I met Rob at Club One in Oakland. I had seen him there several times over the course of a few months doing chair massage. I am pretty picky about who I let touch me - so it took me a while before I finally forked over the dough and plopped down in his chair. I only did this because I saw his little sign that said "chiropractor". HA! good deal - he must know something about the back. Wow. I was amazed at his ability to adjust me and use different techniques to get my spine to relax. Long story short - I immediately booked an appointment to go see him for further work. I have now been seeing him for a few weeks and I can tell you that I feel much freer and more mobile. I have a long history of working with other chiropractors who were very good - so I kinda went into this with some high expectations - and I was not disappointed. Rob is very caring and genuinely is interested in making his patients feel better over the long haul. I highly recommend him - especially if you are a first timer - he is thoughtful and listens to you and will offer suggestions of therapies outside of his core competency if he thinks they would benefit you. Finally - cost is always a factor as most insurances don't fully cover chiropractic. He is very affordable! I've been going to Rob for a couple years now..I had never been to a chiropractor before and was a bit nervous about someone else cracking my joints. I couldn't turn my head one day and was at gold's gym unable to get a good workout in. I saw him there and asked someone in the locker room about him. Long story short, he fixed me! He makes me feel comfortable during the adjustment as well. He has never hurt me..I've been to another chiropractor..it was free with a membership, and this other guy asked me what I needed adjusted and wound up putting me in pain during and after the adjustment..Rob knows what to adjust because he checks you out first, and figures out what is off..he knows his stuff. Some people say once you go to a chiropractor you have to go all the time or else you are worse off than when you started, I disagree. I go when I feel I need to, sometimes it isn't for a long time. He is very friendly and just wants to make you feel better. He recommends other treatment options when he feels it is right for you, even if it takes your business away from him for a while. He has great prices and it is well worth it. I won't go to anyone else now that I've found him. He is very clean, as well as his facilities, which is important knowing he just touched some stranger. Dr. Townsend gives great adjustments, and his practice is great if you truly want to walk in to for an adjustment without an appointment. However, if you do make an appointment, it's likely it won't be respected. I made an appointment for this morning. I was there four minutes early. A walk-in had gotten there before me, and was given my appointment time. I was told I would be seen about 10 minutes late. That may not seem like much, but it was ten minutes I didn't have, so I left without my adjustment. Unfortunately, I won't be going back. read more

I am a very athletic person and ended up in his office after suffering from consistent back pain and being depressed as it was starting to hold me back from the things I wanted to do. A month after starting sessions with him I am bassically a brand new woman. I don't have to be constantly paranoid about my back and my body while I work out as there is no more pain and I know that he is keeping me in good shape. Unprofessional. Dr. Townsend was dismissive of my needs when I was in a very vulnerable, painful position. Not what I expected based on the reviews here. I expected him to provide a 30 minute first visit consultation as described on the website and was counting on it - I told him I was nervous as it was my first time being to a chiro. Instead, I was being adjusted within 10 minutes of arrival, and he quickly moved on to the next patient after cracking my back rather intensely. When I experienced severe dizziness and had to lie down in the waiting room afterward while trying to check out, the office manager seemed concerned and told him, and he did not even come and check on me. Dr. Townsend appeared to be more focused on quantity of patients than quality of care. read more

So I did a lil research and came up with a couple of candidates here on yelp. After emailing people I knew, a friend of mine, Kim Vu, told me her cousin saw this guy and a few times and liked him. Do I dare send my lovey to this man, with no prior personal experience of my own and just hearsay? 4 yrs of chiro exp.....hmmmmm? But the fact that he also worked as a CMT was a deal closer....and off he went to meet the man who hopefully could help. Grumpy Bad Back Guy actually came back with a spring in his step with nothing but good things to say about Robert Townsend. He described him as knowledgeable, gentle, personable, and strong. Sometimes, as a person of color (OMG.... here comes the race card!!!!LOL) there is a fear that you will not receive comprehensive care from someone different from you.....(really alot of people have this fear, not only because of race, but sexual orientation, or gender identity, etc.) not only do you want to get treated and treated as a person, but you don't want to make anyone else feel uncomfortable either.....well, if you're looking for someone compassionate regardless of who you are and you're in the east bay, then perhaps this is the Chiro for you. I decided on 4 stars since I didn't see him in person. I'll give him 5 stars once I see him personally. What a nice guy and great chiropractor! He was running the show himself when I got there - and was so laid back, friendly and stress free. I don't know any other doctors who answer their own phoes, process payments and do the chiropractic adjustment. He saw me early and did a great job with the diagnostics and treatment. I've been going to see Dr. Townsend since 2015 or so, when my former chiropractor moved out of the area. And though I miss her, the transition to Walk In Chiro was very easy for me. What I love about Dr. Townsend's practice is that he makes chiropractic available for regular bodily maintenance instead of just chronic pain or accident related injury. (Eureka!) Sometimes I need my neck adjusted because of life stress, not due to an accident, and I don't need x-rays, don't want to pay an arm and a leg or don't want to wait 2 weeks for an appointment like with other chiropractors. I appreciate the ease, the affordability, and the efficiency of appointments at Walk In Chiro. The front desk staff is friendly and always on top of things. And I very much enjoy Dr Townsend's sense of humor. Healing environments need more playfulness... he brings it! I went here recently because I was walking at an angle and in a lot of pain. I have had injuries in the past to my neck, but my back was the problem. I left with the ability to turn my neck to the left and right for the first time in a year without pain, my back has improved and I got some great self care tips. I had paid in advance with my credit card assuming they didn't take my insurance, and the staff even fixed my error by refunding the amount above co-pay without it being a 17 step tedious form filled project. Today was my initial visit with an adjustment, and after a really stubborn L5 -Dr. Townsend finally made some progress-and I haven't felt this limber in a very very long time......I've scheduled followup weekly adjustments and I'm very hopeful for improved progress. I don't rave much about chiropractors but Robert has a way in which he is always pleasant and attentive. Dr. Townsend worked a miracle for me, I had something going on with my lower back that was reaching down into my leg and a few sessions and he had me fixed up. He gives fantastic advice and definitely doesn't try to "sell you a package of treatments" that are ongoing and pricey. He's efficient, and really nice. I liked that he wasn't super agressive my first visit as well. The practice is in a great location and the rates are very reasonable particularly if you have insurance. I have a tricky lower back and recently it went out with a vengeance. The muscle spasms were so painful I could barely get out of bed. Fortunately Robert was able to make a house call and within about a half hour I was on my feet again. Not pain free but his treatment helped a lot and at least got me out of bed and up and around.
