I've been stopping at this restaurant area for over 20 years. It really is a gem! The bathrooms have always been clean, there is a beautiful courtyard, picnic tables, local reading material to get an idea on what is around to plan your trip better. There is various vending machines as well. There is so much parking available as well. It's easy to get to. Just a quick on and off the highway, which is nice. read more

24-7 bathrooms, plenty of parking, and a nice park with a fountain called Delaware Memorial Gardens. Smyrna is a nice area out of the way. I don't like that the limit is 6 hours but I get it. read more

Large rest area off of Rte 1. If you are going southbound, signage is poor so keep going straight through the traffic light and you will find it on your left. There is a direct on ramp to the highway southbound from the rest stop. This is also home to Del DOT offices so the amenities are a bit spiffier. Hubby and I stopped here to use the bathrooms and walk around a bit after driving a while. It was easy to find off the interstate. They had plenty of parking spots. Their bathrooms were clean. It makes sense now that they have a 6 hour limit; they have picnic areas to eat, a good size playground and equipment for the littles, and a dog area. We didn't realize how big the rest area is. The only thing that there is off was that when leaving the rest area, it took us back south when we were trying to stay north. read more

If you've jumped off of Rt 1 heading south, let me give you a quick tip. Stay on Route 13. You'll save yourself a few dollars in tolls and wont spend too much extra time driving. Most days the difference between 13 and 1 is 30 minutes, just because of traffic lights and such. What you'll gain is the ability to stop into local businesses and see the heart of this small state. You'll also get the chance to stop at one of the largest and most confusing rest areas I've ever visited. Why is it confusing? Because this is the type of rest area that you might expect to see on a much larger highway, and one far away from the lovely town it borders. It is obviously a holdover from the days that Smyrna was the halfway point to the beaches, when vacationers stuck in the middle of an endless country highway might really need to get out and stretch their legs. Now it serves as half rest stop, half town park area, as it is visited only by people who realize it exists, tucked just off of the busy highway that was built to bypass the many small towns. Even though it is not visited nearly as often as I imagine it was when it was built, it is still meticulously maintained. Plenty of space to get out of the car, walk out the road weary muscles, take care of any bodily needs, and prepare yourself for the next part of your trip. The rest stop sits on the northbound side of 13, but is very easy to access from the southbound lanes. I do wish that there was a food stand or convenience store attached, but there's a full shopping center and a Royal Farms just a mile or so south, so I understand why they didn't go through the expense of adding those to this rest stop. It simply gives you an opportunity to spend some time and money in the local area, and isn't that a good thing? Much better than spending it on unneeded tolls. read more

This rest area has been here for quite some time. I remember coming here late night as a rowdy late teen early 20 something with friends. Growing up in a small town forces you to be creative with what you do in your off time but I want to make clear that I am not at all encouraging loitering. This rest area offers quite a bit for weary travelers. It is set back into the woods and can be easily overlooked. Nestled on rt 13 about a mile off of the rt 1 exit and across the street from an RV dealership. Clean, well landscaped, equipped with clean bathrooms a few vending machines, outdoor pavilions, grills and a small play area for the kiddos. You are allowed to park for up to 6 hours so this is great for those who need to take a power nap before getting back on the road. read more

My excitement grew as a young child in the early 80's traveling with my family to the shore and seeing the Smyrna water tower, always stopping at this rest stop. In my young mind it signified that we were halfway there. My dad would always reward our good behavior in the car with a snack bought here from one of the vending machines. Fast forward 30+ years and that excitement is still there. It means we're either halfway home or halfway there and the rest stop is a welcoming sight for my weary bladder. Besides it's convenient location on route 13, it's also one of the cleanest, well appointed rest stops I've ever been to. There's plenty of green space for the kids to release some energy, as well as an updated playground. Moms and dads will appreciate the picnic tables for eating lunch, the dog area, clean and well stocked rest rooms, and vending machines for snacks and drinks. It's well lit and always feels safe. You can stay parked for 6 hours so if you're tired and need a nap this is the place to do it. I'm glad that even after all these years it's only gotten better with age. read more

The cleaning help was very rude to me because I accidentally did not see the Do Not Enter sign. Perhaps she should move it in front of the door instead of off to the side. Otherwise, you have a very nice rest stop as we have stopped many times. read more

I've been here many times on the way to relatives down lower Delaware and northern Maryland. It's probably one of the prettiest rest stops I've ever seen and I've traveled all over the East Coast. It's a newer rest area but it must've been constructed on wooded property because all the trees are Mature and beautiful. The inside is very well-maintained including the restrooms. Another plus is the more than ample loading in the parking lot. read more

A true "rest" area. Quiet, recessed from the highway . Many trees, flowers, a fountain, numerous picnic tables included covered picnic areas and barbeque grills, and a playground! relatively clean restrooms. a beautifully landscaped Delaware Traffic Fatality Memorial Garden, which is a unique concept I believe. a tourist information center and guft shop open from 8 am - 5 pm. a dog walk. loads of parking. a great place to stop and actually get some good sleep if you are tired and don't want to shell out for a hotel . NJ Turnpike take note, DE state route 1 has you so far outdone in the "rest area" concept. (there is a Gas station across the street if you need gas or snacks, the rest area itself has vending machines.). This place qualifies as a park not just a rest area.
