Leslie also informed us of the complimentary bikes to use if we wanted to explore the town and how we were just in time to enjoy the complimentary wine and cheese from 4-5:30 in the common area. We grabbed our free bubbly, the vanilla bath salts for my wife to enjoy later, and proceeded to enjoy the cheese and assorted treats on the outdoor patio overlooking Dana Point. No better way to unwind! Pro tip: NEVER EVER SKIP THE FRESH BAKED COOKIES! The property is the perfect size to remain quaint like a bed and breakfast but big enough that you don't feel obligated to know each person coming and going. I would admit being in our mid 40's, we were on the younger side of guests during our stay, but this was a welcome surprise for us as we were looking for a quiet getaway for the evening for our 9 year wedding anniversary. The room was 212 which is an ADA accessible room but this I believe was provided at the special request of having a bathtub for my wife who values her baths on her getaways! The room faces the parking lot but this is a small sacrifice for what the true payoff was which was the special request... The giant jacuzzi tub which did not disappoint. It was large enough to fit two adults (not that we tried or anything *wink wink). The jets worked great and my wife raved about them. The room came with luxurious robes and slippers and all bath products were either local or unique brand. The room also came with a fireplace that was gas which started with the flip of a light switch. Another beautiful touch. It is always hard to find a bed that is comfortable enough while away from home as we are spoiled by our sleep number at home but this bed did the trick (which most chain or corporate hotels cannot accomplish!). The linens were soft and the room came with extra pillows and blankets on hand without having to ask for more. The complementary breakfast buffet in the morning was not your standard spread. It felt more refined and focused on the details. It was not your scrambled eggs from powder. It was two sunny side up eggs cooked to perfection. It wasn't generic underripe fruit, it was perfectly ripe fruit with an assortment of sides. My wife raved about the yogurt and toppings as did I about the oatmeal and toppings. Overall this could not have been a better short 1 night getaway for my wife and I to enjoy away from the hectic everyday life. It truly felt like we slowed down time and the blue lantern Inn accomplished all we needed in having a successful start to our anniversary celebrations.

The staff was welcoming and very friendly throughout the stay. I booked a king bed with harbor views and the room and bathroom were good sizes, with lots of room to move around. The beds were comfortable as well. It's a very cute hotel with amazing views. The only downsides were the walls are a little thin so I could hear the customer in the next room coughing, and the breakfast was not that good. But there are tons of great restaurants within walking and driving distance, so I would recommend going there. It's also 4 minutes drive from the harbor if you plan to do whale/ dolphin watching. I would recommend this hotel and would go back.

This time, my family took a trip to Dana Point over the 4th of July holiday weekend…read more I heard that one of my brothers had booked our hotel in advance, and this was the place we stayed. He reserved a suite, so it had a separate living room and a very spacious bedroom. The bathroom also featured a whirlpool bathtub. Lately, I've been completely hooked on the FIFA World Cup, so as soon as we arrived on Friday, July 3rd, I had a great time watching the Argentina vs. Cabo Verde match. The suite had two TVs--one in the living room and another in the bedroom--which made it very convenient and comfortable to watch the game. Breakfast was included with our stay, so we enjoyed breakfast every morning on the first floor during our two-night stay. The breakfast selection was quite good, including waffles, bagels, donuts, sliced bread, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, yogurt, and a variety of coffee options such as mocha, latte, espresso, regular coffee, and decaf coffee. While we were having breakfast, I noticed there wasn't any cream cheese for the bagels. I asked one of the staff members who was restocking the breakfast items, and both the male and female staff members were incredibly friendly and quickly brought some out for us. We really appreciated their excellent service, and my mom left them a tip afterward. Those were the highlights of our stay, but there were also a few things that could have been better. First, as soon as we checked into our room, there was a strange smell inside. Because of that, we kept the balcony door and the windows open most of the time to air the room out. Second, after checking in on July 3rd, we naturally expected our room to be cleaned the following day. Before leaving in the morning to enjoy the recreational activities around Dana Point, my mom even left a $10 tip in the room for housekeeping. However, when we returned that afternoon, the room hadn't been cleaned at all. My brother called the front desk, and they told us there was no housekeeping service on the 4th of July because it was a holiday. We've stayed at many hotels while traveling over holiday weekends, but this was the first time we'd ever been told that there was no housekeeping because it was Independence Day. Later that afternoon, before heading out again to ride the local trolley, I asked another front desk employee about the housekeeping service. Instead of saying there was no housekeeping because of the holiday, the employee asked for our room number and then asked whether we had requested housekeeping that morning. I explained that we hadn't requested it in the morning but had called about an hour earlier, and the room still hadn't been serviced. The employee told us they could at least replace our towels, so we thanked them. As a result, we ended up sleeping for two nights on the same bed without the sheets ever being changed. Another issue I noticed was that the bathroom exhaust fan vent was extremely dirty. Most guests probably wouldn't notice it unless they looked closely, but it stood out to me right away. I felt it was worth mentioning. Those were the two main disappointments during our stay. On the positive side, the hotel's location was absolutely fantastic. Dana Point Harbor Beach was only about a five-minute walk away, making it incredibly easy to get to the beach. Directly across the street, there were plenty of restaurants and shops, including Starbucks, McDonald's, pizza places, Thai restaurants, and many other dining options. The location truly couldn't have been better. I later heard that my brother had considered booking a Marriott or another hotel, but he ultimately chose this one because it offered a spacious suite and was the closest hotel to the beach. Last year in May, we stayed at Murrieta Hot Springs. Although it was quite expensive at around $1,000 per night, the hotel was exceptionally clean, housekeeping was provided even during the holiday, and both the views and overall atmosphere were outstanding. This hotel's location was truly excellent, but I do wish the housekeeping and overall cleanliness had been better. That said, every staff member we encountered was friendly and welcoming, which definitely left us with a positive impression. cf) Parking is $25 per night at this hotel.

This is a tough one to rate…read more This hotel was recommended to us by friends and family so I booked it before reading reviews. A few days before going to our trip, I read the reviews about the construction. This definitely was not disclosed upon booking and I was disappointed. But I wanted to give it a chance. We arrived and immediately can see the construction that is being done. I understand that renovations have to happen but I do think it's absolutely absurd to not disclose it during booking and to charge the insane amount that they did for a holiday weekend. Valet guys were nice but again, prices insane. I could barely understand the lady who checked us in as it was very loud in the makeshift lobby but I took my keys and figured "I got this". Definitely did not. We got lost looking for our room as we had to go through this makeshift tunnel through the construction towards our room. We were promised a partial ocean view. We got that, and a full on construction view. We were disappointed but decided to go to the pool...as we are walking to the pool, lost again. This man approaches us. Introduces himself as the Head Manager of the Hotel and gives us directions, apologizes for the construction and even helps us find our way to the restaurant and pool area. Nice. It didn't stop there. This manager, wow! The next day was Fourth of July and he was working in a SUIT! Full on tie and suit. Delivering drinks, moving loungers, bringing towels to people, running with furniture. Running with food. He made sure that everyone was taken care of. Got what they needed, and all the guests were happy. Absolutely amazing! I've never seen that kind of hospitality anywhere! I tried making a reservation at one of the restaurants for dinner and arrived 30 minutes before opening and was told that they were booked until 7pm (it was currently 4:30pm). I asked if walk-ins were welcome and was told after 7pm because she had 'hundreds of reservations'. I was complaining to my daughter that I couldn't get a reservation when the head manager overheard our conversation and helped me make one. Suddenly a table for 3 became available at 6pm. We arrived, it was not busy at all. I don't know who that lady was that said she had "hundreds of reservations". While I am upset at the hotel for not lowering their rates (pool area was crammed, not enough sitting area) I do appreciate the hard work that the Head Manager put in to ensure guests left happy. I hope to one day return when the renovation is done but I do think it should be disclosed. Don't overbook, get more lawn chairs. Also pro tip, add TV's to the cabanas. We went during World Cup season, there was only one tv outside and everyone was crammed around to watch the game under the sun and the glaring screen. 3 starts for the hotel. 5 starts for the head manager! Amazing job! I would be back and follow you to whatever hotel you go to!

I fortunately, did not see any bed bugs, as did some others who've left reviews, so that's a plus! My room was actually pretty clean, as were the hallways. Our deck faced the front parking lot and had a big, thick juniper right in front of it that gave us EXCELLENT privacy, so I LOVED that part. There's a lot of construction going on across the street (Casitas) right now and I was awakened at 7AM to the sound of jackhammering, but that's not the hotel's fault and it's only temporary. And yes, the breakfast is mainly carbs, so I abstained. Also, you have to pay $15 to park every night, which is a little scammy, but hey... The best part of the place is the killer location right near the harbor and Doheny, and for that alone, I can put up with a lot. For the price, I would say it's not that bad at all. It's more than a decent value. C'mon, at this price, you're not going to get the Ritz-Carlton.

Review addressed to Stephanie M., Business Owner…read more Hi Stephanie, I have never left a negative review, as I understand the impact it can have on a business. However, this situation requires immediate attention. There are multiple recent reviews referencing bed bugs, including one within the past month. During my stay, I observed conditions that raised that same concern. I need confirmation that the property has been recently inspected and treated, as this is a serious health and safety issue. More concerning was my experience with your General Manager, Sammy, which closely mirrors another recent review describing similar behavior. I approached him to discuss the disappearance of my controlled medication and approximately $300 worth of personal care items from my room or the hallway. He dismissed the theft and would not allow me to explain the situation, check lost and found, or respond in a meaningful way. Instead, he focused on a separate issue involving two room keys with different room numbers being slid under my door (photo attached), which I had already reported two days prior. He repeatedly insisted this "never happens here," said "maybe this isn't the place for you," told me "someone is following YOU," and claimed it had "never happened in the entire course of his career." He then told me to "call the police," stated he could "not police his hotel," and concluded by sliding a note with the sheriff's number toward me. The implication throughout the interaction was that I was somehow responsible for being followed and targeted on the property he was managing, which is deeply concerning. I have no criminal history and no prior experience of this nature. It seemed that the room key incident discredited me to the extent that he was unwilling to listen or communicate in a respectful or constructive manner. This was unprofessional, unacceptable, and reflected a lack of accountability for guest safety. For clarity, the only time my belongings were in the hallway was due to repeated trips to the front desk to "recharge" room keys that were not functioning properly. During that same stay, having additional keys appear under my door, combined with missing items, created a situation that felt genuinely unsafe. To ensure the missing medication was properly documented, I filed a report with law enforcement. The responding officer noted that incidents like this at the Marina Inn are not uncommon, which makes the lack of appropriate response even more concerning. I do want to acknowledge that I had positive interactions with other staff members, including a young man working evenings and multiple morning front desk representatives, who were helpful and respectful. That contrast made the management response stand out even more. I have over 10 years of experience working in hospitality, from Nick's Restaurants to Marriott International, and I understand how situations like this should be handled. This fell below basic standards of safety, professionalism, and accountability. If you review my history on Google or Yelp, you'll see that I do not leave negative reviews. This is the first time I've felt it necessary. I was in a vulnerable situation and was met with dismissal rather than support, which directly impacted my sense of safety during my stay. I am requesting a prompt response addressing the security concerns, management's handling, and confirmation that the property has been properly inspected and treated regarding the bed bug issue. I would appreciate a timely response so this can be addressed directly before I determine my next steps.

The night we checked in, it was very windy, and it was raining. It was very cold outside. We quickly turned the heater on in our room. It just blew cold air. My family and I were freezing. We called the front desk and told them about the heater not working. He offered us tea and extra blankets. We told him that it was not going to suit us. He then said that they only had one extra room left and it was on the third floor. My Dad and I decided to go up to the room and see if the heater was working properly. The heater didn't work in that room either! Plus as my Dad and I were waiting for the heater to kick on we heard a banging on one of the windows. I went over and pulled the curtain and saw that a huge palm tree leaf was banging into the window every time the wind blew. Even if the heater was working, we wouldn't be able to sleep through that banging. Due to no other options we had to stay in the room provided and brave out the night and put on extra blankets on our beds, and even that wasn't enough to keep the cold out. My family and I also felt cold drafts in our rooms. We had a two bedroom suit. We discovered that the windows were letting in a draft. These windows are far below average. In the morning we called the front desk to ask if our heater can be fixed. I was told that the engineer would be by once he clocked in. He later came by and took a look at the system and played around with the heater. He informed me that he doesn't know how to fix it and the guy that does know about these systems would be in at around 2 PM. He also advised me that this isn't the first time that they have had problems with this heater in this room. At that point that made us quite upset. The hotel staff/management knew that this room had heater/air issues, but they still chose to rent it to us. We then called and spoke to the new manager of the hotel, whose name is Juan. He apologized and said that he would work on trying to find us another two-bedroom suite. Later that afternoon, we were told that a room had been found and was ready for us to move into. We were in the process of moving out of our house, so my Dad was at the house assisting the movers while I was at the hotel tending to my mother and my mentally handicapped sister. We had brought a lot of stuff with us as we planned on staying for several months while we are waiting for our new house to be built. It was up to me to move all of our stuff on a luggage cart to the new room which was clear across the other side of the hotel. Housekeeping had come to our door and asked my Mom when we were leaving. My Mom told her that we would hopefully be out within a half an hour. She then said ok and rolled her eyes at my Mom. In the meantime I was moving as fast as I could haulling all of our stuff to the new room. Housekeeping came back and started bugging us again about getting out of the room. We told them that we were still working. My Mom then called the front desk and informed them that we don't want housekeeping to keep harassing us about us leaving the room, as we were working on transferring our stuff as fast as we could. When I was about halfway through, the front desk then started calling and asking us when we would be leaving the room. At this point my mom and I were quite frustrated. I had to call my Dad to come back to the hotel to assist me in the transfer as these people were harassing us. My Dad finally arrived after I was about to drop dead from exhaustion. As my dad started to help, Housekeeping came back yet again. That's when my Dad told them to leave us alone and that were working as fast as we could, and that the heater didn't work in our room and this wasn't our issue to begin with. Juan the manager came down shortly after this with one of his front desk people and asked us about our progress leaving the room. We told him that we are moving as quickly as we could. He then volunteered to help. He took one cart of stuff for me and put the cart in our room and left it. Didn't take anything off the cart. That was when we told him that we will take it from here. Juan came down yet again and harassed us about leaving the room. By the time we had finished we were physically and mentally exhausted due to being rushed out of the room. What was the point of rushing us out, they couldn't rent the room anyway with a broken heater. We had more words with Juan, and he finally waived one night of our stay. My card was double-charged at check-in. Juan, along with the other front desk people, claimed that they should fall off. Days went by and the charges remained. Had to call my bank to dispute charges. Staff and management are unprofessional and lackadaisical. Have to be prompted numerous times to get something done. Rooms are dirty and unkept. Our stay was for 5 months, but left after 6 days and found other lodging.

The other hotel has always been decent, so we thought with the "Plus endorsement" that this place would be ok. We were pretty disappointed with this location when it came to cleanliness, the plank flooring in the room was very dirty, it's a light brown colored floor, so it seemed clean at first. IMO I think that house keepers skip mopping most of the time since the dirt isn't visible, the floor made my feet black. I used a wet piece of tissue paper and a disinfectant wipe and cleaned a section to see how dirty. The next morning I went to the office and expressed my concern, I showed who I assumed was a manager the dirty paper that I used on the floor and requested that housekeeping mop our room while we were out, we returned later, and honestly I'm not even sure if it was done, still dirty when I retested. The room needed painting in spots and baseboards were filthy and also needed painting. The coffee condiment tray also wasn't clean. On Saturday, after not getting out on time to get our room cleaned on Friday, we made sure to get out earlier, as a matter of fact the housekeeper was right next door when we left our room, the cart was right outside our door, we returned during the afternoon and found that our room had not been cleaned. We ran out of hand soap and also towels. I have nothing bad to say about the employees that we had contact with, they were very nice. The breakfast was pretty good, they actually cooked omelets on Saturday and Sunday. The location is nice and from rm 303 you have a very good view of the beach/ocean, we met some nice people that were guests. So in conclusion, I probably wouldn't stay at this location again unless I was in a jamb, but I'd probably bring a mop, LOL.
