I bought matching rings in Africa in 2000. Not expensive rings; about $100 each at that time. They're gold bands (about 3/8th inch wide) with a 1/2 inch long 'face' of 3 etched out characters (elephant, warrior and giraffe) with a rough brushed finish The rest of the band is polished gold with elephant hair inlays. The friend I was visiting in Africa asked me to take some of her jewelry to be appraised, so I figured I'd have my few pieces appraised also (in 2000). At that time, the person at Shallow immediately recognized the elephant hair. Not long after that my job changed and wearing jewelry was not allowed due to the equipment I worked around. So 10 year later I retire and start wearing a few of my rings on occasion. I notice one of the elephant inlays on my Africa ring looks loose, so I take it off and put in away. That was in 2014. I finally remember to have it taken in to be fixed when my SO was taking his watch there to be fixed. Well, Shallow finally figured out, and recognized, that it was elephant hair and called to ask if their plan of gluing it in place was acceptable. I told them if that was how it was done in the first place - fine. My SO picked it up and my first comment was that I had never seen it so clean and shiny! That was because it wasn't supposed to be shiny! It was supposed to be brushed! When I took my SO's ring in to show them how my ring should look, the young man who I talked to said he 'didn't understand what my problem was'. I asked to talk to someone else. That person said I didn't tell them it was brushed, because a brushed finish wears off, so they didn't know. He said he'd 'yell at' the person who did it if that made me happy. They did make the face a brushed finish, but it does not have the rough brushed look it used to have. So - don't buy rings with a brushed finish because they wear off (bullshit). read more

We were visiting the area and staying at the RV park at the fairgrounds. The small ring that holds my St. Christopher's medal to the chain broke and I came here to have it fixed. It was close by, that's all I knew, but now I realize I stumbled onto an 80 year old store that is first class in every way. The gentleman that waited on me blew me away when he examined my medal and asked if I went to Italy for it. Well yes, yes I did, but how in the world did you know that? Was it stamped on the back? No, he knew because of how thin it was an being 18k, which apparently is often the case with something from Italy. He also explained that the ring attached to the top of the medal was wearing thin and should be rebuilt in the next year. He replaced the broken ring and polished up my wedding ring while he was at it, and gave me a "visitor's discount.'" Very professional staff and a lovely store. read more

This review is for the watch repair portion of this shop, specifically Richard Trissel's services. I went in with an old 1920's Waltham pocket watch. Richard initially thought the spring had jammed, as did I. I left the watch with him for repairs. A few days later, he called me to tell me it had been a loose screw that had come loose and jammed the watch and that the spring was in fine shape. It turns out he had had to ask four different watch shops before he could hunt down the correct screw. What a champ! The repair price was still a tad steep, but lower than initially quoted, and Richard even greased everything up and polished the exterior for free. I've been here numerous times and always felt like I got screwed when I left. My grandmother was a faithful patron and i took her jewelry in for cleaning, sizing, and repair after her death. Everything was done; but it took almost a month for three pieces, it cost almost twice what they quoted me, and then one of the rings was sized down to the point that I can't wear it because it scrapes my fingers (they didn't bother telling me that my fingers were too small to size down such a large ring). My husband tried recently to take my Rolex there for a cleaning...BIG mistake. It was losing a couple minutes a day when he took it in. Now it loses hours a day and sometimes stops running. They gave me our money back after trying to fix it twice. They say they didn't break anything, but I think they did. Don't bother going there. There is bound to be someplace better. read more

Friendly, helpful staff makes this an enjoyable jewelery shopping experience. They don't have a huge selection, but there is a good variety of quality pieces. I bought a fairly priced bracelet for my wife a couple years ago which she liked and still wears. Was just in here again and had our wedding rings cleaned. They offered us coffee while we waited, but it was really only about 10 minutes. Just about enough time to peruse the current selections. The rings came back shiny and new, they did a great job. Only thing is I thought the price for the cleaning was a bit much at $40/ring as they were white gold. With those two purchases, they should have thrown in my ring, especially for being a repeat customer, but instead charged me $5 to clean it. read more

My husband brought me to this place to pick-up my mothers day present last sunday (a pretty expensive necklace with diamond). While waiting for them to process the payment. Mike ask us to hand him our jewelries (my necklace with cross pendant, 2white gold rings, 1 beautiful 14k gold ring, rose gold ring, my earrings and the wedding ring of my husband) for him to clean as per stores free service. Us trusting so much we hand him all these jewelries. I was pretty much happy as we went out the store that day. Then the next day as I put on the gold ring I felt roughness on my ring! At first it didnt bother me but as the day goes on it becomes annoying coz my ring get stucked when it rubs to my hair or my clothes so I look on it closely and found out some parts are seems hollow while some are smooth. Originally it was very smooth and I dont have any problem with it, now theres a little scraping everywhere even on the inside too no wonder why it feels so uncomfortable! I dont know how it happens but I cant think of anybody who touches it last but them. Big big mistake to come to this store!!! So pissed and went there again to show the ring and returned the item we bought. Lesson learned wont let anybody clean my jewelries ever again! I should have just stayed with Kesslers. read more

I'll start by saying I had an amazing experience at Shallow Jewelers. The brief version is this: I came in with a diamond I bought online thinking I got a great deal, in reality mine was very cloudy and not good enough. Dean ordered me a new one, found the setting I wanted and put it all together in under a week for only very slightly more than the online diamond. The engagement ring looked stunning for a great price. I couldn't be happier. The longer version shows how much they cared to ensure I walked out with a ring I was proud of that was in my price range. Dean offered his free opinion of my online diamond and allowed me to look at my diamond next to a diamond of the same color and clarity as my own. The difference was clear even to my eye and I knew I had to return mine. He gave me his price for the replacement diamond of the same color clarity cut and carat, which was more but only slightly. It was an easy choice and I didn't hesitate. He got it ordered and I saw it the next day. The new diamond was perfect and truly glowed. He ordered the ring to set it in and had it all built in under a week. I checked it out and knew it was perfect. He helped me with the paperwork for financing and gave me the appraisal and paperwork for insurance. 6 days after I walked in with my bad diamond, I walked out with the ring of my (and her) dreams. 9 days later I was engaged and she can't stop staring at it. Thank you to Dean and everyone at Shallow Jewelers for guiding me through this experience. In an industry that so often lacks integrity and is very intimidating, I knew with Dean I would get honest answers and information and a ring that is truly beautiful, all for less than any place I went to before, even the internet. (For comparison, I went to Kesslers first and got a price $2k more than I spent at Shallows for a diamond that was 20% smaller... yikes. Glad I came to Shallow Jewelers!) read more

Awful experience at Shallow today. Went in with a 75 year old gold bracelet that needed repair due to a cracked clasp. The service rep took the bracelet back to the jeweler to look at. I was told that the only possible way to repair was to replace the clasp with a lobster claw, which would require removing the substantial gold two sided clasp, at the cost of $400. (which I was told would include the cost of the gold they would keep). I asked if there were any less expensive options and was told no. So I asked for the bracelet back.. I was surprised to see that it was missing part of the gold clasp; the part that had been cracked was completely gone. I asked about it, and they started to look around. The jeweler had the gall to say, "It's not like that little piece was worth anything." The service rep came back and said, that they would keep looking and she would "tell them not to vacuum" and she'd take my number and call me. I said that I needed more, something signed saying that they had lost the piece, and asked what would happen if they didn't find it. I was told that would be up to the owner, who wasn't there. When I mentioned that this was a distinctive part of the clasp that was lost, that there was a heart on it, the woman questioned if that was true. Luckily at that point, another worker came out from the back with the missing piece she found on the floor. It's not that i think they were trying to steal this, but I came in with a repair, they made it worse, lost part of the item, then not only didn't offer any sort of apology for their lack of professionalism, but questioned my right to be questioning them about it. Will NEVER go back, and will certainly tell the friend who recommended the place about this shoddy treatment. read more
