The big box jeweler had a guy come once a month to do it, and of course I just missed that date so I had to wait a whole month. The whole time I was afraid that something might happen to it while it being uninsured. After getting it appraised, I was shocked to see how much they charged me for the appraisal. They definitely didn't let me know that it was going to be that much when I talked to them on the phone. It was like a monthly ring payment. Now, this year I had bought a wedding/anniversary band for my wife. And I was faced with the same issue...where to get it appraised. I had to wait for the date this guy would show up and they charged an arm and a leg. For a $1000 ring they wanted $150 to do the appraisal. So I decided to look elsewhere. I stumbled upon Midwest Gem Lab, Inc on Yelp. I went to their website, and their business looked very professional. What I liked best about them was that they offered their rates up front (no hidden costs). And their rates were half that of what I would have paid anywhere else...either from where I went to last time, or anywhere that I researched. So I decided to give them a call. They answered the phone promptly and were very polite and very helpful answering my questions. I asked them if I could make an appointment to drop the ring off. I started to look at my calendar for dates that were two weeks out. But she told me that I could stop by today and it would only take an hour! Wow, that is great. I wasn't expecting that. I decided to stop in the following day. Their building was very easy to get to. It's right on Bluemound and Calhoun. As I entered, I was politely greeted and taken back to her office. I gave her my ring and then left to run an errand. I came back and she was already waiting for me with my ring and the appraisal. She explained the appraisal and informed me what she did to come up with that value. Fantastic...last guy never explained anything. It was the easiest process ever to get my ring appraised, and she was the nicest person to work with. And you can't beat their rates! I will definitely be back in the future. I've taken jewelry in on three occasions: first to have new clasps on bracelets and the second two times to have rings resized. On all three occasions I had to call several times AFTER giving them a month, and every time I was told that the person was "very busy." Ok. Who isn't? And no customer wants to hear that. In the end it was two- three months before I got my jewelry back. The last time the job had been finished for a week (after two phone calls and two months) but no one bothered to call me. So three tries, and they are out. I will never use Magpie again - nor would I shop there, as the experience has made me want to find a place that offers better customer service, even if jewelry repair is not their money-maker or interest.

If you are in need of a watch battery - or watch repair go to Hawkins Clock store which is on 73rd Greenfield right down the street. The battery change is $4 - AND you wait while its done.
