Had the Yes Chef many-course dinner experience. I had patio reservations but they were able to accommodate moving us to the speakeasy instead because it was a bit chilly. The speakeasy has a very cool vibe. A few of us enjoyed the interesting cocktail menu- drinks were delicious. Two of us at the table had the vegan dinner, which was phenomenal. A carnivore friend was actually jealous in comparison. Each course was so interesting and different. Many compliments to the chef, and gratitude for being so inclusive. I went to the Deja Vu speakeasy in the back of 4296. The ambiance is super cool. A great place for a drink. The food was good albeit overpriced. But the main problem I had was that the things they said are gluten free are not !!!!!!!!!! They fry things in the same fryer as gluten and then call it gluten free. Easily one of the best tasting menus I have ever had for the best value as well. For four of us, they brought out 10 courses + an amuse-bouche, and we each got a cocktail as well. Highlights: - Tempura shrimp - Pork belly: fruit flavor mixed with an excellent spicy powder - Scallops - Burrata and pears - Soft eggs and caviar - Mashed potatoes with corn and truffle - Veggie crab wrap I didn't personally love every dish (for example, the halloumi didn't impress, a chateaubriand is always fairly flavorless - not the fault of the kitchen, and while it was funny, I thought the chex mix felt like a gimmick), but to have 7 courses be excellent is incredibly impressive. I've been back in the states for a few weeks and I'm still thinking of my dining experience. While on a girls trip, we came in and sat at the bar for the vegan tasting menu. Immediately we were met with warm welcomes, an incredible ambiance, and smells of delicious food. The service was impeccable, but not in a snooty, rigid way, it was relaxed, and personable with dishes showcasing the chefs skills and local ingredients. As someone who works in the Industry and has eaten all over the world, 4296 is easily one of the best meals I've ever eaten. We were beside ourselves by the end of the meal haha! This was by far our favorite restaurant during our visit to Canmore/Banff/Calgary. Hats off to the chef! We ate here 2 nights in a row and stuffed our faces until it hurt. Just the pure thought in taking the time to put together a progressive, 10 course vegetarian tasting menu that was so creative and so far from the standard "cauliflower steak" was pure brilliance. Cute and hip little spot with friendly servers. We really appreciated the creativities and thoughts put into these dishes and drinks. They're definitely somewhat unique for a small town like Canmore but most flavors just weren't it for us. From the ingredients of the drinks to the food, they were very extravagant (lots of truffles) though the final products looked better than they tasted. Still, the table's favorite was the Chateaubriand (steak!) followed by the spring rolls. The steak was beautifully cooked and being immersed in brown butter was a great idea. We (4) went with the $115 chef choice and maybe we should have done a la cart instead. DESSERTS? The two desserts served might have brought this review to a 2 stars but let's be nice. Got the tasting menu ($128 CAN) which was overall quite good, and came with 8 dishes. Some standouts were the crispy egg with caviar and the steak dish, which was so tender and perfectly cooked. The steak tartare was also very good and got a lot of the flavors down. Overall though I felt like the portion sizes were too large (we were both overstuffed by the end) and some of the dishes were on the heavy side. It felt like there was a lot of salt, sauce, and oil - for example, in the pork belly in char siu sauce and in the bread dish with burrata and peaches. I get that some oil is needed, but it felt pretty heavy at times. There was also some strong spiciness in some of the dishes. Service quality also dropped off at the end and we waited a while for our last two courses to come out, mainly because our server was spending a lot of time chatting with the people at the table next to us, to the point where the bartender had to go in to get some of the food. Next time would recommend the a la carte instead of the tasting menu for better portion control. read more

We opted for the vegan tasting, which was clever, surprising, and, notable for a tasting, filling! Beautiful quaint little speakeasy bar. Everything is lit up purple. There is seating at the bar and along the wall behind the bar. There is a couch set with seating and that's it. I'd say about 15 people and it would be crowded. The menu is very eclectic and for foodies. We decided to share everything. You are to order everything at once and they decide how it is going to come out. We ordered like 5 dishes among the 4 of us. I didn't think it was enough food esp since I didn't like everything that was ordered. But I ended up being ok. They are small plates. So we got like 3ish bites of everything. The eggrolls made your mouth numb from the Asian pepper which I didn't like. Everything has lots of flavor. The peach desert was my favorite as was everyone else's I believe. I turn 40 tomorrow and I can say without hesitation that this was one of the best dining experiences of my entire life. We sat at Bar Deja Vu, a speakeasy bar with an amazing ambiance. William, our bartender, was a genius. Him and a coworker created the entire list of drinks from scratch. Watching him work was like watching Picasso paint. Then came the food. From there, our experience somehow got even better. We ordered several small plates and each dish was better than the last. My wife and I boyh loved how we could tell that each dish was specifically created for a purpose. There was no generic options on the menu. Even the "garlic bread" is not a typical version! I couldn't tell you most of the ingredients of what I ate, but everything was amazing. I'm mad that I did all this research on places to eat in Canmore and none mentioned 4296 or the Bar Deja Vu, so I'm changing that now! I came in with very high hopes of this place as it came much recommended by my sister-in-law so I was really looking forward to it. It's a small restaurant, so reservations are important. The menu is family-style (sharing) and it's a mostly plant-forward menu with a few seafood/meat options. I got violet hour for a drink which was light and refreshing and had lots of yuzu which I loved. My boyfriend got the coffee cocktail, can't remember the name, but he felt it was pretty bland and just tasted like cold coffee, wasn't a fan. We were told that 3-4 dishes (one/two small, one medium, one large) would be a good size for the two of us and to pick 4 if we're extra hungry. We decided to get the garlic bread, hand 'crab' rolls, thai tuna tataki and wagyu steak and frites. The garlic bread was delicious and was made with Le fournil baguette (if you know you know), they didn't skimp out on the garlic butter and was loaded with shredded parmesan on top which made it even better. The 'crab' rolls where phenomenal!! It was made with shredded hearts of palm and you truly could not tell the difference. I would say it was my favourite bite of the evening, highly recommend it. The tuna tataki was also quite tasty! I felt the passionfruit was a bit overpowering but it was still good nonetheless. For the large plate, we got the wagyu steak and frites and decided to be extra and get the added on the truffle service and the jumbo prawns because we were celebrating that evening. We both had high hopes for the steak, but unfortunately we both felt it fell a little flat. It was cooked well, but it wasn't really anything mind-blowing. Even though the server shredded a lot of truffle on, it was pretty subtle as well and we barely tasted it. It was a bit of a waste to be honest which is a shame. The miso/peppercorn sauce it came with was very subtle and to be honest, didn't taste like much. It came with a lot of frites and they were okay, I was hoping they would be a little more crispy though. The service we had was great and our server was polite and attentive. Final thoughts was the plant/vegetarian dishes were knocked out of the park so I would probably lean more towards those dishes next time I come back. read more

I'm so excited to have stumbled upon 4296 for our last meal in Canmore/Banff! Our trip ended on such a high note. My party of 3 didn't have a reservation, but we went early and they were able to seat us in patio/outside area. The dishes here are meant for sharing, so my party ordered a few items including: 1) Crispy Egg - Absolutely enjoyed this more than I was expecting. The nice crispy exterior paired with the unique aioli was a great starting dish. 2) Prawn Tempura - I usually don't care for Prawn Tempura in general, but this would be an exception. The jumbo prawns were so juicy. More importantly, they made the batter just right and didn't overcoat the shrimp. The shrimp was still the star of the show! 3) Rainbow "Poke" - I was a little skeptical because this dish was vegetarian, so there's no real fish. However, this was one of my favorite dishes. They say you eat with your eyes and this was an absolutely beautiful dish! The "ahi tuna" and "salmon" looked so real, but was made of seaweed! When paired with all the other components (edamame, cucumber, mango, passion fruit gel, rice, shogun sauce), you are really reminded of a traditional poke. If it's on the menu next time, I'm definitely ordering this again! 4) Beef Tartare - this was a very unique take on a deconstructed hamburger that I wasn't expecting. The flavors are definitely reminiscent of hamburger and the beef tartare was fresh. Solid dish! The outside patio didn't have too much decor, but the interior felt comfortable. I would definitely recommend a reservation early if you want to have a table inside. As mentioned, this was one of my favorite meals of my short vacation! I'll definitely want to come here again! I'm very picky with quality and flavors and this did not disappoint whatsoever. The drinks were also fantastic. We had the chefs choice which was A LOT of food but good if you're hungry. The cucumber/ radish salad, shrimp, crab rolls, and the chateaubriand were out of this world! I don't eat gluten and I minimize dairy and they accommodated flawlessly. Largely a vegetarian/vegan menu, this one was over the top excellent. Our waiter recommended two dishes per diner and we exceeded this by one. It was one too many. The food took forever to come out as they only have one or two staff in the kitchen. The bill also took more than 20 minutes to arrive when the restaurant itself is quite small. Some of the dishes were quite good and very unique so I give credit for that. The drinks were okay, not great. However I would not recommend the paella, it was extremely salty. The wagyu is not up to par either and not worth the price. I would only recommend ordering the crispy eggs and the cheese peach dish in my photos. read more

This is my favourite restaurant ever! My husband and I got the Chefs Choice option on our anniversary and everything we ate was quite honestly the favourite thing I've ever eaten. Each dish surpassed the last! We came back with friends and Deja Vu, everything was as delicious as I remembered. I can't recommend Chef Blake and his incredible menu and culinary skills enough!
