It has been a while since I got duck confit, and I loved the luxuries of tasting it without the price tag tonight. Only $8 to add some on to either the caesar or house salad options. I opted for the farro bowl, but was hesitant about the beets--cause, well, beets are not my jam-- but the kitchen put them on the side for me! (Thank you!!). I added braised pork. The bowl is a very creative and i loved the concept but the execution just need a bit of tweaking. The bowl was just too greasy. And I don't think the grease was only coming from the pork. The farro was about 1 or 2 minutes overcooked for my taste; however, I would try it again maybe with just the egg. I hear great things about thw smash burger so I'll come back and try my luck. For my entrée, I ordered the Truffled Farro Bowl and added braised pork for an additional $6. For the upcharge, there could have been a bit more pork; however, the bowl itself was HUGE... I had so many leftovers. I asked to substitute the goat cheese for Parmesan, but it was still served with goat cheese. I so tediously did my best to remove any and all goat cheese so I could properly enjoy my meal. Besides the goat cheese part, this bowl was phenomenal. My boyfriend ordered the Duck Bahn Mi with a side of Maple Bacon Brussels. I tried both of his items and can attest that they were very good (especially the Brussels)! Ok, so I was strolling through restaurants and wanted to go somewhere I've never been. I stumbled across this gem in Mountain Brook and I will say that this place didn't disappoint. The staff is very friendly and we're eager to assist us in any way possible. I had the featured burger which was two patties with three types of cheese, arugula and a delicious aioli. I also had the duck banh mi. This was an amazing sandwich. The duck was so tender and flavorful. The burger is now in my top three in the state! They did a great job paying attention to the small things like fresh cilantro and jalapeño on the duck. The hand cut fries are always my favorite and they were awesome. The bacon wrapped dates are delicious. I think for $9 they can come with a few more bites... maybe 8 so that our table of four could each have two. The fried chicken entree looked so crispy and perfect. I had the farro bowl with pulled pork and it was great! Make sure you're ok with beets and red onions before ordering. Items ordered: 2 unsweet tea 1 "Oko" 1 hummus with tabbouleh 1 truffled farro bowl 1 side Brussels 1 side smashed potatoes 1 shrimp and grits Cost: $78.65 The tea was bold and strong, and they brought a little pitcher to help us refill our drinks. The "Oko" was described as a cabbage pancake, so I thought it might be different- it arrived, it was room temp and tasted good, but the egg we added was a browned egg (which I don't enjoy). The texture of this was soft and more crepe-y. Hummus with Tebbouleh was good- made of black eyed peas and chickpeas, which I appreciate. It required salt and pepper, and the tebbouleh was actually a scoop of farro on top, but I definitely would order again for something light and tasty. Truffled farro bowl- I'm not sure what was truffled about this, as there were not mushrooms or truffles. I will say, if you are a granola warrior, you might love this. It has roasted beets, farro, balsamic glaze, and goat cheese, so it's rich, but is like an earth casserole. Side of Brussels and smashed potatoes- NOPE. Brussels were crispy (like possibly made yesterday) and the smashed potatoes tasted a bit like bagged mashed potatoes with bacon favoring. Not my jam. I thought the quality matched the prices. Good quality and reasonable prices. Most entrees were under $15. I got the banh mi chicken sandwich which is a Vietnamese Bbq chicken sandwich. It was made with chicken thighs, great veggies and good bread. ***You do however have to pay for your sides. They are not included which in theory is a good way to keep entree prices down. They are all about $5 & they have some decent options. I went with the pimento cheese polenta which is similar to cheese grits but made with corn I think. It was smokey I liked that but if you have a smoke flavor aversion you should note that is the major flavor overtone of this side. The cheese part was subtle. My sister got the cauliflower pancake okonomiyaki. I love that a restaurant in Birmingham Alabama had such a diverse menu. She really liked it. I took a bite and was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful flavor and texture. The highlight was the bread pudding. I called it a warm hug on a plate. It was super comforting. My friend and BIL got the double cheese burger and hand cut fries. We made fun of them for being basic but it looked so dang good. They said they would rate it 8/10 which is super high coming from them. It is made with a "local bun" whatever that means. We had fun trying to guess what food buzz words meant. I'm gonna have to get the burger next time. It really did look incredible, local bun and all. We didn't sit on the beautiful porch because it was 99 degrees and humid out but most of their patrons actually did opt to sit out there regardless. It is covered and well lit with ceiling fans. Overall, it paid pretty good dividends. The pancake itself was flavorful with just the right amount of Sriracha. Bonus points for the black sesame seeds. I enjoyed the meal and the boldness to do a dish like the Oko, as I'm quite sure you aren't going to find many Japanese pancakes served up in Bham. I'd personally like the pancake on a little bit more of the crispy side. Also, the braised pork was decent, but it didn't really fit with the dish. I'd like to see the meat better integrated with the pancake itself instead of just thrown on there. Perhaps layer chashu onto and into the pancake like pepperoni on a pizza?? We enjoyed it! I suppose my complaint is with value. I got a Moscow Mule, and it was definitely weak on the alcohol. Not worth $9 for zero buzz. Sorry. The second unpleasant shock was that the side of fries my friend got with her burger was $5. They were good, but they weren't $5 good. Food is flavorful, if not generous (catfish filet on the catfish po' boy was amazingly thin, almost leathery, and the sandwich was mostly bread, but the dish was salvaged by a fantastic malt vinegar tartar sauce). The cubano was respectable, though not remarkable. The deviled eggs were over-cooked and slightly rubbery, but deliciously filled. It's good food, not great. The show-stopper food-wise was the cabbage pancake, called The Oko... savory and delicious, available with bacon, egg, pork, and chicken toppings, it is the perfect appetizer and not to be missed. The beverage program is excellent and speaks to all tastes. The cocktail list is creative and diverse; I suggest the calorie and carb-conscious try the Ranch Water, a well-balanced and food-friendly dry tequila cocktail.
