A very bad experience. We had reservations and were put in the back corner where the kitchen is located. Very loud. There was plenty of room in the dining area up front. My order was the chicken with gnocchi. I received 6 small pieces of chicken (about 1 inch long) and the whole mess was floating in a sauce. It looked more like a bowl of soup. I am honestly very surprised at the amount of negative reviews on here for this place. Everything we had was perfect. We started with the chicken lollipops, which had a great crunch with some sweetness from honey. I was thinking about how I wanted more of them later that night. They also brought out some corn bread with butter which was light and fluffy and very enjoyable. We all ordered steak, I had the sirloin which was cooked perfectly and had this awesome crust on the outside, my mom and I shared sides of brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese, we wanted to try everything! These brussel sprouts. Let me just say I could have eaten those for my meal alone. They were roasted and crunchy and just amazing. I wish I could make brussel sprouts like that. Wow. Just wow. Absolutely incredible dining experience. From the appetizers to the main courses to the desserts, it was all exceptional. My wife tried the delay, and it was cooked perfectly, with terrific savory my son had the trout, seemed disappointed, but I tried it and it was fantastic! The only thing I didn't care for was the corn bread. Something was off about it. My wife didn't care for it either. The cheese plate appetizer, with sausages, lettuce perfectly balanced. One of the best restaurants on our Tennessee trip - beats waiting in line in Townsend, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge go for a beautiful drive to The Walnut Kitchen. Located in Downtown Maryville - The bartenders are amazing - ask for an Empress, Blood Orange Margarita or Pomegranate Lemonade if you don't want alcohol. The Butcher Block (Charcuterie) and Cheese Board were amazing. All of their meats are dry aged. We also enjoyed their Fried Chicken Lollipops as an appetizer. I want to drop a 1 star review here but I can't do it so I'll explain why I want to. I looked up a restaurant to bing my friends to who are local to the area. I wanted something high end and good. This place seemed to check all from reviews. Well, we get there and we are the only people there and I was embarrassed as one can be. We decide to stay, and the waitress was rude. My friends wife wanted another glass of wine (this is where a restaurant really makes it's money) and they said no. Finally the bill comes out and it's nearly $300 and guess what? The waitress did NOT get a $60 dollar tip. The restaurant may reply with the whole covid excuse but it had nothing to do with it. read more

First time for us at this wonderful establishment. It has a very rustic and romantic atmosphere (especially in the back by the kitchen). We had reservations and were seated immediately. The back area is darker and cozier, however the kitchen is open back there. We found it interesting to watch the kitchen staff work. Our server had just started working there, but nonetheless, was knowledgable about the menu. My wife found a Cab that she liked, and I found (for the first time ever!) Buffalo Trace Kosher Bourbon. Even the Bourbon Kitchen in Lexington didn't have that, although it was on their menu! Our server started us off with their house cornbread, which we thought was the perfect cornbread in every way. I had the house salad with house dressing. It was good size and variety. For dinner, I had the 6 oz Filet Mignon. Very few restaurants offer a small filet, so I appreciated that choice (the other size they offer is 8 oz). The steak was prepared perfectly and tasted wonderful. I was able to eat the entire piece of meat (no fat or grizzle). I also had the sautéed French green beans. They were also prepared well. My wife opted for the night's special, pan seared Red Snapper over grits with a mango salsa. She loved it, and so did I (because I had to try it). Our server was attentive and formal throughout our meal. We really felt it was worth the visit. Although, at their prices, I wouldn't go there every weekend. Loved the location, beautiful interior but the vibe was pretty casual so we never felt like it was too "fancy" The chicken lollipops are a must try. Fun to eat and the chicken was incredibly juicy and fall-apart tender with a bit of sweetness from the honey. A mini cast iron skillet of cornbread with whipped butter is brought out ahead of your meal, and it was moist and tasty. My bone-in pork chop was cooked to perfection with a delicious peppery crust on the outside. It was a huge cut of meat and I had plenty to take home and make eggs with the next morning. Brussels Sprouts were out of this world - they have walnuts and a bit of sweetness to them - I could have eaten two helpings. My husband ordered the cider-brined pork served on bed of farro. The pork was fork tender and the sweetness of the chutney complimented it well. The farro added great texture and nuttiness. Bumping my review down 1/2 star for slow and inattentive service (though our waitress was very kind) and another 1/2 star for our corn fritter appetizer, which was "good" but lacking flavor on the inside. read more

Salty and chewy $90.00 bone in steak special was disappointing. The starchy mashed potatoes and bland Mac and Cheese won't win any blue ribbons either. Shrimp and Grits were fine, but the doughy, undercooked cinnamon roll was not the dessert I was hoping for and while our server was nice, she did not know how to open our very expensive bottle of Cabernet, breaking off the cork, despite someone already pre opening at the bar. We have been coming to walnut kitchen for about 5 years since we got married for special occasions and different things. We have loved it every single time. It was a warm, inviting, cozy place. The menu options (appetizers, entrees and sides) were unique and flavourful which made it the place to go. The amount of money spent each time was well worth it. HOWEVER, this last time on December 1st was extremely disappointing. I believe a new head chef has come in and the resturant has moved to a feel like the chop house or a steakhouse. Their menu options were bland when it came to the market selections. Their appetizers were also nothing to write home about. We got the Joyce farm chicken bites (plain and buffalo) and the chicken itself was great but there was nothing awesome about it. Their bread plate was not worth it with the selection of cheeses and jelly. There were 4 of us for my birthday dining and three of us got market selections and while the food is quality, there was nothing special about it. It was as if we went to longhorn steakhouse. One person got an entree and just lacked. There was hardly any flavor to the market selections and they were just bland. The sides offered were your basic sides at any steakhouse. Baked potatoes, green beans, fries, etc. They used to have corn bread offered before the meal came as well and that was no longer offered. That was some of the best cornbread with butter. The sides used to be so unique and fresh and while they were separate it was so much better than that night! We ordered a cinnamon roll from tellico grains to take home for my birthday and upon arriving home ready to eat it, the bottom was burned. And it was not a caramelized burn from the sugar. It was BURNED and not edible. The best part of the night was the sweet table next to us who sang happy birthday and the area we were in joined in. Our total was around 240 without tip and to be honest, it was not worth it at all. Unfortunately, we will not be back and will be on the hunt for a dining experience that's farm to table, local and unique! Save your money. So disappointing. read more

Great local own upscale steak house with a variety of dishes. They do a great job changing their menu to offer seasonal flavors. I love that they source local ingredients. The atmosphere has a cool open industrial vibe. The bartenders are always coming up with beautiful and tasty drinks. The lollipop chicken has always been a popular staple on their menu, for good reason! The grouper with grits is one of my all time favorite dishes! Dinner for three. Ordered the aged rib-eye, NY strip, and chicken lollipops. Also ordered a charcuterie board, martini, and bottle of wine. Martini was watered-down. Charcuterie board was not a charcuterie board. It was cream cheese covered up by pimento cheese with some spicy kielbasa, picked onions, sweet pickles, and some sort of chips. Cream cheese surrounded by pimento cheese. I do not recommend it. The steaks were good, not great. The green beans were good. The cheese rotini was...meh. Chicken lollipops were cooked fine but the flavors don't go together. I expected more for the money. I'd heard good things. Unfortunately there was nothing we ordered that made anyone say "wow that's delicious." Ambiance is nice but a bit loud. You can't hear each other speak. I can only give three stars as part of my meal was burned. I had the North Carolina Trout which the part not burned was really good. The baby greens served with it only had olive oil as a dressing--so it was disappointingly bland--needed at least salt and pepper, The corn bread was also burned. We just tried Walnut Kitchen did the first time while celebrating our anniversary. It was one of my very favorite restaurant experiences in the Knoxville area and we will definitely be returning. They do classics very well and all of the food we had was delicious. We had the seasonal appetizer of a panzanella salad, complimentary cornbread, and each had dessert. My husband had the ribeye and said it was one of the best steaks he has ever had. I loved my salmon and the side of Parmesan and bacon rotini was sinful! I recommend getting a reservation which is easy online through their website. It's also worth mentioning that I felt very safe. Mrs. M and I made our first visit last night to celebrate the anniversary of our first date. Thankfully we've progressed since McDonalds in 1980... We had a 5:45 reservation and arrived about five minutes early and were immediately seated. The interior is very open and feels pseudo Lodge-like, at least until you are seated and then see the traffic on Maryville streets. We ordered the potato chips, which were excellent. The smoked trout roe was especially good! Mrs. M had the Hanger Steak and I had the Cedar Brine Pork Tenderloin. Both were cooked as we'd ordered and delicious. We both thought the Chef picked sides for each of our entrees were especially impressive! As we were celebrating we had the Cinnamon Roll for a dessert and it was good too. The Bad? Noise - certainly as the place filled it became increasingly obvious that it is a small venue with brick and wood walls. Waiting - there is little, really no, waiting area so be prepared to stand outside if your table is not ready. The Good? Overall I was impressed. The service was outstanding and the food delicious, but fair warning - don't go here thinking it's a competitor to Foothills Milling. Instead this is a nice, non-chain, experience with costs on par with Calhoun's, Aubrey's or Copper Cellar, but a much more eclectic menu. I like the new choice myself. read more

This place is awesome - from the atmosphere, the service, and then to the food. Wow, way to go Maryville for getting another helluva good restaurant. This is only a block away from Foothills Milling Co, which is one of my all time favorite restaurants, this place I know is gonna be one of my new favorite restaurants. It's located in the building that used to be 'The Market.' For the ambiance - I love the big brown leather booths, love the wood block cut wall, love the Rose Room that has a barrel for the door - super cool & I also love how the lighting becomes more dim as the night goes on. The food - I mean damn that cornbread, I'm gonna be dreaming about it for weeks. Literally the best cornbread I've ever had, the fried okra is amazing, the fried chicken lollipops are a wonderful snack full of tender chicken, tomato salad was fresh and I loved the herby creamy dressing on the side, my scallops were seared perfectly, the hanger steak was very good and those dumplings = yum, the mashed potato cakes were unbelievable, the banana pudding was to die for it was sooo good, the cinnamon roll is huge but amazing as well. I could literally take some of those home and have them for breakfast. The coffee was from Vienna Coffee Company - the local Maryville based coffee company that is so fresh and flavorful. I literally have not one bad thing to say about this place. Service was impeccable, at times I didn't even realize our server Julia was even there. She would bring me a drink and I wouldn't even see her put it down. That is a talent. I will definitely be dreaming about my next visit as this will easily become one of my go-to restaurants. The quality of the food, the service and the atmosphere are all top of the line. They are just opening so be patient as everyone flocks to the new restaurants, and I would definitely make a reservation that way you are guaranteed a table. If for some reason you happen to wander in here, they do have a bar where you can get full service. Did I mention they'll be open for Sunday Brunch?! Maryville has literally no breakfast/brunch spots, so this will definitely give the locals a place to go get a fabulous breakfast meal. We were vacationing in the Smokies and found this restaurant on line. We liked the menu- local products and bakery items. It was terrific! Very friendly and efficient wait staff, comfortable bar and tables not too close. The place was hopping. Service was excellent. Portions were generous so be careful with ordering appetizers! I dined here with colleagues this evening and our party of 8 left with full bellies and and ranting and raving about the amazing food and service For appetizers we enjoyed the pimento cheese, short ribs and okra. All were delicious but the short ribs were outstanding. They were so tender and perfectly seasoned. I highly recommend them. For dinner, I enjoyed the ribeye and potato cakes. I'm in the "a steak is a steak" club where I feel most steaks taste the same and this one was juicy and cooked perfectly. The potato cakes were the highlight for me. For dessert we ordered one of everything (except the cheese plate) and it was a tie for me on whether the cinnamon roll or cheesecake was my favorite. Our server, Tara, was attentive and super nice. We have tried unsuccessfully to get in at Walnut Kitchen several times over the years. Recently when my wife picked me up at Tyson McGhee she mentioned that she was hungry and I thought hey what about Walnut Kitchen. We called and they said there were 2 seats together at the bar. We took a chance and we weren't disappointed; in the seats or the food! I had just come in from Manhattan and had steak twice while there, so I finally settled on a burger (the American), and she had the scallops. We were both very happy with our selections. Did I mention we were seated at the bar... they had a really nice selection of bourbons! I had a pour of Elijah Craig 18 y/o and she had a couple of cocktails, a blueberry mojito & a "Down by the bay" Grey Goose Watermelon Basil. But as I looked over the selection I spied a number nice selections, from Blanton's to Noah's Mill, George T. Stagg, & Stagg Jr., even Pappy van Winkle and other notables. My wife and I and our good friends made a quick change of dinner venues last night and called the Walnut Kitchen right at 6:00. We were told it would be anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. We waited about 10 minutes and we're seated at an available table (which surprised me). Ordered drinks from the bar and took them to the table (drinks were ok - nothing memorable). We order dinner (2-Chicken, 1-NY strip, 1-Appalachian Pork Fried Rice). The server brought some bread and butter for the table an it was delicious. We needed it to hold us over for our meals to arrive about 50 minutes. The Chicken was a large portion and was good. The steak which was ordered medium was very rare and we tracked down our server to inform him of the undercooked steak (usually they ask you to cut into the steak to verify if was correct). The server took the steak back to the kitchen and left the sides so he could eat something. My fried rice was disappointing.....3 small pieces of pork on top of was seemed to be a favored steamed rice and a piece of grilled book choy. Not what I envisioned based on the description. I have had the pork tenderloin at Cazzy's and they serve you the entire tenderloin for about 2/3rds the price. I easily could have consumed the pork pieces without cutting them....perhaps 3oz....for $45. Back to the steak. It was brought back out to the table and it was still rare and which point he asked for a new steak. His wife shared her chicken and he ate his sides. We all finished and the server asked if we wanted dessert...we declined.....4 minutes later they brought the new steak for my friend...we got it to go without touching it. The manager did come to the table and apologized for the steak and took it off the check. I probably wouldn't return based on my meal and the issues with the steak. Freshly mixed cocktails from the bar and the grilled bread with side dipping oil is a favorite of ours. Acoustics are pretty bad, don't go for a quiet dinner , it won't happen here.
