'Cilia, you're breaking my heart You're shaking my confidence daily Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees I'm begging you please to come home (Simon and Garfunkel) The New Jersey Turnpike has long had service areas named for famous New Jerseyans like Joyce Kilmer and Vince Lombardi. But not so on the Garden State Parkway, whose rest stops were boringly named for towns or geographic regions such as Montvale, Brookdale North, Brookdale South, Vauxhall, Cheesequake, Monmouth, Forked River, Atlantic, and Ocean View. But on July 28, 2021, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that the larger Garden State Parkway service areas would be re-named for members of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Hello Jon Bon Jovi, Celia Cruz, Whitney Houston, Bruce Willis, Judy Blume, Larry Doby, Connie Chung, Frank Sinatra, Toni Morrison and James Gandolfini. They all now have GSP service areas renamed for them. So that's the backstory on how the Forked River rest stop is now known as the Celia Cruz Service Area. It's a nice clean rest stop with a Dunk'n, Burger King, Nathans, and Z Market Convenience store. So, who was Celia Cruz? I sure didn't know. Well, she was born in Havana and became known as the "Queen of Salsa" for her multi-decade music and film career. Her specialty was Latin and soul music from the 1950s through the 1970s. She recorded 80 albums! Want some more achievements? Of course you do, well how about 23 gold records, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a 2011 U.S. postage stamp in her honor. Viva New Jersey!!

    Jon Bon Jovi Service Area

Most people don't get excited about a rest stop, but the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area is actually…read moreworth pulling into. Sure, it has the things you'd expect from a service area on the Garden State Parkway--gas, clean restrooms, convenience items, and a food court with several dining options--but it's also a surprisingly fun place to stretch your legs for a few minutes. The Bon Jovi theme is everywhere. Music videos play throughout the building, memorabilia and displays line the walls, and the whole place feels more like a tribute to one of New Jersey's most famous musicians than a typical highway stop. Don't be surprised if you see people taking photos of the displays while they're there. On a recent stop, I found it clean enough and easy to navigate despite the steady stream of travelers coming through. Standard rest area prices...ouch. Whether you're grabbing a coffee, picking up a quick meal, or just taking a break from the road, it's a pleasant place to stop. It's still a service area at the end of the day, but it's one with a little personality. If you're driving the Parkway and need a break, this is one of the more interesting places to make it. Oh...did I mention they have a Popeye's?!

This is the last rest stop on the GSP before you get on the Turnpike. It's been here for a while…read morebut they renamed it and renovated it as well. It's the same service stop for both directions as well, either north or south. The gas station is separate from the rest stop but they do have a store there as well. Convenience store with drinks and snacks. The rest stop building has plenty of parking and some vending machines outside. Shake Shack, Auntie Annie's, Starbucks and a convenience store are here as well. They had a few more stores besides the ones I just named as well. Seating is all in the middle and plenty of it but it also depends on how busy it is. Restrooms were clean and staffed as well to keep it clean. Plenty of JBJ memorabilia here which is very cool as well.
