BEWARE! Worst experience here. No one is clearing tables, I had to wait for 5 minutes for someone to notice that I needed to sit, 6 tables were free but cluttered with dirty dishes. The floor was disgusting and dirty, I thought someone would sweep it but no one did the entire time I was here. Not a single table was cleared the time I was here and the dishes that were on my table were just shoved to the next table. When our food was served it was on to-go plates because they "ran out" of clean plates. She said they are short staffed but the 6 crew are here and standing around on their phones. First time going trying the Waffle House! Talk about being excited! Haha Was hungry and wanted to get something to eat before I hit the road. Ordered the All-Star Special which came with a waffle, scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, toast, grits (with cheese) and a coffee. That syrup, waffle and butter combo is just....YES! I enjoyed every last bit of my food. I had the itis and was wondering how I was going to make it back home. Great service and the staff was pretty cool. We were coming from Bethany beach , Delaware. Wanted to grab breakfast. We ate at the Waffle House. We sat at the counter. We waited a bit for them to clean the counter. They were not busy and moved very slow. We finally were able to order. The food arrive quick and hot. Also our coffee and tea were served hot. Something that was very disturbing was , the light fixtures above the counter where we were eating there was a light fixture that was full of dead bugs and a fly flying around. Went to the Waffle House in Smyrna Delaware today with a good friend of mines. Want to start off by saying this is one of the cleanest Waffle House i have ever been to. Our cook Jaiden gave us a loud friendly greeting and great service. Very polite to every customer that came in the store. Went in and had food to go within ten min. They were pretty busy. I didnt read other reviews, but can see how some things can get messed up. Over all food was fresh. Staff was friendly, and cost was fair. 2 waffles to go for 6 bucks. Cant beat that. Most employees kept changing gloves. A few I saw touch money, and clean up some dishes then packed up my food. Stopped in my travels. Used to enjoy the Waffle House until it turned they all turned into live action YouTube videos. There will always be fighting, drunks, screaming, a few homeless people wandering around outside, and a good chance that you will see something that you can never unsee. When staying in Smyrna for Firefly festival in Dover, my boyfriend insisted we try Waffle House. I was weary, but didn't want to let him down, so we stopped here for a late lunch on a Saturday. I was pleasantly surprised at the food! The prices are great, the portions are good, and the service was awesome. People were so kind and welcoming. We loved it so much, we came back later that night after the festival! We were again greeted with warm smiles and even given Waffle House paper hats that I'll keep as a memory for years to come. You know, I'm a little surprised at some Yelpers in Delaware. Do you have any perspective at all? I don't mean to barge in here and start throwing stones. But I'm speaking directly to the guy writing the smarmy review comparing this place to the Mendenhall Inn and the Hotel DuPont, as if only classy restaurants deserve great ratings, and telling us that if we rate a restaurant 5 stars we should explain ourselves. Dude, it's a Waffle House in Smyrna. Cut it some slack. Now, some of you other folks here bashed this place pretty good. Well, sure I'd be tempted to dock it to one star if I thought I got sick from eating here. So I won't bash you guys. But you want me to explain why I gave it 5 stars? OK, here goes... You see, when you decide to knock a place like this to two stars even though you actually admitted the food was decent and the service was good, you affect livelihoods. Places like this that don't get a lot of good reviews for whatever reason get affected by undeserved low ratings. And someone owns this place that is probably fighting to make a living in this world like most of us. So for your self-indulgent attitude of not deeming a place like this worthy of praise, you drag a place down that probably doesn't deserve it. So the truth is, I'm a fan of Waffle House in general. I think they generally put out good fare. This particular day, I ate here and I'd probably rate the food three stars. The service about the same. It wasn't the best Waffle House experience I've ever had. Far from the worst. It's a basic place. It was clean enough when I ate there. The waffles were still awesome. Service was friendly to me. No, it wasn't one of the finest meals I could have gotten in the end as the grits were just OK, and the coffee wasn't anything special. So why do I give it 5 stars? Simple, I'm tacking on the star that should have been added to that one review, and I'm giving it one more star because I thought at least one of those one star reviews deserved a little slack. Found this Waffle House in Smyrna DE. Very friendly service and warmth welcoming. The store looks cleaner than other Waffle House I found. I ordered steak and eggs, and it was prepared and cooked wonderfully to my request. The server, Aaron (I think ), was patience and caring about his customers. And I like that !! We stopped at this location on a Saturday, stood around for close to 30 mins with no acknowledgement. When I asked about a table, they said there were none available when we could see 4 empty but dirty tables and employees standing around doing nothing and had bad attitudes towards customers. Waffle House's are usually very organized, not the one in Smyrna at least today. 7 people behind the counter, didn't see a manager.There were only 5 patrons (3 tables and 2 at the counter) We ordered 2 coffee's while we were waiting to order, took me over 5 minutes to get mine. When we ordered my husband was half done his before I got my complete order. I ordered hash browns and biscuits and gravy . First of all my husband and I sat for about 10 minutes before they took our order. Once it was given which was simple a caveman could have done it we waited, waited, and waited for about another 20 minutes. The place was NOT crowded and they're only serving up breakfast foods and maybe a burger. This WAFFLE HOUSE IS THE WORST! Oh, the manager shows up and sits, I guess, in the back. I've never had a problem while eating here. I come in late at night on the regular, so most of the servers know my order and have me set up with my drink and silverware as soon as they see my car pull up. Pleasant staff, good enough food for the price. Some of you people rating so harshly need to get a grip. In talking with these employees, I've learned they deal with some serious bull that I know *I* wouldn't wanna deal with. Nope. With some of the horror stories they tell me about customers and other employees, I'm glad I work where I do. Be nice to them cuz they sure as heck need it. Weekend nights they are normally short staffed, so things can get chaotic. I tend to avoid weekend nights for that reason. You might do good to do the same, or be patient and understanding if you DO go on a weekend night. They get all the drunks ever with only three people working. Also.... I saw one person throwing a stink about a dirty table. (Looking at you, Doug.) I bet you they tried to sit at a dirty table when there were like 20 clean tables available. I had never been to a Waffle House before, and when I saw that the Smyrna location garnered two five-star reviews, I knew I had to try it. Five stars, after all, would put this restaurant into the upper echelons along with stalwarts such as the Hotel DuPont, the Mendenhall Inn, and other fancy fare. Could this tiny building sitting on the side of Route 13 in the diminutive burg of Smyrna be a culinary gem masked as an unassuming diner? The large glass windows allow one to see inside from the road; it certainly doesn't look like a five-star restaurant from the outside...could some magical transformation occur somewhere during one's passage through the building's foyer - the formica countertops wondrously changed to wood paneling, the hard plastic stools transmogrified into plush leather seats? Sadly, no - what you see is what you get with the Waffle House; no fairy dust turns this into a Neverland of dining delight once you walk through the door. A five-star review is certainly out-of-place, if not outright disingenuous. This is a simple, Southern diner with food that is cheap both in terms of its prices and its quality. It's a restaurant that certainly belongs at its location: a highway exit in a rural town like Smyrna. If you're going to be rating a restaurant five-stars, you certainly should explain yourself - I'm going to do so even with this one-star review. The waffle batter, ladled up from a plastic bucket onto the waffle press, is clearly heavy on the sugar and butter and light on the flour. Admittedly, it's impressive that they're making these waffles fresh, given the price you're paying for the meal. After tasting a friend's waffle, I turned to my hamburger. The white, Wonder-bread bun was not stale, and the congealed grease sitting on top of the burger concealed what was decidedly a decent beef patty that was a step up from McDonalds' frozen, Grade-Z meat. The tomato was fresh, although the iceburg lettuce was slightly wilted. The table was outfitted with an impressive array of condiments: Heinz-57, Tabasco, and A-1 supplemented the typical ketchup and mustard. It's nice that you can see the kitchen from your seat, ensuring that the staff follows good hygiene practices (or, at least, that it's noticeable when they don't). Our waiter was very friendly and accomodating - we certainly had no complaints about the service. Notably, most of the booths would only seat two people - this isn't a restaurant where you can bring your whole family. All in all, Waffle House is giving you exactly what you pay for: low-quality food at extremely reasonable prices. This is a decent Waffle House (for what Waffle Houses are--fast food on a plate) and they do eggs and bacon right, which is something I can't say for their neighbor Smyrna Diner. This place has edible breakfasts, the Smyrna Diner's food is terrible. How can you mess up an egg? Even a chicken gets it right most of the time, and they are not known for their intellect. The menu is sort of limited although they claim something like 22,945 sorts of hashed browns, if you do some sort of recursion calculation on your HP12C with the combination of toppings like onion, jalapeno or mushroom plus Scattered, Smothered, Covered and Chunked. So if you can't find something you like, well, you're durn hard to please. The omelets are good (if the cheese has time to melt), the basic brekkie is good. I don't hold with their biscuits or gravy. The coffee is tolerable. One claim to fame is they use brand name ingredients (expensive Heinz 57 Sauce is on every table) and it does show. Their grits are bad. BAD. I suppose it's our location. Even you're even a hair on the wrong side of the Mason Dixon Line (and that marker is only 20 miles from Smyrna) grits cannot be made correctly. Yes, the boiling water seeping into a grit is affected somehow by latitude and longitude. Too far north or in Yankee Country and grits become inedible. Trust me on this. I've had lunch here--and the burgers were much better than the fast food drive thru kind, and I'd even say they beat out some fancy places around town I could name. The "ambience" is grim; gray speckled linoleum tinted to hide dirt, shiny white and yellow tile walls and fixed-seating booths. However, it's a very good breakfast or burger. They even have a juke box. My favorite trick is to select all the Waffle House tunes (they have their own songs extolling the virtues of the Waffle House) one after the other, load it up. The food came out sporadically, I had to continuously ask for coffee, and I don't think this place has seen a broom or mop since it opened. When faced with a four hour drive home and you've made the regrettable decision of not eating before starting your trip most travelers are faced with a dilemma. Wawa or something else? In this case I went against my better judgement and thought "I've never been to a Waffle House, let's give it a shot". As they say everything is a worth a try and that is where my experiences at the Waffle House will end. The space is tiny and a bit of a throw back, lots of retro diner furniture and decor all over the place. We were warmly greeted and sat. I will say that everyone we interacted with seemed genuinely happy to work there. Egg sandwich and a two egg breakfast were brought out in no time at all but the food just wasn't good enough to warrant a return visit. Too much butter. I'm never impressed by Kraft singles. I noticed that Waffle House is one of those places that you either love or hate and I get that both from Yelp reviews and from talking to people about it. I stopped here on my way south because it was the only restaurant in the area open on Christmas Day. I thought the food was interesting, especially since I had hash browns "all the way".
