understand that some people might be at their table longer, so 15 minutes is just an estimate. However, in the time that I was there, two separate people came in and got tables before us. I tried to brush it off thinking that it was just that they were on the list prior, but when looking at it when first speaking with the gentleman, all names were crossed off except ours, which was just added at that point. For one of the tables that showed up randomly, the server seemed to be very chummy with them, which gave me the impression that they actually were snuck in there being that they might be friends or family. Definitely a red flag but I was starving and already put in my time waiting so I rather stay and get a table. It was either that or deal with waiting elsewhere. Then there is the woman with the star-shaped stickers on her face. When I asked her about when we will be seated as we were advised that we were next, she became aggressive and defensive. Claiming that the gentleman was new on his first day and that he should have said that to us as there were several people before us. It was as if her anger was directed towards me when all I was doing was relaying what I was told. I'm normally an understanding person but she was pissed at me for some reason. Maybe I could have asked questions and wasn't patient but in my defense, we were there at least 30+ min when I finally asked. I eventually debated leaving, but again I was starving and already put in almost an hour. Thankfully that is when I got a call and was seated By the time we finally did get a seat, I was already not feeling the place and still just figured the food will redeem them. The food was okay but I think I was just upset, so I couldn't really enjoy it. So I can't even give an honest review about their food which is the purpose of why I would normally do a review on Yelp. Then I was thinking it was just me or maybe she's having a bad day. I was wrong. When we got to the register, I swear she was just giving me the evil eye the whole time. Then I stupidly gave a 15% tip when I should have said none. I genuinely hesitated giving anything but I tried to remind myself that servers get low pay and they pretty much live on tips. So regardless of how much of an unprofessional employee she was, I still provided a tip. This has made me really question whether to return here because if this is how I'm going to be treated on day one, then I can definitely bring my money and my reviews elsewhere for those who are more deserving. Maybe in time I'll give this place a second chance but it may be a while as I did not feel like it was worth my time, my money, and certainly not a Yelp Award. My opinion may be unpopular compared to the experiences others had but I know good customer service when I see it and Voula's was lacking. read more
