Quick place to stop for decent food! Everything is a bit overpriced but atleast there is a good variety available. There is a convenience store and a few restaurants. Bathrooms are available without having to wait in a line an are kept very clean. They have a person monitoring the entire area for cleaning as needed. There is also a fuel station as well as a large parking area. This place is called "Apple Green" when we came by, I didn't see Walt Whitman on the sign, maybe it changed ownership... I almost forgot to mention that they have EV and Tesla chargers available here. read more

​We stopped at the Walt Whitman Rest Stop​ during a road trip to D.C. ​When we stopped there in late August, the parking lot was packed​ with fellow summer travelers. I remember how shabby the rest stop used to be before the renovation, but now it looks ​S​O MUCH better and feels roomier​ and modern. There's a good assortment of vendors (I'm a fan of the Shake Shack). Plus, the bathrooms ​are clean and have full privacy doors - 5 stars just for that on a long-haul drive! ​FYI for non-Jerseyan travelers - In New Jersey, you don't pump your own gas.​ A gas attendant will do it for you. Overall, I was very impressed with the renovated ​W​alt Whitman and would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling through the area. read more

I can't believe that this the new style of service areas. It's been a while since I took a road trip and pulled into a service area, and I'm flabbergasted by this new area. It is high end yet accommodates all, even has electric charging. A staff member was in the bathroom attending to keep it all clean. I am very impressed, but could have liked other food vendors to be here. read more

I was driving my partner's EV when I realized the GPS was routing me to Walt Whitman Rest stop. I was super unfamiliar and questioned the charging stop since it's been closed for over a year. So happy to report that it's brand-spankin' new. I'm not too certain about the gas station, but it looked like people were using it... but from my experience, there are 8 Tesla Superchargers and plenty of parking. NOTE: It's now located near the service area entry, not where they used to be. The old place is now an overnight truck parking area. The exterior of the building looks like an actual mall -- it no longer gives a decrepit vibe. The restrooms are fully private and super clean. And the options are pretty nice: Starbucks, Shake Shack, Popeyes, and an Applegreen. I was curious about the Applegreen prices and was shocked that it wasn't super marked up for sandwiches and chips. I wasn't able to try any food since I just ate dinner. However, if you do choose to eat food and it's a nice day, know that there are nice outdoor tables and benches for you to get some fresh air while you're at it. Would highly recommend the NEW and IMPROVED Walt Whitman Service Area. I also saw that the Clara Barton Service Area is closed down. Maybe it's on its way to improvement just like Walt Whitman... we shall see. Other rest stops need to take notes!! read more

Went here on Saturday September 21st 2024 at about 6:12AM to use the restrooms. My family and I were headed to South Carolina, and we passed this rest stop and decided to use the restroom. Got off, it was an easy in and out, and was quick. However, as another user said, people park all over without a care where they park, so my dad pulled up in the front, and we used the restroom inside. Restrooms were very clean, and had toilet paper. They also had popeyes, a little convience store with salads, drinks, and sandwiches and snacks, and a shake shack. none of that was open at 6:00AM but we weren't looking for food. Walked in and out, and it was easy to get out of the rest area itself too. Will definitely use this stop! read more

This service area went under some serious renovations and it is a lot more modern looking, clean, and the upkeep is superb. There's even a handful of Tesla charging stations on the far end of the parking lot. The only complaint I have is that the amount of parking spots is too little and the only food options is Starbucks, Shake Shack, and Popeyes. The toilets were clean which is a relief.we stopped here at 7 pm. It wasn't busy. They have a Roy Roger's and also sell snacks. Stopped at the service center for fuel and a bite to eat. The service center was clean and the restrooms were very nice! However the Shake Shack staff was very extremely rude!! I was very kind and asked if I could place my order. She abruptly told me I had to use the kiosk of which I had been focused on the menus so I didn't even realize there was one there. I kindly apologized and began to place my order. Because I had never eaten at that chain, I asked what the black and white shake was. She abruptly said "fudge & vanilla". I asked for clarification and all she did was repeat "fudge & vanilla". I just went back to complete my order and went to pay. I asked if I could pay with cash as that is what I do, because being from Canada, sometimes my Apple Pay occasionally doesn't work. She said no she was closing in 25 min. And she was counting her cash, so I had to pay with a card. 25 min? Really? If you are open, you are open! Since my debit wouldn't eork, I had no choice but to leave my order. My husband went in and tried to talk to her and he got the same response. This is not a direct problem of the service center.. however because when traveling we make 1 stop count, I would highly suggest someone in management speak to that restaurant and remedy this. Dirty toilets. Because women do that. There is a service attendant working as hard as she can to keep up and she just can't keep up. Because apparently the plethora of people who visit here are PIGS. I couldn't find a spot to park because, again, selfish people parking wherever they want to, regardless of the lines, having their door open, so you can't park next to them. The grassy area for walking your dog? Has chicken bones haplessly discarded (dangerous to dogs!) even though there is a freaking TRASH CAN right there !!!! I barely wrestled a dog bone out of my dog's mouth. Avoid this place. Holy cow. Awful!!! Barely serviceable. And it is not the fault of the people who work here. They probably need triple the staff to keep up with the pigs who visit here. read more

Walt Whitman Service Plaza isn't the best place to stop at. I usually stop at this one when traveling down south because it's conveniently located right off of the freeway. Unfortunately, that's as good as it gets. The women's restroom is usually packed with lines going into neighboring stores, not to mention that it's a bit dirty. I stopped by yesterday on a quick road trip to use the bathroom and get some snacks and drinks. The restroom line wasn't long but it wasn't the cleanest bathroom. The shop had little to no selection with drinks and snacks...it was like the beginning of the pandemic all over again. It was very minimal and felt almost forced to get whatever was stocked. If you can, wait for the next service plaza. read more

They need to clean the bathrooms, make the faucets work (many didn't), make soap dispensers not dispense when trying to use the faucets. Floors and countertops were dirty. Spaces/walkways were too tight & tables/chairs were so tight they were touching each other (is this to fire code?). Even though it was not busy, people were in each others' way & this is a recently renovated site. There were no lines, but the Starbucks and shake shack were very slow--13 minutes to get 2 tiny burgers (& @$7.50 each, appalling!). This is not fast food & was a poor experience. Don't stop there. Would you believe this was my first time at a rest stop that had a food court? They had all of my favorites: Roy Rogers, Auntie Anne's, Cinnabon, and Starbucks. It was still early and I had already eaten breakfast so didn't purchase any food. I did get a fountain soda for my husband. I think it wasn't part of any of the shops. It was in the center of the food court. A medium fountain soda cost almost $2.50. It was probably pricier than had I gone to one of the shops. I did stop by the restrooms which were a bit outdated and one stall was nasty. A decent service area with a good selection of shops to pick up a quick snack without having to go out of your way to get off an exit when you are traveling. read more

Visit Date: December 8, 2018 Hubby and I took a trip to Delaware to visit our cousin. We stopped at this service area for dinner and for a bathroom break. We ate Roy Rogers, next time we eat Roy Roger's I'm opting for the roast beef on top of a salad because I forgot their burgers are similar to dog food. We also went to the starbucks which was good, lots of souvenir choices and options. The bathrooms were pretty good too. Not a bad rest stop, some good options, relatively clean restrooms. read more

This is a great rest stop with plenty to offer. Stopped here heading back home from a visit to NYC. We got gas and headed into the little food court area. There was a Starbucks, a Roy Rogers, Nathan's Hot Dogs, Carvel Ice Cream and an Auntie Anne's pretzels. They also had a little convenient store with bottled drinks, candy and snack type foods. They had little toys and trinkets and magazines for sale too. We used the restroom here and it was clean. We bought a few snacks and my husband got a Starbucks coffee and we were on our way. Nice place to stretch our legs, fuel up and get back on the road. Would definitely stop here again! read more

One of the official sanctioned service areas / rest stops on the New Jersey Turnpike, it's decent for what it provides: Rest rooms, travel information, vending machines, telephones, fast food joints, gas station, and a gift shop / convenience store. It's also situated close by to Philadelphia and Cherry Hill if continuing southbound until the NJ-DE state line and parts beyond, as well as the start of the Atlantic City Expressway to Atlantic City only a few miles away. If you're arriving northbound, you'll have to take an exit, then turn southbound. This is the 2nd to last service area in NJ (southbound) at the 30 mile mark, and the next/last one is Clara Barton at the 5 mile mark, close by to the Delaware Memorial Bridge, so plan accordingly. The rest rooms are akin to any ordinary gas station's bathrooms - decent or awful. The men's bathroom stalls were sticky, and most of the toilets didn't flush automatically / at all on my visit. To greet you while entering, there's a map of New Jersey and the surrounding Mid-Atlantic in the foyer, as well as mileposts for other cities along the way in the country, and potential hotels/motels in the next exit, or nearby Delaware/Maryland. You can ask ahead for questions about the NJT to a worker if you'd wish. Plenty of vending machines are outside, such as M&M candies, Dots ice cream, Coca-Cola, and inside, there's a New Jersey Lottery machine inside, only accepts exact change (bills), and offline between 12-5AM for your gambling needs on the go. Fast food, there's Starbucks coffee, Caravel (ice cream), Roy Rogers (sandwiches), Nathan's (Hot Dogs), and Cinnabon (pastries). Vegetarians/vegans don't have much, aside from a salad at RR. There's also the gift shop/convenience store for some snacks and essentials, moderately priced, and some state memorabilia on the way. The gas station (Sunoco) also does its job decently, but be advised those who aren't native from NJ, do not pump your own gas! It's a near 500$ fine if you do, and the attendants wouldn't approve, so just wait patiently, even if the line looks hectic. read more

Another one for Tim. Clean bathrooms and a food court make this an acceptable rest stop. The negative of this rest area was their convenience store. All I wanted was this $5.00 bottle of water. The line for the store was very long with 4 folks manning the cash registers. Problem was 1 cashier only took cc, 1 cashier was so spacey she allowed folks not in the long line to walk right up and pay for items, inspite of the wrapped around long line of patiently waiting customers. The other 2 cashiers were well past retirement years, they did their best but their best was slow. read more

This is a decent service plaza on the southbound New Jersey Turnpike. The parking lot is very spacious, it was clean and free of debris when we visited on our way back to Virginia from Maine. There is a large food court inside with plenty of seating if your wish to dine in. On our visit around 6PM on a Friday the area was kind of messy with some dirty tables. The area was mostly empty with only a few tables occupied with diners. We got some chicken, curly fries and a burger from Roy Rogers then some coffee to go from Starbucks. The chicken wasn't too good, I'm sure it had been sitting under the heat lamps for a good while. The burger was okay but certainly nothing special though I did appreciate the Roy's Fixin's Bar which allowed me to put exactly what I wanted (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayo, ketchup) on my burger. Service at Roy's was pretty lackluster with the employees seeming mostly disinterested in what they were doing. The gentleman that rang us up was fine with us but I caught him rolling his eyes at the customer ahead of us when the thoughtless patron took her food but left her tray on the counter. Coffee from Starbuck's was good though the service was not great. I stood for a full minute or so before I was acknowledged and had my order taken. I was kind of disappointed when I opened my cup to add sweetener and creamer and discovered my cup was only about 2/3rds full. In addition to Roy Rogers and Starbucks there is a Nathan's Famous, Auntie Anne's, Carvel Ice Cream and Cinnabon. There is also a small convenience store/ gift chop where you can pick up a New Jersey souvenir, snacks, beverages, food to go and other basic items you would expect to find in a convenience store. There are vending machines outside and a state lottery vending machine inside. Restrooms were clean and properly stocked on our visit and the number of Sunoco gas pumps outside was adequate for the traffic. Access into and out of the service plaza is easy. read more

Otherwise its a pretty standard NJ rest stop, with a slightly wonky traffic pattern getting you to and from the pumps. Bathrooms weren't exceptionally clean or dirty, but they get the job done. Mostly though, I'll skip this one in the future so that my SO can actually find something to eat. read more

My Starbucks latte tasted like the espresso machine hasn't been cleaned or calibrated in forever. The barista couldn't understand that I wanted soy milk...she couldn't even spell "Jason" on my fiance's cup...so, when they were calling for "Jacsin," we didn't know it was his drink! Nathan's wasn't much better. The fries had been under the heat lamp a long time and were dry yet somehow still almost undercooked in the center. The cheese sauce didn't taste right and the hot dog was like rubber. The cashier here was intellectually challenged as well, not understanding that I would accept Coke even though I'd asked for Pepsi. Are all the employees at this place rejects of other fast food establishments in the area? It felt like we were in the twilight zone or Idiocracy...and I'm not usually one who hates on service industry people since I was a waitress for several years in college. Why oh why can't the NJ Turnpike Authority be a little more creative and have different food options at the rest stops? Why can't they figure out a better parking lot/service area traffic pattern? Not gonna lie. I come to Nathan's - any Nathan's - only for their french fries. They make them crinkle style. Fat. Greasy. Thick. Soft. NO ONE ELSE MAKES FRENCH FRIES LIKE THIS. Apparently they have some secret method, something about frying them twice, blah blah blah, who cares GIMME GIMME GIMME. Since I live out west and can't enjoy these except as occasional treats, I have not so blatantly pointed out to my sister who lives in Cherry Hill that Nathan's fries are also offered in her Wegman's frozen aisle. This place is dirty and only Roy Rogers and Starbucks are open for food service. There's also some nondescript C store in there but this place is awful. The food is overpriced and the limited time I was in there , I wasn't the only one receiving the wrong food item other than what I ordered. But it is grody and nasty. Whomever operates this place should be ashamed of themselves. Beyond that, less than 10% of patrons wearing protective masks including food workers! No signs on the doors encouraging or mandating masks. It's awful and a health hazard. Captive travelers is there only reason for survival. read more
