A terrific winery for a Pinot noir fan that enjoys a small, intimate setting that emanates significant character. Located in Sonoma Square, the Cellar has 2 tasting rooms and a bar. The host Zeke is incredibly knowledgeable about the different Pinot Noirs that Roessler makes. He explained in poetic detail the aromas and spices each of the 7 bottles of wines we sampled possess and the emotions that each emanates. My favorite was the 2007 Alders Springs Mendicito County Pinot Noir. The taste was a composite of black cherry, plum, and a tad of oak. This place is a must for Pinot Noir fans. This winery is a great stop on your tour of the Sonoma plaza. We came here on the strength of several locals' recommendations. Their wines are strong -- they have a number of deep reds that are all solid, but the stand-out wine for my wife and I was their chardonnay. OH I AM IN PINOT HEAVEN!! I have tasted hundreds of Pinot Noirs over the years, and found WALT to be among some of the best. The tasting was hosted by Chris, and he was quite busy, but he still found time to chat about the area, the vineyards from Anderson Valley and Santa Rita Hills, two standout Pinot's on their tasting menu. I would highly recommend a reservation to taste, and see if you can get in the front room, as it is so lovely. If I did not live on a budget this would be my weekly wine to open. We came here with 2-for-1 coupons that were given to us at Envolve Winery. We had the nicest server who was so excited to go to a baseball game that night. We are not wine connoisseurs by any means, so the side-by-side comparisons really helped us to enjoy the tasting and notice the differences in flavor. My husband and I just got back from here last night and we are so glad we stopped in at Roessler. I did not think I liked Pinot Noir, until coming here. Turns out I like most Pinots as long as they are good quality. I was going to give this place 4 stars, but then realized I could not come up with one single thing about this place I would change and that it actually was what wine tasting should be. They have great wine (again, all Pinots + 2 Chardonnays), the tasting room staff (who I wish I remembered their names) were actually fun to hang out with, they played good music and I learned a little more about wine. Wow! Worst customer service ever! Been a member for 3 years at Hall and Walt. Our server David was throwing f bomb and s bombs to us and told us to leave because we complained we have been waiting for 30 min and did not get a single pour. We will be taking our business elsewhere! Their wines aren't that great to be treated so poorly and to be cursed at by cranky old man server named David. Very mediocre. We were recommended by Sojourn Cellars and were excited based on our experience at their tasting room. We had to pay for a $30 tasting for 6 wines. The outdoor area was very casual and we like the ambiance a lot. The service was great and friendly. The wine tasted alright but we had been drinking all day. I bought a bottle of Pinot and drank it the next night. My boyfriend and I both had a hard time getting through the bottle. It just wasn't that great. For $75 I could buy so many other bottles that are cheaper and better quality wine. I think this is the most expensive bottle purchased all day and the worst. I recommend passing this on your list of things to do in Sonoma. read more

Visited Walt in August and ordered 2 bottles on the site. Total charges amounted to about $200. After 4 months with no correspondence, we dug up the order number and called the winery back to understand what had gone on. No other winery that we visited while in Sonoma (there were 4 total) missed their ship date. Response from Walt is pending however the sub-standard customer service on orders will make me pass this average winery next time we are in town. With each tasting, we compared 2 different regions from the same varietals to really highlight the differences. We traveled over the hills from Petaluma and enjoyed a really lovely afternoon at Walt Wines today. Knowledgeable server with the right timing, relaxed yet professional atmosphere without the pretentious attitude you sometimes run into. Headline: Nice wines, but not impressed with service. I am a huge pinot fan and have memberships at some prestige pinots. I came here on a recommendation from a friend and after an appointment at Three Sticks, which was a phenomenal experience. I had made a reservation, which was recommended but found that I could just as easily walked in without one. We were seated for our tasting with no discussion about the history of the winery or its philosophy. Very generous pours and with wines outside the tasting, which I will give credit for, and the setting in the backyard was very nice as well. Decided to buy some wine to take back to hubby, and was disappointed to see that there was no waiver for tasting upon purchase. Seemed very distasteful, especially after the world class treatment we received at Three Sticks and what seems to be standard at prestigious brands. At any rate, I'll end with where I began which is that they have nice wines but service was a step below what I've seen. read more

The service was outstanding. Our guy Chris was attentive and very knowledgeable. I confessed my love for Pinot from Santa Lucia and he surprised me with a tasting of their Pinot from that area that wasn't on the tasting menu. How sweet, right? Knew I was joining the club after the 1st of 3 rounds of tasting. Blends and single varieties all tasty, including the Chardonnays which were not too oaky. Lou was super -- very easy, down to earth, salt of the earth kinda guy who didn't put the pressure on (or stand over us like other places) but was present, and provided good info and history on the wines and area. Top notch wines and right off the downtown Sonoma square! The Chardonnay was very well balanced and smooth without being overly buttery or oak-y. But the Pinots were the real hit. Though you do get what you pay for....the prices reflect the quality (both high). The tasting experience was great...we sat out in the lovely backyard and had wonderful conversation with the guy serving us (forgot his name but he has a big beard and glasses). He was interesting and very warm and friendly. We were tempted to join the club but just had to draw the line (tend to go overboard on wine clubs when you live fairly close).
