Dear Wally, As a longtime Closter resident, I have always believed in supporting local businesses. That is why I gave Wally's more than one opportunity to earn and keep my business. Unfortunately, after my recent experience, I have decided that I will not be returning. This was the second time I was treated disrespectfully by the same employee behind the counter. After the first incident, I chose to give him the benefit of the doubt. Everyone can have a bad day, and I wanted to continue supporting a local business. However, when I returned, I experienced the same dismissive and unprofessional behavior once again. The interaction was so hostile and discourteous that it left me feeling unwelcome in a place where I was prepared to spend my money. Whether intentional or not, the employee's conduct made me question whether all customers are treated with the same level of respect and courtesy. What makes this situation particularly disappointing is that I was not there to place a small order. I came prepared to purchase approximately $800 worth of food for a Veterans event. Because of the employee's inappropriate behavior, that sale never happened. When I spoke with you directly about the incident, I hoped my concerns would be taken seriously. Instead, I left feeling that the issue was being minimized rather than addressed. I understand the importance of supporting employees, but customers also deserve respect. Professionalism, courtesy, and appreciation for the people who choose to spend their money with your business should be non-negotiable. I was especially surprised when you stated that unless an employee steals money from you, there is little that can be done. From a business perspective, I found that difficult to understand. An employee does not have to take cash from the register to cost a business money. When a customer walks away from an $800 purchase because of how they are treated, the financial loss is real. In this case, the loss extended beyond a single transaction. It included a Veterans event, future business from my family, and future recommendations that would otherwise have gone to Wally's. After this experience, I took the time to read other customer reviews and noticed that several people described similar concerns regarding customer service. While every customer's experience is different, it suggests that my experience may not have been an isolated incident. A business can have the best bagels in town, but great food alone is not enough. Customers remember how they are treated long after they finish their meal. Respect is part of the product. Courtesy is part of the service. Without those things, even the best bagel leaves a bad taste. I rarely write negative reviews, but I believe members of our community deserve an honest account of my experience. I also believe business owners should understand the consequences of allowing poor customer service to continue unchecked. My friend went to order lunch at Wally's and regardless the fact my sandwich was awful, the amount of meat in the sandwich was an insult. It only had 2 pieces of turkey , one broken up piece of cheese and no mayo which was asked for. This disappointment of a sandwich was $12.00. She also ordered hash browns which were not in the bag. She asked for an itemized receipt. The little bit of turkey , and I mean little bit, and the one piece of cheese is a disgrace and they left off the pickle. I was charged an extra $2.00 for the flagel, extra $1.00 for cheese. She also purchased 2 flagels with cream cheese and that cost $8.00 for just a small amount of cream cheese. Worst service you will EVER GET. Food is okay, the employees SUCK! Almost all of them pretend to NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. They get mad when you ask them to make your food, they also get it wrong most of the time. I have had a negative experience almost every time coming here. If I can give them a ZERO rating, I would. If you want a really good bagel or a famous Jersey baconeggandcheese, this is the place for it. The store itself is beautiful and clean. Now you might ask, "Why Michele, are you giving 3 stars if they have such a good product?" My answer to this would be their customer service. There have been times where I have called and hung up on, and the couple of times that I have gone to pick up after getting through, the staff does not go out of their way to ask me a name or anything. There is no "Hi, are you picking up... what can I get for you?" This is extremely frustrating. There have been times where I have waited over 15 minutes when I have picked up after calling. Now, there have been times where I've wanted to go before work, but I know I can't since there is no urgency with the customers. Easily the best bagel in the northern valley. I used to get bagels at the Northvale location every Sunday. The business is definitely geared toward catering and large orders (i.e. a dozen or more). The old place was more focused on individual orders and bagel sandwiches. I think people are upset that times have changed which is why its so low rated. If you want 12 bagels, scalion cream cheese and lox, come here. In terms of bagel choices, I reccomend going egg everything. Something about adding the yolk to the bagel batter is heavenly. I also like having all the different toppings. Obviously they do a great plain bagel, sesame, poppy, etc. In terms of toppings for bagels, you can't go wrong with Taylor ham. Their Taylor ham has the right balance of salty, greasy, etc. In terms of cream cheeses, the scallion cream cheese with lox is always a classic. Super exciting that they have 3 locations. I went to Closter location and a female employee with covered hair was extremely rude. The menu states that if you order 12 bagels you get two for free. I asked for a "dozen" bagels and included my two bagels in my order and she kept insisting that I'm asking for 14 and not 12 and I had to keep telling her that you get two for free but she kept telling me but you said a dozen and 8 plus six is 14 not 12. It seems she didn't know her own store's policy. At the end, she accused me of not treating her as a human being and said "I don't have bagels for you" so I had to walk out. I didn't go to this location I went to the one in River Vale and it's new. It was not a good experience I ordered sandwiches and the price I was charged was not what was listed on the board. I was told that the boards are wrong and that they haven't been changed yet and that they would not honor the price on the board. When I challenged that he told me it what I was asking for was a "discount" --since I was just asking to be charged the listed price on the menu. They said "it's always more," this was my first time at the store and when I called in the order they did not tell me that. And they claimed it was for extra meat... there was one limp sausage patty. This place used to be called Goldberg's, it was delicious and fantastic. I haven't been to Wally's since they opened. Today I went, the service was incredibly mediocre. The place was empty yet I waited a good ten minutes to even be approached. On top of that, when I went to pay, the man asked me three different times what I ordered and every-time I answered he interrupted me with more random questions. They didn't ask if I wanted my bagel toasted so I assumed it would come toasted, the way it did at Goldberg's. Yet I was given a cold, un-toasted bagel with not the best butter. Poorest of customer service!!!! Walk in, gentleman asks me for my order, tell him I need a bunch of bagels and he proceeds to put gloves on to help. So I asked why, and he said there is a service charge but it can be waived if I pay with cash. A service fee at bagel shop? The food is generally good, but many of the employees are clearly not properly trained. They have one slicer, and the counter-person took a rag from I don't know where to wipe it down (appeared to have some cheese residue and I was getting turkey). He then put the turkey on the scale on paper, then lifted the turkey off the scale, removed the paper, and put the turkey directly on what was obviously a filthy scale. There were random sliced meats and cheese behind the counter. After assembling my order, I followed him to the register, where he told me I owed him $10 for the three items. It seems that itemized receipts are something that need to be asked for. Invest in a scale that prints out receipts for each item and tie it into the point of sale system. That way I won't feel as if I'm being ripped off. I wish I could say that my experience today was the exception, but it's more like the rule. Train your employees!! read more

I used to come here for years when it was Goldberg's bagels.. they got sold to wally's and things have never been the same. A few weeks ago ordered a Western Omelette for my boyfriend. Other than the Omelette, we both ate the same thing. That night he got food poisoning (I didn't), he was sick all week. Didn't go back for awhile after that, until i was looking for a place where i can get sliced deli meat sandwiches. Went to get bologna and roast beef. They specifically have on their online menu for the Closter location that they have bologna. When I go to order they are out. Not a big deal, I'll get bologna at the supermarket and just get a roast beef. After going to the market and adding the bologna, I noticed that the roast beef was really small... maybe it was a small chunk of roast beef. I drop off the sandwich.. and get a message asking me what kind of sandwich it is.. I said it's supposed to be roast beef and bologna.. he said nope it's pastrami. Fail number 2.. doubt I will try again for a third failure. Wally's was actually better before they expanded to the 2 store fronts, they were slow, but more accurate. read more
