LOUSY SERVICE, LOUSY MANAGEMENT.Called a wk ahead and reserved at 7 pm for birthday celebration. Got there at 645 pm. Hostess kept making excuses that it would be 10 more minutes and that we had come at "table changing time". They did not try to accomodate nor offer a drink or anything while we waited. Even the manager never came to speak to us, nor apologize. They could have cared less. Our party was 6..they kept seating couples that came in. Any other restaurant would have pushed two tables together and honored our reservstion that they had made. So we finalky left at 725 pm and went to Courtyard on 129 and got wonderful service and food. Will never darken the door of Walnut Kitchen again. read more

This was the worst dining experience ever with a reservation. We waited 15 minutes for water and had to ask for drink menu. It took 20 minutes to get drinks. Cornbread came after 40 minutes and food 15 minutes later which was room temp and nothing memorable. Go to RT Lodge where they appreciate service and customers. After expressing concerns, it took equally long to pay so Walnut Kitchen doesn't care. Our server was bragging about the staff coming from Blackberry Farm, it was obvious why they are no longer there. I will not return. read more

Excellent food, and atmosphere! We always come here when we come to Tennessee to visit! We all had steaks, and the loaded baked potato. I got the wedge salad and split it with my husband. It was really good! Great fine dining experience. read more

Terrible breakfast we order cinnamon roll for 7 dollars which was ok to pretty good and chicken and waffles where both the chicken and waffle were cold. We sent back got 2 servings exactly the same and possible waffles were frozen. Cute place good beer but really terrible food. read more

Husband and I stopped in for cocktails and apps. Had the smoked onion and goat cheese dip (on the secret bar menu) which was fantastic. Skilled bartender Kevin steered us toward a couple of interesting and delicious cocktails. We will definitely come back and have the poutine and an aged steak. read more

The inside of this restaurant is decorated kind of rustic - really liked the decor. The food....not so much! The cornbread is served in a iron skillet and didn't have much flavor - it was just ok. The salads were nice and pleasantly good sized. There is not much here for vegetarians - the only option was the vegetable pasta with eggplant & asparagus. It did not have very many vegetables in it and the sauce was just ok. My husband ordered the hanger steak which came with what they call potato dumplings. They were gnocchi and were not good at all - very oily and chewy. He said the hanger steak was ok. We ordered the Benton's cinnamon roll for dessert - minus the bacon. It was rather disgusting. It tasted like it was 5 days old and had a barbecue smoked flavor. Really REALLY....not good! All in all - we were quite disappointed in our meal and our service. read more

This is one of the finest restaurants in East Tennessee. They feature Southern and East Tennessee cuisine with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the chef-owner is a charcuterie guru. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough for anyone wanting to try something new in Maryville. For a town that's certainly not know for restaurant innovation, Walnut Kitchen has finally brought something great to this town. It has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. We made reservations for my parents anniversary and retirement celebration, and from the start, the WK staff were extremely accommodating to my frequently changing reservations, including a large group of people AND children. When we arrived (about 10 minutes early), we were greeted by several friendly faces, our table was already waiting for us, and we were seated immediately. There was plenty of space for us to get up, move around, and socialize with each other in our large party. Our server came right over to take our drink order, and we ordered a few butcher boards. The butcher boards were incredible! The butcher himself brought them over and described how they were made, and even assured one of our guests that there was not an ingredient that he was allergic to in the sausage. It had a great mix of flavors, and the pimento cheese and pickled veggies were delicious! I ordered the hanger steak, and it came perfectly prepared, along with a plate of perfectly crisp french fries that my 2 year old devoured. (She also ate all of her mac and cheese, a few pieces of my steak, and the crispy kale!) For dessert, I couldn't decide between the banana pudding and the cinnamon roll, so I ordered both! I was not disappointed. The cinnamon roll was a nice spin on a breakfast classic that was made into a wonderful dessert! The banana pudding had an incredible smoky flavor that was unlike any other pudding I've ever had! It was smoky, crunchy, creamy, and delicious! Overall, we had a wonderful experience, and anytime we are in town, this will be our GO-TO restaurant! read more

, 11-7-17 update .I have since revisited for another awesome meal!! I got a raw pork chop, that I waited one hour after my order was placed. The wait staff didn't seem excited about raw pork. So the kitchen staff can not keep up when the place is full . The excuse I got was the chief .was training another cook. Let me say this , if your a chief , then you know pork is a serious meat to let slide by raw in the middle without checking it withb a meat thermometer. Just an idea. I won't be back if I can help it,. This is not a 5 star, restaurant at this time. This place has the ability to be great, but for now they are not worth the money or the time spent waiting. Disappointed. There's expensive and there's overpriced. This was overpriced. Sirloin was tough. Service was curt and inattentive. The bathrooms were disgusting (one was clogged up and the other was dirty because only one available). The House chips and dip were burned and the dip literally tasted like mayonnaise...no flavor. Great looking restaurant and friendly staff. But, We were sat 30mins late from our reservation. Were given a free app. Nice touch. Best rack of lamb and duck we had. An absolute must get. Great cornbread and the chicken lollipops were good as well. My wife's steak was ordered medium and came out rare. They took it back and cooked it maybe two more minutes and it was still rare. I love medium rare but her steak was just rare almost a blue center. So it was sent back again. Everyone at the table finished their meals and it must have been at least 15mins later and she finally received her steak. Now it's just chewy leather. Apparently they don't know how to cook a freaking steak. The manager offered us a free dessert. How generous...not. They should have not charged us for the steak that didn't arrive until everyone was done and it was over cooked to death. Cooking a steak to medium is easy. They murdered it. read more

Food was excellent! Innovative menu, nice presentation and exquisite flavor. The 'cakes' mashed potato patties are a must have. And the cinnamon bun dessert with Benton's bacon on top was one of the best desserts I ever had. The service was great the night we went also. We were a party of 8 and they were very attentive. I didn't rate them a 5 star due to the bathroom situation. They only have two unisex individual bathrooms and they were filthy the night we were there. There was as a line when I went and it just was totally unpleasant. I hate unisex bathrooms, two were not enough for the size of the restaurant and the staff needed to attend to them during the evening. Parking is an issue also. Worth the inconvenience because the food is that good! read more

Not worth the price you're paying. We went to celebrate my fiancés birthday. Showed up on Saturday at 4 pm, with a reservation, and was seated right next to a table of four in this big booth like table. The kind where one side is one big booth seat, and the other side is chairs. We was maybe three from the other party, which would have been fine if the whole rest of the restaurant wasn't empty. There was maybe three or four other tables being used... I asked if we could be moved so we are not right on top of other customers for no reason, and we all could be able to talk. We was moved to the back right next to the kitchen which is open. So we got hear everything going on back there while they were trying to cook. Okay, it's whatever. Mother in law order some grape fruit margarita, their out of grapefruit... Order a different margarita, their out of Grand Marnier... She finally got one they could make, and she said it was pretty "weak and unimpressive." When asked if I wanted my salad brought out before or with my dinner, I chose with. My salad was brought out before... Food was decent, but forgettable and not worth the price in my opinion. This was our first time coming to this restaurant, and I just wish it was better experience. I was extremely disappointed with the food. After hearing good reviews from friends, we made reservations for my birthday dinner. We looked at the menu online and thought everything sounded amazing. I ordered a medium sirloin steak and twice baked potato. My steak was well done and pretty plain. Potato was good though. My husband ordered the Faded Chicken, and it was absolutely disgusting. The pineapple was dripping with bourbon and the whole sandwich tasted like a shot of bourbon. He took the pineapple off, and the sandwich was flavorless. Extremely disappointed and will never be back. We didn't want to order dessert since we were so disappointed with our meals. Wait staff and atmosphere were nice, which is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars. read more

We visited The Walnut Kitchen for a special birthday celebration on Saturday night. We arrived early and had some drinks at the bar. The bar staff is super friendly and able to provide recommendations for drinks. The Walnut Old Fashioned was delicious and a great wine selection. To start, we shared the Fried Okra and the Chicken Lollipops. The okra were fantastic - as was the spicy ranch that came on the side. The honey and chilis that accompanied the chicken were terrific. My husband had the Filet and potato pancakes. The steak was cooked perfectly he loved the potatoes. I had the duck medium rare with mushrooms and grapes. It was one of the best duck dishes I've ever had. Our friend had the scallops - also perfectly cooked and the sauce on the side added a little kick. For dessert, we shared the goat cheese cheesecake and the Benton's bacon cinnamon bun - both excellent. Make reservations because it was packed all night on a Saturday. The waitress let us know that the menu is seasonal and will change throughout the year, so we will definitely be coming back to the Walnut Kitchen when we are back in Maryville! read more

I just made my long overdue first visit to Walnut Kitchen this evening. I eat a plant-based diet and was hesitant until I was told that they had a great hummus dish. I was sold at hummus, and was not disappointed. Tommy went over my menu options with me, which was very helpful. I first had the Heirloom Tomato and Cucumber Salad (without cheese) and it was great. A large portion size with a good variety of tomatoes. And the Balsamic was delicious. And the I had the Butterbean Hummus dish. I am a huge fan of butterbeans anyways, but a hummus was just an added bonus. This dish was fire! It was presented beautifully with lots of colorful veggies such as carrots, radishes, bell peppers, cucumbers, and more multi-colored tomatoes. But the pickled ramps made the dish. I've had my fair share of crappy pickled ramps, and these were done perfectly ...... just enough sweet to kill the bite. They were like southern bread & butter pickles mixed perfectly with the hummus and olive oil. And the hemp seeds were a great little perk, as well. I very much enjoyed the atmosphere, too. Not pretentious and very laid back. Casual dress code, which is very important to me. I definitely don't like being uncomfortable while I'm overstuffing myself with delicious food. I can't speak for any other meat-based menu items. But Walnut Kitchen definitely sold me on their vegan options. I highly recommend! read more

We have eaten at the Walnut Kitchen a few times and have enjoyed the food. This time we had a out of town guest and wanted to take him there. It was a weekend night so they were busy. We all were very disappointed in our meals. We started out with the corn fritters which had zero taste. Had to add salt just to get some flavor. Two of us had filets and they did cook them good, they just didn't have any flavor. One of us had the pork chop and it was dry. Two things were good, the pear salad and the tomato bisque soup. That was a very expensive soup and salad! Won't be going back real soon! read more

Just had the best dinner at the Walnut Kitchen. Not only is it a beautiful atmosphere but the upscale feel and comfort food taste is a perfect combo for a night out. I highly recommend the chicken lollipops, corn fritters, pork chop and Mac n cheese. I also sampled the twice baked potato and it was excellent. Always passing this restaurant and decided to make a reservation for dinner. All 4 of us loved our meals .. the steaks were cooked to our specification, very tender and flavorful! Wonderful wine list and totally enjoyed the "1/2 off bottle of wine night"! I found a fabulous red wine which I will add to my wine room. Service was quite good; ambiance was very nice. Only complaint was the bar; I like a martini to fill the glass to the top as it does in all of the places I go; their martini is not quite 3/4 of the glass. Bartender said they use larger glasses .... sorry but they are the same size glasses as other places. Two of us had the bartender remake our martinis as we didn't specify the vodka and the one they used was awful! I will return for sure!! read more

We chose to take our out of town guest to The Walnut Kitchen to try it out. After reading mixed reviews we were unsure what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised. The decor isn't over the top, more on the masculine side, the building itself is old but has a lot of character. We had reservations and unlike most restaurants our table was ready for us to be seated when we arrived. Our waitress was helpful and quick to take care of us. We started of with the chicken lollipops and they were huge, and very tasty, you have to try them for sure. We all had either the ribeye or the filet and they were cooked to perfection. I do not like over seasoned meat, it should hold up on its own and my ribeye did. The Chef did an amazing job on the sides as well, good selections and set apart from the normal boring sides, any choice is a good choice. I do not have a review for desert because we left no room for it, but will plan better next time. The only negative I have, and it's not a huge one, is the sound, it's concrete floors, and brick walls make the acoustics a little annoying. But all in all it's definitely worth going. Nice to have a place Walnut Kitchen come to Maryville. Great job chef. You got a winner! read more

I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. We will not be going back. On arrival, things started off well. Our reserved table was ready and we were immediately seated. We had plenty of time to check out the decor, as our waitress was slow to acknowledge our arrival. The building is beautiful to look at but poorly designed for conversation. High ceilings, brick walls, and cement floors provide for a very loud atmosphere where you will have to repeat yourself often during conversation. The server brought one bottle of water for our party of six. We laughed when she poured us about three inches of water each and walked off. We had to flag her down three different times during the meal to alert her to being out of water or tea. For these prices, I expect to not have to flag down servers. Even worse then the service was the food. My daughter ordered sea scallops. For $34 she got four scallops, some drizzled sauce, and some garnish. She took one bite and declared it the worst scallops she had ever eaten. My 78 year old mother then took a bite, tried to eat it, but eventually spit it out. The "fresh" scallops were fishy and rubbery to the point of being unpleasant to chew. The server took the plate up without bothering to ask if something was wrong with it, even though it was clear it was purposefully uneaten. My father ordered succotash. He received the equivalent of one cup of beans and corn for somewhere around 20 bucks. I ordered herbed chicken. My chicken had no flavor. None. I'm not sure where the herbs went. The au jous with it was great though. So for 25 bucks I got one tiny piece of chicken with no flavor, about a quarter cup of polenta and some gravy. My mother ordered an apple/radish salad which was ill named. It's should have been called a kale salad with apple and radish garnish. My youngest daughter's steak was cooked to perfection. So there was a positive. We also started off with the chicken pops which everyone enjoyed. All the patrons here were dressed up a bit, as the price point would dictate. The staff, however, wears jeans and plaid shirts. It's strange to pay these prices with these tiny food portions and get underdressed, inattentive staff. I don't mind high price points if the food and service is on scale. However, our experience was lacking in both service and food quality. We won't be going back. read more
