Walking into this Waffle House felt like entering a wildlife documentary narrated by someone who hasn't slept in days. The floors were sticky in a way that suggested long-term commitment. The tables looked like they'd seen things. The employees were so greasy they reflected the overhead lights like human frying pans. Mid-meal, a completely unhinged customer started giving a loud monologue to no one, shadowboxing the jukebox and announcing life updates nobody asked for. Outside, two raccoons were aggressively fighting over what was definitely raw meat by the dumpster, and at one point I couldn't tell if they worked there or not. Honestly, I half-expected one to come inside and ask for a shift meal. I understand Waffle House has a reputation, but this place felt less like a restaurant and more like a social experiment that lost funding. I survived, but I will not be returning. read more

It's been many years since I have been to the Waffle House in Irondale off Crestwood Blvd. I seriously doubt I will ever go back. On this day 8/13 a little before 5am, I walked in to a surprisingly quiet Waffle House in Irondale and there was maybe 5 people seated and two others came in for a to go order after I sat down. Not too long after being seated the short-order cook barked at me from the from the grill saying, " I'm alone and will get your order as soon as she can ". She was obviously alone, in the weeds and the griddle was full of food cooking. She was obviously trying as hard as she could to get her orders done and plated. Over the next 15 minutes, she quickly walked by my table a few times while she was getting orders ready to plate and I barked out, " Coco-Cola please - No Rush....." About 10-15 minutes later she served the two guys behind me then maybe 10-15 minutes later she served the others on the counter. Apparently a couple of these orders were to go as well. When she finely got all the others fed and collected their payments she locked the door behind them leaving. After I was the only one in the place she served my coco-cola and took my order. When looking at the menu with no obvious rush for my order, I was thinking to myself what would be something to order that would be hard to screw up cooking.....so I ordered a plate of scattered well done hash browns with a couple of over easy eggs on top with a side of country ham. Maybe 10 - 15 minutes later she served my meal. It was terrible. So much for something hard to screw up. After just a couple of bits, I ended up getting it all boxed to go. When I got home I fed it all to Max, My Great Dane. He did not complain. The Country Ham was wafer thin, very very salty, tough as leather and could be used sole of my shoes, the eggs were over cooked hard and the hash browns were under cooked, not scattered well done as ordered. The Coco-Cola was flat - with no fizz and tasted terrible. There It is everything I ordered that was awful. I really didn't have high expectations at Waffle House but expected it to be better than it was. Max, my Great Dane was pleased I didn't eat my breakfast . He did not complain once. This meal cost $21.00 with a very generous $5 tip. I normally don't tip over 15% when the service and food is awful but given the circumstances gave her 5 bucks. She growled that someone quit and left her alone before I came in. So it appears it's going to be long day for the poor soul. For $21.00 I could have found a better breakfast. read more

Was my last review a little harsh? Am I being too nice because I haven't been to WH in a while? Was taking my kids for their first real Waffle House experience putting me in rose colored glasses? Was it not having to cook breakfast on a holiday weekend? I really don't know the answer to any of these questions. But they all factor in to my four star review. I have to let poor, poor Justin know that his review of this place where he essentially called himself Gus during a time that was still hopeful. But I am in his boat. Judge me if you must. But Waffle House is an iconic always enjoyable food experience. They biggest difference is the customer service. And this time, my kids splitting an All-Star, waitresses gushing over them, a very short wait and an extra wiping of the tables to remove that typical syrup stick all factored in. When I go, it is either All-Star or Patty Melt. But either must come with hashbrowns. How those crispy taters are served depends on how "healthy" I'm feeling that day. But always so good. Eggs were perfect, waffle was how I have known it from being a wee boy and the sausage was still not the greatest in the world. But it still filled that much needed hunger monster. This is one of the better Waffle House's in town. They recently just tore down the entire building and rebuilt it and it's a great improvement. It's a bit more spacious and a lot nicer, cleaner Waffle House. The food is good but it's kind of what you'd expect. Staff was nice. They also have a TouchTune jukebox which is fun. read more

Couldn't get a table cleaned. Every time I try and eat here, there are many open tables that are not cleaned. The staff lacks a sense of urgency and doesn't seem to mind people waiting 10 mins or more for a cleaned table. Luckily there is one 1/4 mile down the road. These employees are complete asshats...got there before 8 pm tonight and they said they were closed. The employees were cooking up food on the grill for one another and when I pulled on the locked door they waved me off..we are closed. Well, guess what the website and FB page state you are open 24/7. I will take this up the chain...gross incompetence...would have tipped like crazy because of mother's day. Let me start by saying that I love Waffle House. There's not a restaurant elsewhere in the South where you'll find CEOs, tradesmen, late-shift workers and folks who have had way too much to drink and need that good, greasy, bready breakfast food, all together and rubbing elbows at the counter. It's a melting pot and I absolutely love that. And their coffee is just fabulous (tips hat to Royal Cup, right here in Birmingham, who roasts and grinds coffee for every Waffle House in the US). But THIS Waffle House ... well, it's just the bottom of the heap. We went there after a concert at Iron City, so we crossed the threshold around midnight. We ordered coffee and a waffle and sausage. Not a difficult thing, or so we thought. The waffle took two tries for Brown, our server, to get right. He forgot to spray the waffle iron and the first one came out in pieces, folded, and undercooked. I watched as he scraped it onto a plate and considered giving it to us - then thought better of it (smart guy) and threw it away. He then poured our coffee. One cup each. Perfect for the first round. He brought us water. He remade the waffle. Again. He brought the sausage. He brought the waffle. We asked for more coffee. He turned around and continued talking with other servers - it was LOUD and a continuous personal conversation amongst the five people who worked behind the counter. We waved at Brown and he looked through us. So we decided to leave. I took our ticket to the cash register where Brown suddenly showed up - he rang us up, I gave him a 20% tip (which was $2.11, and I gave him $2.50) and he actually got mad that I hadn't given him more. I get that this is the toughest job ever - I really do - but I will never, ever go back to this Waffle House. I was appalled at the service and the attitude and the volume and - yes - as one other reviewer noted, it was CHILLY in there. read more

It appears there may be just a tad bit more space here, but it may just appear that way. Everything looks very similar to the previous layout expect in better condition. I never expect much from a Waffle House but this is the worst damn Waffle House there is. The service is piss-poor, the silverware and dishes are dirty, the grits are floating bowls of butter, they forget parts of your order and never come back to check on you...it's terrible. I was in there a few Sundays ago and no one would take our drink order. One guy finally took our food order but refused to take our drink order. We asked 3 different servers for drinks, all of whom said yeah, sure and then walked off without asking us what we wanted. We walked out. I'm not going back. Fine. That is about all there is to describe this Waffle House. The food is exactly what you expect from WH, cooked in extra butter. This particular place was freezing and our orders took forever to get to the table when they were not busy. With a 2 year old, this can be tough which is why we went t this particular WH. Everything was cooked as ordered and except for never wanting to order a T-bone at WH again, exactly as expected. For $25 for two of us, sharing with our daughter, we will just head to Bogue's or Fife's next time for the same price. The men's room was nasty and smelled like 150 years of heaving smoking. -Loud pungent odor upon walking in. -I felt nauseous, had to leave immediately to escape the smell, Jesus Christ! -This place stunk so bad as if rotten animals were being stored here. -Floors were slippery greasy. -Waffle irons (5) had not been cleaned for hours and were riddled with cooked batter at the bottom. -There were customers who seemingly ignored the smell or were used to this filthy trough and ate happily; no way in hell, as much I LOVE WF wouldn't I eat or drink anything from this place. The management needs to get this place in order. I wonder how many people have walked out of this place simply due to the smell and dirty floors (of the seating area). My wife and I always stop and eat as many times as we can at any Waffle House closest to us when we visit from Chicago to any southern state. Let me just start by stating that I'm a big fan of Waffle House...but today, not so much. By dining space was not properly cleaned until I brought the issue up. Finally ordered...could see my food just sitting there getting colder by the minute. When it finally arrived, it was ice cold AND not even what I ordered. Still waited on beverages. 10-12 minutes, order reappears with same cold eggs. It sat in front of me 3-4 minutes until cutlery arrived. Still waiting on something to drink. Beverages arrived...wrong. Yo screw this place. The service was terrible af. We came in and ordered only four of us, didn't get silverware with our food, the waffles came to us 30 minutes after we had finished our other food... the thing that killed me; WE NEVER GOT OUR DRINKS. I went to the restroom to handle my business THERE WAS NO TOILET PAPER!!! Then I was like yo I'll be savage I'll use paper towels I gots to use this toilet! Went to the paper towel dispenser EMTIER THAN MY INLAWS HEART. When we were paying I just asked "and could I just get those drinks to go please" it took 20 minutes to get 2 coffees. This is hands down the most filthy Waffle House I have ever seen. We sit down one morning and wait, and wait, and wait. I started to wonder if we were invisible. As we wait we notice the cook and a few waitresses have a party going in the kitchen. Literally, the cook was dancing for the waitresses. Whooting, hollaring...wow. Since we were still being ignored we decided to watch the show. This went on for quite some time until another waitress appears from the back to take our order. This poor lady looked to still be drunk from the night before or enjoying something in the back room. She was barely coherent and needed to go home! As we wait for our food we notice the kitchen floor, covered in egg shells, waffle batter etc. This made me sick enough to enjoy my cold food and empty coffee cup even less. Needless to say we will never go back. This place needs to be shut down by the health department. read more
