Visiting from out of town with my boyfriend and stumbled across this restaurant, made a reservation and were not disappointed! Our server Jake was very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu and took great care of us. Food was amazing, and everything tasted so fresh. Definitely recommend the Chicken Lollipop appetizer, it will not let you down. We both had steaks and they were seasoned and cooked just right. I came here earlier this year with my aunt and uncle and had an amazing experience. Had the charcuterie board and chicken lollipops for main course, we tried the ribeye, the filet, and the pork porterhouse chop and good night was the steak good, but the pork chop threw me for a loop it was so good. The drinks were priced very well and the service was second to none. Want to get the quality of a Blackberry Farms meal at a fraction of the price while also not stuffing Betsy DeVos' pockets? Come here and have a much better time. I'll definitely be coming next month to try their Sunday brunch; 12 dollar bottomless mimosas are my jam. read more

Fantastic whiskey selection and great food. Have Stagg, Pappy 15, WL Weller, Eagle 17, and a lot more at reasonable prices. I had a ribeye and broccolini and it was great. Service was amazing. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. My steak came out more rare than I preferred, and they were very gracious in taking it back and cooking it more to my liking. My husband and I had an amazing dining experience here! We were passing through town on a quick weekend trip and had a delicious dinner. I believe the restaurant is new, the interior was spacious and inviting. The hostess was able to accommodate us arriving 30 min early to our reservation. Our server was so sweet and knowledgeable. We ordered a few appetizers and split a steak. The Butcher Board was definitely a highlight for us, the quality and size was impressive for the price point. I never write follow-up reviews unless it's to communicate an improvement from my initial experience, but I just couldn't let this one go. At my encouragement based on my last visit, three friends joined me for dinner on a weekday at Walnut Kitchen. We had to wait awhile despite having a reservation, but I understand this happens sometimes due to customers "camping" at the table after their meal. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there. Two of us received glasses of warm white wine, and another had something floating in her vodka cocktail. The person in our party who ordered an iced tea didn't receive it until almost 10 minutes after the alcoholic drinks were delivered. When the entrees came, only one of us had hot food. Our pork chops were so well-done that we dared not send them back to be reheated on the grill. I was very disappointed by the experience, and embarrassed to have convinced my friends to spend so much on a less than mediocre meal. Hopefully we just caught them on a bad day, but I won't be suggesting Walnut Kitchen for future dinner plans. read more

Arrived with reservations at 6:45. Ordered right away because it was late. 50 min later the food came out. My fries were over cooked in old grease. Everyone else's food was fine. We had 8:15 reservations arriving a little early. Waited only a few minutes and they wanted to seat us at the bar area in high top and stool tables. I said I would wait for a low table away from the bar and the dingy hostess said that all the other tables were for larger groups. I saw four low tables and said I would wait. No. Then I asked if every time I come as a couple I would have to sit in the bar area at a high top and this idiot hostess says " if you don't want to eat here you don't have to". Strike one. Couples coming in after us were seated at low tables away from the tv and noise of the bar. Strike two. We sit at the high top and finally John comes to serve us. He seems to know the menu but when my wife says no onions or cilantro he fails to mention one of the sides is loaded with onions. He miss heard how I wanted my steak - medium to medium well and after waiting 40 minutes I asked him if they bring bread. He says I was just going to bring you cornbread which he does. Strike three At 45 minutes I asked where our meal is and it miraculously appears. It was hot but over cooked at medium well. I let that go. They stuck in the noisy bar area with inexperienced wait staff so he couldn't hear properly. They don't inform you that things on the menu are not listed properly. My wife had a cabbage as a side in her meal. It's a pink pickled cabbage. We know now. Uninformed wait staff. Strike four. We (I) will never go back. Also they don't tell you that they use their own flavor alcohol. My wife ordered a vodka martini. It tasted funny and she would never order it again. We found out after asking if it was made with gin or vodka. They say they use a Utah vodka made of oats and not like vodka you or I would have ordered. Again they knew. They should explain to their customers every time they serve something out of the norm. read more

We had the Butcher block (house cured meats, pimento cheese, grit cakes, and pickled veggies), Poached pear salad (mixed greens with poached pears, cranberries, pecans, BlackBerry Farm cheese with a bacon vinaigrette), Duck breast with polenta and port blueberry reduction, Ribeye with side of yummy brussel sprouts and Hen of the Woods mushrooms. Our server Terry (sp?) was the best. The table next to us was a little off balance and she actually got down under the table to fix it. She is very sweet and gives great recommendations. Have wanted to try The Walnut Kitchen for quite some time & was excited to finally make reservations for a special occasion celebration. Sadly, the experience was disappointing & not worth the upper end price. We arrived 15 minutes prior to our reservation. Despite several open tables, we had to wait until our reservation time. Several parties filled the entrance waiting for tables while open tables remained. The bone marrow appetizer was decent, but all else was over cooked. The halibut was dry, scallops rubbery, filet well done when requested medium. The cinnamon roll dessert was dry & crusty. We barely ate any of it. I've had better meals at far less expensive restaurants, & question the skill of a chef who overcooks everything ordered. The atmosphere, while rustic/industrial & attractive, gets loud & is not conducive to relaxed conversation. With many other great options available in this area, I would not recommend this restaurant, & will be celebrating somewhere else. I expected so much more from this place. Disappointing! read more

We stopped at Walnut Kitchen on the way back from a nice day in the mountains. We had been wanting to stop there on several other trips, but were coming through Maryville too early. Now they are open earlier for lunch and dinner. We ordered the sirloin steak and the beef kabobs. Both were poorly prepared. The potato and onion slices on the kabobs were almost raw. If you have ever bitten into a raw onion, you know it will bring tears to your eyes. The kabob meat was cooked rare instead of medium, but that was ok. I had them pack the to go, and finished cooking them at home. The sirloin steak was tough. They had not marinated the steak long enough. The raw veggies on the kabobs were not soaked in ice water overnight to get them ready for use on a kabob. Some restaurants nuke the veggies for a couple minutes to get them ready before putting them on the grill with the beef. Anyway, the kitchen has obviously not figured out how other restaurants cook and prepare beef menu items. Walnut Kitchen is a 2 STAR VENUE with 3 STAR PRICES. There are 2 other restaurants nearby where you will be happier eating a steak dinner. read more

My spouse and I made a last minute decision to try this restaurant. A table reservation was not available but were invited to dine at the bar. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and talking to other couples waiting for a table. Julia was our bartender and was very attentive. I had the spiced old fashion (yummy!) and my spouse a local brewed beer. We kept it simple and split the Patriot burger with a side of Brussels sprouts and the chicken lollipops with an added side of fries. Everything was delicious! The prices were very reasonable. The food at this place is incredible! We had the Tomato Salad to start. This was a preview of good things to come. Our party of 5 then had Hanger Steaks, the Ribeye, and a burger. All were delicious but I personally think the Hanger Steak was best. It came with potato dumplings, kale, and gravy. Perfect blend of flavors in every bite. For dessert we had the Vanilla Pound Cake and Skillet Strawberry Cobbler. The cobbler was amazing!!! They also had a great beer and wine selection. The cornbread was also great. The food is exquisite, and the servers are quite knowledgeable. The ambience is fitting to the foothills of the Smokies, though the quality of the restaurant compares to that of a much larger city. My Constant Dining Companion and I were ready to be thrilled by Walnut Kitchen, based on all the great Yelp reviews and locals' raves, and well... it just didn't happen. Let's face it: Brunch is a difficult meal to judge a restaurant's mettle on. The menu is limited, and often folks aren't at their finest in the early hours. Our experience wasn't bad, and maybe my expectations were too high, but of the items we ordered, I was really only wowed by two: CDC's phenomenal 10 oz. sirloin with eggs and potato hash, and the delectable Bloody Mary he ordered. We arrived early for our 10:15 reservation, and after being seated promptly, we waited more than 5 minutes for our server to come for drink orders. No problem, really...except we had no menus. Shouldn't the host have provided those? Anyway... the server arrives with menus, we order coffee, water is delivered, and then coffee comes and my coffee cup is dirty-- a solid, very visible ring of old coffee rimming the inside of the cup. It is whisked away and a clean one comes. Our server brought cream as requested, but no sweetener or spoon. Details are so important for a place that bills itself as upscale. I think most diners and reviewers would agree. As for the food-- we started with the Tomato Salad. They present a good variety of tomatoes, but the portion is woefully small. The plate comes with a smear of herbed goat cheese (which isn't mentioned in the menu description), a small mound of greens tossed in a subtle sweet corn dressing, several (maybe three or four) yellow cherry tomatoes cut in half, and HALF slices of three other tomato varieties. The salad was good, but at $9, it should've been something to rave about. It wasn't. The biscuit and gravy I ordered was fine, but needed more gravy to balance the biscuit. CDC's meal was the definite winner of the morning. The steak was perfect: tender, expertly seasoned, and cooked just as ordered. It came with eggs (they must've been good, I didn't hear him complain as he gobbled them up!), and a sturdy, tasty potato hash. We also ordered the Benton's Cinnamon Roll. It's served in a small, very hot iron skillet. We dig in, and not only was the cinnamon roll cold, it was RAW on the bottom and interior. So our server took it away and several minutes later another server showed up with a fresh one, larger and hot and... 6 bites into it and we're forking out raw dough again. The server later told us the manager removed the charge from our bill. So to pay over $50 for a brunch that was just so-so...not my cup of tea (but the Bloody Mary is worth every penny of the $10 you'll pay for it!). CDC and I agreed that we would try their dinner service soon. Let's hope it's more in line with the reputation of the chef and the price points on the menu. read more

Hostess kept making excuses that it would be 10 more minutes and that we had come at "table changing time". They did not try to accomodate nor offer a drink or anything while we waited. Even the manager never came to speak to us, nor apologize. They could have cared less. Our party was 6..they kept seating couples that came in. Any other restaurant would have pushed two tables together and honored our reservstion that they had made. So we finalky left at 725 pm and went to Courtyard on 129 and got wonderful service and food. Will never darken the door of Walnut Kitchen again. read more

This was the worst dining experience ever with a reservation. We waited 15 minutes for water and had to ask for drink menu. It took 20 minutes to get drinks. Cornbread came after 40 minutes and food 15 minutes later which was room temp and nothing memorable. Go to RT Lodge where they appreciate service and customers. After expressing concerns, it took equally long to pay so Walnut Kitchen doesn't care. Our server was bragging about the staff coming from Blackberry Farm, it was obvious why they are no longer there. I will not return. read more

The inside of this restaurant is decorated kind of rustic - really liked the decor. The food....not so much! The cornbread is served in a iron skillet and didn't have much flavor - it was just ok. The salads were nice and pleasantly good sized. There is not much here for vegetarians - the only option was the vegetable pasta with eggplant & asparagus. It did not have very many vegetables in it and the sauce was just ok. My husband ordered the hanger steak which came with what they call potato dumplings. They were gnocchi and were not good at all - very oily and chewy. He said the hanger steak was ok. We ordered the Benton's cinnamon roll for dessert - minus the bacon. It was rather disgusting. It tasted like it was 5 days old and had a barbecue smoked flavor. Really REALLY....not good! All in all - we were quite disappointed in our meal and our service. read more

For a town that's certainly not know for restaurant innovation, Walnut Kitchen has finally brought something great to this town. It has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. We made reservations for my parents anniversary and retirement celebration, and from the start, the WK staff were extremely accommodating to my frequently changing reservations, including a large group of people AND children. When we arrived (about 10 minutes early), we were greeted by several friendly faces, our table was already waiting for us, and we were seated immediately. There was plenty of space for us to get up, move around, and socialize with each other in our large party. Our server came right over to take our drink order, and we ordered a few butcher boards. The butcher boards were incredible! The butcher himself brought them over and described how they were made, and even assured one of our guests that there was not an ingredient that he was allergic to in the sausage. It had a great mix of flavors, and the pimento cheese and pickled veggies were delicious! I ordered the hanger steak, and it came perfectly prepared, along with a plate of perfectly crisp french fries that my 2 year old devoured. (She also ate all of her mac and cheese, a few pieces of my steak, and the crispy kale!) For dessert, I couldn't decide between the banana pudding and the cinnamon roll, so I ordered both! I was not disappointed. The cinnamon roll was a nice spin on a breakfast classic that was made into a wonderful dessert! The banana pudding had an incredible smoky flavor that was unlike any other pudding I've ever had! It was smoky, crunchy, creamy, and delicious! So the kitchen staff can not keep up when the place is full . The excuse I got was the chief .was training another cook. Let me say this , if your a chief , then you know pork is a serious meat to let slide by raw in the middle without checking it withb a meat thermometer. Just an idea. I won't be back if I can help it,. This is not a 5 star, restaurant at this time. This place has the ability to be great, but for now they are not worth the money or the time spent waiting.
