Double charge for one item. How many more 'mistakes' are there?

Stay away from WakeMed and Dr. Ian Villanueva. I think what matters to them is to charge as much as possible, taking advantage of people's naivety. I think that people's health is the least of their concerns. On June 9, 2024, my 22-year-old son had a slight discomfort in his lower stomach, so he went to WakeMed North Hospital. There he told them that he assumed it could be appendicitis; a serious mistake because the hospital took it as a fact and told him he had to have an appendectomy: the cost of the emergency visit and the simple one-hour surgery (maximum) was $47,637.00 (and they charge double for some things, see image). How long can this abuse by the entire health system continue?

If I could give this hospital a ZERO, I would. My grandmother was brought here in an emergency by EMS & I got a call from the ER telling me she had BONE CANCER from an X-RAY & would not do any follow-up testing to prove it due to her age!!! HE made the determination that because of her age, she didn't need to know if she really had it or not. They admitted her and even had someone from HOSPICE call me the next day!! How do they do that without me saying I agreed with it? I'm her POA. I do everything for her & they had those legal records. She had other issues going on that they couldn't figure out, so they transferred her to their main WakeMed location off of New Bern Ave so that they could have her bed for another patient. I refused to allow her to be discharged WITHOUT them proving that she had what they claimed she had. She was at WakeMed for over 2 months because we were fighting & I complained to every entity that I could about their unethical practices. Finally, after 2 months, they did the test I requested and, GUESS WHAT, she didn't have Cancer AT ALL!! They misdiagnosed her and was going to throw her away on hospice for nothing. Dealing with them was extremely exhausting, but I don't regret fighting for her. I'd do it again over and over again. Both locations have horrible nurses who'd rather sit around gossiping in the hallway than to be helping those who need their care. I even heard a group of nurses mocking some Hispanic patients that they had and laughing about how they were moaning in pain and that they couldn't understand them. I told the charge nurse. Of course nothing happened. Please beware!! Don't let these people misdiagnose you or your family. FIGHT & don't believe what they say as the gospel. They lie & they don't care about the elderly. From the doctors to the nurses to the social workers...they ALL need new careers away from people because they don't have common decency and lack the emotional intelligence to take care of others!!!

The best unmedicated/natural birth experience for my husband and I's first baby. Incredible staff and care.

Knowing the complexity of my many chronic health conditions and my long medication list, it would be important to me and the staff if I bring my detailed medication list, so I emphasized, many times to make sure my property arrives to my room with me, yet, it was lost for 24 hours hours. During that time, after a complex spinal surgery, I wasn't given my correct medications, or the correct doses at the correct times, which happens frequently when I'm hospitalized, not only at Rex. Once it was found, after I complained to Patients Relations, the head of security came, but for reasons I still don't know. He did a good job explaining how the security process was supposed to work, but he didn't explain how my property got missing. especially, after me emphasizing it's importance to my hospital stay. It was as if he couldn't realize the procedure wasn't relevant. What's relevant is what actually happened and why. His explanation was the most incompetent, unprofessional, and unethical explanation imaginable. His staff members were sleep so he, evidently, didn't think that losing my property was worth waking up his staff members, who knew the details of what happened. As if that wasn't demoralizing enough, he then told me to file a complaint while walking out. Mostafa Foluke'.

My experience with each staff member was superb! Everyone- my doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, lab technicians , the folks who delivered my lunch trays, (and anyone in between) treated me professionally, with kindness, compassion and respect. I really want to give this hospital 5 stars but I can't due to one major issue. The bed, precisely the mattress was horrible! I was admitted with an issue concerning my spine, yet the mattress on my bed actually made my pain worse. There was a visible dent or "wallowed out" hole in this mattress which caused me enough discomfort that it interfered with my ability to sleep, and added to my pain level. I mentioned this to several staff members, and the reply was always the same, " That's what everyone says. All the beds here are in poor shape." A nurse gave me a small cushion to fit in the hole in hopes of helping the situation, which improved it very little. They were in the process of trying to find a better bed, but I was released before it happened. I am not a person who complains much, but I realized that if the reply was always-" most of the bed are like this," Then there are so many other patients suffering during their stay at WakeMed Cary Hospital, something must be done to correct the problem. I sincerely hope that WakeMed's Supply Chain Executive Director will take this to heart.

My mother's experience with Dr. John Kaspar and WakeMed Urology was nothing short of unacceptable…read more After her initial surgery, she was left dealing with extremely difficult and stressful circumstances that dramatically affected her quality of life. Instead of feeling supported by the physician and healthcare system we trusted, we were left feeling completely on our own during a time when proper medical guidance and follow-up were critical. What was most frustrating was the complete lack of accountability and follow-through. At our last appointment, Dr. Kaspar specifically informed us that his office would be reaching out to schedule the next follow-up appointment. That never happened. No phone call, no appointment, no communication, and no explanation. For a practice responsible for caring for post-surgical patients, this level of neglect and lack of coordination is deeply concerning. Throughout this entire experience, we felt as though my mother was treated more like a chart number than a patient. When a family entrusts a surgeon with the care of a loved one, they expect not only medical expertise but also professionalism, communication, compassion, and a commitment to ensuring proper recovery. Unfortunately, our experience with Dr. Kaspar and WakeMed fell far short of those expectations. The combination of the difficult outcome following surgery and the complete failure to follow through on promised post-operative care destroyed our confidence in this provider and the practice. We would never return and cannot recommend Dr. Kaspar or WakeMed Urology based on our experience. Patients deserve far better communication and continuity of care than what we received.

I hadn't been here a week when I needed assistance so distance won the battle. I went to a location closer to my home then was transferred to this main campus. Aesthetically, it's not the most modern hospital in the area meaning it's not necessarily "pretty". At the end of the day, that doesn't matter. My interactions were all pretty seamless - from the registration counter to conversations with surgical staff and every step in between. The standout group were all the nurses who helped me during my stints. They were some of the kindest people I've ever met. Which signaled, to me, that they were/are being treated well by their employer. To say this was a live-changing exchange is an understatement. If I had to make a choice on one of the best hospitals in the area based on the level of care and commitment from staff, I'd choose WakeMed.
