One other thing I really liked was the smart TV that allowed you to log into your own Hulu, Netflix, etc. I don't see that often at hotels and was happy to spend the night in, catching up on my shows! Only complaint about this place is that they did not seem to take COVID seriously as the woman at the front desk did not have a mask, nor seem to require one of those she was chatting with in the small office.

The room was typical motel, but it was a good size, comfortable and clean. Had no problem with the beds. Free WiFi, cable, typical free coffee packs, shampoo etc. I don't know why some visitors didn't receive the shampoo/soap. We had them. Best of all was the remodeled swimming pool area complete with water slides. Swimming pool was large. This was by far the best swimming pool area of all the hotels we stayed on during our road trip. The kids loved it. Unfortunately, we arrived at the hotel a little late and were only able to take advantage of it for an hour. There were two big negatives. Check in was really slow because their computer system was down. Because of that, the guy tried to charge us normal prices. Fortunately, we had previously printed out all of our reservation information and were able to retain our previous internet price ($80). Second big negative was the included free breakfast. Literally, they provided us with hostess cupcakes and ding dongs for breakfast! Gross. At least they had orange juice, coffee and milk.

Allowed a friend and I to split a glass of wine after doing tastings. This was Friday night. We went back for breakfast/brunch on Sunday! The eggs Benedict were the bomb. 1892 for delicious as well. It was my husband's birthday on 6/09 and I wanted nothing more for on his birthday than for him to be able to visit Carlsbad Caverns and take him to Trinity for his birthday dinner. (My sister and I had visited Carlsbad in 2009/2010 and our meals (steak dinners) were absolutely 5-star with service to match.) I noticed that the restaurant had changed owners, though, in 2012, according to what I had read. The food, his pork chop, and my filet mignon dinners were so very mediocre. The loaded potato was disgusting looking in appearance and I just swiped my fork over a gruesome amount of cheese and bacon bits plopped on top of it. The filet mignon and pork chop were so uneventful. Vegetables were mediocre. We didn't even order an appetizer nor alcoholic beverages, but we wanted to give the server about a 22% tip because she was so nice and attentive, and our bill came to $90 + change. We would've and have had much better meals at Chili's!!! (The wooden 'school-like' chairs were not too comfortable, to boot.) So sad to see how drastically this place had changed....major disappointment (especially on one's birthday).

They stuck our 5 year old's name on customer of the day and allowed her to spin the prize wheel each day we stayed. She was thrilled to win a koozie. Hotel lobby was clean and they had candy, water bottles, and fresh cookies out for guests to enjoy. You could borrow an appliance for your room if needed. There was a little food pantry stocked to the brim if you needed a quick snack or forgot to pack something. Yogurt, apples, oranges, coffee, water, and hot cocoa were all free. Our room was clean and tidy. It came fully stocked with utensils, dishes, cookware, paper towels, dish soap/dishwasher pods, a coffee maker, fridge, and microwave. The hotel was also pet friendly, which was a major plus since we had our two dogs with us. There was a nice little gym section which was connected to the laundry facility and pool. We didn't use the gym or laundry during this stay, but our kids loved the pool. The water was a little cold for my liking, but the kids didn't seem to mind. The area was handicap accessible, clean, and stocked with fresh towels. There was a lovely outdoor patio with heat lamps, tables, and a few grills. Around back, there was a dog walk area stocked with poop bags and a trash can. To my surprise, there were also children's toys-- two cozy coupes, a slide, some scooters, and balance bikes. These people really have it together! If we ever go back to Carlsbad, I'd stay there again!

I waited 20 minutes in line until the manager showed up and was able to get to me. My check in after that only took a couple minutes. It was frustrating because only one person originally was at the front desk and didn't even acknowledge me or the fact that I only needed the card key and room number because I checked in online. The other problem was checking out. When I went online, it asked if I wanted a late checkout time at no extra charge. That was great because my son was still sleeping at 10 and I wanted to give him extra time to rest. This was at 10 am when I requested it but at 1045 housekeeping knocked so we rushed to check out at 1100. It was a little hectic but we were able to do it. The problem was our request for a late checkout never came back and just said pending. It wasn't till after we rushed to checkout and we were on the road that the email finally came in at 1130 saying it was denied. Again, lack of communication and late responses led to the low rating.

Doors to both rooms opened to the outside of the building. Neither room had what I would consider a special character, but I don't really care about that sort of thing. Beds were among the most comfortable that I have experienced in a hotel. The rooms were a good size, with a sofa in the first and a chair in the smaller second room. Both rooms were quiet, though I expect the celler room must be more so. Our main complaint was the lack of space to store our clothes outside of the suitcases - neither a closet nor dresser in either room. The Sailor's Hornpipe room has the bathroom at the top level, and you walk down stairs to reach the bedroom portion. This is okay, except that we moved into this room the evening of the day that I hiked to the summit of Guadalupe Peak, so I was in a considerable amount of pain going up and down the stairs. You might factor this into your choices. The room does have a sunken window which seems to have an escape ladder in case of emergency, which brings some light in if you open the curtains. We found the upstairs heater fan quite noisy so turned it off, and found the electric fireplace downstairs was adequate (I let the owner know, so hopefully the fan will be fixed in future). Parking was angled parking at the street out front (best to approach from the north, or you'll need to make a u-turn). A little worrisome backing out into the road when the view was blocked by another vehicle, but there wasn't much traffic, and I just backed out slowly to give any cars time to react. The housekeeper was friendly and helpful, she even loaned me a broom to sweep snow off my car. A $18 breakfast credit was provided at the Blue House Bakery and Cafe, which was the best breakfast option I have had at a B&B. Good coffee and food, and a friendly cat out front. Overall a positive experience, though perhaps a little pricey for Carlsbad.

The window unit ran the entire time and it never seemed to get warm enough. The wall unit also was noisy. They did provide extra blankets and ear plugs. We would definitely return but would book a room with a fireplace.
