Efficient service, open spaced, limited guardrails / etc., ample parking, few amenities (no F&B), limited bathroom options, and generally gets the job done when you want to go from point A to point B. So not much (except ample parking) if you are expecting to grab a bite, etc. (although plenty of options in the neighborhood). Also, like many places in the U.S. the station may seem relatively understaffed. Other than that, trains themselves are often much more spacious, roomy, and sometimes just plain empty compared to elsewhere in the world.

Thought I would share some tips for someone who doesn't ride frequently. 1.) Clipper If you use a Clipper Card, when you tag in, it will charge you the FULL AMOUNT first. Once you tag out, it will "refund" you the difference. Example: Origin Station (Tag in) = San Francisco = Charge $14.70 Destination Station (Tag Out) = Sunnyvale = Refund $6.75 Total = $7.95 I was really confused by this at first since this is not how BART works where there is no charge at first and a charge after you exit. I definitely messed this up and even had to call Clipper customer service to help me fix one of my rides. 2.) Parking I thought there was ample parking at the station when I went but other reviews says it's difficult. I didn't have any issues here. 3.) Cleanliness For some reason this station was pretty dirty. There were homeless remnants (beds, alcohol, clothes) all over the elevators and trashcans that it felt kind of unsafe. However, when you get to the tracks with the other riders, it was much better. 4.) No Shade This station has like zero shade. You might find some minimal shade in places but it's virtually zero. Wear a hat, sunscreen, or even use an umbrella to block out the sun or rain if its raining.

One of the best things about the train is seeing all of the little towns along the tracks. One of my favorites is Mountain View. The train station is on the edge of a busy downtown street lined with shops, restaurants and interesting people. Step off the train and you're right in the heart of the action. There's plenty of parking and getting to either side of the tracks to access the north or southbound trains is super easy. It's also at the transit center so you can also take local buses and the Amtrak trains. There is a parking lot on-site where you can park and ride for $5.50 all day. Depending on which zone you're getting on and off will determine the price that you pay. Just remember that you need to pay before you board. You can scan your Clipper card at their kiosks or buy one on-site. Pro tip: if you have an iPhone you can set up a digital transit card and refill your transit card with your credit card. If you're going northbound you'll have to go under the tunnel to get to the right platform. This is a pretty big station and was pretty clean.

The parlor car offered spacious, comfortable seating, VIP time with Santa Claus, a hot adult beverage, or nonalcoholic version, bottled water, snacks, Christmas cookies, and a great narrative of the ride. You're also allowed to walk the length of the train, but you need to have a wristband so you can get back into the parlor car area. Be prepared for lots of traffic as you drive to the train station from other parts of the Bay Area. Traffic is bad during the winter if not always. The train leaves right on time so you do not want to be late. Also, the railroad provides very detailed and helpful instructions about how to get to the depot and how to navigate the parking and other systems. They have outside train cars and inside train cars so you can choose what type of seat you want. This is definitely been worth the money and should become a holiday.

Lawrence station is a quieter spot compares to Sunnyvale and since I'm within a 10 min walk from here this is my go-to stop. The drawback is, however, Caltrain has cancelled stops on this station on some weekends due to maintenance/repairs. That is a tad annoying, but not like it's the end-of-the-world or anything. I prefer riding Caltrains over BART because their cars are cleaner, even the toilets aren't disastrous monstrosities. And, with my employer issued Clipper Card, i get 50% off on Caltrains but only 20% on BART. Boo hiss BART.

Palo Alto station has decent parking and close to downtown Palo Alto, so it's about a 5 minute walk from food and drinks. The station connects to Standford shuttles which are free if you're headed to Standford campus or hospital,Sam Trans & VTA buses. The upgrades to electric are much nicer, cleaner and quieter.
