My husband and I dined here last week on our vacation to Canmore/Banff. The experience was very disappointing, especially for the price. My husband and I both ordered the classic schnitzel and it wasn't bad but there was also nothing outstanding about it. It was definitely lacking in taste. We also order the apple strudel and it was also lacking in taste. My mom makes both and I would have much rather eaten a home cooked meal from her. The service was even worse. It was by far the worst service we experienced while on vacation. The serve paid very little attention to our table, we were constantly waiting for him to come over, and he had only one or two other tables that we could see. He didn't seems to notice or care that he was providing inadequate service. I would suggest skipping this restaurant. read more

Dined here for business with some colleagues tonight. Ordered the Cornish hen and it was fantastic. Atmosphere was great and the beer was good too! Adding to the ambiance... it was snowing outside and the fresh snow on the evergreens outside made this rustic feel of the restaurant that much more inviting! Best German food we have ever had outside of Germany and probably better than a lot Of the food we had in Germany! We tried two of the snitzels (jaeger and the one with egg on it) and the sausage platter and all were out of this world. We also had the cheese fondue which was yummy and fun. The kids were able to squeeze in chocolate fondue at end (fortunately there was a kids size that they could have split and been more than fine). Only downsides were that it was very expensive and a little formal for us (felt odd drinking a giant German beer in a white table cloth setting).....but the actual room was beautiful. Also we didn't realize there was free public parking next to the falls (we parked at hotel parking). But provided us a nice chance to walk around Banff springs hotel! read more

My husband and I came to the pub to try something different at the hotel. The pub is not connected to the fairmont, but they are affiliated with them. It was a Thursday night, which is trivia night. When we got to the pub trivia night ended so about 50 people cleared out. There were only 2 other couples sitting inside besides us. A server greeted us, brought some waters and then said she would be right back to take our drink/food orders. Almost 30 minutes later, no sign of the server. We ended up walking out. High hopes but so disappointed We went here with some very high hopes and excited for some fondue. 125 per person with a wine pairing... Well the wine pairing was basic run of the mill wines from the okanagon. The meat given was thinly sliced and all the same kind of meat. Our server poured our wine so early for the meat or rather it took so long to come out we finished our wine before we even ate and asked for another glass. We were informed it was 19 dollars a glass..... WHAT?! After we walked away we wondered how we had spent almost 300 dollars on a block of melted cheese, some sliced meat and mediocre wine.... Classic Swiss lodge setting with animals on the wall, dark colors, a large fireplace, and the smell of leather. The fondue tasting menu will leave you impossibly full, especially if you pair it with a liter of dunkel bier. The veal chops are enormous and a bit bland, while the spaetzle was too dry. The chocolate fondue was underwhelming and too sweet. Great ambiance and quiet setting. Go there if you have a huge appetite apres ski. read more

Our waiter, Mark, is what bumped this from 4 stars to 5. He was awesome! He moved us to a better table next to the window so we could see the gorgeous view, offered to take our picture outside on the patio, and alerted us to get up and go outside because a herd of elk were passing through. He was super personable and friendly without being intrusive. It's a gorgeous setting to enjoy some German food, though it's definitely more upscale and expensive than our favorite German place back home. Husband took me here for dinner to celebrate my birthday. We shared several sausages and the raclette potatoes. The food was really tasty and the service was excellent. I definitely didn't leave hungry. Their bread basket was really good too. Husband also appreciated their beers on tap. The one he had is one he said you can never find on tap, even in Germany! Definitely worth going to if you are near the Banff Springs Hotel. read more

The schnitzel was dry, tough, and tasteless. The service was sparse. The price outrageous for the quality. I was really hoping for a good meal. I think all the fairmont restaurants have a lot of room for improvement as far as the quality of taste in the food. read more

I was very excited to try the cheese fondue but was extremely disappointed from the first bite. The first flavours to come through are the salty goodness of the cheese, however it is almost immediately overpowered by the flavour of the white wine leaving an unpleasant bitter flavour in your mouth and leaving me ultimately dissatisfied and disappointed. The flavour of the white wine was very strong and overpowered the whole dish to the point where I couldn't bring myself to eat it. In my opinion cheese fondue should taste like the cheese in it firstly, with any other flavours only complimenting and never overpowering. The schnitzel was very basic and the pickerel was a tad overcooked, but our entrees overall were incredibly bland. The staff member that sat us and our server seemed unwelcoming and distracted. We were left waiting for our starter, our entrees, and desserts. We would finish a course and wait quite a while until finally being noticed. It was often that another staff member would notice us waiting or finished eating and would clear our plates and assure us our server would be right over, but she never was. I would have been understanding of this if they were quite busy, but they were really not. All of our food was served lukewarm, which was especially disappointing with the fonue. Would not recommend and will not return. read more

We were guests of the hotel and reserved a table Friday night. We ordered the Waldhaus Experience, supposedly a three course fondue and greens with wine pairings. No greens arrived and after our three courses with three middling-quality glasses of wine each, I noted on a sign in the restroom that the special for that evening was a three course fondue meal. Had we ordered it at the price of the special, we could have spent an additional $140 on wine before reaching the total we were charged for the "Experience." It was not the kind of experience I expect from Fairmont hotels. I think our server took the opportunity to fleece us and will not return to this hotel again. Bad form. read more

Love this place for a drink on the patio! Great view of the Bow Falls and the golf course. After checking out the Bow Falls, you can walk up a trail to the Walhaus Restaurant. Stop for a drink on the patio then continue your walk up to the Banff Springs. There might have been many wasps on the patio and one ended up in my drink. But they diligently provided me with a new drink. Definitely a great spot to check out in Banff! read more

My friend took me to Banff to have lunch at this pub and restaurant. I LOVE IT! It's on the old Banff Springs Golf Course and is part of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel but detached, but close enough for walking. The patio of this pub/restaurant overlooks the Bow Fall/Bow River. They have a good selection of international beers and I started drinking a German beer: Schneider Weiss, great beer with great taste. Drinking started ore-food. I ended up ordering Poutine w/ Bratswurth and my buddy ordered the Weinerschnitzel. The Poutine was amazing, fries were perfectly fried and not too thick or too thin, gravy was delicious, cheese had the perfect melted gooeyness and the Bratswurth was A-MAZ-ING as in nice flavor, juicy and soft. The best part of this was that it was served in a SF cast iron pan. I ended the afternoon with a local wheat beer from the Okotoks, called Grasshoppe... There was a slight aftertaste but not bad at all. The only downside to dining out in the patio was that Poplar tree that blew a grip of cotton-like material everywhere while sitting in the patio. All in a a good restaurant, with actual history with it built in the 1920s, good food, and a good selection of beers. read more

OK place. Pricey. Hard as hell to find. No parking. Had to walk through the woods to get here. UGH! Lots of fondue. Our portions were ok and we had a great view of the Spray river with coyotes running around. A street that leads up to the place has a sign that says Do Not Enter...but every shuttle drove on it. On our first day in Banff, we walked over to the Fairmont Banff Springs to have an early dinner at the Waldhaus Pub. We had the burger and the pulled pork, both of which were above average. They also had a decent selection of beer which we tried out. The outdoor patio is a great place to have a drink or a meal in the late afternoons, as you can watch people play golf and enjoy the beauty of Banff. As with every place we tried in Banff, the food was above average and the service a bit slower than what we are used to. read more

Cold 4 degree weather outside and saturday night. Where to go for dinner when we didn't have a reservation and all the restaurants in the hotel were fully booked. We decided to go visit this pub as it is first-come-first-serve, no reservations. It was a short 5 minute cold but refreshing walk through the snowy garden but well lit by lamps. Apparently there is a shuttle that brings guests over but we found that out later. We were lucky perhaps due to the cold? but we were able to find a table immediately. Good beer, good food, comfortable seating, and attentive service. good to try--charcuterie platter and apple streudel. read more

Order the sweet potato fries, they're incredible. The pasta tastes so fresh I thought I was eating straight from the banff National Park. It's absurd in the best way possible. The schnitzel is also authentic and a massive portion. You will not go hungry here. Honestly pub food is what you need after a long hike. 10/10! read more

As a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised at the food they prepared. I ordered their one vegan/vegetarian dish as well as some sauerkraut and pickles and it was SOO GOOD. their sauerkraut is so fresh and delicious and crunchy and I really enjoyed the grains and pumpkin. Pub is downstairs, restaurant upstairs. This is a nice German/Austrian/Swiss place. Ordered the cheese fondue as an appetizer, which was good but not too authentic. The cheese seemed to be heavily based on cream cheese and flour. It's hard to find a mix of cheeses that together make a nice and creamy fondue; I wish they had tried to pull that off. Main course was Wiener Schnitzel with a nice Hacker-Pschorr Hefeweizen from tap. The meat was nice and tender with a crunchy crust. Spätzle on the side were fantastic. This was by far the best at the Banff springs hotel (we went to 4 restaurants). Sit upstairs for a nicer/dressier experience than the bar downstairs. Had amazing fondue, wine, and fresh local trout. A big hit for me and my husband on our honeymoon. We went back the last night for dessert after a not so great meal elsewhere. Highly recommend. After dinner go downstairs for a beer the bartender is awesome (forgot his name but he was from the east coast and super nice)! read more

Wanted to go for a steak. The only one on the menu was an 18 ounce that cost $58. Settled for the cheeseburger. First bite covered my hand in grease. Flavour was quite bland and the fries were just regular frozen fries. $24 for that. Not very impressed, especially for a high-end hotel. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because the server was really good. Also, Try to take part in the trivia night. The host was really nice, but the sound system was so horrible I could only hear about half of what was going on so I just gave up playing. read more

This was a unique place to go near Banff Springs Hotel. They have a nice patio overlooking the golf course. Food was good, service was not so much. Staff is friendly but slow... I ordered another drink and never received it and it was still charged in the bill. She revered the charges on that drink though. The only disappointing experience I had while staying at the Fairmont Banff Springs was dinner at this restaurant. The smell when we walked in should have told us something. The entry and pub were dirty. The diningroom was nice enough, but the waiter was dressed in a dirty vest. He was the only staffperson with a rotten attitude that we encountered at this resort.. Three of the four entrees should have been sent back. Two veal dishes were dry and tasteless. The 3rd entry was elk, I think, It was tough - in my book elk is always inedible, but my friend likes it. The experience was so bad, we assumed the restaurant is not managed by Fairmont. Had a wonderful dinner at The Terrace in Banff the next night. Go there instead. read more

THIS was a special meal at an exceptional restaurant. The choices are many - although the fondue sets it apart- and the service- ask for Mark, a way above average server!- is amazing. The formal dining room allows for conversation and the total enjoyment of every bite of food. Chef NICK (on Christmas 2013) was there to greet us on our way out - what a nice touch! And I only wish I lived closer. Downstairs in the Pub you feel welcome as soon as you walk in. Server Jasmine and bartender Jackson immediately make you feel at home and treat you exceptionally well. The Pub itself is almost comforting on a winter evening with cozy chairs and tables tucked in nooks and crannies where you can laugh and enjoy you friends or sit and watch the game and cheer on your team. Wish my town had a place for families like this. Bravo! To the entire Waldhaus team. read more

We went here when we stayed at the Banff Springs hotel. They run a shuttle from the front of the hotel to the restaurant, which saves you a cold walk during the winter. We started with the cheese fondue (truffle and alpine farmer), which was very high quality, though you only get chunks of bread. Of the two I would more highly recommend the alpine farmer which comes with cured meat in it. For dinner I had the bison short rib at the recommendation of the waiter, and it was very good. I also tried the beef roulade, which was tasty as well but I preferred the short ribs. I didn't partake in the dessert fondue but the table enjoyed it, and it comes with a wider variety of things to dip in. I took a chance of the beergharita and was rewarded -- give it a look if you like citrus flavors in your beer. I finished up with a Banff Sorings coffee which was warm and yummy. The service was the best we had in Banff. read more

Abysmally limited menu, with questionable portion sizes - one gets a belly-full only by gorging on the included french fries. The kids menu is by far the best deal in the house. The only things worth going for are the views of the valley and the not-quite-so-overpriced beers, which remain a relative bargain at around $10cad for a proper (20oz) pint. Thank the Queen that something in this country remains exempt from the metric system. read more
