One roll had perfectly grilled pieces on top with avocado that added a nice smoky flavor, while the other had a great crunchy texture that balanced everything out really well. I also ordered what I believe was a matcha drink, and it paired perfectly with the meal. It was smooth, refreshing, and a nice contrast to the richness of the sushi. Everything tasted high quality and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the whole place had a great vibe. I got the Maui Wauwi roll and the miso glazed beef ribs. The food came out pretty quick. The sushi roll was OK, but I wasn't expecting much. The beef ribs were a lot bigger than I expected. It came with 3 rib bones which each had a lot of meat. The sauce is pretty sweet and can get overpowering if you dip too much into the meat. Food overall was alright. It's on the saucier side and I find the pieces of fish on it are scrawny compared to when they serve sashimi. 3 stars because this place is all about the ambiance, and I really appreciated that. Beautiful mid-century millennial vibes. Warm cozy fires. Karaoke rooms available for large groups with high minimum spends. However, when it comes to the food, I've got issues. The happy hour menu boasts several discounted (half price) sushi rolls, which sound great. However, in execution, they are flooded with mayonnaise (not included in the menu's ingredients). This adds so much extra salt and oil to the sushi that it drowns out the true flavor of the fish. For the first time in my life, I couldn't finish my sushi, and I had no desire to eat any leftovers. Also, reservations are not required, but they definitely help (and require a credit card reservation). If you show up for happy hour, get there early, becasue the space fills up fast! read more

I can only speak to the sushi, as that's all we ordered, but unfortunately it was very underwhelming. My family has been eating sushi for many years in many different cities and countries, so we have a good sense of what to expect. The sushi rice was significantly overcooked, almost to the consistency of a paste. The fish also wasn't cut into the typical slices or chunks you'd expect, in several rolls it seemed chopped and mashed, which resulted in an unusual texture. The rolls were wet and just fell apart. Overall, the flavors just seemed off. We ended up eating only about half of what we ordered before deciding to leave. I even mentioned to our server that we didn't think the food was very good. Another issue was how the food was served. We were told dishes come out "as they're ready," but for a table where everyone ordered at the same time, this made for a poor dining experience. One person's meal arrived almost immediately, another's came about 10 minutes later, and another 5-10 minutes after that. It made the meal feel disjointed, with some people eating while others were still waiting. There were a few other disappointments as well. My daughter's room-temperature water contained a noodle which is gross. In the end the server did remove one of our cocktails from the bill, which we appreciated. The biggest issue is the value. The prices are quite high, and at that level I expect excellent quality. Unfortunately, the food was closer to a D than an A. We spent a week visiting Banff and had several outstanding meals elsewhere. Sadly, this was the most disappointing dining experience of our trip. read more

We liked this place so much, we went twice during our short trip at Banff. There was so much variety for our wants from steak to ramen, that left us satisfied. We were surprised the ramen was pretty decent for a place like this. The interior felt very modern and aesthetically pleasing so it was unassuming that they will have decent ramen. The prices are quite reasonable for what they are. The service here is superb and got to enjoy the experience of dining here. I also like how they bring teapots for tea. Located in downtown Banff, it looked appealing from the reviews online and from the decor outside and inside. It does have a cute feel. Food was good, I'm from California tho and this was not comparable to the food there. The sushi is overpriced but nothing is really good out here in Canada. Our favorite was the chefs roll and the lobster fried rice. We were told the salmon spicy roll was good, it wasn't, the rice is compacted and had a weird taste with very little salmon. They do have a kids menu which all the kids enjoyed, their fave was the karage and potato fries and grilled chicken and rice. It was juicy enough and flavorful, just didn't add the mayo since kids just prefer ketchup on the side. Now service is where I wasn't a huge fan of. One of the bussers not even the server got annoyed that SHE forgot to give my kid crayons for their kids menu. I asked for it twice bc she forgot and the second time she basically threw the crayons in front of my daughter. Also we sat on this pretty round fireplace table BUT the table was like a walkway behind me with this wall so everyone passing me was behind me to get thru the other side of the room. It was such a weird setup!! The waiters and waitresses and even people going in and out of the kitchen and bathroom had to literally pass behind me on a small section. So dumb and ruined the experience. Our actual server was nice so I felt bad bc he was good. But the dumb busser and even the front desk lady gave attitude otherwise I'd give a 2 for poor service. Love the decor - the restaurant is really modern and has lots of natural light from the street-facing window. The hostess was friendly and we were seated quickly even though it was a weekend. The menu is small but has a bit of everything. Everyone enjoyed their food. Our favourite dish was the scallops which were absolutely phenomenal, but was prepared completely differently from the description in the menu. I came here with my partner and we each got the omakase and a smoked salmon sushi roll to share. The omakase consisted of mostly warm items and they were all pretty decent. The smoked salmon roll was a bit disappointing since it only had cucumber on the inside and we couldn't taste the horseradish (we love horseradish!). The service here was great! We informed our server of my partner's food allergy, and she made sure to let us know during each round of the omakase that the dish was prepped with the allergen in mind. We made a reservation a month ago when literally everything was available n showed open. The extremely rude front desk lady (curly hair) sat us at the very end of the bar in a dingy spot. We told her we had the dining room reservation and she was unbelievably rude. We later showed her the OpenTable page and she moved us without even uttering as much a sorry or even showing any remorse for her behavior. OMG, SUCH GOOD VIBES!! I was shocked by how beautiful and fun this restaurant was because my friends was somehow able to get us a reservation for 8 people right before peak dinner hours, and they sat us inside of a private Karaoke room. The decor was gorgeous, and the restaurant is so clean. Despite how busy they are, food and drinks came out right away. Staff and service are SO sweet and kind, and I honestly can't say enough good things about Hello Sunshine. My friends and I are all Asian, and we truly did not expect top notch Asian food, but wow. A pretty nice Japanese restaurant in downtown Banff. We shared a little boat (6 pieces of sashimi) that were beautifully cut, fresh and tasty. Our group made a reservation for 6, and it was the right choice. The restaurant was fairly busy for a Sunday evening. We each got a ramen dish and split a couple of sushi rolls. We got the Maui Wowie roll, and the chef's roll. The fish tasted really fresh and buttery. I personally got the tonkatsu ramen and the non-alcoholic matcha colada - the matcha was a little more on the grassy side but it was overall a very refreshing drink. I was originally given the wrong ramen dish but the team at Hello Sunshine immediately approached us and fixed the issue without a problem. The marinated soft boiled egg was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I could have probably ate more of the egg - I would recommend ordering another! The noodles felt fresh and house made, they were perfectly cooked. The broth was light and flavorful as well too. I would definitely come back and try more of the food. The concept of the restaurant is really cool, they had these seats that you could sit around a fire pit and I bet that would have been extremely nice during the winter. We highly suggest making a reservation as soon as you can, no matter your party size. Everything we tried was delicious, the restaurant was busy and it's on the louder side, but we could still hear each other speaking. We arrived just in time for happy hour and the menu has something for every taste bud. The saki was perfect and it just complimented everything else. A great restaurant to visit in Banff. It's located in downtown Banff. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, and we had a hard time deciding. We ended up ordering a variety of dishes. For appetizers, we enjoyed all the starter dishes, especially the scallop carpaccio, seasonal salad, and yakitori skewer. For main courses, we liked the poke bowl the most. The dish looked beautiful, the portion was generous, and the ingredients were very refreshing. The service for the other entrees was quite slow for some reason, so we had to wait a while. Literally the best happy hour we have EVER been to in our lives, and if we weren't on vacation wanting to try other spots, we were tempted to be here every night for dinner. Decent sushi in the downtown area of Banff. The inside is has a nice atmosphere and good vibe. They have a good bar area and you can also dine at the sushi bar as well. We made a reservation and realized we had barely missed their happy hour! Happy hour is from 4-5 everyday with very select cocktails and a few sushi items but not the complete menu. It can be pricy to dine here so happy hour could be the way to go. I did try the expresso martini which was good but small for the price point and it is not on happy hour. Crispy avocado roll tasted really fresh and hit the spot after a long hiking day. I personally loved the Karaage served over type of cabbage green with sauce on top. It's a chicken thigh so the chicken is really juicy, with a fresh squeeze of lemon on top, this dish pops! The dragon roll included tempura shrimp, avocado, BBQ eel, cucumber, tobiko,and sansho pepper and it was a really filling roll. Service here is kind of weird, you can get a really friendly person or a really off putting server or hostess, we experienced both. Also the people working near the sushi bar area hangout and have really inappropriate conversations and it seems like they are drinking so it's probably just hit or miss depending on the day. read more

Is it crazy to say my fiancé and I came here three times during our seven-day trip to Banff? It was that good. The menu truly satisfied everything we were craving--sushi, ramen, and steak all done exceptionally well. The sushi was incredibly fresh, the oysters were out of this world, and the steak was perfectly cooked and absolutely to die for. On top of that, the service was amazing and genuinely friendly, and the drink menu was extensive and delicious. A must-visit (or three).
